I visited this place with a BIG group and they were able to accommodate the entire soccer team and families. We did make a reservation ahead of time. Which I totally recommend. Other than us, I didn't see any other big parties. Servers were attentive and tried their very best. Honestly, this is the only reason I'm giving these many starts. The service was great, they took our order in a timely manner and orderly. Making sure the checks were separated the right way. Drinks came quickly but the food took over an hour to come out. The food itself wasn't great. It was decent but some of our plates were already cold while others were really hot. In my opinion, the price felt a bit high for the quality of the food. I eat here about 9 times a year, and it's quite good. Sometimes the service has been a bit poor, but I've learned to sit at the bar where I'm served by Carlos, or, most recently on June 30, Katherine. I tend to go early, around opening time, so service is fast and efficient. The frozen Margaritas are excellent, and I love their salsa, which they keep my bowl filled with (good job Carlos!). Tons of parking, and the menu is quite varied. It's a bit of a drive for me, about 11 miles, but worth it. I have a 2nd choice of Mexican restaurants 3 miles away - the food isn't quite as good, BUT they have a "salsa bar" with a huge selection of toppings - wish Pelanchos would do that!!!! I've never had a bad meal at Pelanchos, and do try to vary from my favorites, which isn't easy. read more

My favorite dish, and maybe in all of Knoxville is the "Arroz con Cameron" (Rice with Shrimp) with a delicious Mexican cheese sauce over about 10 or more very large charred and marinated shrimp with vegetables including avocados! My chili relleno was absolutely delicious. I should have ordered two of them instead of the taco. The taco was good, just not as special as the chili relleno. We loved the chips and salsa. If you know anything about East Tennessee, you know it's choc-full of Mexican restaurants. I believe Pelanchos is one that gets looked over. (Maybe that's a good thing because the crowds are always manageable.) I have always appreciated that no matter what time of day or how crazy it gets, there always seems to be a table ready for us. I have not waited around a single time. The food has always been hot, delicious, and largely portioned. I've recently come to enjoy their frozen strawberry margarita (you can choose between the sugar or salt rim), and it is amazing. Knowing how Knoxville is big with "trendy" bars that make you pay $15 for a teeny cocktail, you get $7 for a generously-sized marg. I also love that even when it's busy or loud, the booths they have give plenty of space from the rest of the room. I've always been able to enjoy my conversations and of course, the chips and salsa are great, too. I've also never had a problem with the waitstaff. They're super timely and I'm always surprised at how consistent the food tastes and is when it arrives. Pelanchos for the win. read more

I have enjoyed the Chicken Quesadilla, with grilled chicken, the last three times I visited Pelanchos. It is a tortilla filled primarily with cheese, chicken, and various other ingredients such vegetables, then folded and cooked on a griddle or pan until the cheese is melted and the exterior is golden brown. It is great and it is up there with my other favorite which is the Chiles Relleno which is a is a type of stuffed pepper that is filled with cheese, battered, and fried. Yum. read more

Everything about Pelanchos hollers Mexico from its menu to its creative and colorful decor. The only thing missing was a Mariachi band. We headed there for an early dinner after a movie at a nearby theater. Immediately someone arrived at the table with a bowl of chips. Then he proceeded to pour two saucers full of puréed salsa from what looked like a syrup container, the ones you might find at a pancake house. While the margaritas, the Camarones Ajillo, the house Fajitas and the combos we ordered were tasty, the desserts were beyond tasty -- downright fantastic! The canalitas con ice cream and the conotellas (sweets with buñuelos or sugared fritters, ice and whipped cream drizzled with chocolate) were beautifully presented. While not our favorite Mexican grill, it's certainly worth a return visit. read more

If I could give zero stars I would! First off the server was asking us what we want to drink before we even sat down.... I've never been here before I need a second to look at the menu. Second the margarita that I got tasted like a glass of lime juice mixed with sprite, it was horrific...... Then there were no descriptions for what comes with the fajitas and it came with refried beans which I find so unappetizing. When I asked to swap out for black beans the server didn't offer to take the disgusting pile of mush out from in front of me. And to top it off I found a hair in my sour cream. Carlos was probably one of the worst servers that I've had since the entire week that I spent in Tennessee. I don't live around here but if I did I could assure you I wouldn't come back and I really hope this review helps locals make the right decision and not come to this disgusting excuse for a restaurant. read more

The food is always consistent and the service is good. The only issues we have are when paying our bill. It's usually just rhe two of us eating so the bill will vary slightly from 40 to 45 dollars. I am old school and like to psy with cash. Two weeks ago I was short charged by $10 which would have gone to our server who was very apologetic. I explained the $10 should gonto her towards her tip. They told me they had to wait until they cash out the drawer. My wife and I returned this evening, tonight also again paying with a $100 bill I was short changed $5. When I asked to speak with the manager she ignored us. I spoke with our server who came back with the correct change. I spoke with the manager who takes the money she acted as if she had no idea what was wrong. My point is be very careful when paying with cash. We think they may be doing this purposely. read more

My carne asada was a gray and rubbery hunk of unidentifiable meat- chewing it wore out my jaw. It came with 3 thin slices of a quartered avocado, not enough tomato or onion, and way too much refried beans. If I wasn't with a friend who had previously raved about the place, I probably would have just said something to the manager and left. This is my first time here. I was acknowledged as soon as I walked in. She was smiling and pleasant. I was promptly seated. Within a couple of minutes, my server was there to greet me and take my order. Another server came with fresh tortilla chips and salsa. I got the lunch chimichanga with rice & refried beans. The restaurant was more concerned with closing on time than taking care of customers on Cinco de Mayo. On the plus side I was able to get a margarita from the bar but was not allowed to get any food. They had the money to hire two security officers but not enough money to hire waiters for all the empty tables they had. This is the last time I will ever go to this place. Decided to meet a friend here for dinner. Haven't been here in many years and I have no recollection of what I got back then so I had nothing to compare to. We both ordered fajitas. Hers was chicken, shrimp & onion. Mine chicken, steak and all regular veggies it comes with. (Onion, pepper, tom.) The chicken and steak were cut up so small and the fajita veg was so overcooked, like mush in oil. No wonder our food came out so fast. Lord knows how long it had been cooking. The whole meal was bland. Where's the spice? I don't necessarily mean spicy, I mean spices like black pepper, paprika or oregano or something! The guacamole that comes on the side was on its last legs because it was dark and separating. I came hoping this Mexican meal would be at least a bit better than the other boring Mexican restaurants around Knox/Blount but sadly no. $20 for meh. Food is good, they cut the chicken strip in half (size) but same price. I had some hot chips, and old ones on the bottom. Pelanchos used to have the best margaritas in town, but now, you don't even get a small buzz from any of them, it's just more mix, which causes the worst heartburn for me. I'm highly disappointed in the changes. Does every restaurant have to rip the customers a big one? Is there not one honest business out there anywhere anymore? A very inconsistent establishment. We eat here about every 2 weeks as it is my Monster in Laws favorite. I am from Los Angeles and Angelinos would ratio this place off the map. They get the chips right though and that is a good thing. Their Carnitas is so dry most times but occasionally they will get it right. That is where the problem lies, it is just not consistently bad or good. Today for instance, the Carnitas was so dry no amount of Verde could soften it. It actually crunched when I chewed. Out of everything here I think the Arroz Con Pollo is the most reliable dish day to day. Good service and very clean with friendly people. So, I've never took the time out and looked around when I went and watched movies right across the parking lot. Luckily, I got to try out Pelancho's, several weeks back and I'm just now getting around to writing about it because there wasn't that many things that were memorable to me. Probably the most memorable thing was that Pelancho's has fresh guacomole. I came here on a quiet weekend afternoon with a group of friends on the purpose of a going away lunch :(. That quickly turned upside down as pitchers of margaritas came out. The margaritas weren't too bad, they were cheap and I thought tasty. The only thing I ordered, as I didn't feel like eating a large lunch was a Taco Salad. I do have to admit that it was tasty. The price was manageable and the value that I got was worth it. Our waiter was nice and was attentive, and my experience was good! The only thing I do have to say about this place is that the age of the building is starting to show. The bathroom were pretty disgusting. I believe one of the pipes under the sink wasn't connected and had a bucket there to pick up the leftover water and it just wasn't that clean. All in all, Pelancho's is okay. I'm pretty sure there are better mexican restaurants out there, but I guess if you want that fresh guacomole, this restaurant can be on your list. I didn't get to try out any of their other menu items as they could be amazing and I just missed out. I'll update if I ever come back and order something else on the menu. read more

I've been coming here since I was 13. It was amazing up until last year. We got our ground beef served to us pink and chunky. It was disgusting. We went back since because they have cheap kids meals and there lunch menu is fairly good. However, last night the meal was just not up to other Mexican restaurants in the areas standards. The only things I really enjoy at this Mexican restaurant is their quesadillas and margaritas. They chile rellenos and tamales aren't what they are worked up to be. The chimichanga I consider a basic and its not all that. The Pelancho's Burrito is not all that either. It is completely over-sauced. If you go there to eat, try a margarita with your quesadilla.
