I went in yesterday with my boyfriend. Honestly I was curious after a lot of the hype and things we had been told. When we got there it had just opened. Immediately we were greeted by our server with such a positive attitue. She gave us time to look and decide. When we placed our order it was maybe 10 minutes until our food reached the table. Let me say this. I now understand how they have been in business for so long. They have true MEXICAN food in Abilene. It reminds us of places near the border if not over. I chose Casa Herrera due to its closeness to the movie theater. I was encouraged by their promise for quick service as I was hoping to see a movie immediately following what was to be my first restaurant meal in Abilene. Five minutes from time of order. That's all it took for the food to come out which raises questions of freshness. The food was decent, but that is all. It suffered most apparently from excessive grease. Everything also seemed to suffer from being cheap in quality, as if Casa wasn't going the extra mile in its grocery shopping. Small lunch buffet on a Sunday at 11:30, but very tasty. It was more authentic Mexican dishes, as opposed to the hyper spiced "Tex-mex". Cleanliness and attention to presentation and fresh quality was evident by the kitchen staff. 5 stars for them. The hostess and wait staff are the issue w this, otherwise, lovely establishment. Ok so it has been about 23 years since I have been here. They are in a new building so for me some of the charm was lost but I was still excited to eat here. My favorite thing back in day were the Chimichangas with Queso. (Before you say it I am aware that the Chimichanga is a Tex-Mex/American invention but who cares it is really good here or it was) My wife ordered the "Monterey Plate" which consisted of cheese enchiladas, a chalupa and a taco. She was very happy with the Enchiladas saying 3 different times how good they were. The other stuff was good too but the Enchiladas were the star of here plate however I will say the Refried Beans were the co-star. Every Mexican Restaurant has beans either Refried or Charra and I will say most are lacking. They Beans here are awesome, seasons perfectly and just the right amount of Lard to add the right flavor. The Chimichangas were just as I remembered. They are not big like other places they are rolled thin like an enchilada and fried then topped with a cheese sauce We will definitely be back when traveling through. Pretty good, I enjoyed the Brisket Plate. Large cubes of brisket that have been seared off with some onions and bell peppers. Tender and tasty. Recommended VERY QUICKLY when I asked the server what was good. He had a big ole smile when he recommended it - he obviously really enjoyed the dish - how could I say no? My wife had Enchiladas with the Verde sauce- I liked the Verde sauce a lot. I would get a side of the sauce for the brisket - that would rock together! The owner (i think) greeted us and was VERY nice. Our server seemed a little nervous, but did a great job! My only knocks would be seemingly store bought tortillas....which is a big shame... The salsa was a little weak, but was OK - I cant say it was bad - also the restaurant was rather dark. Not necessarily a bad thing, considering they allowed my ugly mug in.... First off, I highly recommended the Jaurez margarita. The additional Grand Mariner really makes that drink for me. The food is always good, I have had enchiladas, tamales, quesadillas, and nachos. Every time I have enjoyed my meal, not the best Mexican food I have ever had but it hits the spot! I also like to support the local Abilene family that owns Casa Herrara. I ordered beef fajitas for lunch today. The beef was cold (cold as in out of the fridge) and tasteless. The waitress was spot on with everything, and my two sides as well as the plate was hot. It appears the kitchen staff forgot to warm the beef. The meet tasted more like stew meat than Fajita beef. This was my first time to eat at this restaurant, and it will be the last as well. First off, great atmosphere with a nice selection of buffet choices. Kids prices are very reasonable for buffet. I would be cautious about picking up the plates at the buffet. Bring a napkin. They come out steaming hot! Several people in line were commenting on this matter. The buffet makes it hard to reach the food on the other side. It would be nice if they had space to have two sides. Casa Herrera is a great, family-owned Tex-Mex restaurant. Liz and Chris Herrera and their daughters have managed the place themselves for more than 30 years, know their customers and pride themselves on friendly service. The food is good and very consistent. My favorite is the fajitas or cheese enchiladas but the chicken enchiladas are very good, too. Their beans and rice are good, but pretty standard fare. I prefer the charro beans, which are excellent. The salsa is made fresh in the restaurant and so the amount of heat will vary seasonally with the heat of the fresh jalapeños. The Sunday buffet is a great buy and includes a wide variety from their menu. Abilene has many Tex-Mex restaurants that are locally owned. I consider Casa Herrera to be one of the top two. read more

I saw a post on FB about Casa Herrera and told my husband we needed to check it out. We went that weekend and it did not disappoint! Very friendly atmosphere, clean, very good food, and courteous staff. We enjoyed it so much we actually went back again the next weekend! I tried another meal this time and it was sooo good! I really like their warm chips and salsa! I normally don't eat that kind of stuff but ... yeah!!!! These are very good to me - esp since the chips are not salty. Great family atmosphere! read more

Now first thing I should tell you about this place is I'm very biased. I have been coming here since I could basically talk. Its a mexican food restaurant that is my favorite in town. They have great food, the owner and staff is super nice. If you are ever traveling through Abilene I would recommend this place by far. Starting off with the appetizer. My favorite (as always) is the queso. The best thing about this is there are 3 different sizes that are reasonable priced. Its probably one of my top 5 quesos just because I've been getting it for years. Next is the meals. I usually always get the CHICKEN fajitas. Its my FAVORITE!! The combo is really good as well (because cute guy loves his steak) but I LOVE the chicken. Its a very different style of fajitas but its by far my favorite. They are my come back to fajitas...its what I compare all the other fajitas and they never get beat. So good. The tacos are great as well and the taco salad. I have at least tasted everything and I love it all. They also have a great lunch buffet that has all varities of their food and is also very tasty. All of the food has a great flavor in my opinion. I had my first Casa Herrera experience last night and it was a really good one! I am a chips and dip fanatic and definitely approve of their salsa. Great flavor and just the right amount of spiciness. The #29 was recommended (flour tortilla beef enchiladas with a unique spicy red chile sauce, rice, and beans), so I ordered it and really enjoyed it. Mild eaters beware because it is spicy, but very different tasting sauce and very good. All in all a great experience! read more

First, I would like to say that I sincerely hope this review does not get filtered as I would like to save any future dinner diners from the tragic mistake we made this past Saturday night to eat here. On a previous visit we had gone to Abuelos and had an enjoyable dinner, but wanted to try something new this time, so we went to Yelp, Urban Spoon and Uptake. Both my friend that I was visiting and myself reside in Houston and have visited and/or lived in San Antonio and Austin, so I will gladly admit that both he and I are used to very good Mexican food. That said though, we did not judge Casa Herrera in comparison but on its own complete lack of merit. Let's start with some of the most important things at a Mexican restaurant...salsa, chips & queso. When we sat down Saturday night, we ordered this along with a top shelf margarita on the rocks w/salt for me and dos equis amber for him. After ordering our queso, salsa and chips, our waitress informed us that the top shelf margaritas were pre made and "sat aside to sit" since the start of the day (and I don't mean the mix was premade and they added tequila, as a lot of restaurants do that. I mean the whole drink w/the liquor was premade and sitting out since they opened). Since that was many hours ago at this point, I asked if it was possible to have a fresher one. She said she would check and went to get our queso, salsa and chips. The chips were not only cold, they were quite obviously store bought chips and not even restaurant style store bought chips at that (I would have gladly traded them for a bag of Tostitos). The salsa had an odd smell/taste, that while not inedible, made pace picante sauce taste like some of the best salsa ever. Both of these items (and I harp on this due to some of the reviews on here raving about the chips & salsa) could have and would have been overlooked for some yummy queso. My friend and I LOVE queso. Almost any meal problem can be solved by good queso. Sadly, this was easily the absolute WORST queso we've ever had. And I have eaten Tex Mex in New Jersey! It was pasty, with no discernable peppers or anything at all in it, and had specs of what appeared to be/tasted like actual powdered cheese. It was so bad we couldn't even finish it, and it was a small. We were extremely disappointed to say the least but thought well, if the drinks come and they are good, we can at least try the entrees. Almost 15 minutes goes by. Still no drinks. We watch our waitress take care of her other table's drinks and another table receives a pitcher of margaritas and dos equis. Then another 15 minutes goes by. We sit there with our chips, salsa and the saddest queso ever contemplating what to do. Leave or Go? Our drinks arrive. Now, I realize I asked for a margarita on the rocks if possible that hadn't been sitting out since the morning, but this was basically lemonade mix from the soda dispenser with tequila thrown in served a pint glass with no salt or anything and almost no ice! Yuck! At this point we politely threw in the towel, left a nice tip despite of everything and went to Abuelos. Now I know, some might say we didn't stay so this review is not fair, but after nearly 45 minutes of close to inedible drinks & food and poor service, can you blame us? read more

I was really disappointed to walk in and find that the hostess had a permanent scowl on her face. Chalking it up to RBF, I smiled and told her we had 3 adults, a child and an infant to which I received a blatant eye roll and was passed along to another hostess who had just slightly less of an attitude. Each employee that we encountered seemed to suffer from the same problem. If there food had been fantastic, I'd understand the pretension, but it was pretty mediocre. My husband and I waited fifteen minutes after were were done eating for our waitress to bring us our check....probably because the staff was too busy standing around talking to one another and standing around. I'm from Houston, and while some might say our Tex-Mex doesn't stack up to, say, San Antonio, it's still pretty darn good. And I have eaten at places like this all over the state. Casa Herrera is ok, nothing more. Perhaps I went on a bad day...but after being seated, I waited about 5 minutes and then had to ask to have my order taken (may I add that the place was only about half full). The chips and salsa are actually not bad, with thicker, crunchy chips and salsa that had just enough kick for my taste. The rice and beans were decent, not great, but not terrible. But the entree...well, let's say it was a couple of pretty bland enchiladas and a taco with a shell that had definitely gone stale and had that nice chewy sort of texture that hard shells should never have. If I find myself back in Abilene, I'll probably find another Tex-Mex place for lunch. read more

First time coming and have been wanting to try this place. Had the chicken fajita salad and it was literally the worst fajita meat I have ever had! Very dry and the whole thing was bland! I brought it home for my dogs...IF they'll even eat it. I couldn't even eat it as it was awful and decided to swing by Whataburger afterward and have their very flavorful chicken fajita taco! If I could give this a zero star rating I would but my sister said her sliced jalapeños added a little flavor to her meal. I like this place. The service is always great (compared to other places in Abilene like Mary's or Oscar's or Farolito), and the food is good for the price. I had the lunch buffet and there was a good assortment. I prefer shredded beef to ground but the taco's and enchiladas were really good. Authentic chips and salsa and pretty busy for lunch. I hate places that have no one there so that was a plus. The burritos said they were "combination" but it was only cheese and beans. I wish there was some meat in it. I've lived in San Antonio for 13 years, my wife is from The Valley, and I've been in Mexico. I've tried a wide variety of Mexican restaurants. Casa is good, but it's not authentic. Just really good Tex-Mex. I had the 2 burrito plate, and my son the Supreme Nachos. My other son wanted to be "that guy" and order a chicken fried steak so I won't talk about that (lol). The salsa was very good. My plate definitely had a taste of not entirely being made from scratch, but it was tasty. Meat was seasoned well, but the ranchero sauce tasted like the salsa brought to the table with the chips. Not a bad choice because it tasted good, but that's not a norm when ranchero sauce is made. The Nachos were nothing special. Like I said, don't come here if you're looking for something authentic. If you like Tex-Mex you'll live here. read more

My family has been going here since I was a little girl! They have moved locations since then, but the mouth watering food has never changed! If you have not been you are definitely missing out! If you're looking for authentic Mexican food in Abilene, look no further! The owners Liz & Chris Herrera will see to it that you are treated like family and taken care of. The servers are very knowledgeable and friendly~we always requested Sally because she remembered "our usual" and took time out to converse and check on us. The live music (on certain nights), ice cold beers & margaritas will definitely have you ready to dance! I could never just recommend one thing on the menu~IT'S ALL GOOD!
