Cartesian Brewing, Philadelphia, PA. I saw the Passyunk address and thought this was going to be a much different place. They have a garage brewery vibe and are half a block from Pat's and Geno's. C&D (D&C?) Pizza is here on Wed, Fri & Sunday. I went on a Sunday, and the pizza brought in a big crowd. They have 8 taps, and each beer has a fun name. I got the Audacity. I liked it. It is their Juicy Juice beer. It was juicy. But, Juicy Juice? Outfront, inside, outback, and bar seating. Safe to assume they had a dog problem because, according to Google Maps, they used to be dog-friendly. The bartender was good. I don't think he loved the big crowd the pizza brought in. I wish I had known about Catesian Brewing sooner. I would have eaten many Pat's and Geno's Cheesesteaks here. TheCheesesteakLife.com - Your home for everything cheesesteak.

(Visited on 11/11/24.) Urban, industrial, open-air atmosphere. Good , classic beer styles. Separate pizza ordering was available from a different vendor, which was decent. Nice place to visit on a Friday in the city (about a block from Geno's and Pat's).

We love the casual, environment, cool chalkboard menu and even cooler tables that are largely repurposed doors! Very unique, especially with the mismatched chairs. I want to love their beer, but I'm not quite there yet. The Rest of Upper is very tasty, and the Amateur Cartography is also something I find myself ordering again. Audacity (a fruited sour) is my go to. Though, it did have a weird aftertaste once. They rotate stuff all the time, which is great and will absolutely keep me coming back to try their flights (which you can get any beer in). They have one small TV you can watch games on. It would be cool if they got another so it could compete with other game day bars. Counter service makes it easy and low key. They have a pizza oven now that is active only certain days so keep that in mind before you BYOF!

If Cartesian existed when I lived across the street I would be bankrupt by now! Fortunately for my bank account, it didn't, but in the present time its the perfect reason for me to revisit my old East Passyunk Cheesesteak Vegas stomping ground and savor some damn good beers! Located inside an old bike shop, Cartesian makes perfect use of space by keeping the garage door open for walk-ins on warm weather days, and filling the interior with all kinds of eclectic artwork and seating arrangements. While they don't have their own food outside of snacks, they do allow you to bring your own and they do occasionally host food trucks and vendors. The main event is the beer, and I've enjoyed many a good flight here. While they do have some good ones to offer the One God Further hazy, I do love Cartesian's commitment to offering more than just IPAs and having some harder-to-find beers on rotation like altbiers and barleywines. Favorites of mine include the Calais brown saison ale, the Pelusium which is a barleywine on the lighter side, and the smooth Sons Grown Tall British amber. But with new beers rotating on the regular, I'll be back for more!

Cartesian is a fun place to hang out with friends or in small groups. On summer days they have their garage door open! But even on cold days the place is welcoming. There are about 10-13 beers on tap and 4 types available in cans. Also seltzer, kombucha, and non alcoholic drinks available. Food is available to order from nearby places and on certain dates they have food trucks come by. Service is quick and there are board games available to use while here. Wi-Fi is also available. The beers are good and they have specials on certain days (such as pints for $6 on Sundays). Also ask for a beer flight to try different options.

The ambiance of the place is very hipster. The place looks like a remodeled garage, with the original flooring in tact and a sprawl of small tables and chairs setup along with some benches as well. The place is very clean (as a newly opened business should) and the vibe of the place reminds me of a pop-up beer garden, but from the comfort of being indoors. They open the garage doors to let in a lot of light, and makes you feel more connected to the Passyunk neighborhood. I'll update this review later once I get to try some of the food.

Visited Cartesian with a few friends who were in the city after reading about them as one of the best new breweries. It was a balmy summer day, so enjoying a few beers was right up our alley (although unfortunately, the brewery is in a garage without solid AC). We made our way to the brewery, a bit surprised at the industrial nature of the spot - it's basically in a garage without frills or really much decor, but of course with a prominently placed bar. It was a Saturday afternoon, and given the heat, there were a few other groups there, but not too many, so we easily snagged a table. We saw the BYOF nature of the brewery, so we grabbed some food from Mighty Bread Co on our way over, which was nice to be able to enjoy alongside our beers. The draft menu is extensive for being a smaller brewery, but not overwhelmingly so, and we loved that we could do smaller pours / flights to optimize our tastings. My varieties focused on the fruited sours and more fruit-forward beers, which were all really nice. My husband gravitated towards more IPAs, and he spoke highly of the hazy IPAs. They definitely hit the spot on this summer day! Cartesian is definitely very casual vibe with garage bar vibes - I can see us making our way there for Philly sports games and with visiting groups of friends who want a more low-key spot. I would appreciate more cohesion with decor and definitely AC in the summer, but overall, we enjoyed our beers and experience at Cartesian, and we'll very likely be back!

Smattering of patio tables on both Eighth Street and Carpenter. When I saw it, I said yes before even looking at the menu. We ordered drinks at the bar and took them outside. It's very chic but also casual. There were mostly pairs or trios - no families. Not th. We saw people ordering a little bit of everything. Honestly, the menu looked great! The kale Caesar salad, the piri piri buffalo chicken dip, bacon wrapped plums, etc. The drinks were the best we had on our Philly trip! The Spanish Monk which had gin, lemon juice, frothed egg white and smoked paprika. I had the GGG which they carried over from their old menu. Can't remember what was in it but she said it was similar to Bee's Knees which is one of my favorite! There's self service still water and sparkling water in the back of the restaurant. Perfectly chilled. Perfectly bubbled! Such a lovely spot!

The bar is split with the restaurant half (though I think technically combined?) and I can absolutely see this place being PACKED for an Eagles game. Very reasonable pricing for beer. The service was superb. We happened to be there when AirBNB was there to take pictures and we requested not to be part of the photos. Not only were they super nice about it, they actually gave us free drinks for the "inconvenience" of having to move bars. And the vibe overall is great, very laid back but with tons of TVs bound to have whatever game you want to watch on. If you live in the neighborhood, this could easily be a go-to spot.

I especially like it here on a Monday's when they have a 1/2 off growlers. There's indoor out and outdoor seating you can also get specialty beers to go from the case and there's so much to choose from. I generally sit at the bar inside to get myself a couple samples of the new beers on tap just to help make a decision on what I'd like to take home. The staff is helpful, very efficient and friendly. The place is very clean well lit. Parking may be at a premium on certain days. What kept me from giving this business five stars is how food is ordered. I knew that they sold hotdogs because they're right on the counter next to the draft beer but I mentioned I needed a little more sustenance. ' we have a food menu you can order food' it was with other items next to the register. I had no idea it was food from across the street and it caused two different tabs. I should've been told is an advance in the end it was fine the pizza was good as was the beer but I would have preferred a heads up. If you use a credit card there is a $10 minimum if you get eight dollars worth of beer like I did it may have been a problem because I couldn't use my card for lack of cash! The items together were $24. When closing out trying to get to my movie the restaurant took an extended period of time bringing me my card back.

Cons: Booked our reservations in advance, then our friends wanted to join in and booked theirs too later on. Unfortunately, there was no way for the staff to combine our reservations and let us all play together. You book a group of races that are played back to back. You cannot select what team you drive for, nor can you select the track, which we did not like. You have to play each race immediately and consecutively, and we wished there was an option to take it slower and scan a card or something to prompt the next race at our own pace, like an arcade. On the last race, our screens continued to play the guidelines and looped for about 8 minutes while our friends raced next to us before we asked for help. They had to reset it and we ended up having to race a course we already did previously because there was no way for them to select the last one for us. Overall this was a disappointing experience due to the lack of technical accommodations the staff could make. It was cool-looking but outside of that was not worth the money to me.

I have gone through many iterations of my relationship with being a fan of sports teams…read more Younger me's whole personality was based around Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, Angels Baseball, and USC football. I vividly remember after the Lakers game 7 Championship win against the Celtics in 2010, 14 year old me who had just wrapped up the 8th grade, had a major realization. After a night of pure exaltation and chirping all my friends who were Celtics fans, I woke up the next day and realized my life had not changed AT ALL. I had a metamorphosis of sorts, realizing that I should put all of this time, energy, and passion into myself rather than being fans of players and teams who didn't know I existed. While I remained a fan, it was never the same. I stopped wearing my Kobe jerseys everywhere I went. I began to look at grown men walking around wearing other grown mens jerseys like they were DORKS. Don't you want to do something impactful with your life to where people would want to wear your jersey? Or wear your own, at least in a metaphorical sense? Idk. In retrospect, I became a little asshole lmao. --I promise The Garage will tie in here in a second stay with me I love this place-- It wasn't until I went to Europe on a school trip towards the end of High School when my 2nd metamorphosis began. I was OBSESSED with everything about European culture, thinking how fascinating it was that people live so differently than myself, but it's just normal life to them. My American ignorance led me to believe that everyone lived like I did, had the same interests I did. Idk, it blew my mind and I just couldn't get enough. I thought it was SO cool how passionate the Europeans were about their soccer, not realizing how contradictory this was to my own beliefs about American sports fans. I even bought a Messi Jersey and allat! It wasn't until years and years later, when I really put it together. These European Football fans were essentially paralleled to American Football fans. Both getting SO invested in these games, SCREAMING at the screen between sips of beer at a local bar like that will have any effect on the outcome of the game lmao. The older I have gotten, the more I have begun to respect the passionate sports fan, no matter what sport it is. Even if, for me personally, this passion is better to be placed somewhere else, I respect and love to be around passionate people no matter where that passion is placed. Who am I to tell someone what to be passionate about? I have gone through this life meeting people who are passionate about literally nothing, just kind of numb to life and that makes me sad and just scares me. How could you be numb to life? It's such a beautiful gift tha---okay I'm getting way too existential, let me reign it in. All this to say, I watched game 1 of the NLDS here where the Phillies were playing the Braves the other night. I feel like the reputation of the Philly sports fan is the best we have in America, and they did NOT disappoint. They were going BRAAAZYYYYYY in here lmaaaoo. Every base hit felt like a homerun, every home run felt like they had just won the mf powerball. For every single out they were counting down for how many more they needed to win. "ONLY 18 MORE WE GOT THIS!" lmao. The passion was tangible and beautiful. There was a guy slanging $4 hotdogs that were delicious, 100% pure American beef (allegedly). The bartenders were LOCKED IN, getting people drinks quick and moving onto the next. This was one of the best, most efficient bartending performances I have ever seen. Almost as efficient as a Philadelphia Eagles QB sneak. Almost. You can also bring outside food which is IDEAL, as I saw some people walking in with a couple pizzas. That's a vet move, I'll be ready next time. Also, get the grape funbag for a drink if you're feeling adventurous. Well even if you're not feeling adventurous get the grape funbag. Have I ever lied to you, my dear reader? All in all, I can't imagine a better place to watch a game. I love The Garage and I love the city of Philadelphia. Passion oozes out of the streets and the people. I'll be back, and with pizza next time. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__
