Carter's Country has been around for what seems forever. It used to be a relaxed atmosphere with all the usual people you would see on there on the weekends. However ever since the anti gun push, you now see EVERYONE there, many people that just bought a gun and have no idea how to safely & properly operate it... *sigh* That has kind of forced CC to really crack down on the rules, and instead of just guns getting little bands, they also put them on people, and lastly they've fenced in the shooting area so you just can't walk off the line like you used to... Carters has also raised there prices in the past year or so, considering nothing has improved around there I don't see why. Some things I don't like is you pay by the person or gun (whichever is greater), which is ridiculous, all indoor ranges you can bring as many as you want, you just pay for the lane & time. I also don't like how you *have* to buy their targets, and you can NOT use any stickers or tape to cover holes! That also rubs me the wrong way... You don't have to be so stingy as to not allow people to put their own stickers on targets. Usually once my target is shot up and I'm still waiting for cease fire, I'll just shoot the clothes pins... *shrug* Typically I'll only go here to shoot skeet, at least that area hasn't changed much and the guys are a lot more layed back over there. Other than that I'll only shoot pistol or rifles when I'm wanting to shoot steel/aluminum casings as pretty much every indoor range will not allow it. Kids are allowed, there is no age restriction. Basically they are more concerned the kids know proper safety and operation rather than saying they must be a certain age. The place has its pro's & con's... PRO: - Can shoot steel & aluminum casings. - No time limit shooting - Usually has ammo in stock at not too crazy of mark-ups. - Shooting line is covered well and typically gets a good breeze - Skeet / trap fields have trees and decent shade CON: - Pay per person/gun (whichever is greater) - Only use their targets and no stickers allowed - Max 100 yd on rifle range - Some days the wire holding up the targets is in REALLY poor condition. - Small parking lot - Each skeet field throws different, when did they calibrate their machines last? read more

I have been going to Carters Country for the past 40 years and always find their products and Staff to be top notch! In-fact, last week I call looking for 2 boxes of Federal Premium Ammo in .308 win 185 grain with the Juggernaut open tip match load. The warehouse manager (Bart) was able to locate 2 boxes and set them aside for me to pick up on Monday. Sure enough when I when in on Monday there was the bag with my 2 boxes of ammo, just as Bart said he would do. Now that's service Folks!!! Went to Carter's Country in Spring, TX on Friday, November 28th whilst visiting family in The Woodlands. It's out near George Bush Intercontinental Airport on the east side of I-45. North Houston has a lack of decent shooting ranges so I was eager to try this place out. This place has facilities for rifle, pistol and shotgun but I only shot pistols. Before entering the gun store, there is a big sign that says 1) ensure that your guns are unloaded with the slide locked open 2) no outside paper targets allowed and 3) rifles are permitted but their cases are not. I had a new 22 win mag bullpup rifle I was shooting so I had to leave the case in the truck. Upon checking in, they will examine your firearms and put a little tag on them; which I didn't care for. You pay per firearm or per person, whichever is greater. In our case, it was just my sister and I with 4 pistols and one rifle so the bill came to $70. Each firearm includes one paper target but if you wish to use Shoot'n'C targets they cost extra. There is one incredibly long firing line for both pistol and rifle. There was brass everywhere which made it difficult to walk and no one was sweeping it up. The firing line is rather narrow so it was a bit difficult to navigate down to the 7 yard target area. Cease fires are called every 20 minutes and you just find a free stall you want to shoot at. There are Range Officers walking around but they didn't seem to care much about flagrant safety violations such as muzzle sweeps or people fiddling with their firearms during a cease fire. Targets are fixed to a chicken wire fence with clothespins. In some places, the chicken wire had been shot out so you just try to find a spot that will work. I will not be going back to Carter's Country if I can help it. I always thought the gun ranges in Dallas were atrocious but in my experience the ones in the North Houston area are even worse. Elm Fork in Dallas is awfully nice compared to what I've seen but Extreme Tactics in Waxahachie is still the best! read more

I really enjoy going to Carter's Country. They have a beautiful store, friendly staff and offer more services than most shooting ranges. I can shoot skeet, rifle or pistol all on one place. I wish they didn't charge "per gun" on the pistol range. I usually like to practice with several pistols, but this gets cost prohibitive with their current pricing structure. I've been to other ranges that just charged by the hour or "per shooter" and this makes it more convenient for me to practice. read more

Unlike other gun ranges, carters charge you per gun, which is the only reason I don't mind going to Carter's to often. Places like Sportsmens charges you for the lane and you could bring as many guns as you want, unfortunately you can't bring A.R. 15 is there which is the only reason I go to Carter's. read more

Carter's Country reminds me of theme park. A theme park where most of the visitors are either sharpening their skills for an upcoming hunt or just good ol' boys looking to shoot some stuff. The main building houses guns, ammo, and accessories for purchase as well as counters to pay your entrance (which I thought was relatively low) into the range of your choice. It also houses a range of animal heads from the typical deer to the more exotic wild cat or gazelle. You've got several different areas in which to shoot based on the type of gun (shot gun, rifle, hand gun, etc) and when I went, each one was packed full. This was my first experience at a gun range and also the first time I've ever shot a gun. I went with my dad for a little father/daughter bonding and actually had a great time. We were shooting a rifle and had a target and though I looked extremely out of place (no camo or boots of any kind), I actually did pretty well for a newbie. The thing I really liked was that they stop every 20 minutes so you can add/replace a target. So even if you got to the range right at the start of a new round you wouldn't have to wait long to put up a target. Before we left we watched some people with shot guns shooting clay pigeons. That looked like a lot of fun so I will have to try it next time. Since my parents only live about half an hour away from Carter's, I imagine there will definitely be a next time. read more

This outfit has zero concern for the health of its employees and customers. When I called and asked what covid safety measures they've implemented, the response was a terse, "Nothing at all." I came here a few days ago around 1:30 P.M. I usually shoot at private ranges because theres usually less people and it's more comfortable. But coming here was a pretty cool. Parking wasn't bad on that day but the parking spaces look to crowded. On that day I brought my pistol and my AR-15.The pistol range and the AR range were right next to each other so switching ranges was very convenient . This place has a medium size range but lots of lanes so on a good day i can see it could see it to be very crowded. But luckily in my case there was only a handful of people on that Sunday afternoon. I would say that the prices are a little high but the plus side about is that it's all day. I spent easily a good 4 and a half hours at this place. As soon as i walked in i was little lost since it was my first time there but a young lady at the front end was very kind and helped me set up.She quickly checked out my fire arms,gave me my targets, and i was on the range in no time. Since it was my 1st time there they quickly gave me a safety tutorial of their range and the young gentlemen was respectable and easy to talk to. When i was shooting my AR i had an issue with my optic and i didn't have my Allen wrench in my bag and one of the employees saw that and kindly went to get on for me and S/O to him. Overall me and my buddies had a great time and we're definitely coming back. read more

Wow this is the best place for shooting in Houston. Forget about American shooting Center, they are rude, dirty and expensive. The atmosphere at Carter's is awesome. Carter's Country - Gun/Rifle Ranges Near Me - Spring, Texas

Could not properly laser bore site my Remington 700. It is not a complicated process yet they somehow botched it. I had to go to 25 yards just to get on paper because when i went to 100 yards and then 50 yards i couldnt even hit paper. At 25 yards it was way to the left and almost at the bottom of the page. I have done the procedure many times myself while still on active duty and have never seen such a horrible bore sight preformed. Range only goes to 100 yards so its not really worth bringing anything larger than a .22 or .223 maybe for plinking. Would be good if you just want to zero your rifle for hunting season but in no way shape or form is it "long range" shooting. All in all ok if you want to zero a hunting rig but never let them touch your rifle inless you want the job done by someone who is incompetent. read more

This was my first time purchasing a firearm and while I've shot at the range a couple of times, I do not know much about guns. I was looking for an ideal concealed handgun, and I had one in mind..however it was out of stock. Dan was sure to show me other comparable alternatives. His customer service was superb. He was extremely patient. I had a ton of questions! He didn't mind expounding on all of them! He showed me several guns that were similar to the one I wanted. He made sure I knew the differences between them all and what to expect from them. He gave me all of the information I needed to know and didn't know I needed. One thing I knew for sure was Dan cared about his customers and I truly appreciated that. He even helped me select ammo, and educated me on the different types of ammo there were and what they do to different types of targets. I went with the Smith and Wesson Shield EZ 9mm because it felt the most comfortable in my hand and was a safe option for me. I see several ratings with comments about rude employees, but that wasn't my experience in any way whatsoever. I made my first trip out to Carter's yesterday, planning to make a small purchase and spend some time on the range. A gentleman was very quick to ask if I needed help and came out from behind the counter to walk me to the place in the store where the item I wanted is stocked. Then I went to pay for it, as well as my range fees. The lady who checked me out was polite and friendly and very clear with directions on what to do next. The range officer who went over the rules with me was also friendly and welcoming and checked with me once or twice to make sure I was in good shape. This is a great store and range. Prices are in line or a little less than LGS prices usually are, range fees are exceptional, people are nice and friendly. I can't wait to go back. read more

I shoot here a couple of times a month with my M1A, FAL and ARs as well pistols and have always enjoyed the experience. The range is run in a very safe and professional manner and they provide spotting scopes on the 50 and 100 yd ranges. Sandbags are available as well plywood planks to keep hot brass from ejecting into the lane next to you. I typically shoot between 100-150 rounds per session and use as many as 5 targets. You pay by the gun an get one target so even after paying for the additional targets, I'm putting rounds down range for less than $20 for unlimited time. I only gave it four stars because some of the staff could be more helpful. The woman who checks you in to shoot and the range personnel are awesome, but some of the sales guys behind the counter don't seem to be interested in doing much. I've asked on two separate occasions about ordering firearms they don't have in stock and they were less than helpful. I get the feeling that if you're not looking for a mass market poodle shooter or mouse gun, they're not interested in helping you. So Carter's Country is a great place to shoot but I buy my guns elsewhere. read more

I love Carter's Country! I've been going there for years. The best gun selection was at the Katy Freeway location. I went in to buy 30.06 Ammo and they were out but they had the Smith & Wesson MP15 rifle in stock so I bought a gun instead. I went to the shooting range in Spring. They had 30.06 and only allowed me to buy on box of 20 with the purchase of a range session. It was enough to sight in my new scope. read more

First of all they have really bad customer service on the inside. You cannot bring your own targets. The real kicker is there is 0 concern for safety on this range. They do not check people for eye and ear protection. Every time I go someone is not wearing safety glasses. Last time I gave the man next to me eyes and ears the R.O. was by us the entire time. I will not return to this location. I came here because I like to shop local, but you would be better served to go to Gander Mountain or something like that. Terrible customer service. Also, I only decided to write this review after I was treated the same way multiple times at this location. This time, I intended to purchase a cheap rifle scope and a box of .22 ammunition. I accomplished neither of those things because the behind the counter service was so terrible. After probably ten minutes of waiting, I get a passing acknowledgement that I would be helped in a little bit. Probably 20 minutes later and I hadn't even received a passing glance. I understand that they have to have a system and help people in the order they come in, but it is totally inefficient to make people that just need a small amount of help to wait on people that are looking at multiple firearms, have lots of questions, and have to fill out paperwork to buy a firearm. The least they could have done was ask me what I was looking for to determine if they could help me quickly or if I needed to wait my turn. For all they knew, all I needed was a box of shells. I got so frustrated that I walked out. I will not return after multiple experiences like this. It is definitely not the place to go if you are looking for a welcoming environment. read more

If you want to spend too much money on firearms, ammo, accessories and shooting with horrible service, then this is the place for you. Do your homework and look at prices of firearms in the area before you buy. I have never found a weapon cheaper here and almost always it is WAY more expensive. Now to the staff. Rude, condescending and arrogant. I watched one salesperson try to push off a very expensive pistol on a novice female and told here she could just "put the revolver in her purse without a holster" because she was not sure how to work the loading "thingy" on the semi auto. You have to use their targets at a much inflated price on the range which is very expensive. The one nice thing is the rifle range while short, has nice benches. I visit every once in awhile to see if they have improved but in the last 5 years this has not happened. Why are people still going here? The word predatory comes to mind when I think of this business. read more

The range is really pretty bad. For the pistol range, the targets are clothes-pinned to a chicken wire "fence" that the bottom is about a foot off the ground. As a result you feel like you are shooting into the ground. They require that they put this ridiculous blue tape stuff on you trigger guard and it isn't all that easy to remove it after shooting. it is the most expensive range we have shot at - 38 bucks for my wife and I for three pistols. Usual costs are 20 bucks. Then they won't let you put your own targets over theirs when the target they gave you is wasted. At extra cost, too. Then the biggest problem there is safety. They don't enforce it. They announce over the loudspeaker during a cease fire to step behind the line and several people just stayed on the line and some were even reloading. Range officer just walks by and doesn't say a thing. You are better off at American Shooting Center. They enforce safety rules. read more

Nice range but the guy working the 50-100 yard end (53 5"11' grey stubble)was a dick. Condescending and degrading is the only way I can describe his tone. It's 7pm on Thursday there are 6 people on a range for 50+ nobody within 5 seats and he wants me to get my targets centered to my bench to not take up other shooters room. I've got a BBA/MBA and I still don't understand how he wanted my targets. Maybe his night job is in the hpd jail. I don't really appreciate paying 50$ and get treated like a child. There are plenty other places to shoot. And I can shoot. read more

I am a former medic in The United States Army and I have never been treated so horribly by range staff! Ive been here a few times and its not a bad place to shoot if your by yourself and have only 1 weapon. bringing up to 5 weapons can get expensive though As for shooting a rifle here its ok if you only shoot 100 yards and want to get your stop zeroed. The reason i gave 1 star is because i put a new Nikon scope on my rifle and figured i would have them bore sight it for me to save me time. 30 minutes or so go by and a guy asks me if i need help. I tell him im waiting for my rifle thats being bore sighted. He comes back with my rifle and says that my scope ran out of elevation. I was a bit confused by this and i didnt get charged for the process (thankfully). I went out to the 50 yard line and tried to get on paper so i could see what they wete talking about. I didnt even hit paper. I looked at the scope and noticed it was turned all the way DOWN. The idiots went the wrong way when trying to adjust the scope. I had to turn it 20 moa (80 clicks) just to get it on paper. Ive made the mistake of making the adjustment the wrong way before but only a few clicks. This is just bad attention to detail and they waisted my time. Will never trust them to handle any of my firearms since they cant seem to handle the simple task of bore sighting (did it to my issued weapons once a month while in the Marines. Its a very easy task). Also all weapons have to come in out of the case with bolts open. If you show up with 8 rifles or 10 pistols like ive done before then its more than just a pain to carry them in without a case. Stay away from carters if you want to save money or if you plan on having them bore sight your weapon read more

Pretty terrible experience overall. I had called ahead to make sure they had the specific model firearm I was hunting for. After they assured me they had 4 of them, I drove 30 miles to pick it up. The sales staff was incredibly rude and then admitted they didn't have any of the model I wanted. I also heard them be rascist to a Mexican couple ahead of me in line. Hub and I came out the other day to fire our new weapons. He has a new Beowulf .50 upper for his AR-15 and I have the Walther .22. We actually have more weapons that we would like to fire, but Carter's charges by the weapon. Kind of odd to me, since it's all the same once you're on the range. Ok, whatever. The range is very large and laid out behind the store in a long row. As you face out to the range, up close and personal is to your left, reach out and touch someone over 100 yards is to the right. There is trap shooting even further to your right, past the shed where you qualify for concealed carry. At the long range rifle stations, they have spotting scopes and sandbags at each station. That's really nice. Overall, this is a nice outdoor range. It gets really busy, but for giving your shoot'n irons a workout, it'll do. The store is pretty good as well. They carry the ammo and accessories you would need to go hunting, do some trap shooting, take care of or store your guns and ammo. The place always seems a little dim to me and a little dingy, but this is a guy place and feels like a guy place. I get it. I would like to dust the dead stuffed animals, though. Seems sad and disrespectful to me to let them get so dusty. The people at the counters can come off as a little snooty, especially if you're not a gun freak or a regular. Hub and I have had to stand there and wait to even get acknowledged, let alone wait upon. That seems to be a common theme in gun places here in Houston, however. Not sure what that is, but it's the standard so you put up with it or take your money somewhere else. Prices here are ok and they have a better selection of new and used firearms than a lot of other places. I do think Academy is better on ammo. Carter's is a good place to shoot and and to find some interesting firearms. You should head out at least once to see what they're about. read more

I really like this range, and wish I could give it a better rating, but think it's too expensive. The staff has always been friendly and helpful, and the store has a nice cabin feel. The range has lots of room, and I've never had to wait for a spot there. The only downside is having to pay for every gun you bring. It's a fun outing, but have to save up before visiting! read more

OK .... I'm a serious, 300+ round per week from several firearms. My regular range (American Shooting Center) is flooded, so I went to CC to sight in the new, $1500.00 rifle/scope combination that I bought at Carters Country on Hwy 10 West. By the way, I have spent over $5000.00 in the last few years on firearms and supplies at CC on Hwy 10. I drive 35 miles to the range only to see ..... people walking around the store and parking lot with uncased weapons. This alone should have scared the heck out of me. I register to shoot my rifle at 100 yards, pay the fee, then find out that ONLY their targets are allowed. OK, I used one of theirs but I made the horrendous dangerous, foolish, dastardly error (FAR more dangerous than uncased weapons all over the place) of sticking some shootnc's on it. They wouldn't let me shoot at that target. I planned on spending the day sighting in my new Howa 22.250 that I just bought from them, but wasn't able to. You can't sight in a 600 yard rifle on a 12 inch generic target at 100 yards. This is foolish beyond belief. This range is unsafe and poorly managed to say the least. I suggest that you do not waste your time there. The sign should say "Experienced shooters are NOT welcome here" that and "there are people with uncased weapons all over the place, watch your back".
