Carvel Ice Cream has a rich history dating back to 1934. It all started on Memorial Day when Tom Carvel's ice cream truck got a flat tire in Hartsdale, New York. He decided to sell his slightly melted ice cream on the spot--and people loved it. That experience inspired him to serve soft ice cream from a fixed location. By 1936, Carvel's "no-air, super low temperature" ice cream was patented, and in 1937, he opened his first shop in Hartsdale. In 1947, Carvel became the first retail ice cream shop in America to franchise. By 1951, there were 100 shops, and they introduced their iconic Flying Saucer ice cream, inspired by the UFO craze of the era. They're also famous for the Fudgie the Whale ice cream cake, which celebrated its 40th birthday in 2017. Today, Carvel is owned by Focus Brands, and as of 2022, there are 358 franchises worldwide, 326 of them in the U.S. Their motto? "America's Freshest Ice Cream." While shopping in the area, I spotted this Carvel on Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach. What immediately caught my eye was the giant Flying Saucer on the roof, recently installed to celebrate 75 years of this iconic treat. I grew up with a Carvel just down the street in New Jersey and have so many childhood memories enjoying their ice cream with my family and indulging in Flying Saucers at school events. Today, you can still get a Flying Saucer for only 75 cents, and on Wednesdays, they offer BOGO sundaes--perfect for a sweet deal! Seeing the Flying Saucer instantly brought back all those childhood feelings, so I couldn't resist stopping for a treat. In addition to Flying Saucers, Carvel offers Fudgie the Whale, Cookie Puss, and a variety of other cakes, along with hard and soft serve ice cream, shakes, and sundaes. On this visit, I went for a small brownie sundae dasher, made with layers of soft serve vanilla, brownie, and fudge sauce--a truly decadent indulgence. There are a few tables outside where you can enjoy your treat. This Carvel location is so cute, and the staff was incredibly friendly. For me, a visit to Carvel is pure nostalgia. read more

Was craving a little something sweet after my fish lunch. He wanted donuts so we stopped down the street first. Ice cream appealed to me and this place was only two blocks away. We parked and went inside. I got a kiddie cup of mixed chocolate and vanilla. It was good, but acting portion for almost $4. There's no seating inside. There are several round concrete benches on the sidewalk next to Dixie Highway, however. Two couples were seated there enjoying shakes and sundaes. Good to know they're still here. . read more

It's hard to find stand alone Carvels anymore, so this was kind of a surprised. The place was very clean, and the staff was ready to help right off the bat. I found prices to be reasonable, but they can get you with add on charges. A small amount of benches and tables rounds out the Old Florida look outside. They carry a good variety of ice cream and soft serve flavours. Quite a few parking spaces on their lot and around so it shouldn't be an issue visiting here. read more

I've been coming to this location for 45 years (!), and it doesn't disappoint. This is where I learned to love vanilla soft serve. I had always thought vanilla was my favorite flavor because I liked the taste best, but I recently learned that the reason I kept ordering vanilla as a child was that it was the only flavor our mom would let us get because drips were easier to clean from clothes! Today, like every Father's Day, we got a Fudgie the Whale. The cake I picked up was freshly made, which was especially noticeable in how fluffy the whipped cream around the edges was. The person behind the counter couldn't have been nicer. i've been coming here for years, but today I went in and got a cone and asked for a regular cone. The lady gave it to me. paid with my other one came back out and it was the wrong cone. I had to go back in.i didn't get a chance to double check so o i came back and explained and asked for a refund she told me no she tried to give me a another cone and I said I can't pay she said that not to ever come back to the store and I told her can I just get a refund she said now thanks to you o have to make up the money I said I didn't ask for extra cone just my money back worst experience specially I never felt so low in my life . I have not been to a Carvel in years. Growing up in New Jersey, they were everywhere. I used to love to go to get their soft serve. There are no Carvels within 100 miles of Chicago, although you can find their ice cream cakes in the grocery stores (but it's different). Now that I can't have milk products, when I first saw Carvel, I was disappointed I couldn't go. On a whim, I checked their website and saw they carry Oatly Oat Milk frozen custard, so we went. (I called first to double-check.) There was a short line that moved quickly. There were three of us - two ordered cones, and I had a cup with sprinkles. Man, it was delicious! It's been a long time since I had "real" custard, but I swear it tasted like the real thing (ice cream). We enjoyed it so much we went back a second time. This time, they didn't have Oatly custard, but they did have it available in scoops. I hoped for te custard, but no matter, the cup (with sprinkles) was equally good. I'm not sure if Carvel offers franchises in the Chicago area, but it sure would be nice if one was close to my home. read more

Only Carvel around that literally charges you $1.75 extra just to put the hot fudge on the side as opposed to putting it on top of your ice cream. Who does that? The only place to sit is literally outside almost a couple inches from the main street of traffic whizzing by constantly so you can't even talk to each other. Skimpy portion sizes as well compared to other carvels. We found ourselves in this area as we usually get our Sundays at a different Carvel and are never charged extra. The owners/managers keep this place spotless and have well-trained, polite employees. It is the best run ice cream shop I have ever seen. The building is a historic landmark here is WPB and luckily the owners have preserved its classic look. The menu is varied and the ice cream is good. This place was FREEZING! I get that it's an ice cream place but wow! The AC unit was blasting the small store. If you are trying to sit down to eat your ice cream then I suggest another carvel location. It is tiny inside especially if there is a line. Only outside seating! I got the unicorn shake but it wasn't anything special to get again. It is just vanilla ice cream with dyed pink/purple "marshmallow" drizzle on the side of the cup with a sprinkle cone on top. When I came to pick up my order a staff memeber told me that they would be with me. Then I am waiting while they help people who are just walking in while I have already been waiting. Then I go to ask another staff member for help and he rudely tells me that he is checking someone out and couldn't help. After he checks the client out he then ask my name and tells me my order will not be ready for another 43 minutes!!! I ordered one scoop of ice cream! What do you mean its going to take 43minutes!! I have to admit that growing up Carvel was NOT my favorite. Boy how times have changed. I love that Carvel has simple yummy ice cream. Many ice cream shops are selling crazy flavor fusions and topping bars that range from silly to strange all in the hopes that they can WOW you. Carvel just keeps it simple and lets the ice cream flavor take the lead. Usually I get a simple cone of whatever flavor I'm in the mood for but on my last visit I had their pumpkin ice cream with chocolate syrup. mmmmmmmm .... Delish. This location gets pretty busy around 7:30pm no matter what night it is. Service is always fast so don't let the line of 20 people scare you. They have lots of tables outside but since it gets pretty packed you should be comfortable with sharing your table with a stranger or two. Hey you might even make a new friend at this cozy little ice cream parlor. I think what I love most about this location is the nostalgic look and feel of the place. Two huge vanilla ice cream cones sit on top of the store and the sign and paint colors look like they just came out of the 50's-60's.
