We purchased a 9mo Caique parrot from the store for approximately $3,000. Less than 24 hours after bringing the bird home, we noticed several signs of illness--drooped wings, lethargy, and balance issues. These symptoms were apparent when we first brought the bird home, but we initially attributed them to the stress of adjusting to a new environment. Concerned, we immediately scheduled a vet appointment with an avian veterinarian, who has 30 years of experience working with birds. We also reached out to the store manager, Kelli, to inform her of the situation and discuss the possibility of a refund, as per the store's Purchase Agreement. However, Kelli informed us that she could not offer a refund without approval from the store owner, Ryan, and that Ryan would need to speak directly with the veterinarian. Despite Kelli being a co-owner, she claimed that Ryan had the final say. During our vet visit, the vet confirmed that the bird was gravely ill and severely underweight. While we were at the vet's office, we called Kelli. We put her on speakerphone with the vet present. The vet introduced himself and began explaining his credentials and experience. However, Kelli interrupted him, saying, "Well, I have 30 years of experience raising birds, and maybe the reason this bird is sick is because they were keeping it in their hot garage." She made this baseless accusation in reference to a video we had sent her earlier, implying that our bedroom was actually our garage. The vet, taken aback by Kelli's dismissive and accusatory attitude, refused to speak with her or Ryan any further. Throughout this entire ordeal, we were never accusatory toward the store, as we understand that birds can sometimes be sick without showing obvious symptoms until they are critically ill. Shortly after our conversation with Kelli, Ryan contacted us while we were still at the vet's office. He requested to speak with the vet, but the vet refused due to the earlier interaction with Kelli. Ryan then stated that it was "highly unusual" for a vet not to speak with him and that he wanted to speak with the vet privately, without us in the room, because he believed the vet might "say what we wanted them to say" simply because we were paying him. Despite receiving a signed letter from our vet confirming the bird's poor health, Ryan was uncooperative and focused more on avoiding a refund than on the welfare of the bird. He insisted on further diagnostics that could have endangered the bird's life or a second opinion from a vet located in the Bay Area. Ryan even acknowledged that "anyone can look at the bird and see that it is sick," yet he demanded specific test results without clarifying what he wanted exactly. None of these demands were included in the Purchase Agreement. Our vet advised us that conducting the diagnostics in the bird's current condition would likely result in its death. When we relayed this information to Ryan, his response was, "Well, if the bird dies, have them perform a necropsy." His lack of empathy was shocking, to say the least. We chose to focus on rehabilitating it enough to undergo diagnostics. Eventually, the bird was diagnosed with a respiratory infection that had likely been developing for some time, according to the vet. We paid approximately $1,300 for basic diagnostics, including blood and crop samples, but the results were inconclusive, and this still wasn't enough for Ryan. After nearly two weeks of tense back-and-forth communication, Ryan eventually agreed to reimburse us for the vet bills, but only after "consulting his channels" and us informing him that we would pursue small claims court. Additionally, Ryan made it a condition of the reimbursement that we withdraw the complaint we had filed with the Better Business Bureau. While we appreciate the eventual reimbursement for the vet bills, the entire situation was handled poorly by the store. Over a month later, our bird is still recovering. We are feeding it formula three times a day in an attempt to get it to a healthy weight. read more

Sad story with a happy ending. I bought a Guinea Pig back in 2023. Missy Elliot was her name (she was adopted out last week). Missy is an amazing piggy that gives kisses and very well tempered. I unfortunately had to move and it just wasn't possible to bring her with us to our new home. We searched for options in the Modesto area to rehome her. We thought about taking her back to PetCo but decided that wasn't the best option for her. We didn't want to leave her with someone who was inexperienced either. We found Carters Pet Mart on Google. We did our research on this place and decided to give this place a shot. We called and had explained our situation and the original employee (Nick I believe was who I spoke to. Sorry if it was someone else). But he told me that they could take her with no problem. We took Missy the following day to Carters Pet Mart and before fully surrendering her they allowed me to say my goodbyes for as long as I needed. When I was ready they allowed me to place her in the cage and afterwards I was able to explain Missy's diet and preferences in snacks and food. They wrote everything down and promised to keep me in the loop with her adoption. I left my info and they kept their word! MISSY IS OFFICIALLY ADOPTED! But while we were there. We took a moment to walk around the store and noticed they had other pets up for adoption. All pets were active and moving around. They all had names as well. So it wasn't just 4 female Guinea Pigs for sale. It seems they are VERY INVESTED in the ANIMALS WELLBEING. They have lots of different food for many different pets. The staff are very knowledgeable about their animals and their pets. I've been to the one in Manteca. I recommend highly. I recommend the one in Modesto Stockton needs a little help with that one employee. Hopefully she got her stuff together, but the other people in there are great we have that one person there with that Stockton attitude that doesn't realize the customer service is key. They need a little bit more training and I've already complained about her one time but everyone else at the other store in the San Joaquin County area have been grateful and then help helpful so I just wanted to say that sorry I'm getting there. I'm about to leave one of those reviews I hate. But I'm going to include the good, the bad, and ideas for improvement. First, the good there was a good variety of products it seemed to be fairly organized and the store was relatively clean. They have a good selection of brand name foods that are well known some of the more niche type foods that are quality and variety of accessories. I was specifically looking for shoes and supplements for my 6-month-old German Shepherd. Now the bad, the store is pretty cluttered, there aren't many employees around and weren't any on the floor. I had a couple of questions, and had to go over to the register to get them answered. I think the store could be arranged in a way that made it feel less claustrophobic, and I think at least one or two people answering questions on the floor would be a good idea. Fish keepers beware. I went to the Stockton location after having used the Modesto location before and their aquatics department was always very small. On Thursday 3/2/23, my husband and I made the drive to the Stockton store to check out their aquatics. We ended up making a purchase of a few freshwater fish, including Angelfish, and we're on our way. Angelfish are semi territorial fish and do have the ability to get along in community tanks. However after 24 hours of observation, one of the new angels was being aggressive to everything in the tank. We added more covering, plants etc and it didn't remedy. So, we realized we didn't have a receipt when we left so I called them to explain. This is where it gets great. I did not catch the name of the woman who answered the phone but I think it was Kelly, she needs to be fired immediately. She is quite frankly the rudest person I have ever dealt with in LPS. (Local Pet Stores). I explained the situation to her. She immediately cuts me off the say, that's not their fault the fish is aggressive and they don't do refunds. Yeah, cool, why not listen to me. First of all, how about an apology for the lack of getting a receipt for a store that's over 45 min drive from me. How about an apology for the current situation. Oh that's right, as she kindly put it, "not their fault". I told her she was being absolutely belligerent and ugly. How can you treat a customer hostile from the jump? Wow. "You can donate the fish back but you won't get your money". How ugly can you be? We bought our bird (sun conure) which we paid close to a thousand for. The bird lived a little over 24 hours. We called carters and asked we get a bird necropsy which we did: the bird vet Dr said the bird died of an infection. The owners then proceeded to blame us for mishandling the bird even though infection takes more than longer than 24 hours to kill. In the end we did a refund however we will not do anymore business with them in the future . I recommend not doing business with them . read more

Been a customer for 2 years and they barely told me this week they have a rewards program on the dog food. Went in yesterday and they had vulgar rap music playing on the loud speakers with profanity. Anyone who is looking to purchase mice as pets and want them to come home with a clean bill of health, have little health complications to come, not possibly pregnant or anything then do not purchase here and frankly-- don't purchase at any at any pet stores at all. This place sources their mice from a backroom where they breed indiscriminately, the pet mice out in the front that you see and are labeled as pets are the same ones killed to be fed as food for snakes and other reptiles. If that fact alone disturbs you then look into finding mice rehomed by other people or find breeders in the area who specialize in creating healthy long-living mice. This is not a diss on the store, in fact I've gotten my hamsters from here and my rats but I figured I'd let any unknowing people to be careful and mindful about where you are getting your mice from. Having frequented Carter's for years, we decided to take our rescued Mal/Dobie mix (about 3 years old) to Carters for grooming. When we pick her up (it's now been several times), she is always happy and relaxed and she smells great! Due to her breed, she has an undercoat and and a rougher overcoat that can create a lot of shedding, which they brush out and she ends up being nice and smooth-coated. She is a big dog (60+ lbs.) and strong, but they never seem to have an trouble with handling her and she is not stressed to go or to get picked up. We are pleased and the prices are very reasonable. We always get a shampoo/brush and her nails dremeled. Highly recommended. read more
