Even before we got there was great. We were stuck in traffic and I called to inform them we would be arriving a little late. When I called, it went to voicemail so I hung up and tried to call back. But as I was calling back someone at the restaurant called me back because they noticed I called. That I think is unheard of and a great start. The wait staff was great. But my wife had ordered the pork chop. It came out raw. The fat was not even cooked. It was sent back and a manager brought it back out and stated she was sorry. The piece that was cut off was done. Nothing but praise for the menu at Casbah. We hadn't eaten at this Big Burrito restaurant for over a decade. I can't explain why, but a birthday club coupon helped entice us out to the East End for a special meal. We were initially seated in the first room (more of an atrium style setting) but the sun was directly in my husband's eyes, and after a little persuading, the hostess moved us into the clubbier paneled part of the restaurant. Service was great - you can tell when a server is a pro - and cocktails were spot on, especially my Aperol spritz. I indulged myself with the tuna tartare and the pappardelle and lobster. Finally get the chance to try this place! Appetizers - we get tuna tartare and charred octopus. Highly recommend tuna tartare, it's flavorful with the caviar and french crème, love it. The octopus is an okay, love it's tender texture but a lil salty to my taste. Pasta and Entrees - we love both pastas! The scallop and lobster ones are so good. The Long Island duck was a reco by the waiter, the dish had both the leg and chest part, i like the braised leg as it's richer in flavor, while the chest tasted relatively plain and was a little overcooked. So I would say, unless there is anything calling your name on the entree section, otherwise try more pasta options and skip the entree... My wife and I have been visiting this establishment for well over a decade. You name it: b-days, grad school festivities, favorite for out of town guests, or the random "I don't want to cook right now Tuesdays" when I used to live nearby and we didn't have kiddos. The latter doesn't happen anymore: we live in McCandless, but a visit is never out of the question. So, let's get to the thick of it (this is a fun review to write because this establishment is fantastic - read the whole thing or at least cut down to the end to what MADE my visit!). We ordered the calamari as usual (stellar, perfectly cooked - I've had so much "grubby" calamari elsewhere that they quickly reminded me what I should be expecting - in other words, they murdered every other calamari dish I've had since my last visit here). Sourdough bread and butter freebies were outstanding! My kids split an entree chicken (they will kindly do that for you and serve it on two plates (and even help you lie to your kids and say it's a full order:) )). I ordered the short rib ravioli - BOMB, as usual. My wife switched it up. She ordered a half red pepper caserrechia and invited in an Arugula Salad. I'm going to post a pic of the half order, because, it really worked out well. Often times she couldn't eat the full dish and took it home which is fine, but, let's be honest, seafood does not reheat well. Is what it is. Often times it spent 3 days in the fridge, then, "reheat" and "food safety" arguments resulted in...the garbage. Y'all know what I mean - we've all done it! So, what impressed me the most, is my 6 year old has visions of being a chef. I asked the maitre d if he could have a look at the kitchen. He kindly obliged for a quick peak from outside the doors, in which, the head chef and numerous other cooks said hello - it literally made my kiddos day, and mine. My little guy was in tears on the way home because I didn't take a picture of them for him. I had to explain that we couldn't "capture" any of their secret recipes. So, end of review: they have some of the best dishes in the 'Burgh, and also, offer some of the best human interactions, no matter your age. Classy business, from top to bottom. Quick Notes: behaved/quieter kids welcome - lets not ruin others experience - it's not inexpensive here (I was prepared to pull my kids, leave a credit card, and run). I went to Casbah last night for Festa di Pasta and was so excited for a spread of delicious food, and instead I left fairly underwhelmed. While the dishes looked lovely, most were under-seasoned and slightly overcooked, in my opinion. The best dish was the lasagne by far. The others were mostly bland, despite such interesting ingredients and potential. Beyond the food, the service was not the greatest, with us not being seated until almost 30 minutes after our reservation. Big thanks to the bartender who helped us get drinks while we waited, but there was minimal acknowledgement of the delay otherwise. I know I'll return to Casbah, as I've enjoyed better meals here in the past, but I can't help feeling let down by this one. read more

I came to Casbah with some friends after work. We really didn't know what to expect going in to it but we had such a great time! Our meal was split into courses and we really took our time with our food and weren't rushed. Our server was very knowledgeable about what was vegan and was willing to help me make something I'd like. All of the Mediterranean spreads were vegan and they were able to make me a vegan pasta. We got a reservation online so that wasn't the issue but we were originally sat at their semi-outdoor patio at first. I had an air vent directly over my table so I asked to move. They then moved us to the downstairs dining room. Unsure what was wrong with the entire first floor dining room directly at OPEN but was just happy to have a menu that wasn't flying in the wind. We started with the cheese plate. Omg they had this fig/mustard spread that I could bathe in. The cheeses were all delish and a nice combination. They all had a unique flavor but all went well with the spread and the prosciutto. They have small and large portions of pasta so we decided to do a small portion as an appetizer. We got the scallop red pepper casereccia. 2 scallops came with the small portion, 4 with the large. The scallops were seared and cooked to perfection. The pasta was also cooked to perfection, al dente, as homemade pasta should be. I was actually surprised that they cooked the pasta so well here but not at Alta Via, which is in the same restaurant group. I got the Long Island duck as my entree. Again, cooked to absolute perfection. The potato gnocchi underneath were pillowy goodness, a little browned and melt in your mouth. Sauce brought it all together. My husband got the pork chop and it was also very good. The risotto underneath was a nice touch and cooked well! I can't speak to much since I only had a bite but I'd definitely get it again! read more

Casbah has two ambiance offerings: a 'cozy cave-like' realm and an open 'courtyard' realm (enclosed with walls lined with exotic, tall plants and covered with a translucent roof). But these features cannot rival the deliciousness of the food. Nor do they exceed the staff's presentation to their customers! The sauces are simply to die for - including on the dessert of Dark Chocolate-Raspberry Bread Pudding! The noodles have a freshness to them that soaks in the slighty spicy sauce. The dish is filled with house-made tender fennel sausage, spinach, and crushed tomatoes. All is topped with ricotta cheese that pulls the whole dish together perfectly. You are definitely filled up with the full portion size too. In addition to you entree, you get a basket of fresh sour dough bread with sea salt butter and a cheese and olive oil mixture. Went here with my parents a month ago to celebrate closing on our house. Everything was delicious. We started off splitting the burrata, red pepper muhummara, and tuna tartare. The burrata is accompanied by apple mostarda, figs, autumn greens, prosciutto, pomegranate vinaigrette, and toasty bread. I appreciated the amount of bread provided - usually I feel like there isn't enough to eat with all parts of the dish. I'm working on it, but I'm not the biggest fan of prosciutto. This one though, I loved. It was very soft and buttery with a mild flavor. The red pepper muhummara was so good. I love the walnuts in it. The tuna tartare included shallots, celery leaves, Meyer lemon emulsion, caviar, crème fraiche, and grilled focaccia. This was amazing. Very nice tuna flavor which was elevated by the caviar. My partner and I split the arugula salad, which had house-made pancetta, crimini mushrooms, potatoes, goat cheese, and pancetta vinaigrette. The mushrooms and potatoes were great together with the arugula, and I always love goat cheese. For entree, I ordered the smaller portion of the fettuccini. This came with lobster, chanterelle mushrooms, zucchini, yellow squash, preserved lemon, and fine herbs. SO SO good. There were ample chunks of lobster, enough to eat with every bite. After much anticipation, I finally got to try Casbah last night. It was a Sunday, but I was able to easily make a reservation through Open Table for a group of 4. When we arrived, we were promptly seated. We started with wine and cocktails. I had the Wintery Mule and it was light and refreshing. For appetizers, we sampled all three Mediterranean spreads, tuna tartare, olives, and the butternut squash ravioli. The dips were fresh and delicious, the tuna tartare was fabulous, and the butternut squash was probably the best thing we ate all night! For main dishes, across the four of us we had crab cakes, duck, chicken, and the red pepper casereccia. We all really enjoyed our entrees. For dessert, we sampled the flourless chocolate cake, the creme brulee, and the ice cream sampler, along with a glass of port and champagne. It was a great way to end the evening. Our service was great, ambiance we nice, and all COVID guidelines were strictly enforced and followed. I have enjoyed Casbah for many years and have spent more than one special occasion dinner here. Recently, we saw they were running a limited time Corn and Tomato Festival menu, so we stopped in to try it. As usual, I love the covered patio. The lighting and plants give a cozier and more Mediterranean feel than the decor of the inside. Service started with warm sourdough bread, black pepper labneh, and salted butter - all delicious. Then, before starting the Corn and Tomato menu, we decided to try the cheese plate and Fettucine with lobster, chanterelles, corn, and snap peas. The cheese plate was good. We loved the quince paste and mostarda that accompanied the cheeses. There could have been a little more bread. They gave us sourdough because they were out of baguettes. The fettuccine was delicious. The lobster was in large chunks and perfectly cooked. I always love the sweet crunch of corn in pasta. It could have used just a little salt or parm to finish. Then the tasting menu started. First up was a tomato salad. This was delicious as well. The tomatoes were candied which added an almost southern flair to the flavor profile. We opted for the wine pairing as well. This came with a dry rose that was good on its own but we didn't feel necessarily paired well. Next was crab and corn arancini. We loved those as well, and the tomato aioli underneath them. This was paired with a sharp and fruity white wine that paired well with the crab. The main course was a roast half chicken with corn, tomato broth, and roasted potatoes. The chicken was very well cooked with crispy skin, and the side vegetables were good. I wish there was more tomato broth to dip the chicken in, I was only able to have a few bites before it was gone. This was paired with a Chardonnay that paired well but would have been perfect if it was just a touch less sharp and a tad more buttery. Finally, the Corn Ice Cream Sundae. I loved the corn ice cream and could have eaten a bowl of just that. The strawberry tomato cake that the ice cream sat atop was good, just a little dry. The caramel corn surrounding the dish was also delicious. The Riesling paired was this was far too sweet for our tastes. Service was good, only one or two moments spent waiting too long for an extra fork or waiting for the wine pairing to be served with its appropriate dish. All in all, I always look forward to coming back to Casbah. read more

Always a nice dinner here with the ambiance and service. The hostess stand is not in the front where you enter, so you have to walk through the dining area and meet them where is bar is. It is a wine bar so they have wine flights available if you want to try a variety. They do have seating downstairs, which is a very different vibe, similar to a wine cellar. The Duck entree is one of our favorites. Brunch is prix fixe on Sundays and you get a brunch cocktail, appetizer and entree for $35. Bread pudding is a favorite! It is made to order and takes about 15 or so minutes. About twice a year they have pasta fest for a week where you can try 10 or so different pastas that are not on the menu. Disappointing food for vegetarian. Waiter was great and professional. Food was mediocre. As appetizer, we ordered 3 different dips - baba ganoush, red pepper dips, and hummus with pita bread. The pita was awful - a thick piece of dense dough that was inedible. The red pepper dip was tasty; the baba ganoush was flavorless and had a dry/dense texture that looked nothing like baba ganoush. and the hummus was also favorless. For the entree, I ordered the tagliatelle with shitake mushrooms - dish came out nice and hot which was a positive; dish tasted OK - but pasta felt/tasted like an asian rice noodle - definitely was not pasta. And the mushrooms consisted of a a few pieces of finely shredded shitake - couldn't taste it and didn't provide any of the texture you look forward to with Shitake. Why would you shred shitake? Desserts were fine. So $170 later - we had substandard meal. Eleven, the sister restaurant definitely has better prepared dishes. read more

The bread served met the delicate balance of not too soft not too crispy, it was perfect. The bread rolls, however, were somewhat a hit-or-miss scenario, in which some rolls were just cold or hard and some that were warm, soft, and delicious. The Saffron Pappardelle with lobster was creamy, delicious, and rich. Big fan of the sun-dried tomatoes that complimented the dish, definitely worth the money. I also went to Casbah for an event in their private dining area, and the servers were all lovely, kind, and attentive. The panna cotta , adorned with a vibrant fruit coulis, strikes an exquisite balance between its luxuriant creamy sweetness and the bright, tart acidity of the fruit topping! I've been to Pittsburgh before and haven't been inside yet and finally did and it was way worth it! My goodness it was so delicious from the fresh OJ salads and pastas. We enjoyed it with everyone as a last meal before we sent some of our friends off to Arizona! A party of nine gathered to celebrate my dear friend's birthday a few weeks ago during the Spring Pasta festival featuring half portions of several pasta dishes along with their normal menu. Since our table wasn't ready when we arrived, we bellied up to the bar for some Happy Hour cocktails. The bartender made some terrific drinks! When our table was ready, the set up was sort of awkward with two huge round tables pushed together so the folks that were seated in the "crease" were sort of shorted on table space. The service seemed slow and timed so that two thirds of our party that did not order soup/salad or from the Spring Pasta tasting menu sat without anything in front of them for more than 30 minutes. It made us feel rushed and created a strange vibe. The stranger thing was that we had ordered the tasting menu options (two each) as our main course. I'm not sure why they waited so long to bring everyone else's food out. I had to ask our waiter what was taking so long and a short time later three people whisked dishes out to our table. Unfortunately, one friend ordered the pork chop and when he cut into it, it was totally raw. Ugh. He declined them reheating it which I can't say that I blame him but bring him some soup and salad on the house or a bowl of that pasta from the tasting menu. Do something extraordinary in this situation. I know they did offer to bring him something but really, just make it right after making him sit there for 30 minutes and watch three of us eat and then serving him raw pork? We were dropping serious change and this really tarnished the entire meal. The food we did get was very good. I've been a huge Casbah fan for decades so I'm hoping this was just an isolated blip.
