I have gone through many iterations of my relationship with being a fan of sports teams. Younger me's whole personality was based around Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, Angels Baseball, and USC football. I vividly remember after the Lakers game 7 Championship win against the Celtics in 2010, 14 year old me who had just wrapped up the 8th grade, had a major realization. After a night of pure exaltation and chirping all my friends who were Celtics fans, I woke up the next day and realized my life had not changed AT ALL. I had a metamorphosis of sorts, realizing that I should put all of this time, energy, and passion into myself rather than being fans of players and teams who didn't know I existed. While I remained a fan, it was never the same. I stopped wearing my Kobe jerseys everywhere I went. I began to look at grown men walking around wearing other grown mens jerseys like they were DORKS. Don't you want to do something impactful with your life to where people would want to wear your jersey? Or wear your own, at least in a metaphorical sense? Idk. In retrospect, I became a little asshole lmao. --I promise The Garage will tie in here in a second stay with me I love this place-- It wasn't until I went to Europe on a school trip towards the end of High School when my 2nd metamorphosis began. I was OBSESSED with everything about European culture, thinking how fascinating it was that people live so differently than myself, but it's just normal life to them. My American ignorance led me to believe that everyone lived like I did, had the same interests I did. Idk, it blew my mind and I just couldn't get enough. I thought it was SO cool how passionate the Europeans were about their soccer, not realizing how contradictory this was to my own beliefs about American sports fans. I even bought a Messi Jersey and allat! It wasn't until years and years later, when I really put it together. These European Football fans were essentially paralleled to American Football fans. Both getting SO invested in these games, SCREAMING at the screen between sips of beer at a local bar like that will have any effect on the outcome of the game lmao. The older I have gotten, the more I have begun to respect the passionate sports fan, no matter what sport it is. Even if, for me personally, this passion is better to be placed somewhere else, I respect and love to be around passionate people no matter where that passion is placed. Who am I to tell someone what to be passionate about? I have gone through this life meeting people who are passionate about literally nothing, just kind of numb to life and that makes me sad and just scares me. How could you be numb to life? It's such a beautiful gift tha---okay I'm getting way too existential, let me reign it in. All this to say, I watched game 1 of the NLDS here where the Phillies were playing the Braves the other night. I feel like the reputation of the Philly sports fan is the best we have in America, and they did NOT disappoint. They were going BRAAAZYYYYYY in here lmaaaoo. Every base hit felt like a homerun, every home run felt like they had just won the mf powerball. For every single out they were counting down for how many more they needed to win. "ONLY 18 MORE WE GOT THIS!" lmao. The passion was tangible and beautiful. There was a guy slanging $4 hotdogs that were delicious, 100% pure American beef (allegedly). The bartenders were LOCKED IN, getting people drinks quick and moving onto the next. This was one of the best, most efficient bartending performances I have ever seen. Almost as efficient as a Philadelphia Eagles QB sneak. Almost. You can also bring outside food which is IDEAL, as I saw some people walking in with a couple pizzas. That's a vet move, I'll be ready next time. Also, get the grape funbag for a drink if you're feeling adventurous. Well even if you're not feeling adventurous get the grape funbag. Have I ever lied to you, my dear reader? All in all, I can't imagine a better place to watch a game. I love The Garage and I love the city of Philadelphia. The guy was hustling, moving, grooving and doing his best, but he needed someone else there. Waited 30 minutes to get a drink. Garage is one of my go-to bars in South Philly! The skee ball machines, TouchTunes, and huge beer/cider/seltzer selection makes it a great place to hang out for several hours. It's also a great place to go for watching Philly sports games (but you'll need to get there early to secure a seat or it will be standing room only, especially for Eagles games!) I love that you can bring in outside food, and that they also have the food stand inside if you don't feel like venturing too far or paying delivery fees. My friends and I came here after a house warming party. Our bartender (green hair glasses) decided she wanted to be so rude to every single last one of us. Maybe she had a bad day, fair! However, to give extreme attitude to 20+ people for ordering killer lites is insane. She gave us cans, and complained about the fact she had to open them...is that not standard? Great beer selection (wouldn't order any of the flat taps though), but the service kinda stinks. I called ahead the morning before and asked if one of their six screens could show a specific tourney game -- they said sure. Unfortunately, when I got there and requested one screen be changed three times -- one server said okay and didn't change it, a second server lied and said they had already been reserved, and a third one ignored me. Super fun bar! You're able to bring your cheesesteaks in from across the street. I had the bartender make me a special drink. They made me a pineapple upside down cake cocktail (cake vodka, grenadine, and pineapple juice. YOURE WELCOME) it was SO good, and a drink you can't even taste the alcohol in. Garage is one of those excellent South Philly bars that is always on my list, but I seldom get to as often as I should (and not just because I usually try to avoid walking by Cheesesteak Vegas). After all its pretty hard to top a canned beer heaven that hosts pop up chef nights, and a boatload of fun games to play. From PBR and Tecate, to 21st Amendment and Finch's, and everywhere in between, if you're looking for any beer that's been canned you'll find it at Garage. If you don't then you still have a couple draft beers to enjoy, but with most cans ranging from $3-5 its easier to imbibe that way. When Garage doesn't host a guest chef their food cart is pretty much just limited to decent hot dogs. But since I've seen and read about the likes of Serpico, Grubhouse, Hungry Pigeon, and more hosting pop-up nights here you can file checking out their food night calendar as a mandatory! The game room is amply stocked with skeeball, pool tables, and then some. Plus you best believe that I can give a Pinball Alert! Add in their byo cheesesteak policy if you prefer not to avoid those neon lights; and the fact that it being someone colder than most bars in the winter, and hotter than most bars in the summer (it was built in a converted garage after all.) is the only real flaw, and you have one solid bar concept. Over 200 cans of craft beer, pool table, and skee ball. I find myself here almost every week! The Bartenders are awesome too.. You learn to love them cause they know their beer, and don't take any crap. If you're a tourist, you'll stick out like a sore thumb here, so beware. But it's ok everyone is usually friendly. You are in south philly so it's a bit more raw down these parts :) Anyway, I love Garage. Fun, unique, tons of beer, and great for large groups at the long high top tables against the back walls. The staff members were very rude to us and honestly gave my friends and I the worst bar experience I've had so far. We didn't have that much money at the time and we didn't want to drink that much so we shared, but the staff there made us feel very bad about it. My sandwich was missing the crackling which was quite disappointing. Decided to try the Sloppy Joe and it was exquisite even when incomplete. I found out Garage had opened, and figured I'd head over for a drink before moving on to the rest of my evening. With it being a rainy evening, the bar was fairly camouflaged by the lit Satellite Auto Body sign above the closed garage door. The chalkboard signs for the bar revealed themselves as I got closer, and I dashed in to escape the rain. Through the door, I found a long bar to the right, with several flat screen TVs mounted high on the wall. To the left were tables, and a permanently installed food cart. In back I could see a pool table, and three skeeball machines. I sat down at the bar and ordered a Narragansett pounder. They have their beer menus in the style of shop manuals, a nice touch. Leafing through, they have an impressive selection of canned beer, though it seemed that some of the options had not yet arrived to their coolers. For the time being, the food cart menu is limited to hot dogs, ordered at the bar and picked up from the cart with a receipt. They have a small selection of whisky on a back bar made from a shop bench, and a register ingeniously built in to a snap-on tool chest. As I sat at the bar, there was a lot of activity for a brand new bar, attesting to both the high traffic location and Philly's connected bar scene. From my stool up front, I could occasionally hear the sounds of the skeeball machine in back, over the slightly too loud and indistinct music playing. I did see one group leave and come back with BYO Cheesesteaks, which is an interesting twist for the location. So far I think the space has a lot of potential, and will have to return over the next few months to see how it grows. read more

Very laid back environment with fun games (skee ball) and amazing beer. While they don't have much beer on tap, they have such a wide selection of cans that you can spend your entire night trying something new and exciting. There are a decent number of tv's so it's not a terrible spot to catch a game, but when it gets packed, it can be a bit of a challenge to get to the bar. Bartenders were all really friendly and were willing to recommend a number of different beers based on what I was looking for at the time. I'd also note that the prices are pretty cheap, so you really can try out tons of different things. This is sand for the game (located across from the machine). Yes, I ate it. I asked the bartender twice what it was, but he walked right past me. It was a little chaotic in there so I don't blame him. The security told me I am not the only one who ate the sand here. I was so pleasantly surprised with this venue! I didn't know what to expect when I heard the name. I came here hoping to watch the flyers game. Upon our arrival the bar started to get more and more crowded and we all were panicking about how we were going to see the TVs. Then one of the employees goes over to a wall and pulls down this massive projector and the game was on it! It was awesome! We could watch it right from the table. This place gets pretty full and it can be kind of difficult to get a drink. But the good news is the wait is worth it, drinks are great, and there is a HUGE selection of beers from practically anywhere you could think of. If you don't feel like watching the game there are plenty of arcade games, pool, and other cool things to keep you entertained. They also feature certain local restaurants in the kitchen during the week so it's an ever changing menu. The location is exactly what it's name is, an old garage, but with an eclectic vibe that you can't find anywhere else. It's like the old Irish pub meets the millennial taste. It was awesome. I actually found it more effective to just eyeball what was in the fridges than flip through their alcoholics' bible - which, to its credit, does group every brew by either location brewed or type of beer... I kind of forget, because I was drinking. Everything's reasonably priced, they have skee-ball and billiards, and a nice wide open space for you and your friends to catch up and have too many of your favorite beer that you can't find anywhere else. The food cart that's apparently a permanent fixture is also neat. They have rotating chefs, too. One night, I had an acquaintance cooking there. Brisket tacos and beer. Can't get much better. After smashing cheesesteaks over @ Pat's & Geno's me and the homie decided that we needed to wash it all down with some suds (beer lol). Its basically around the corner from the steak giants and quite convenient. The place seems like a bikers kind of bar with the motorcycle pics and some kind of truck inside to give a garage like feel to it. Lots of locals in this place in which I prefer as I don't want t be in a bar with a bunch of tourists lol. Very nice people in this joint and everyone was pretty much tatted up in here.
