Pleasantly surprised!!! I was visiting family in Connecticut and I told my Aunti I was in the mood for Mexican and she said that I had to come here as it was the best. Honestly I was not expecting much as I was in New England and I am from the PNW and married to a Latina. First off they served their salsa in a small craft which I thought was really cool. However the salsa was very mild and lacking flavor. Now being married to a Latina I like spice. So I asked our server for spicy salsa and it did not disappoint. Slightly Smokey with a really nice kick on the back end. I ended up eating the whole ramekin. When I ordered my meal the Chili Colorado and asked for it to be spicy and once again it was spot on. The steak was tender and melted in your mouth and the sauce was the perfect consistency that would have impressed my MIL. I have ordered frequently to go from this restaurant when I went in this Sunday to pick up my order I was a little taken aback at their inspection rating of FAIR.Made me a little uneasy also the fact that it was 5 PM and only one couple in the dining room. I don't know what's happened to this place but I will never go back. The food was inedible when I called to speak to Jose the manager he was rude. Even commented that he has never gotten a complaint about the food which anyone in the business knows that's impossible. My refried beans I poured down down the sink. They were like water. The beef enchilada was flattened like a pancake, hardly any meat in it and taste terrible The chicken enchilada had knuckle meat and balls of meat. It looked disgusting. The guacamole had nothing in it, but onions The manager offered no apologies. He was obviously upset. I was giving him feedback on my to go order in the nicest way possible and when I suggested that they get a discount the next time I order to go, he said we don't do that. That's when I hung up. This is an authentic Mexican restaurant that is so much fun to go to. The decor is all hand painted and so very festive. I have eaten here probably fifty times but never posted a review. The cocktails are delicious and they are good at customizing any drink request. Definitely get the guacamole with the salsa and chips that they give you. Fresh and delicious. I had the spinach enchilada and I always ask for their hot sauce. Definitely adds a kick. Black beens are purely perfect. Very healthy meal. My diner companion had a omelette beef dish that he loved. Unfortunately, the food is mediocre at best with microwaved textures and seriously lacks any real Latin flavors. Service was careless, and downright rude, taking zero care to seating, serving, packing the take home box (it was nearly thrown at us upon asking for it), and cashing us out. The server was the only staff member seen with only three tables going. They were the host and server which doesn't equal quality customer care. Felt more like rushing us in and out. We took leftover's with us so as not to waste the food, but decided to throw the box away based on the overall experience and lack of flavor. Also regarding food quality, iceberg lettuce and rough cut, flavorless diced tomato does not equal any type of Pico for tostada or taco topping. Invest in Romaine, chop according to texture and add real seasonings to rice, beans and proteins. Pretty sure my shrimp was under-done, so two were left on the plate. The chimichanga was overstuffed with dry, season-less chicken. I could not believe the amount of flavorless food on one plate. Seems like a waste. The only reason I'm giving one star is for the ambience. The decor is quite bright and I do love the Mexican colors, the chairs, wall paint and overall space is very fun and inviting. Extremely average & mediocre Mexican fare. We stopped in today for a late lunch. My wife ordered a shredded beef El Paso Chimichanga, I went with the Camarones al Mojo De Ajo. The wife started off with a margarita -- she told me it was pretty unremarkable. Meals came out after a short time. BIG plates, large portions & filling, but that's about all I can say. My Camarones al Mojo De Ajo was "sauteed in butter, garlic and spices"....mostly butter, that was the overwhelming flavor. Very disappointing. Service was very good though -- the waitstaff were all friendly & attentive. But we see no reason for a return visit to Rancho Viejo. A weak 3 Star rating. read more

Rancho Viejo is a nice spot, with smiling service. Located in a strip mall in Granby, it delivers good Mexican dishes. I had a chimichanga which was very good. So much on the plate. We also had fajitas with steak and chicken. The servers are always nice and smiling but there may be a bit of a language barrier. I am not a fan of sour cream and my dish had it, and my son asked for no tomatoes and just lettuce for fajitas, there are tomatoes under them (you may see in photo). Friday was busy, but our server came to our table 3 times, to take our order, to deliver the bill and to pick up the bill. We ran out of soda and wanted refills, but were not able. Frustrating. (Especially at $3.80 a glass). We had asked the gentleman who walked by for refills, he did not really understand the question, I believe. So yes, the food is authentic! I wish I could help by speaking a second language! The final annoyance of the night was the family with a young daughter who was performing a dance routine in the aisle. It might have been cute for the first minute, but with servers coming by with sizzling plates, or trays of drinks (not for my table!), maybe have your kid perform her routine at home. I'm not one to write negative reviews or critique service when a restaurant is busy, but my family and I had an incredibly disappointing experience here. The service was poor, the recovery was non-existent, and the food was outrageously overpriced. We ordered the fajitas for two, which came out with the same amount of meat as the fajitas for one that were served at the table next to us--just with more onions. This dish was $45. We also requested an extra side plate of toppings, expecting to be charged, but were shocked to see it cost $19 for rice and beans with fajita toppings. While I understand rising food costs, this was excessive. To make matters worse, our cheese sauce was served cold, and no one brought us utensils or napkins. We had to get up and find them ourselves. Despite these issues, the waiter found time to ask if we wanted dessert. When these concerns were brought to the manager when we got the bill, she said "you ate the food". Then she continued to argue with me over the price of rice and beans. She never offered an apology or a solution to the problem. Finally a bar tender came and excused her from the conversation. Customer service had to be begged for. The food quality was average at best, but the pricing, cold food, and lack of basic service made this a very frustrating experience. Having spent years in the restaurant industry, I understand the challenges, but this was unacceptable. For the price of a side of rice and beans and some fajita toppings ($19) I could have ordered a bowl of chipotle for a better price, higher quality, and less hassle. We won't be returning. read more

What a find! I was visiting the area and had looked for a place to eat in advance. I'm always looking for good Mexican food, and when I saw this place on Yelp I was sold. The restaurant is big, clean, fun, and the staff were friendly and efficient. I ate a huge basket of warm tortilla chips and a pint of house made salsa, then this huge platter of Rancho Enchiladas. The rice was perfect. My favorite enchilada was the cheese one with salsa verde, followed by the chicken in mole. The ground beef with salsa ranchera I didn't care for. The beans were good, but too watery. I had a tamarind aqua fresca, which was good. For the amount of good food I got, the prices were very fair. Very authentic tasting Mexican cuisine! They give you a large bowl of chips and salsa to start out which is always a win for me. There are many options on the menu. My mom and I went for lunch so we both got the lunch combo to try different things. I got the chimichanga with chicken and the burrito with beef. She got a chicken enchilada and a beef tostada. Both also came with rice and beans. The portions were very large and everything tasted delicious! The lunch combo is definitely the best deal, but other options on the menu seemed to be on the more expensive side. They seemed to be short on help today because there was only one waitress/host for the whole restaurant along with a waiter who was running food. Despite the two of them running the whole place, they were both very welcoming and attentive. I definitely recommend this place for a fun and authentic mexican meal! read more

This place. THIS PLACE. If you want authentic Mexican food with some fun drinks- you need to come here. I've been here twice in the last month because I'm so in love with it. The food is FRESH and great quality. My friend and I are actually going through the menu and checking off things we've eaten. We want to go through the whole menu eventually. My last visit here we ordered Taquitos with shredded beef. OH. MY. GOD- the beef melted in your mouth and it was full of amazing spices. I couldn't get enough of it. It was happy hour so we ordered some Ranchos Nachos with shredded beef and well frankly-- I devoured them. I think my friend only had like three bites? Whoops. I'd apologize but I'm not sorry- they were too amazing. I ordered the fajita quesadilla with chicken. While the chicken was fresh and it tasted great, it fell apart easily and I wasn't thrilled with that. Seemed like the chicken was cut too big so it weighed down the tortilla. For drinks so far, I've ordered the pina colada, margarita, mango margarita... I think that's it? I loved them all individually. My favorite was probably the pina colada- it tasted like you were laying on a warm beach with blue water in the distance. Pure heaven. OMG I FORGOT ABOUT THE CHURROS!! These are by far the most amazing churros I've ever tasted and I've gone to plenty of restaurants where they're served. The taste of these exceeds any churro out there. They're even amazing a day later and COLD. Do you know how rare that is? Most churros get solid and inedible a day after. Not these- I had three that I took home and let me tell you THEY WERE GONE THE NEXT DAY. So good. Order these. You won't be disappointed. I'll be back there soon. I was really excited when my coworker picked this place for lunch when we were working near by and must say that I was not pleasantly surprised. The service was great; friendly , timely and quick. The food wasn't as delightful. It was well presented and it looked delicious but it was lacking flavor. The complimentary chip and salsa was also a let down as I had to put salt and pepper to my salsa because it was really bland. I had the lunch combo #2 with pork tacos and side of beans and rice. Rancho Viejo is a decent Mexican restaurant in the Granby area. The food is good, the staff are friendly and the ambiance is fine. Most of the times that I have been here, the restaurant was decorated for some event/festival. I like the furniture in here, very colorful and traditional I'd assume; but looks cool. My visits have been during lunch time from work, this is the closest mexican restaurant in the Windsor area. The restaurant was fairly crowded. The food taste good and the portions are good as well. Had the Carne Asada lunch special the other day. I enjoyed the food very much. The thing is they put a large hot pepper on top of the broiled green onion, which did not looked cooked at all. I thought it was a pickled pepper so I bit off half of it to enjoy. When my mouth started burning I saw that the pepper had been put on the grill for a minute or so because the bottom was charred a bit. My thoughts are that if I was sitting in the restaurant they would never bring the uncooked pepper to the table, but because it was a to go meal they had no problem closing the cover and putting it in a bag. Will I go back, probably not because I already feel taken advantage of. Too bad, it was a nice little place. read more

Had an early dinner here this evening and I wasn't disappointed... But I wasn't impressed either. Plenty of wait staff and it wasn't busy yet we waited quite a while to have our order taken. Staff was friendly just not attentive. Chips and salsa- chips were warm and crunchy as they should be. Salsa had quite a kick to it that leaves your tongue on fire. Don't personally mind the spice but it was missing a flavor overall. Tortilla soup was almost good. Needed more cheese and better quality chicken. Enchiladas were average as was the rice. The Beans had an off taste in my opinion but my boyfriend didn't notice. All in all it was average Mexican cuisine but not somewhere worth stopping into again or going out of the way for. read more

I had a very nice meal and enjoyable experience here. It was a Thursday night dinner with a business colleague, and I was surprised at how many families and kids (all well behaved!) were here. Seriously, it seemed like 2 out of every three tables had kids. Anyway, we were immediately served warm and tasty chips and a carafe of salsa that you could pour into small individual bowls. This was a great idea, because it minimized the "bowl to mouth" distance that typically results in salsa splashes on the table. I ordered a shrimp diabla dish was simply put was excellent. Lots of perfectly plump shrimp in a fiery sauce with mushrooms. The beans and rice were very good too, this was a great dish for around $15. My associate ordered a combination plate that was as big as a manhole cover. Service was friendly and attentive with lots of "gracias amigos" thrown into the conversation. We had a great time. The complimentary chips and salsa were delicious, although the salsa only tasted spicy and lacked more of the tomato flavor. The chicken burrito asado was fairly decent. It was cheesy on top, had a good amount of meat inside, and was a large portion. The overly salty rice and beans downgraded the decent meal. Additionally, $16 for a burrito is overpriced and I've gotten burritos 10x better for around $10-$12. The carne asada was cooked perfectly. It wasn't too chewy or too hard. The grilled flavor was delicious. Of course, the only complaint again was that the rice and beans were overly salty. It was priced at around $17 which seemed reasonable. Sometimes the small shopping center storefront restaurants turn out to be the funky little find you've been looking for, and sometime not. I really wanted this to be one of those finds. Rancho Viejo has great reviews, but I was pretty disappointed. From the start, things did not look good: my margarita was served in a warm glass which, honestly just about gave me tennis elbow from its weight. That $12 margarita consisted of a lot of glass and not much margarita. The place itself is cute, welcoming and festively decorated. The meal was disappointing, generous portions, but lacking in true flavor. The salsa was watery, as were the refried beans. My Burrito De Puerco was to be cooked in " a tasty tomatillos sauce" but had little flavor., although there were generous chunks of pork. The other meals we ordered were of similar quality.
