Great food every time I come! It's so nice to have a small, family owned business right next to my apartment. Whether I'm dining in or taking out, the service is always great. My daughter and I were traveling in the Gold Country and landed in this excellent restaurant at the end of the day. We were surprised and delighted at the quality of food in this out of the way place. The drinks arrived with thin crisp tortilla chips and homemade dark black dipping sauce that was unique to us and quite delicious. We both ordered the Chile verde enchiladas, with hand made corn tortillas, and topped with sour cream and guacamole. The presentation was lovely on a stark white square plate. The refried beans and rice were served in a thick oval casserole dish that kept them hot throughout the meal. The enchiladas were far and away the very best that I have ever had anywhere. My daughter said the margaritas were also exceptional. The waitress was attentive, friendly, and took the time to explain how the dishes were make. This place belongs in downtown San Francisco! Came here yesterday borderline hangry and ready to eat my own arm. Thankfully this was the first place we went and also also the only one open-lucky for us! Not only does this place have a lovely and quiet ambiance with a neat history, but the prices are great, and you can taste the love in each meal-its as authentic as anything I've ever tried. The business itself is a family affair: the boyfriend owns it, the girlfriend (the truly adorable and darling Shayna) serves the tables with a smile and provides fun conversation along the way, and Mom (the wonderful miss Maria) cooks the delicious home-cooked meals. I got the Hurache (with a super thick, fresh made corn tortilla, and tender juicy steak) and my friend got the Chille Relleno. It was the kind of experience not many restaurants can sincerely provide, and the kind you really only experience in a charming small town like Angels Camp. Local recommendations are definitely on target at Cascabel. We like to sample something different when we travel and here we tried the beer battered avocados with a bacon pepper dipping sauce. Excellent!!! The avocado was ripe, the batter light & crispy. The dipping sauce was so thick & creamy we spooned it onto the avocado slices. Yumm. The portions were generous & freshly prepared. The spicey shrimp plate was cooked in a interesting but not overly blend of spices. The chicken tacos had a generous portion of well seasoned meat. The shrimp fajitas, were beyond compare. Yum! Hurray for a great new restaurant in Angels Camp. We had to wait just a few minutes for a table (who would think that would be the case on a Monday evening in Angels Camp?), but were served chips and salsa and attended to quickly. (Salsas were really good - tasted homemade and not like other salsas that I have had) Service was friendly, a little slow but not exceedingly slow and understandable with only one waitress and one buser/helper on the floor. Three of us had Steak fajitas and a shared dish that I can't remember the name of (Chicken, Pork, Steak with cactus leaf and onions served in a sizzling stone bowl - recommend for 2). The portions were right, everything was cooked properly and very well flavored. Tres leches cake was fantastic! Extra bonus for us, a flautist and guitar player came in, walked the room while playing "Mexican / flamenco" themed music before having dinner themselves. It was fun, not an "in your face put money in my pocket" experience you will sometimes get from mariachis in Mexican restaurants. We are local and will happily be going back again! read more

I can barely give this place 1 star. The service was terrible, we had to go searching for utensils after our food had been served. The person who took our order seriously screwed all of our orders up. There were 5 of us and none of us got what we asked for. I ordered 2 enchiladas, one chicken, one cheese. I ended up getting god knows what kind of meat in BOTH enchiladas. I picked it out and just ate the tortillas. The flavor of the red sauce was terribly sweet and beans and rice were bland. We got there an hour and 15 mins before the movie started and we barely made it. The girl at the cash register couldn't even make the correct change. Nobody ever came over to offer us refills on our drinks or see if we needed anything. This place has a long way to go to get more than 1 star. read more

I am not a regular reviewer and only post when extremely impressed or extremely disappointed. Reason is that I believe good service should be the standard, also value for the money. I'll pay for great service and especially great food. As a local who has been to this restaurant several times, I now tend to order for pick up as I live close. So I won't go back now after waiting several months to give them another chance. 1- chicken tacos dinner was good and warm. 2- tamales dinner was no good. Ordered chicken tamales with red sauce and got lukewarm tamales that were just ok since there was almost no chicken filling and covered in green sauce. 3- the chili relleno was lukewarm as well plus I wanted rice and beans instead of cream potatoes or whatever that was, and got the potatoes anyway after explicitly asking for rice and beans To sum it up, I've offered feedback before when let down and no supervisor or owner ever cared to come address my concerns. Good luck with your restaurant, I won't be back or recommend. Feels like a waist of money when any food truck could do better quality for a better price. read more

So happy to see the new opening. Food was so amazing. Authentic sauces and flavors. We had enchiladas and the best chili relleno I ever had. The hacienda sauce was delicate and full of flavor. There was no heaviness to our meal. Chips and salsa were brought out right away. If you want it spicier just ask. they are very kid friendly with The non-spicy options. Pablo greeted us at our table and he is amazing, full of ambition and great ideas for the growth of the restaurant. We will definitely be coming back, bringing our friends and family. I have probably eaten more Mexican food in my life than most Mexicans. The past two businesses here served terrible gringo food (lousy tacos with sickening sweet mango salsa!!). My hopes were not high when I stopped in for lunch yesterday around 2PM, based on the previous experiences. Whoa, very friendly and cute waitress seated me. Three page menu. Place was packed even at 2PM. The waitress and the hispanic dood I assume to be the cook or the owner were hustling. I ordered a Jamaica to start with, and they brought me fresh, crisp chips that appeared to have been cooked (properly) in lard, just the right consistency. The waitress asked me what kind of salsa I wanted with the chips, and I said "hottest you've got". She brought back a small bowl of pale green salsa that had a really nice kick to it in addition to the nice taste. Good start, if they get the chips and salsa and drinks right, there is hope. Shortly she brought out the carnitas tacos plate I ordered. Three large soft tacos with the tortillas lightly cooked apparently on the same grill as the carnitas... perfect texture. The carnitas were crispy and juicy, and the tacos were simply sprinkled with chopped cilantro and chopped onion. Best tacos I have ever had! The taco platter was accompanied by a small dish of frijoles refritos with Mexican shredded cheese and some interestingly flavored white rice (tasted like it had garlic or onions in it, yummy!) The waitress saw me draining my Jamaica and asked me if I'd like another glass... how about that, refills on Jamaica! These folks are paying attention to what will make them successful. Great food, terrific attentive service. This is by far the best restaurant in Angels Camp, and the best Mexican food I have found in Calaveras county. I wish them great success! read more

Didn't know what to expect when we were looking for Mexican food in the small town of Angels Camp and were blown away by this cool little restaurant in the middle of a historic Main St foothills town. I had a feeling that this was the real deal when I spotted some authentic Mexican dishes on the menu like Pozole soup and chicken with mole sauce. I was looking for lighter fare and found it with fish tacos ala carte, the crispy battered fish was great as was my taco al pastor served with soft corn tortillas. They were larger than I expected and 3 tacos were plenty. Service was prompt and courteous. Prices were modest for both dinners and ala carte items. Complementary chips with wonderful salsas. Such a great surprise in the middle of the sleepy mining town of Angels Camp! All the recipes come from the grandparents who live in Central Mexico, so there is an interesting spin on flavors and options. Their fresh salsa is the BOMB! The fried avocado appetizer is so delicious for a splurge. Great chicken tamales ( we order them with red sauce instead of green sauce) and try the Molcajete! Spicy margaritas are DELICIOUS and Horchata too! We have loved everything we've tried there and always stop in when we are in the area! My family was looking for a Mexican Dinner place after our trek to the giant trees. This place had a good rating, so we wandered in. The service was great great, but the food was bland. First, the salsa that comes with the chips had a hint of roasted flavor, but it was also watered down, no spices. The spicy shrimp was ketchup with garlic, no spice, no heat and sweet. The mole verde was this tomatillo sauce that was bland. The food is not authentic, although the names of the plates are. The food is geared towards American not Mexican palates. This is a very good Place To eat especially considering the area. Normally I would not dare to eat Mexican food in a predominantly white neighborhood. However these owners have done A very good job of representing The Mexican ethnic flavors. There Salsa and chips were very good, flavors were there, however, there was no heat in their salsa. Still my family of 4 Enjoyed two baskets of chips and 2 bowls of salsa. I personally had their posole, the soup and flavor was amazing. We've been going to this spot since it was Sidewinders (loved it, miss it). Then it changed hands and was awful so we hadn't been back. Then it changed again to Cascabel. We were pretty leary to try it after how bad the last one was, but we were pleasantly surprised. The chilaquiles appetizer was soso...just sauce, cheese and sour cream. But the thing that redeemed the meal was the creamy potatoes! We'll go back just for a bowl of those! Delicious. Their chips and salsa are also good. Tried this for the first time a couple weeks ago. Great food and excellent service. The carnitas tacos are really tasty and reminiscent of authentic carnitas I had in Mexico. Going there again tonight for some late dining (8:30pm). Will update... Wow!! Had the Moljete (pronounced like MOLE HET-AYE) for the uninitiated. It's basically a piece of lava rock carved into a bowl with legs that they put the three meats in: chicken, pork, beefsteak, cactus, onion, and cheese. The lava bowl is heated in the oven to like 500 F and then they put the pre-cooked meats and veggies into it and bring it to your table. There are also a couple bowls of rice and beans (refrito autentico) and the salsa fresca. Do not ignore the au-jus in the bottom of the crucible. The choice of fresh-made flour or corn tortillas served hot will say everything about you. Most authentic Mexican and Latin American dishes are eaten with corn tortillas. Either way, you will be treated to fresh and homemade tortillas. Talk about a couples eating experience! Well done and keep up the great flavors! read more

Chile Relleno and a side of the creamiest potatoes with cheese and some green chili, YUM! Kids ordered a hamburger to share, and they were kind enough to cut it in half so my kids could share this bounty of a burger. The place a so full of flies we could hardly eat. The house margaritas were so sweet I couldn't drink it.
