Wednesday night before Thanksgiving we stopped in. So wants to cook anyway. The traditional look for Tasty Taco. Family photos on the walls. The lady behind the register was very kind. Not our first time I got the steak flour taco. Hungry hubby got a steak and a pork flour taco. He also tried a steak enchilada. We purchase the sour cream and get waters to drink. Snag our number and take a seat. You get booths or table. Nice music playing. People's numbers are called out and soon enough our food came up. Really hit the spot. Can't go wrong with their flour taco. Hubby might pass on the enchiladas in the future cause the love of the taco shell is what brings us and is our favorites. Either you're a Tasty Tacos person or you aren't. The food here us slightly different from your average fast food tacos. Their original tacos are fried puffy shells with meat, beans, lettuce and cheese. Always get the hot sauce you see sitting around. The flour nachos are delicious with the salsa as well. The service is order and pay at the counter and you're given a number. Go to your table and wait patiently. It's a no frills restaurant as far as ambiance and decor. If you're going here for the first time, stand in line, place your order, keep your receipt, it has your order number on it. Get your beverage while you wait and grab a table. Make it quick, this place fills up for lunch everyday at noon. It's clean and obviously decorated with red, yellow and green. Be kind and give the staff some grace, the tables get dirty when they are busy. They do turn over quickly, those who eat here regularly know to eat and get going for other customers. They always seems to have a great staff with good service who get things done. Hadn't been to a TT in quite a while. Reading some of the reviews, I was a bit tentative, but I really enjoyed what I got. Is it authentic Mexican food? I dunno...this is the Midwest and it's about par for the course in that area, but once you've decided that's what you're in the mood for, it's pretty good grub. I got two fluffy flour chicken tacos. $3.25 seemed like it might be a bit high priced, BUT a serving of two was a good-sized lunch portion for me, so I'd say it was a reasonable value. My tacos were tasty, chocked full of chicken, and nicely filled with lettuce and cheddar cheese. The salsa on the table had a decent bit of a kick to it, and added nicely to the entree. During the 30 minutes or so we were there the line was always 5-6 deep, but the food was coming out in about 3-4 minutes per order, so that seemed like a reasonable wait time. There were plenty of tables, even with the steady stream of customers, the bathrooms were clean, and service was polite. All in all, a good experience! read more

I called order in was told 15 min drove to store and waited 20 more min finally ask about my order they finally came out with it 3 soft tacos these were basiclt empty tacos maybe a teaspoon of meat in each one they should just raise the price and let us decide if we still want to purchase them rather then skimp on what we have been buying since the 70's. Americanized greasy "Mexican" food. That is what this is. I grew up poor in Des Moines and a treat we always used to do was Tasty Tacos. Well it's not as great when you're an adult in my opinion. Rather bland, just greasy food, that leaves you wanting some real authentic tacos (assuming you've ever had them). Just left this place with no food. I'm a bit confused because I called my order ahead and was told ten minutes. I arrived ten minutes later and they WERE busy. I stood under the sign that said phone order pick-up. After they checked out four customers that were walk-ins, another person came out started ringing up more walk-in customers while I could see my bag of tacos behind them just sitting there. After being ignored at the phone order line I just left. I guess I just don't see the point in a phone order pick-up line if you still have to wait till all the walk-in customers are rung up first. Food is great as always but the staff aren't the friendliest. I ordered fried mushrooms and she put in 5 orders. The manager (I believe), voided 4 of the orders and asked the employee how did she get 5 orders. With an attitude, she raised her voice at him and said, "I know for sure she said 5 orders." That was one incident. Another time, I placed an order over the phone and spoke to Mike. He said it will take 10 minutes. I gave him an extra 15 minutes before picking it up. Not good. What they serve are not tacos. Corn taco means a fried crunchy shell. When I think of taco I think two small corn tortillas with meat, onions, and cilantro with some different salsa to spread on top. I don't think cilantro has ever been in that building. The one salsa they had was no good but there was mustard. Wait we don't put mustard on tacos. The tacos are not tasty. Taco Bell is five stars when compared to this here place. The cheese they used...maybe the worst aspect of the whole place. Very wonderful staff though. Their tacos taste different from anywhere else I've been in my life, they taste REAL. Their flour tacos and nachos are the staple items, must try! Their decor is order at the counter from an old school looking menu, which is interesting. The whole feel with the restaurant is like a family run place. They have expanded so much I think they are available to everyone in the area. One thing I learned is that their burritos are very small...order a lot if you plan to get full. Their sides are tasty as well. Staff is friendly, but you won't really interact with them. This place is just as good as the others! read more

Food is pretty good but the salsa is old and fermented every time. I spent 60 dollars on food for my office and got old salsa that was sweet and looked carbonated it was so old. They tried to tell me it was from the grinder, complete bs. It was disgusting. Have some respect for your customers and at least serve us fresh salsa. I asked when the salsa was made he says we make our salsa fresh everyday. They key thing they don't mention is they store the fresh salsa until they run out of the old. I told him I'm 100% sure this salsa wasn't made today. The manager then tells me even if the salsa is a few days old it's good to eat. I grew up in Des Moines and somehow managed to move away before ever eating here. I finally went there on a visit home and now can't imagine a trip to Des Moines without eating at Tasty Tacos! It's a fantastic, greasy, delicious indulgence. Not sure what has happened here. We used to eat at Tasty Taco's all the time. The flour tacos are a cesspool of grease and bland flavor. And the help on this particular day did not look clean at all.
