Our first meal on our most recent trip to Minnesota: The Nook, promised by some as the best Juicy Lucys in the Twin Cities. We walked in for a pretty late dinner, slightly past 8PM and this place was still crowded. Ten minute wait for a table, the concierge said, but there were free seats at the bar either downstairs or up. We decided to walk down to the bowling alley (a fully functioning, retro alley might I add), and order at the bar. Nook Curds ($13.75) - It's a big basket of battered and fried cheese curds. There's bacon mixed in the batter, giving that smoky and salty, meaty element, and then drizzled honey for some very complementary sweetness. The batter is lightly crisp and the cheese curds inside are completely softened, to the point of being gooey and stretchy. Definitely no squeak here, but these were so delicious that I didn't particularly care. (5/5) Juicy Nookie Burger ($15.95) - Now that's a burger. Huge patty, completely filled with a large pocket of hot, melty, gooey, stretchy American cheese that gushes out while biting through the patty. It's decadent and rich, and that patty - charred so well, giving a robustly smoky charred flavor along with a strong natural beefiness, a result of the patty only being cooked until medium pink. Somehow even with so much cheese stuffed inside, it doesn't leak out at all. It's a pretty simple burger, with just that patty, three pickle rounds on the side, and a bun. The bun is buttered and barely toasted, just enough to give a hint of toastiness and hold up to the massive patty. It cradles the beef like a baby and sucks up all the patty juices and cheese. The burger comes with fresh homemade fries, fried heavily until dark brown, making them similar in both look and taste to my secret craving for Better Made Rainbow Chips, which has a heavily caramelized almost slightly burnt flavor. And yet somehow they aren't over fried in terms of texture. The outside isn't super crisp like commercial battered fries, instead the clear homemade nature leaves some softer areas interspersed with the crunch. The insides, of course, are still perfectly fluffy, and there are little crumbs spread out all along the bottom for an extra crunch. These fries are the height of deliciousness. (5/5) Yes, I've been missing this kind of fatty, unctuous, filling, greasy, rich food after moving away from the Midwest to Seattle. You simply can't get this kind of food anywhere in the PNW. This had been on our bucket list for a while - glad we finally went! It was PACKED on a Friday night, with quite a wait for a table, but we decided to go play score-your-own bowling on the ancient lanes downstairs while we waited. If you don't wanna wait, you can sit at the bar downstairs - or even put an order in at the bar and eat at the lanes. We ended up getting seated in the basement, which I highly recommend! The food was classic - great wings, great fries, great ranch, and awesome Jucy Lucy burgers. The ambiance here is top notch, especially in the basement. Very solid bar food, and though service is stretched a bit thin still a great experience. Bring cash for a soft serve cone after!! read more

Hungry after pacing through the environs of the Sculpture Garden, and running out of time to have a "juicy lucy" while in town, I consulted my saved locations and up came the Nook. Though Google warned me of a fight to find street parking, we navigated the "full size" Jetta rental car, windshield wipers randomly expressing themselves, to find that a curb spot was open directly in front of the entrance. Kismet. Narrow dining hall all a-bustle, bar on the left side, we were given a table in the nook (wow) right under Guy Fieri's big noggin' advising us that the "Nook is off da hook." He was right. The menu and kids menu had a lot to offer. Kid 1 got a lil burger with a Five Guys serving of house-made fries (= a lot). Kid 2 was delighted to find that soup of the day was tomato basil to pair with a grilled cheese sandwich, served on tasty sourdough bread. Kid 3 (me) was delighted by the "#7 burger", which I will have you know is Joe Mauer's new favorite. In addition to the obligatory stuffed patty, it came topped with lettuce, tomato, bacon, smoked cheddar, and chipotle mayo. For an appetizer, I was excited to find that I was offered a last chance to eat Walleye (fried "fingers" style) before returning to the "Almost No Walleye Ever State" aka California. The batter was perfect, the fish was succulent with big hunky flakes--delicious. Then came the show. The burger was impressive in its appearance and demeanor. I was warned to give it some time to rest, lest I suffer a cheese explosion on first bite. I was fine with it, thanks to the Walleye and the perfectly crispy waffle-cut fries served with my burger. Then came the time, and it was glorious. The unctuous spillage of melty cheez combining with the robust and well-seasoned beef patty, the crisp edges of bacon, and the freshness offset of the veggies, well it was a time I had that evening and that's best left between me and myself. Except I am going to share a video, unflattering close-ups of my face and food-chunk-hosting upper lip thanks to kid 1's cinematography notwithstanding. Check it out. And by all means, go to the Nook. Oh, also, our server was magnificent, kind, and made my kids happy, so made me happy. I do not recall her name. But she knows who she is. Hip burger joint with a bowling alley! The whole place is an experience. We got seated downstairs, and there are dollar bills plastered all over the walls and ceiling. Very unique concept. I wish I knew about this earlier so I could have decorated my own dollar bill and taped it to the restaurant. So if you plan to visit, plan ahead! I got the original juicy lucy burger, and my spouse got the Molitor burger. Fun fact, I found out that Paul Molitor went to the high school right across the street from The Nook! Both of the burgers were delicious and lived up to the juicy name. The burger comes with fries, which were pretty tasty, too. The downstairs has a couple of tables, but it is on the smaller side. We were able to get a table. I did see that people after us had to wait, and you can watch people bowl while you wait, which is pretty neat. The service is a bit on the slower side, but our server was also the bartender, so I understand they did not have a lot of staff available. Holy Jucy Lucy, this place is promising you an absolute gem of a time. To skip the long wait, I went to the defaced-dollar-covered bar downstairs with a bowling alley that screams "make a memory here". I'm not really the expert on Jucy Lucys but damn was this the place to get them at. Lovely people that treat you like a friend, great beer, and a burger that... for lack of a better term... EXPLODES cheese in your mouth. It was getting to a point where I tried to dissect the patty to see how could they fit that much cheese in there. What really blew me away was the new item: DILL PICKLE CHEESE CURDS. DO NOT SKIP ON THIS! Although it will last about .5 seconds on the table, it will make you remember it for weeks afterwards. The bar feel hear is very fun. They had stuff from all over with sports, high school photos and many more. I always love a good personality to a place. Although, spacing was a smidge tight, you didn't really feel it once you settled in. Our server was kind and very attentive. We asked a few questions, and they were kind about it. We ended up with dry rub wings, hot cheese curds, and splitting a Homet burger. The burger is what you'd expect, meat between donut halfs, I probably wouldn't get it again. Best Juicy Lucy in Minnesota! We went with a group of four on a Friday night around 6 and only waited about 20 minutes for a table. While we waited, we checked out the bowling downstairs and grabbed a drink at the lower bar, which made the time fly by. All of us ordered the Joe Maur Juicy Lucy with fries and it was so good. She did check on us to ensure we had everything we needed and refilled our waters. On a quest to find the best juicy Lucy in the twin cities, many people recommended this place. Unfortunately this was a very average/below average place for that... There is free street parking, but be careful! About 10 cars go ticketed for parking in the bike lane while we were there! It is safest to park in the surrounding neighborhoods. The wait was about 40 minutes at peak dinner time, so we just sat in the car until it was time. They do take your phone number and contact you when your table is ready. Our server was nice and checked In throughout the dining experience, despite it being so busy! So did a great job! The vibes here are very "hole in the wall" "been around the block" and felt like a slice of history in this area. With it being so busy, try to be respectful and plan no more that 60-70mins here. Not a good place to be a squatter. The food: We got the buffalo wings since they stayed they were award winning. This is a crispy wings and juicy inside and a mild buffalo taste. This is not a saucy wing. It was tasty. The ranch and blue cheese were also tasty with it. The Harris buckin bronco burger was very good! We would happily get that again!! The best of the best is at the Nook. I had frequented this dive many times for lunch during the day and just went on a Sunday night. The place was hoppin but we were seated within 5 minutes (table for 5). The nook curds (maple glaze and bacon) is unmatched. The service is perfect - friendly and attentive. Sat in the basement on New Year's Day for lunch, perfect cozy spot on a freezing MN day! I've heard great things about The Nook, so my dad and I went there on 11/21/25 around 6pm. The wait was surprisingly fast given it was a Friday night, plus several games were going on their TVs. The service was great, and the food came out in a good amount of time. We ordered the "leprechaun legs" (aka fried green beans, $12) and the Nook curds (drizzled in honey, $13.25). They were both pretty expensive, but made good appetizers. Though, the honey + curds wasn't for me. We both ordered juicy Lucy's, I got the #7 names for Joe Mauer's fav burger which rang up to $17. Now this was a feast. While the fries were under-seasoned, you got so much food. This is not a white-shirt meal, the cheese and sauce will get everywhere. But good burgers come at a sacrifice. How do you describe the nook? It really is a Saint Paul institution. It's a place I've been going to since college, though I won't say how long ago that was. I remember going to The Nook a few years back and thinking they had some really good juicy lucy's. Nowadays, I love a good value meal and the happy hour does not disappoint. And there was still some leftover to take to go. The sliders are scrumptious. The patty itself is on the thin side but still very flavorful. The buns are buttery and soft, and the slider goes down without being too meat heavy. The fries are cripsy and seasoned, maybe a touch too salty if I had to criticize. And the nook curds are a classic: sweet, crispy, and has that nice snap in the curd when you bite through it. Eating all of this will definitely put you in the mood for a nap later. As one descends the stairs with posters for local events and vintage beer brands, a mix of music, talking, and bowling welcomes them. This is where you'll find the second bar with locals enjoying a meal and whatever game is on. When we were there, the place was full but not too loud, yes even with the mini bowling alley right next to our table. If you're gluten-free there really is nothing here for you, unless you want chicken (wings or breast) or a burger without a bun. That being said, the chicken skewers (chicken breast on a stick) we pretty good though a bit pricey in my eyes. My friend had the wings and we shared fries for the table, as they were not included with either of our meals. I did not know when the menu said "all of our burgers are cooked medium" that I still needed to verbalize that I did not want a raw burger. I was very disappointed with the inside of the burger, especially after waiting so long for it to come out. I can handle a little pink, but this was quite raw. I waited for the server to come around and check on us before mentioning that my burger was quite red and asking if they'd make me a new one. The fresh cut fries were great, too! When all is said and done, I think I liked the Nook the best out of the 3 burger places I went to. They had the friendliest customers/staff, and the burger and fries were delicious! The ambiance is fun, you can watch people bowl and they have TV's going with whatever sports team is on. The basement is a little hot, not much airflow. I've come to The Nook twice now in the last two weeks, that's just how good the food is. When walking inside the restaurant, the upstairs has a unique dining feel, but the really cool part is downstairs where there's a bowling alley and a fun sitting area. I've tried two kinds of cheese curds on the menu, the hot honey and the spicy Cajun, and they're both really good. I've also had two of the burgers so far, the triple decker and the Guy Fieri special. This place also claims they invented the Juicy Lucy, though that's something a lot of spots in Minnesota say. As far as what to order, I actually recommend sticking with the regular burgers instead of the cheese stuffed ones. They can be a bit tricky to eat, and the cheese can either be super hot or just lukewarm. The regular burgers have a lot of unique flavors and are definitely worth trying. The staff is really nice and gave us great recommendations both times I visited. I plan on going again to check out the Wednesday and Thursday specials, and I still want to come back to try bowling. This place always hits the spot. May not be home to the original Jucy Lucys, but it is second to none! We've been coming here for years and were thrilled to bring some European friends over. Don't be deceived by the "divey" look, it just has a lot of character! We always go for the Spanish Fly (which mixes chorizo with the patty), and our friends went we a traditional Juicy Lucy. The fries are always meaty and well seasoned, and the burger has the perfect balance of flavor, juiciness, and ooziness from the cheese. We brought our friends from out of town to try a Juicy Lucy at our favorite spot for them. We gave a bit of a disclaimer that although it's kind of a dive bar, the food is spot on. That sentiment rang true today. We had the Spanish fly while our friends had the standard Juicy Lucy. As usual, the fries were meaty and well seasoned, the ranch was flavorful, and the burger packed a punch. How can you beat a stuffed burger made of beef and chorizo? (You can't IMO). If you get a stuffed burger, BE CAREFUL! They will be hot - although the cheese may ooze, you'll save your mouth from burning. Parking is street only. If you sit downstairs, it will be near the bowling alley portion. read more
