We love shopping at Carter's pet market because we always find exactly what we need for our dog Bobo. The times we have been here the staff is extremely kind to us and very helpful. One time, though I went in the morning and I saw a new face while I was checking out and this person was not very kind to me, but I assumed they were just not having a great start to the day so I shook it off but other than that, I would definitely shop here still! Everything you need and want in a small boutique pet store. Excellent service: I was immediately greeted and asked if I needed assistance. I am transitioning my cat from kitten food to adult food. I have been researching ethical foods with high quality limited ingredients. I checked another retailer, but they do not carry the flavor I am wanting, so I figured I would try Carter's. They only have the brand I am leaning toward in dog formulas, but they will be getting cat formulas in soon. They offered to place a special order for me, which I thought was very nice considering the first retailer told me they could not. Not just service; excellent service! Selection: Carter's has those specialty items other retailers do not. Extra-long leashes, fun pet beds, indestructible dog toys, natural products, birthday cookie bones, pretty pet food dishes/bowls, a large selection of specialty foods for both cats and dogs, including refrigerated and freezer foods and so much more. Atmosphere: It's like a boutique for your pets. Very clean and stocked well. It's a small retail store, but you can tell everything they do carry is special and won't be found in grocery stores or other pet retailers. Price: They are higher priced, but you must realize you're paying for specialty items. I purchased 1 can of cat food ($1.79), 1 cat food pouch ($1.99) and a package of dog chews - 3 count ($12.99). My total was $18.15. They have a rewards program, so I encourage you to sign up and make your dollars count all that they possible can. All the items I purchased were things I have never seen at regular retailers. I am very picky about products for my pets, so I don't mind paying a higher price. It's really not even "higher" since I have not found these items anywhere else. I truly have nothing to compare these prices to, so "higher" is not a fair word in this case. They have grooming available too. My Boston doesn't need grooming and I bathe her myself, so I have not used the grooming services at Carter's. I can say all the pups getting a spa day looked very happy and the groomer was talking to them sweetly like children, so I liked that. Way to go CPM! I have been coming to Carter's since 2014. One summer, Yelp hosted an open house at its previous branch in Energy Corridor area. Now, I'm hooked on ever since. Carter's Pet Market has high-end pet products. For some reason, I don't feel the products overwhelm me like other pet food retailers. Every time I come here I feel like I'm shopping at Trader Joe's. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Anything you tried and didn't like, just bring it back. They give you a refund. Who else provides this level of customer service? No one. During my recent visits, I happened to meet the owner, Ken. He showed me the freeze dried cat food and frozen cat food by the window. He explained everything so well like no one have done it before. His recommendation was very thorough. I appreciated Carter's even more. The best part I love is their frequent buyer program for pet foods (I believe cat litter too). Every 10th bag of same size, you'll get the next one free. Just register your name, email address and phone number with the cashier. I tell ya, it's well worth it. read more

I've been coming to this store for about a month so far, And wow! I haven't seen a small business so kind.They even deliver! The staff is always so helpful from asking if I need any help, or carrying any bags for me to the counter or to the car. I have 3 kids so this kindness is SO gratefully appreciated. May I just say their manager there is phenomenal! I have never seen someone so passionate and charismatic about his job. Really great first impression, he definitely deserves a raise and I hope whoever is in charge gives that to him! I left my dog to be groomed and had to call back, asking kindly and to confirm they don't shave the head as agreed. They hanged up on me so I called back got a different person told them what happened and that was unprofessional. That man said we're sorry you feel that way and hanged up as well. I was chocked and really didn't know what to do next! Then I remembered the last couple of times we left our dog, he was shivering and now I understand how crucial is this place. I wonder, as they dared to treat customers this way, then how are they treating our dogs behind the scene? read more

Save your money and take your dog somewhere that knows premium pricing should provide something other than impolite and crappy service. We have been loyal customers of our neighborhood, Echo Lane Carters, for over 16 years with four different dogs. And up until recently, we have been very happy with all of their services. However, 4 of our last 5 grooming reservations have been unacceptably poor. The four bad reservations all involved days where we had taken time off from work and then found out that every grooming reservation was "entered incorrectly" by an unknown staffer. And despite Carter's repeated email and text appointment confirmations, they unexpectedly could not service the dogs that day. Every time we brought the dogs back on another day, the promised 2 to 3-hour grooming turned into 5,6, or even 8 hours. We wasted time with multiple pointless pickup attempts and ended up with stressed and very unhappy dogs. On the last appointment, we were also surprised to hear about a new price increase that was not disclosed when we made the reservation. The staff never took any responsibility for their unprofessional behaviors and claimed every issue over the last 18 months was our fault. The management was nowhere to be found, and no one apologized, not even once. We won't spend any more money there. read more

Formerly located in a small, inauspicious store on VossRd, the Carter family's new 6000 ft2 space still has the family-owned "we care" atmosphere with friendly, helpful staff who maintain excellent product knowledge. And all at value pricing. They also have a generous rewards program AND they deliver. What's not to like? I wouldn't go anywhere else. If I could give this place zero stars I would. They basically scalped my dog and nearly cut off her tongue!!! And what's even worse is when my daughter came to pick her up they made her stand at the back of the store for 45 minutes while they "cleaned her up!" They NEVER called or texted me to explain what happened and they basically told my daughter that everything would be fine, this was normal and she was good to go! They charged me over $100 and had the audacity to ask for a tip. Not only was the grooming a literal scalping they didn't even bother to comb, brush, or blow dry the hair that was left!! When my dog got home she was lying on the floor and I was wondering why her mouth was so wet and she was licking herself. When I moved closer she was in a pool of blood and her little body was red stained with blood that was coming from her dangling tongue! When I called them frantically to find out what happened, the person who answered the phone said the manager was not there and they didn't know what happened. Nothing documented sorry! He said the manager JORDAN HERRERA would call me in the morning and I'm still waiting for a call. Maybe this review will get his attention. At this point I just want to warn other dog owners to stay clear of this place if you love your dog! P.S. I absolutely LOVE this pet market. This is where I go purchase my dog foods, treats, toys, bones, fresh cookies, and other accessories. My fur baby is very picky with food. My fur baby is a fan of Stella & Chewys food and they carry so many different varieties. Sadly I have not done their grooming services or doggy day care because my dog is not dog friendly. My baby was a rescue and does not like other dogs. But for everything else I come here for my doggy's needs. The staff are really helpful and friendly. Also the market dog Gus is so adorable!!! I checked out Carter's for the first time yesterday just to see what their dog boarding rates are like. I had no idea that I'd be so pleasantly surprised by the large variety of quality dog food, snacks, toys and other accessories they had on hand. It definitely beats going to one of the large chain pet stores. I didn't look at every single item, but from what I saw, their prices are comparable, if not better and they have a much larger inventory of dog products. I also like the idea of supporting a local business. Everybody was really friendly too. I bumped into the owner, Ken, who promptly introduced himself and offered his help. I really hope to use their dog daycare and boarding services, as long as my pup passes the mandatory temperament test. But regardless, I'll definitely be back again for all their other stuff! read more

I never post bad reviews. I'm the first to jump on the positive reviews if an establishment goes a bit beyond normal client service. I had scheduled an appointment a few days prior to taking my pup in. It is worthy to note that I'd engaged their services in the past and was generally happy. I picked her up after 4.5 hours - she didn't look like she'd been touched. I knew she had, as it looked as if her fur (which was supposed to be short) had been caught in a meat grinder. Honestly, she looked like a Punk Rock Pup with all the uneven hair sticking up. I called immediately. It was Saturday - told her the name of my groomer when asked, was told no one was in that could help me with a refund - or partial even. I offered a photo - told it wasn't necessary. All seemed positive until I was asked if I was a "regular" and had a preferred groomer. Told her I'd been there 4-5 times, but not with a "regular groomer" - they change constantly. She told me - after asking if I was a walk-in - that because I don't have the same groomer every time, that they couldn't help me. Seriously? Seriously. She told me the rule about this and it would be difficult to get a refund of any kind. I made a rather brash statement: Isn't up to Jordan and your team to hire competent groomers? Why does this ineptitude fall on me? Nope. I was not a happy camper. I asked to speak with Jordan (who in the past has been welcoming) - he was out of town. I asked that he call me to discuss, confirmed by number. NEVER HEARD ANOTHER WORD. I don't live close enough to take her regularly, but as I care for my elderly parents a lot now, I was seeking a permanent grooming salon in the Memorial area (where I grew up) due to my need to spend more time there again. Clearly, they were hoping I would go away. I have. But you might want to rethink if you're not a "regular" yet. Caveat emptor. read more

This place got my PUP potty trained in a week!!! My partner and I just bought our beautiful maltipoo puppy and while it was 'snowing' on day 2 everything seemed to be closed - BUT Carter's was open! We were driving around and ran into this beautiful - very well organized and aesthetically adorable petstore, Carter's. We were greeted by the Owner, Ken - and he asked if we needed help. We are really particular what we feed our baby so it was important to get organic, all natural food and treats. We left with some great finds - but the treats Ken suggested were a miracle. THE BRAND IS ORIJEN. We gave Charlie a treat everytime she peed on her pad and in a week - POTTY TRAINED. She's in love with these treats!!! She LITERALLY waits by the pad for treats lol! The whole experince was amazing and although there's bigger pet stores with more selections THIS store has the best selection and the service was AMAZING. Definitely our new pet home! An absolutely horrible experience. I went into the store with my dog which was on a leash. The man, who claims to be the owner, irresponsibly let a dog run out of the grooming room and did not make a conscious effort to retrieve it. This little dog was able to make it all the way up to me before the said owner came and got it. My dog is not aggressive, however the owner was mad at me for keeping my dog away. He did not seem the least bit concerned that the dog in his care was not listening to him. I always shop this store when I am on this side of town. Never again. read more

Our two dogs. Rufus and The Dude, have boarded at Carter's whenever we are out of town--about 7 or 8 times since last September. No problems, always happy when we drop them off and pick them up. Suddenly in July we had a family emergency and I called to see if they had room for the boys that same day. "Of course! Bring them on over. We'll keep them as long as you need us to. Don't worry about them." In the weeks since then, they've had to refill prescriptions and resupply food. Almost every day they send me photos and a text message reassuring us that they're happy guys. Here almost weekly, the groomer (Sarah) is the best, patient with my baby and such an outstanding attitude. Don't mind leaving a nice tip as they deserve it. My pup has allergies and their shampoo for such is superior. Items are pricey, but as a franchise place of business goes, it still is a superior place, very informative and not like a big box chain that could care less about the needs of your pet, aka family member. Since the melamine in most dog/cat foods will kill your pet (it did mine) it is ever mindful that as a pet owner we owe our pets the best and Carter's does offer foods that won't kill your family members. I am big on reading labels. I needed a haircut for my Persian and they did not refer me to a groomer that could groom cats and that is the only downside that I've witnessed. It is helpful if they can share with you and recommend pet sitters or groomers, and that is missing from their expertise. Selections are great, customer service is helpful and attentive. When the food I bought, (same brand as I had been buying for 2 years) but had lamb and rice in it, which made my baby ill, I took the food back, got another bag of the same brand, but chicken and rice, the staff never gave me a hard time about bringing back the food, no receipt required, am on their list of customers, but it means no hassle and with a smile. Parking is less than fun, other customers in the strip center rarely let you get out of the space and back on the freeway, but it's Houston. My dog loves going here and enjoys all the goodies to smell and try. Great family owned business with employees that actually speak and understand English. read more

I do like this shop for it's "mom and pop" feel even if it is a chain (there are locations throughout California, some in Canada and Mexico, and some on the east coast). It's smaller and so I can be lazier and walk less to get the few items I need. If you are looking for an animal to adopt from one of the rescue groups, then coming here on a weekend might be a good way to start. If you are NOT looking to adopt though, then coming here on the weekend could be dangerous! LOL They do have a nice range of foods for your pals, but there are options now at Petsmart that are just as good as what is offered here and at a lower price. Do your research before you buy - don't just go by the name - and always read the ingredients. Some "better" brands have been known to change the recipe to keep the price stable so don't assume the pet food you buy here is better. They offer antlers here for chewing and I haven't seen any as big as these at the major pet stores. Bully sticks are here as well, but for some reason the ones they have smell worse than the Red Barn brand we get at the major place. This is why they also suggest buying antlers for chewing! I will say I like their pet bed options better. Even the largest bed at Petsmart is still not big enough for our great dane, but the one we found here would be (it also costs about 3x as much though). And then there are your grooming services. They have a lot of all natural treats, but like I said, even the larger chains are getting better at offering these due to demand from pet owners! read more

Independent pet store carrying excellent dog and cat supplies. They skew towards dogs with their products and services. Friendly people! Has a nice groomer and even a doggie day care. Raw food options, good quality toys, and a number of rawhide and rawhide-like chews. Even though there are a couple of reptiles up at the counter I didn't see much in the way of reptile supplies. Maybe they're phasing those products out? Competitive pricing from what I saw of the dog food and cat litter. I will be back! I would much rather go here than PetSmart. read more

We have finally switched everything over to Carter's. I do not know all of the guys' names, but I have one guy who always knows all of the answers, and is the most helpful employee - not the owner. Carter's is a little more prucey, but they carry some good food that our finicky dogs love. Anything our vets suggest, they usually carry at Carter's (high-fiber food for our chubby girl, goat's milk for our skinny guy). My parents just moved back to Houston, and they are taking their poodle to Carter's for grooming. They are the only place we could find who did grooming just for poodles. For Christmas, we took our dogs in to meet Santa snd made a card out of the photo. It was a ton of fun and they left us with a bag of goodies for our little fur babies. This is just another example of the great service we have received st Carter's and while we will continue to spend our money there or recommend them to friends and family. read more

This is the most difficult store I've delt with after moving to Houston. I tried to order a dog bed and it was on order for 6 weeks. They constantly gave me the run around. None of the "managers" were helpful and in fact, Atennis (manager) told me to take my business elsewhere. I've asked to talk to the owner Ken Carter numerous times and have not received a call back.
