Disappointing . Ordered 2 of the $6.50 margaritas , ck came and we were charged for 2 skinny for $11 each plus an extra $2 each for extra shot of tequila. Glass was a 10 oz glass that they said was 12oz. I don't like being cheated. This sort of thing happened last time I went about a year ago, they overcharged me. Granted they fixed it when I complained but I'm not frequenting an establishment that I have to double check my check. Too bad it's the only Mexican in Rocky Hill. Food was ok, not great. Very easy to under rate this place. Does not have the look of a normal Mexican style restaurant but has excellent food. Love the chips and salsa. Not too spicy and chips are not the real thin type. I got the Chimichanga Acapulco which is done with beef, chicken and shrimp. If you want to get full fast this will do it. Had 5 people in our party and they had some new servers which slowed us some. One of our people never got her food. It got missed when they put in the order. We had to wave a manager down to get someone to get the food and she got hers about the time we were wrapping up. Mistakes happen and it was a new server. However, not one apology from the managers that we had to flag down. Just brought food and handed off. 90% of other places would have spoken and explained the issue or at least reduce the charge. Since we were bringing guests of our here for them, I am sure we will never bring them again here. read more

An OK Mexican restaurant. I only ate here once, and just lunch (and just me, so not much sampling of the menu). I have to agree with others who say it's a little pricey, and nothing really stood out. Salsa was very ordinary as were the a la carte items I ordered-- standard fare available at just about any Mexican place, with not much difference either way in quality or quantity. Service, ambience, décor-- all just fine. If it were the closest Mexican place to my house, I'm sure I'd end up going back (I LOVE Mexican--I LIVE FOR Mexican!). But, not any reason to go out of my way for a repeat visit. PS I'm also trying hard to use the 4 and 5 star ratings for places that really stand out! Love good Mexican food, can't seem to find it here in Knox. Used to be soccer taco was a great place to go then they expanded the plates got smaller and the quality suffered. That said tried Casa Don Gallo and it had the potential to be good, but you know what they say about potential, it is just wasted effort. We arrived and we're seated right away. Ordered drinks and was given the complimentary chips and salsa with them. The salsa was good the chips were fresh. Then we waited, and we waited, and we waited. I had high hopes that we were getting fresh made entrees. That was not the case. As in most Mexican places around here it is just an assembly line with your food sitting in warming trays waiting to be put together. How can I explain this best? Oh yes the plate was hotter than the food. If a health inspector had walked in and checked the holding temps I am certain they would have shut down the place. Taste was average, food was luke warm. Service was atrocious, our server spent more time at the bar talking with friends than checking his tables. We saw him three times, never offered refills till we were finished eating, never asked how it was etc.. The best thing about this place was the hostess who was constantly cleaning the menus. She was all over it. And the waitress who was running the curb side delivery. That woman earned every tip she got. read more

To begin with the chips were stale and the salsa tasted like tomato soup. Not good. The molcajete dish had one shrimp in it, no pork, or cactus and very little flavor. The food here was amazing!!! We are in town for a few days and really wanted Mexican food. This was definitely what we were in the mood for!! I got the enchiladas San Miguel (I think that was what it was called) and it was pretty much enchiladas but with queso on them instead of red enchilada sauce. They were to die for! A lot of vegetarian meals taste like they're missing something at a lot of restaurants, but this didn't disappoint in the slightest. It was a bit expensive for a vegetarian meal, but honestly worth the price because it was so good and came with a massive portion. My husband got fajitas and loved his as well. Also big portions. His margarita was just okay- nothing to write home about. Honestly would have given 5 stars if not for the service. We sat on the patio (our preference because of Covid--+ it was nice out and there was even heaters on the patio). It looked like the tables inside were getting good service (but be warned they were NOT socially distanced at all), but our server took probably close to 10 minutes to bring us our waters the first time, then dropped off the food and never came back to check on us until we were almost done- never mind the fact we'd be munching on chips and salsa earlier and were eating spicy food and had pretty much drained our waters. We asked for more water, our server left, then he came back to clean a table behind us without our waters...we had to ask a second time for waters. Thankfully we got them, but by that point we were ready for the bill. Overall 4/5 stars. Definitely come for the food! Just be aware they're not sitting tables spaciously for COVID and at least if you sit outside, your service may not be the best. The food is literally amazing though. Really hate to give a local place a bad review, but we've given this place at least 10 chances. Food is always incorrect and mediocre at best. We are held hostage in Rocky Hill with no other options. We usually get takeout, and paid $22.50 tonight for 3 steak tacos prepared incorrectly. Response from manager was to bring the food back. The whole point of takeout is to be home. Ugh-We ALWAYS tell ourselves we won't be back so this is totally our fault, but hopefully this saves someone some trouble! Adios! read more

Went on a Friday night at 6 pm because I didn't expect much wait...I was correct... the place is too loud and too tightly spaced for a nice evening meal atmosphere... my bad for choosing Fri night....maybe better for me on a weekday at off times... the food was quality ingredients but was bland as hell...no flavor, not greasy which is a plus...no real south of the border flavor in the salsa, queso, or entree...good but my preference is for TexMex or authentic Mexican taste...it's like they are trying to please their patrons and diluted the recipes.... The Cheese Steak Quesadilla was the bomb. The tortilla shell was cooked to perfection, the steak was juicy and tender, and the cheese was melted to the perfect consistency. The rice and veggies that accompanied it were clearly very fresh. This place has the average cost of a restaurant but the freshness and flavor is way above average. The meal started with salsa and chips like most Mexican places and they were what you would expect. I'm 99.9% sure it was bottled salsa and the chips were mediocre at best. We ordered 2 tequilas(Milagro Silver) which were $8 each and really enjoyed that. The server was nice but didn't offer the happy hour $3 tequila until after we had the $8 one. Now onto the main courses. My wife ordered a Chicken Taco with Mexican Rice and really enjoyed it. I had 3 Carnitas Tacos and a side of Mexican Rice. First off, the rice was very flavorful and probably the best Mexican Rice I've ever had. The tacos were good but not great. I got some sour cream($1 ) and some very hot tomatillo sauce on the side which helped out the flavor of the tacos. The tacos came with shredded pork, raw diced onion and cilantro. I really wish they would have had homemade fresh salsa with freshly made chips. Just that alone would have put this place in the upper tier with me. So to sum it up... Not a bad place to ease your cravings but definitely not the best Knoxville has to offer. We will give it another shot soon. read more

This place is good but it is a bit pricey. The margaritas can be very expensive especially if you order a top-shelf. The salads are good here. One time I ordered a chimichanga and the beans and the chimichanga were cold. I enjoy eating out on their patio. This place is a lot of fun for birthdays. It has turned into a neighborhood restaurant and it quite good. They have a ceviche that is good and so are the rellenos. If you sit at the bar you will feel short because the stools are short. Your shoulders come to where the bar is. It's really quite funny. This place is really pretty good so give it a shot. read more

Both were terrible. Ordered a side of verde sauce, not only brought me tomatillo salsa instead, but then proceeded to charge me a dollar to doctor up my flavorless burrito. I wanted to like you so bad House of the Rooster. Especially since we are moving just a few blocks away. The staff is nice and the place is clean, but I just can't seem to bring myself to pay for such poor quality again. El Girasol not only costs less, but is lightyears better in quality and flavor. The food at Casa Don Gallo is ok, but not great for the price. During my most recent visit, my sister and I split a pitcher of margaritas and each ordered a vegetarian entree. Our bill was $65 before tip, a bit steep in my opinion considering the size and quality of the food. The margaritas are great though! I always order the "skinny" margarita which is made with agave nectar and actual lime juice rather than the thick sugary mix you get at some restaurants. The patio is nice and the service is good. Wife and I ate here recently. The restaurant was half full, for lunchtime, on a weekend day. We were sat at a table that wasn't fully cleaned. When I asked somebody to please clean the table, I guess maybe I didn't score points with the lethargic and kind of unmotivated, unenthusiastic staff. 5 minutes later somebody came by to clean the table. And the restaurant is mostly empty when it should be full of patrons, why? On to the meal I ordered the 3 tacos filled with not much, overcooked pieces of tiny meat, topped with some onion and cilantro, which tasted ok. The side order of fried plantains was very good. I thought my meal was a bit pricey for what I actually received which is a bit out of character for the Knoxville Mexican restaurant(s) scene which normally serves larger portions of adequate Mexican food at a good price. This meal was not a good value and I can't say I really enjoyed the food or the atmosphere or the service. I'm still going to give the restaurant a 3 rating because it probably was better than a 2 and really wasn't bad and I probably was just a bit turned off by being sat at a not very clean table. I am a regular at Casa Don Gallo, it is my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. Gabby, the owner, is always happy to see new and old customers and will probably come give you a hug if she spots you from across the room! The service is always top notch, if you sit at the bar Salvatore is one of the best and most fun bartenders I've met. He makes great drinks and can also balance your food orders. The frozen margaritas are the best (and strongest) I've had anywhere. Some items to try: The Burrito Gigante, basically just a huge burrito with cheese or red sauce topping. You can order it with your choice of meat filling. I recommend the pork or chicken. There is also a house special that is served in a lava rock with fajita meats, shrimp, chicken, onions, steak, green peppers, etc. You can split it with 2 people and it is plenty of food, served with corn or flour tortillas. It is delicious! Overall it's a great place to visit if you're in the area, plenty of patio seating, TVs if you want to watch sports at the bar, and it is also family friendly! read more

We waited quite a long time for our server between times he came to our table, for example, getting our drinks took more than 10 minutes. It was busy, but I do run out of patience eventually, like anyone else. When we finally got our food he brought no silverware. I stood up and found the bartender who essentially went to get our server, who delivered silverware a couple minutes later, stone-faced and without apology. Later when I ordered a beer our server quickly rushed away without asking what I wanted. He seemed to prefer not giving us time to ask for anything. It was just not his night, but he also seemed to not notice or care that he was doing poorly. The salsa was great but chips weren't, and my quesadilla was bland. Nothing to write home about. We had lunch here yesterday, and it was pretty good. I got the taco trio which consists of soft tacos - one with chicken, one with pork, and one with steak. They came with onions, cilantro, a spicy sauce, and pinto beans. The tacos were really good. The meat was cooked well and very flavorful. The pinto beans were just okay. Not much flavor. We also got some guacamole which was pretty good but not great. And their house salsa didn't have a whole lot of flavor. I was really happy with my entree but the app wasn't great. Everything that I have eaten has been delicious--avocado salsa, tamales, tacos al pastor, tacos baja, arroz con pollo, pork belly tacos, and the list goes on and on! (If you enjoy a good margarita, try the skinny with housemate mix; if you want to kick it up a notch, try it with the jalapeño tequila!) The ingredients are fresh, and it doesn't look, smell or taste like your typical, generic Mexican restaurant. I've eaten at a ton of Mexican restaurants and this may be my favorite. Their entrees are phenomenal. I ordered the pollo can arroz. The chicken has so much flavor. Their cheese sauce is excellent. My wife ordered a chimichanga and this was amazing. The pick de Gallo isn't just for looks anymore as this was one her favorite parts of the meal. The beans are also very good. Will enjoy many more meals here. The service was excellent. We came in within an hour to close and they were still very professional and polite. Our food came out quickly with no issues.
