The Side Bar is a true diamond in the rough of what is Lawton, Oklahoma. The owner(s) is definitely not a local and why he would live here is beyond me. BUT the ambiance, decor, and cosmopolitan look is very well done and stands up with any great bar in Deep Ellum or Lower Greenville. It's only when the clientele open their mouths do you realize, "yup, I'm still in Lawton, Oklahoma." The bartenders are not just cute but actually were attentive (more so than many places in Dallas) and, considering it is Lawton, Oklahoma, know what a Manhattan is as well as an Old Fashioned. Unfortunately they served without rye but I don't hold it against them (looking at you management/owner) because I was immediately told about it. I'm looking forward to asking for a sazerac or a cosmopolitan on my next visit so hopefully they have the goods. The only issue I had with the staff (IF he is on the payroll) was some idiot who treated the music as his own personal playlist; diverse clientele be damned. Even the bartenders were annoyed at him but he straightened up once the owner was on site. Also, there is a lot of smoke/vaping but I give that a pass since, well, it is Lawton, Oklahoma. However, all the food options are non-vegetarian, so if you're vegetarian, I wouldn't recommend it for food since there aren't any vegetarian choices available. That said, the bar is absolutely awesome. The interior looks amazing, and the staff working there were very nice and sweet. A young guy helped me out and was really friendly. I ordered a fun and creative drink made with cranberry and vodka--it was served in a blood-bag-style pouch! It sounds funny, but it was actually really cool and unique. Overall, the place is highly recommended for hanging out. It has both indoor and outdoor seating, live music that was really good, and a very friendly crowd. I even saw families with kids, probably because of the food truck setup. They also have fire pits outside, which makes sitting outdoors even better, especially in cooler weather. And I was told as such by both bartenders working, one of which called me 'boring'. One bartender asked if I would be willing to try one of their drinks similar to an espresso martini, to which I agreed, however I still did not enjoy and requested a regular (boring and basic) espresso martini. They said they typically avoid making these popular drinks, but made an exception for me. Which is really unfortunate, because it was one of the best espresso martinis I've had in the city. Both bartenders later apologized for their comments, but I'm unsure if they were genuine or trying to save face. All in all, if you're willing to explore untraditional cocktails with a cozy vibe, you should try this place.
