Meatless Joe ========== If I only had 3 syllables in which to recommend Casey's it would be MEATLESS JOE. For years, I've gone to Casey's and always gotten something meaty-licious, rarely straying from the burger and always perfect fries. I never looked twice at the meatless joe. I have seen the error of my ways. First of all it's served over grilled cheddar-corn bread and how can you go wrong from there (udeon jamaica meat patty excepted)? I totally agree with Lauren L. this place does remind me of Sidetrack. Great onion rings and burgers for sure, kinda crowded, just a similar vibe. I wanted the fried artichoke hearts but James was not having it. We opted for the O-rings with our burgers. I was not too sad because the onions were uber tasty. My husband dipped his into some ranch, I stuck to the occasional dab of ketchup. My burger was on an onion roll with pepper jack, guac and grilled onions. James switched out for multigrain and had Tilamook cheddar and bacon. We equally enjoyed the juicy happiness. Really nice flavor, top notch burger overall. Pick your fave toppings and you will not go wrong. We will be back as the menu has much more to try. Going by what we had I am excited to explore more. read more

What can you say or add to a place like Casey's Tavern in A2? We had a basic burger with LTO, Bacon and Cheese and the Favorite (say Ruben with pastrami and smoked turkey) both served with Steak Fries. We started with an Onion Ring appetizer, which was more like the size of donuts and enjoyed them, and everything immensely! This was by far one of the best lunches we have ever had. Our waiter, Stephen, was funny, friendy and very helpful, especially for a couple of first timers. I don't know what these buildings were in the past, but once you step inside, Casey's transforms into a first class tavern/eatery which gets all 5 stars from me! And... I looove Casey's. It's a great lunch place or a good spot for a casual dinner and drinks. Across the street from the train station Casey's is a small place full of local flavor. It's a neighborhood place that primarily attracts townies; it's the Ann Arbor version of Cheers. Casey's is a pretty popular place and it's not very big, so it's likely you'll have to wait a few minutes for a table. Just put your name on the list with the host and snag a seat at the bar that stretches along the back of the restaurant. Hard wood floors and high ceilings can make Casey's on the noisier side, but most people don't seem to mind. The menu offers a variety of sandwiches, burgers, etc. They've got a couple vegetarian options, which you know I appreciate. My favorite is the "Meatless Joe" - it's their version of a sloppy joe. Lentils, kidney beans & tomatoes are cooked in a sloppy joe sauce & served over cornbread. Delish! And the portion is generous so I've always got enough for lunch the next day - bonus! Drinks are well made & everything at Casey's is pretty reasonably priced. Casey's doesn't stay open til 2am, so it's unfortunately not a place to grab late night drinks. Bonus: They went smoke-free a while ago so you can eat dinner, grab drinks and head home sans bar-hair. BOTTOM LINE: A great lunch spot or casual dinner destination. I have been driving by Casey's for quite some time and decided to try it out on a whim on a Wednesday evening. The place was rather empty, and we were sat in a comfortable booth with a good view of a TV showing a basketball game. Although the bar is small, the seating area is comfortable without the patrons being right on top of each other. Our waitress was very attentive and checked in often. The beers selection was good and the prices were mostly under five dollars, which I appreciated. I chose the Casey's Dip (French Dip), and my girlfriend selected a salmon sandwich they call the 'Salmwich.' My French Dip was very tasty, and combined with French fires was just the right amount of food. The 'Salmwich' was completely unimpressive, and although all the other ingredients on the sandwich were tasty and fresh, critically the salmon tasted canned. At $9.75 each, I thought both sandwiches were overpriced, yet the beer prices will bring me back to try their burgers. read more

This is my new happy place. I have been looking for a replacement happy place since I moved out of Austin. I never really understood the TV show "Cheers" until I came here. This is the first time I've ever been to a restaurant where I can imagine getting to know and love the staff, coming here every day and not getting tired of it, and spending hours at a time here because it's just as relaxing (if not more) than home. Sit at the bar. The bartenders are sweet, funny, real people like the other servers. And the bar itself is so comfy to lean against because of this indentation in the front that I have never seen before, but was obviously engineered to make it possible to sit comfortably (possibly even nap) for hours at the bar. It is also a great facilitator of sitting upright while partaking in their mind blowing Long Island Iced Teas (limit two per customer for good reason). This is the closest thing I've tasted to a "Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster". I'm gluten free, so it is crucial that their burger and fries must be delicious even without a bun, and they are. They are cooked perfectly as you order them. There are lots of toppings to choose from. The fries are crispy on the outside and molten deliciousness on the inside. And, consistently served by people I wish were family members of mine, because they are so sweet and pleasant. Dessert is a completely unique experience here. They don't list them on the menu, you have to ask. Their solution to the gluten free dessert question is the rice crispy Klondike Ice Cream bar, with. . . A GIGANTIC MOUNTAIN OF FRESH WHIPPED VANILLA CREAM, just for good measure. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the culture of a place humble enough to put a Klondike bar as an option for dessert, just because it is amazing. I love, love, love this place. read more

I enjoy going to Casey's, however, I don't like it that I only like a handful of things on their menu. I'll cut to the chase and say that the Casey's Dip (roast beef and au jus) sandwich is awesome, as well as the deep fried artichokes. The burger is decent, but definitely over-hyped (good if you crave it, but not if you are on the hunt for the best burgere ever). Everything else was unmemorable. It is a good place to just go and hang out. It is a non-smoking bar. It definitely has sports decor and screens to watch games on, but they definitely do not have the sound on during important games, not even closed captioning. It's a great laid back place if you're not a die-hard sports fan, want a decent sandwich, and want to put every condiment you could ever want on that sandwich. The rudest lady so far this year . Criticized Eastern Michigan's athletic department and said their football department is a waste of money. I said everybody deserves a dream and a place to study. As soon as I said that people work hard to become football players at Eastern she rolled her eyes and said what a joke. This lady then began slamming dishes behind the bar and treating me and my friend horribly. All of this because I stated in a joking fashion , that perhaps the professors should give up some pay . This lady is out of control. After friendly banter this lady turned into a crazy witch. Slamming the dishwasher shut and yelled at us while we watched a u tube video. She was twitching like a pill head and pacing back and forth. I know first hand good help is hard to find and she has worked here off and on . Once again, Casey's came through with exactly what you want and expect in a popular local tavern...a great cheeseburger, perfect steak fries and an icy cold IPA in a fun and casual atmosphere. This Saturday, more than a few Spartan fans were lunching here in this U of M-themed pub before going to the Crisler Center for today's interstate match-up on the hard court between Sparty and the Wolverines. Always a good time. Everyone already hit the nail on the head - Casey's is a cozy and comfortable place to hang out and enjoy some drinks and decent food with just about anyone. I'm more of a 'fair-weather' visitor as I hate walking in cold/snow if I have to park further away. I usually get the fish and chips. You can never (usually) go wrong with bar fish and chips! When I lived a little closer I'd generally run into someone I knew once I got there, but even living out of the area, it's still comfortable and familiar even filled with strangers. read more

During my first visit to Casey's, I determined it was the best burger in town. However, having visited a number of other local burger establishments, I have to say that Casey's is good, but not outstanding. At Casey's, you can choose three toppings with your burger (cheeses, guacamole, etc). Fries and a pickle spear come with the burger (or you can order without). I could have sworn that last time I was there, Casey's had pretzel rolls, but alas, this is not the case. The burgers are good, quite good, actually, but they aren't overwhelmingly fantastic. They are juicy, and cooked well, but they fall apart easily and I didn't think the flavor was overly special. The prices are extremely reasonable - especially for drinks - $6 for a glass of good wine...unheard of in some cities. I don't really care for onion rings, but I do have to admit that the onion rings at Casey's are good. It's good spot for a really casual dinner with solid food options. read more

Mmmmmm. It was a rainy day and so soup and sandwiches sounded really appealing to my friend and I. Broccoli cheddar soup is delicious!!! Steaming hot, completely warmed the belly and the soul. Got a turkey sandwich on an onion bun, which I DEVOURED. They served it piled high with sliced turkey. There were huge pieces of romaine lettuce on the side which were crispy and not wilted like some places. My sandwich also came with delicious fries. We left more than satisfied. Pretty good. I had never been and a college friend wanted to go. We each got a beef burger, I got mine with smoked mozzarella, pickles, and mushrooms, and it was pretty good. Came with steak fries which are not my fave but were okay. I would come here again. The burgers are a little expensive as compared to, say, Blimpy, but then again it's a different type of burger too. Possibly the least pretentious restaurant in Ann Arbor, at least compared to any within a stone's throw of downtown, especially any at which you can order adult beverages. The selection of those is good, with a few craft beers available on draft and many in bottles. There are some good whiskeys behind the bar too. We've been there a dozen or so times over the last ten years and almost always come away happy. Even though we're not vegetarians, we often order the vegetarian sloppy joe, which is basically a spicy lentil stew served over cornbread. Burgers are good, as is the "salmwich" and the reuben. I was less happy with a salmon salad I ordered a couple years ago-the fish was a bit rank and the vegetables were ready to be retired to compost. On our last visit, I very much enjoyed the shrimp-chicken caesar I ordered. Crispy lettuce, a wonderfully tangy dressing, and loaded with shrimp, to the point where the chicken was almost lost. My wife got the reuben, one of our old standbys, and liked it even though the slice of bread on the bottom had gotten a bit mushy--maybe the kitchen plated it before they started my salad. You can usually expect a short wait for a table around prime dinner hours, though we've never waited more than twenty minutes, and last Friday it was closer to five. Once you're seated you can count on quick, efficient service. Tucked away in bottoms of the Huron river, along the railroad tracks, this literally is the proverbial "hidden gem." read more

I was catching a train at the Amtrak station across the street so I decided to run in and grab a carry out to eat during the trip. I ordered a salad and a side of veggies. The vegetables were good but the salad was nasty. The lettuce was all brown and old. Not edible. It also took forever for them to throw it together. I started coming to this place with my then wife in 1987. We loved it so much for a while we came every Friday. In 1993 our daughter was born and we started bringing her there at 3 months. The staff is family and the bar is neighborhood and the city is Ann Arbor. Need I say more? She grew up there and we had many memorable experiences there. The loving and warm staff (actually not fair since we and they all knew each other by name and felt like family) shared many of our lasting family memories. My daughter is now grown and my wife is now ex but when we are in Ann Arbor one or the other of us always goes to Casey's. We remember good times and create new ones with our family. This is what a neighborhood pub should be. COVID shut things down for a while but now that they are opening back up I highly recommend that you try their excellent pub food (especially the h-burgers), enjoy the effecient and friendly wait staff, and start some family memories of your own. I'm so mad that I never went to Casey's back when I lived in the neighborhood. I finally went a few months ago and really liked it. I had a ridiculously awesome turkey burger with Tillamook cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and grilled onion. The turkey burger was tender and juicy. The only flaw was that the patty was a bit loose and started to fall apart, but I didn't care; it was so tasty. I liked that the burger came on an onion roll, and I really liked all the different topping choices. The fries were also really good. They have a ton of different condiments on each table, which is nice. Just an FYI, I was at Casey's in the dead of winter and sat at a booth by a very drafty window. As a result, I was really uncomfortable... until I warmed my stomach with my humongous turkey burger and fries. read more

Casey's is certainly a good neighborhood joint. Thought I've mostly been here during off-hours, I recently had occasion to stop in for a late dinner. Meat was calling my name, so I selected the pulled pork sandwich. As long as you know what to expect, its just fine. There's a lot of meat, so much that your bun will get soggy. The onion ring = delightful. They're really more like giant onion donuts! The pork sandwich, however, feels more like a pork sloppy joe. But it tastes good, and the service is friendly and funny, so it's a good experience overall. Next time I go, I'll try the meatless joe. If I'm really craving BBQ pork, I'll hit Sidetrack, but for convenience and friendliness, I'm sure I'll return to Casey's, particularly because the kitchen is open late! read more

God. I am such a jerk. I try to keep Casey's a secret from people... until I deem them worthy of biting into Ann Arbor's best burger (both beef and turkey are awesome). The french fries are also amazing. I really haven't tried anything else on the menu because I only go when I have a hankerin' for a burger. 4 p.m., Thursday...I polled my colleagues: where do you get really good fish & chips around here? The answer? Casey's. To confirm, I typed "fish & chips" into yelp....and up came Casey's! We had to park over the river and through the woods, but once we reoriented ourselves, it was actually a nice short walk (three cute dogs encountered between the tavern and the car!). The "small booths" are, well, small. Cute and cozy, but where the heck do you put your bag? And careful--you could knock your head into the back of the head of the person sitting behind you! We had to wait a bit for our server to make her way over to us, but it was fine, because she made eye contact, waved, and generally indicated she was trying to get to us, but swamped. I find it's generally the feeling of being forgotten, not the wait time itself, that grates. She enthusiastically affirmed my fish & chips order, which seemed like a good sign. And it was. They were gooooood, and fully satisfied the salt-vinegar-grease-cod craving that unexpectedly crept up on me this afternoon. I drowned the fish (can you drown a fish?) in the malt vinegar that was one of many sauces available at the table, and this was probably partially responsible for the fact that the breading was not quite as crispy crunchy as it could have been. But the fish was mild, firm, and tasty, and I liked that the pieces weren't too giant. Fish & chips is supposed to be finger food, right? So it's nice when you can actually lift the pieces with your fingers. SK enjoyed the Casey's dip and the Mucky Duck mustard...I didn't taste it, so can't offer detailed commentary, but his plate was clean. I would have to say that Casey's is the place I miss most from A2 (since the Del has been closed for years now and doesn't count). Even if you're not vegetarian, try the meatless joe. When I was little, my parents would go on 'dates' together every Friday night, and I would have a babysitter. All I can remember about those nights is the fact they went to Casey's Tavern EVERY SINGLE Friday. I mean, all the time, until I was a teenager and I think they overdid it a bit...lol. Now I'm 34 years old and I would have to say it's probably on my top 5 favorite restaurants. I can't even count how many times we have eaten here. First off, it's a fun Ann Arbor Icon, located right across from the train station with its "Cheer's-esque' sign welcoming you inside. It is a small little place which you walk up about 10-12 steps to get into. If you happen to be driving and parking instead of walking, there is a cute little parking lot in the back that you park in stalls from what the building used to be back in the day. But I must warn you, it's tight back there and there really is no way to turn around unless you find a spot, so you may have to Austin Powers it and go back and forth 1000 times before you've rotated your car, hahaha. You could also opt for parking on the street, which if you can parallel park is probably the best bet. Prepare to wait at least 15 minutes if you are going for dinner, and prepare to be in the way all the time while waiting. There really is no place to wait, they have these wooden bars to set a glass on while you wait, or you can go sit up at the bar. We've done it all, but lately, we just stand in the doorway and wait, along with everyone else. To me, just the price to pay for one of my faves. The atmosphere is very cozy, everything is wood, rustic and old. It has a great hometown bar feel. In fact, the owners have owned the bar for years and they are always there, working the bar, as the Host, they do everything. My parents knew them from going so much, and they are all so nice every time we go in. The menu is bar food, the burgers are amazing, that's what my Dad and Hubs always get, I think I got it once. My go-to, the item I crave and must get my fix of, is the Tuna Sandwich. Oh geez, my mouth is watering as I write this. I always order it the same, grilled, on pumpernickel bread, no cheese with fries. It's amazing tuna salad, every.single.time! The fries are thick cut, not wedges, ew. They are delicious with ketchup and they compliment the tuna or a burger wonderfully. Burgers and sandwiches always arrive in a basket, not a plate, just adding to the charm. And if you have leftovers, you take your food home in 'Chinese food boxes'. My hubs and I have tried other appetizers, like the Fried Artichoke Hearts, and those are pretty good too. They come with a mustard/mayo type sauce for dipping and it had a bit of a kick to it. We don't drink much, so I'm afraid I'm not much help in the Bar department, but from what it looks like there is a large selection of beer options. I did have a drink once, and I think I remember it being very strong. My Dad has always enjoyed their selection of beer. They are not open at all on Sundays so prepare your visit around that. It's always been a bummer for me, because a Sunday afternoon sandwich sounds wonderful on a summer day. The staff is very friendly and have all been there for a while, they know the menu, the food, everything. Casey's Tavern is someplace I tell people to try if they want one of a kind, Ann Arbor Spirit places. No one has ever told me they hated it. There's this older fellow who usually takes down your name (he was still there in April '07). Apparently, he's an Amy Winehouse fan. For me, Casey's is one of those places that you walk in and you just don't really like it. You don't know why exactly. But the sensation comes fast and hard ... and it's undeniable. There's nothing that bad about it, but there's also nothing that good. Yeah the food is fine, but the prices are more in line with an upper-to-mid level Ann Arbor restaurant, not a bar. The bar is actually ok, but then you look around and see families eating in quiet little Big Boy style booths. I'm all for places that try to do something new and distinguish themselves from the other local choices. But Casey's doesn't really do either. It kind of tries to have it both ways, like "hey, we're a kickass family-style restaurant-bar." I guess it's not really that bad, but I read some of the reviews here and I'm shocked and a little embarrassed for the Yelping community when people come in from other places and see Casey's as the top-rated nightlife spot, because it just isn't that cool. It's fine, but only if you live close by, and then only if you are bored of a good dozen other spots. read more

I come to Casey's at least once a month - it's a great place to bring a couple friends. I've been there for both lunch and dinner, and lunch is definitely a lot more easy going. Dinner's great too, it can just get a little crowded pretty quickly so plan for at least a ten minute wait. My favorite dish is the Meatless Joe - different kinds of beans and lentils served over a cheddar cornbread. The portion could quite frankly be described by most people as "legendary" but it heats up surprisingly well the next day. Save room for desert - they usually have a great selection and the deserts themselves are often simple but exquisite - which surprised me seeing as how you don't usually get that from a seemingly sportier establishment. Good food, good service, good price. Parking can sometimes be a problem, but even during peak hours I can usually get a spot on Depot next to Wheeler Park in between 4th and 5th Ave. read more

I'm so torn about this review. On the one hand, I want to give my favorite pub in A2 five stars for it's awesomeness (my wife and I share the same vocabulary apparently - that's me mentioned in Jennifer M's review), but on the other, I don't want any more people heading there and making the wait longer! Not that it isn't worth the wait of course. I would highly recommend the burgers (as she says, bacon, pepper jack, and guac make this California kid happy), the sandwiches, the fish and chips, and the hot dogs, but honestly, the food is not haute cuisine. I've been served cold, saltless fries before, my burger's been overdone, and my beer has been a bit stale. But that's OK! I come for the laid-back vibe, familiar waitstaff/bartenders and the nine-times-out-of-ten good food. Speaking as a townie, this sorta place is a much-needed oasis from student drama. read more
