Castello is a family-owned restaurant that has been around for over 20 years and can be considered one of the "OG" Italian restaurants in the Woodbridge/ Vaughan area. Not only is it a restaurant serving lunch and dinner, but it also has the space to host private events- wedding reception, birthday parties, company events, etc! They also offer catering services for your next private party. We had a reservation on a Thursday evening for a nice dinner at around 7pm. The interior was classy with chandeliers and a huge flower centerpiece, but kept it warm, with intimate lighting. They weren't too busy in the dining area as only a few tables were occupied, contrary to the big event they had going on on the mezzanine floor. We were greeted by the lovely restaurant manager, Kevin, who brought us to our table which was tucked at the back corner of the dining area. Here's what we ordered and what we thought of them... DRINK: - Verbena Blues Lemonade: the original version was a vodka-lemonade cocktail, but my boss requested it non-alcoholic and they were able to accommodate her request. The colour of the drink was a beautiful azure that reminded you of the ocean water. (I didn't get to taste it as it's my boss's drink... but she finished the whole drink so I assumed it was good enough?) FOOD: - Cozze Marinara (PEI mussels in tomato sauce): well-cooked mussels... in a pool of seasoned tomato sauce. The only slight issue was the amount of crushed shell pieces inside the mussels was a little much. - Beet Arugula: the dish's name says itself... essentially an arugula salad with beet chunks, sprinkled with feta cheese and crushed pistachio. The dressing was said to be "berry vinaigrette", but it tasted more like olive oil to us. It was a refreshing dish to balance out all the salt. - Rigatoni Profumo De Bosco (mushroom rigatoni pasta with rose sauce): the pasta was al dente so it still had a bounce in every bite, the sauce though... it was a tad bit too salty for our palate, as the dish already came with prosciutto (small tiny bits and pieces of it) which was salty in itself, together with the salt in the sauce, it was overpowering. - Scaloppini Al Limone (veal with veggie): it was my first time having veal and possibly going to be my last. The texture of the veal was dry and a bit tough to cut into. It had the texture of a thin pork cutlet rather than the tenderness of red meat (maybe I am wrong?) DESSERT: - Tiramisu: it's almost a MUST ORDER whenever I dine at an Italian restaurant. The ladyfinger part was moist without being too soggy, and the mascarpone layer wasn't enough to give the overall bite a more rich, and velvety texture. This was our third time at Castello, we even had my husbands 80th Birthday Party there and it was amazing, the food and the service was great. But when we went for a New Years Eve Dinner, it was a little disappointing. We were seated right away, great, waited about 15 minutes for someone to ask us about drinks but he came rushed and his words were fast and he looked like he was in a hurry, I was taken aback. We ordered our meal, starting with the charcuterie board, Did not feel is was worth the price, $38.00 for about 4 pieces of thick sliced prosciutto, fat and all, 2 pieces of bread, 4 pieces of tiny parmigiana some salami, olives and pickled eggplant, that was it, one tiny cheese selection, no spreads, not enough bread, we had to ask for more. I would not order this again. Our meal was very good but minimal and my husbands veal was a bit tough. All in all we had a good evening, the restaurant was not full and not that busy, it was loud but they had large parties so that was to be expected and It's New Years Eve so again, expected. Another thing, when I looked at the Website to see if the menu was different for the night a saw a special for that night for $150.00 per person, champagne included so we decided to go, I then realized that once they called to confirm my reservation and then looking at the website again that the ad was from 2019 but still up on their site, my bad I guess for not looking at the date but should it really still be up? My wife and I were guests at an early dinner for a group of 20 people. While all of us were there on time, we were left waiting for a disgusting 55 minutes before we were seated because the place was overbooked. It was very infuriating to be left standing in the foyer and made our hosts extremely embarrassed to have been put in such an undesirable situation. They came out with a pizza snack after about 45 minutes that we had been waiting in order to appease us but that could not erase the bad reputation that the restaurant had made for itself by that time. Also, no senior person was around to whom we could complain and the staff didn't appear to really know what was going on. To make matters worse, many of the staff spent a long time setting up tables for a large group in an area close to where we were supposed to be and that area remained empty for a very long time which made us wonder if something could have been done in order to accommodate us. When we finally sat down, the food followed quickly and it was generally good. My filet mignon was cooked to perfection and the servers were efficient and courteous. I arrived 8pm and immediately gave my waiter my appetizers. 30 mins later the waiter states he didn't put in my appetizer as I needed to put in my entree with it all at once. I did not like this kind of pressure as a restaurant experience and to also see other sitters who came in after me not being told to put in their entrees at the same time of their appetizers. We had a reservation arrived at on time @ 8:15, we told to wait and didn't get seated until 8:40. Then we ordered a bottle of wine and after bringing the bottle our server was MIA. We didn't even get water for the table. Once she finally arrived to take our order about 20mins after seating she was gone again for another 20 mins. We didn't get any bread for the table until just before the apps arrived and I had to waved down another waiter for some water. Our server returns with our tiny jug of water and says they ran out of pizza dough ... at an Italian place during 50% capacity restrictions. Just didn't make sense. Apart from the constant wait for every little thing, and having to ask for basic things like water refills, and fresh cutlery after courses, the server kept trying to upsell us items. Just came across a little rude since the service for standard items was falling below par. Finally, at the end of dinner she was offering us dessert, when we had brought a birthday cake with us... the bill was being paid and were all waiting for the cake we brought. So I had to type it in my phone and asked her where the cake was. Her eyes widen and she scurried away to bring the cake. Returns with the cake and some coworkers to sing HBD - the effort there was noted but still the service can across as super unorganized Overall, the food items alone were good 7/10, but not worth the sad level of service and constant waiting. Location is just a local family restaurant style-like within a small plaza. We were seated at a 2 person table in a dark corner even we made reservation for our table of 3. When the restaurant got busier, our table is basically ignored. We had to chase after them for food or dessert that came late. There were flies were we were eating too... Just had dinner here on a groupon and should have had my friend check first before buying it. Very slow service. Appetizer was calamari with spicy shrimp cocktail sauce from our of the jar not spicy tomatoe sauce. Veal was nice but meal was cold. We asked to sub pasta side for veggies they said no and surcharge $7.95. Pasta was over cooked. Bread was extremely hard but my company was great! That was the highlight of my meal! This place does more catering and events than its operations as a restaurant. I've been to an event there and had a good time. You typically accept a lower standard of food, when being served in a large group. There is a a smaller front area in the front which is designated for the day to day restaurant. Problem is the food in the restaurant is on par with the event catered food. Don't order the mussels, they are overcooked and not fresh. We got a seafood linguine special. The seafood was not fresh and had a chewy texture. The veal chop was cooked properly and fairly tasty. read more

Disappointing experience and service. We booked a large family event, and the restaurant wasn't ready we were charged for a welcome cocktail for our guests and it wasn't there (however we were still charged in full), no vendors are permitted so we had to order the cake through the venue and there was no cake, one of the servers showed up at the end of the meal with a random small cake they had gone out to purchase and denied it until one of the other staff let it slip and told us (we were still charged almost $300 for the cake), not to mention it was too small for our event, stale and didn't match our event at all. Our guests were there for over an hour before anyone appeared and took any drink orders. At our salad course, it was served to our table undressed, and the salad was slimey, wilted and watery (no one at any of the tables could eat it). There wasn't any management staff present that day and the staff working there didn't know what to do at all. Upon leaving we went to pay the bill and were forced to pay a $900 tip and the person who took our payment didn't even acknowledge the disappointing performance. The restaurant has done nothing to make this right, we were so excited for this event and this restaurant is over-priced, service was so poor and I was ashamed in front of my family. read more

I wanted to share my experience as I had high expectations of this place, but I was let down by Castello staff. I had been looking for a venue to hold my friends babyshower and came upon this place. It was beautiful, the food was good, price was good and I was looking forward to bring everyone together. Mary whom I spoke to was also very pleasant. I put a deposit down a few weeks prior to the event to hold the spot, which at the time was the party room and I was anticipating 20 ppl. Fast forward to the week of the event. I had called everyday from Sunday to Thursday and left a voicemail as I wanted to confirm attendees and clarify a few things regarding food preferences and games. I did not receive a call until friday, at which point I was left a voicemail while at work. Not even 15 min apart she called again to confirm leaving the same voicemail. So I return the call, at which point I am told I can no longer have the party room as they have a bigger group booked and I had a few cancellations ( 15 incl. Children) I was a little disappointed, but I understood the reasoning. The female on the phone seemed rude (josie or Joanne)and abrupt when I inquired about games and one of my games were cancelled as a result of being a safety issue. This also I was disappointed, but saw it from a liability standpoint. Coming to the day of the event, this is where our group was very let down. We had the time booked from 12-4. We set up our decorations and only had 1 table to work with, so we requested to have another one for gifts. They were kind enough to accommodate this. My guests arrived and we started eating around 1230. Everything was fine, up until another large group started coming into the same area we were. It was 3 pm at this time and we were in the midst of having cake and opening presents. This is when I felt we were thought of as unworthy guests, as one of the staff literally threw our gifts onto where the cake was and took the table away. When I confronted her, she said well you didn't need that table anyway. I told her our gifts were on that table. She then said, oh well I can put it back up if you like. First of all, you already took and down and your asking after. What's the point.?? To add to this this same staff member was going to charge me adult price on an infant. She even went back to confirm with another staff member. During this time some of the staff were trying to clean our table and rush us out by removing things from our table including guests thank you gifts. It seemed the group who came in around 3 had overbooked and now the staff wanted us to leave. As a group we felt disrespected and as if we were not worthy of the service as a another larger party had showed up. Sorry for making you read this if you get this far....but I felt my experience might help if you decide to book a group here. Make sure its a big group because it seems this staff place does not put their priority in service just profit. First off, food is okay. Not great, just average but does not justify the high prices. Problems with this place: super slow service and deceptive practices. I'll explain the slow service first. Seated, 10 min later, waitress comes with a menu and disappears, 10 minutes, order we order drinks, comes back 7 min later with the drinks and then takes order. Appetizer comes in reasonable time of 8 minutes, however, main entrees took 20 min. We asked for parmigiana and pepper for the pasta dishes - she came with the cheese and left...she never came back with the pepper and we couldn't find her. After clearing dishes 15 min AFTER we finished, we asked for a dessert menu. She came 10 min later with a menu, but by that time, our hunger for dessert was gone. Asked for the check and had to wait another 10 min. She just left us there with the machine and didn't come back. Just a big waste of time. Now the deception: waitress asked if we wanted water. We said just plain regular water. She came back with one of those glass bottles that restaurants seem to use now to fill with water so they don't have to make repeat visits. We had asked for refills as well. When we got the bill it was $14...for regular water. Pro-tip: ask for water from the tap. Now I know why the staff was hard to find, they know they would be questioned about this. I was so tired of waiting so much I just paid and vowed never to go back. read more

Asked for oil/balsamico gor table it came after 15 minutes, bread was finished never replenished. Ordered desserts and presentation out of kitchen lovely, server didnt bring any cutlery. waited another 10minutes for spoon for tartufo. Received largest tablespoon on earth. Lets just get cheque and go; She won't accept our $100 bill. She cant be sure its real. This my friends is why Swiss Chalet does so well in Woodbridge. Upon walking in, I was surprised at how nice the restaurant was, given it was in such a random location. We came for our friends' birthday and it looked like a restaurant that catered mostly to hosting events. What I didn't expect that our party already has a pre-set menu to order from, so I was definitely disappointed right off the bat because I wanted to try their pasta with mushrooms and truffle. Ended up ordering their rib eye for $37 and my fiancé ordered veal parm with penne a la vodka for $28. The birthday girl ordered appetizers for the table which included a deli platter and calamari. Calamari was ok. Deli platter is... a deli platter lol. Once the food came they seemed so disorganized. I would say there was about a 10 minute gap until everyone finally got their food. My steak was definitely not worth the $37, it didn't taste like it was grilled at all--although it had grill marks. Definitely tasted pan fried (like with a pan that has grill marks). My husbands veal parm and pasta looked ok. The pasta was good though. Since it was a group event, they included a mandatory tip. Fine. But your servers seem to like to try to hint at you to include more (ie. "are you going to bypass the tip?"). Overall, I don't think we will be coming back again (unless of course we have another event). Oh! Their washrooms were nice though! But women's bathroom was such bad placement! I have been to this restaurant about 5 times, it's hit or miss- I find when you go and they are not busy like midweek you get amazing service/food/portions for the value on menu. But I have been 2 times when it was super busy and service was slow, food portions were very small for cost of menu- I still will return as the taste is there! just I will pick midweek slower times- the last a visited they renovated and it looks much more inviting read more

I will never book with this restaurant ever again. I booked a month in advance for a birthday dinner I organized for my friend. We had a party of 11 and they confirmed they could host us on Friday night. Everyone was existed and some were travelling from far to be here. 45 mins before the reservation time, the host calls and tells me they can't seat us at 7.45pm but at 8.45pm. I was upset because the restaurant closes at 10 pm, which doesn't give us enough time to order, eat and enjoy. I was so upset that they called last minute, and that we booked a month ahead. Yet they over booked apparently and didn't even call us at least a day before to say that. I told the host we were going to come for 8pm latest. She spoke with her manager and they confirmed. We made our way there and the host lied and told us actually they can't even host us it will be around 9pm if they manage to get us in. Wasted my time when they could have just told us they couldn't host us at all. My friends birthday was ruined because this restaurant. We were looking forward to eating here but I won't be back. The host is rude and disrespectful. Not able to host large parties. I planned this a month ago. That gave them plenty of time to notify me, but they decided to tell me last min. Unfortunately, this place was not as prestige as the online images represent it to be. The interior was beautiful! But that's about it. Service was slow and horrible. Beginning with our over priced drinks, my friend ordered a Berry Mojito which they claimed they couldn't make since they didn't have any mint. Yet, our sangaria's were supposed to come with mint as well, and of course lacked that. They were clearly watered down and the "fruit assortment" consisted only of a citrus array of 1 orange, lemon & lime. Our waiter was not aware of their menu details. We ordered the charcuterie board which came very bare & minimal, they also completely forgot the cheese.. when we asked the waiter, he said he wasn't sure and had to check the menu. 15 minutes later, while already eating our mains, he came back with a small bowl of shaved cheese- which we declined since our appetizer was already taken from the table. Then while eating our mains, my friends order of ossobucco featured a nice piece of hair... I split my main with her & asked for the bills which did not even come with any complimentary items to compensate the unfortunate dinner. Before paying, we asked to be compensated for something- which they initially refused, then they finally agreed to remove my friends hairy ossobucco. This restaurant was recommended through a FB group as a great location for an event and it didn't disappoint! The venue was beautiful (seemed newly renovated), and the food was incredible. The presentation, the flavour, everything was well executed. The antipasto with grilled veggies meats and cheeses were presented on charcuterie boards, the pasta, meat, potatoes and vegetables were served to each diners' plate, and we had family style salad and fruit plates. The owners and serving staff were easy to work with and addressed all questions and concerns, which made for a seamless event. I highly recommend this location for a function. read more

Absolutely disgusting & unwelcoming. I was there for a family religious party with a guestlist of approx. 30 people. From the beginning of the night I knew I was not going to be impressed. There was about 3 other parties going on when we entered. Our party was seated; mingling and talking, without ONE single waitress taking orders for what we would like to drink. I'm not saying that I am too lazy to get up and get my own drink, but I am at a restaurant and it only makes sense to for a waitress to take orders. Regardless, I went up to order a drink to a "bartender" who most definitely had no schooling/experience on making drinks. I had asked for a vodka with Cranberry and OJ, she literally filled the cup with a shot of vodka and rest was all Cranberry. When I had asked that I wanted OJ she only put a drop of juice and stated that she only wanted to put a little so it "looked nice". Anyways, onto the Antipasto... Our table was plated with a mix of grilled veggies, cheese, proscuito, and olives but another waitress came to pick it up and place it on another table within seconds. Seriously? I do not know where they went to school, but putting a plate on one table and then taking it away and putting it on a another table isn't very professional, mind you we did receive another plate within a couple of minutes. The next course was two types of pasta. One lady came around giving a good portion of the red sauce pasta, but the other lady who came around with the white sauce pasta only put 8 little gnocchi's on our plate. The host had to tell the waitress that she had paid for both pastas and that there should be more than enough on everyone's plate. I guess it didn't really matter how much pasta we had on our plate, it tasted like nothing anyways. (note; the lady serving the white sauce pasta got sauce all over my camera that was on the table, when I saw it I said "oh shoots" and picked up my camera to clean it, she just looked at me and walked away. Not even a sorry!) I have never gone to a restaurant and had to put SALT AND PEPPER on my food. My sister had asked another server for some more bread for our table, the server actually replied with "how many should I bring out?". Last time I checked a little bun only costs about 30 cents each. My sister had then ask her to just bring out a basket for the table. Which should've been self explanatory. The menu was set for all the adults to have lemon sorbet and the kids to have ice cream, the boy that the party was held for wanted lemon sorbet. My mother had asked our waitress for another sorbet, and she actually HESITATED, and said that they would have to see if that was okay. Seriously? Here someone is paying ALL this money and you can't even accommodate them? Are you ready for the worst part? On my way out, my mother and I saw the "bartender" smell the pitcher of coke, grab a funnel, and funnel it into a container. I should have snapped a picture and sent it to health and safety. That pitcher SHOULD have been tossed down the sink! I am so disgusted that a restaurant charging a big amount of money for a set menu would "save the coke" for the next people. I am even shocked that she did that in front of people. I am beyond disgusted. There are plenty of other restaurants in the city that have GOOD food and friendlier staff! I will never ever return, and I will make sure to pass on my thoughts about this restaurant to everyone I know. This restaurant is designed to hold different functions going on all at once. I wish I could give this place zero stars. Absolutely the worst garbage Italian food I have ever tasted. Came here with a big group of people and all everyone could talk about was how bad the food is. Vegetables are obviously frozen and not fresh. Chicken looked as white as paper and was rubbery and disgusting. Sauce on the chicken was lemony and tangy as hell. Desert wasn't awful but was not fresh. I was surprised to see that there are so many bad reviews for Castello, I love this place!! Been here for lunch more than a few times while I'm in the area and haven't had a bad experience yet. Love the food, love the staff. I usually try to come on Tuesdays for their $9.99 pizza special (I come from Scarborough and the drive is absolutely worth it). The last time I came they had an in-house special Lasagna that wasn't advertised and was recommended by the server, I was afraid it would be too heavy for lunch but it was delightfully light, made with very thin pasta and in a word - delicious. The lighting is perfect here for intimate gatherings, and the decor is beautiful. Would absolutely recommend. read more

The food was okay. The service was less than zero. If a restaurant is putting groupon's, vouchers and other promotional items out there its to bring in business. So when these same people bring these vouchers to try out a new place its probably a good idea to make a good impression. At Castello, as soon as they know you have a voucher, you are treaded poorly, mostly ignored, and a more than generous tip to the awful server is automatically added. I visited October '13, but forgot to write a review...I give it 3.5 stars I went using a groupon offer and really enjoyed the food. You could tell they used quality ingredients and presentation was good. The decor/atmosphere inside is nice, but it is unfortunate that they are located in a plaza. It really doesn't suit this restaurant and I would think that it affects business growth. I would definitely go again though. read more

We attended with group of about 25 people. We PREORDERED our meals ahead of time so I would have thought everything should be ready and served properly. Our reservation was for 6:30 and everyone in the party had arrived and was seated by 7:15pm. It took a while for the bead to arrive, followed by the salads. Then there was a HUGE lull, and our main courses was not served until 9:10pm! We had one server for our table who we scarcely saw. She was not dressed as a server should be for this kind of restaurant, she had a plaid shirt on. I didn't even know she was a server until someone informed me! Upon leaving we had to go pay at the bar, they didn't even bring our cheques to the table. Our bill was just shy of $200 as we ordered some drinks and a bottle of wine for the table. I came here last night for the first time as my friend and I both got $25 vouchers from attending the bridal show! It wasn't too busy .. our reservation was at 7:30pm and there were a few parties there when I had arrived. Food was authentic Italian. It was also my birthday so my friend surprised me with balloons, cupcakes, and gifts! The place was really nice - lots of amazing photos wer taken! The food was delicious. We started off with bruschetta which came in 4 pieces for $7!! What a steal!! I couldn't stop eating them I ate 3 out of the 4 LOL. For entree I got the gnocchi which was a three cheese gnocchi and omg it was delicious and extremely filling. The gnocchi was cooked just perfectly and t had bits of prosciutto in it which added to the texture as it was crunchy. My friend got a seafood plate in tomato pesto sauce (I forget what it's called) and I haven't tried it any but my friend said it was amazing. She could not stop raving about it. It was filled with pure seafood - clams, crab legs, etc. (I don't really eat seafood). My friend doesn't really finish her plate most of the time we go out but this time she cleaned it!! Anyway, the food was delicious ... but the best part I really liked about this place was their service and the people that worked there/owners. They were amazing!! Mary and Olympia were their names. And must I say.. Olympia is amazing at taking photos!! She also has an amazing sense of humour lol. And Mary was great too!! We had actual conversations and got to know her a bit about her family and life!! It's places with people likes these that show they really care about their customers!! This family-run restaurant, one of the largest in Woodbridge, is multi-functional, and reflects the cuisine and style of Carnello (near Rome). Better than a home-cooked meal, dining here is about the quality and the flavour more than any fancy presentation. The menu reads, "there is no love more sincere than the love of food." Homemade pasta in tomato basil sauce, and rigatoni with porcini mushrooms, prociutto and tomato sauce, are simple delicious plates of pasta. "Did you enjoy your pasta?" we're asked. We nod an obvious "yes" in appreciation. Panko crusted truffle infused risotto balls with tomato and fresh herbs are a decadent mouthful, while the the veal chop, marinated in Amarone and drizzled in rosemary sauce, is hearty and flavourful succulence. A plate of crisp fennel is offered to cleanse the palate. Its the pure ingredients and the love in their preparation that makes all the difference here. read more

Nice place, great ambiance and service, fair prices, mediocre food. It definitely felt like a cozy, family-owned restaurant where you can have/host events and feel welcome so that part of the dining experience was very lovely. But the food was a disappointment. Bruschetta was too salty. Pizza was just not up to par which is hard to believe because it's really hard to mess up Italian food. read more

I do not recommend this restaurant at all. The service was extremely poor and slow and the host table was not even served first for the 2nd course. They asked for 18% gratuity which is what you would expect for a fine-dine restaurant and neither the restaurant nor staff come close to that. We had the entire back section, however, they closed it off and jammed 38 people in a tight space, the lighting was bad, their "antipasto grande" is FAR from grande and the serving dishes were heavy and did not come with a proper spoon/fork to pick up the various items. They are in the process of renovating the restaurant but they have a long way to go...their chairs are 1970 style!! I was EXTREMELY disappointed in this restaurant and will never go back. read more

This is our new favorite restaurant! We had the diavlo pizza...perfectly made...crispy with a delicious spiciness. They also have a wonderful home made spicy oil that is the best! This is a family run restaurant and they make you feel at home. We look forward to their live music Friday and Saturday nights. Service couldn't be better! Very accommodating. If it's not on the menu they say just ask and they will make it! Great place! read more

Overpriced even with Groupon voucher. We were first dinner of the evening arriving late for our reservation by 30 minutes ended up leaving 7:40pm for slightly over 2 hrs dinning. We ordered 2 fettuccine cremosa and one penne Alla vodka and calamari fritti. For dessert we had futarto and teramisou and ginger ale and ice tea. Bill was over $108 before voucher. Taxes and tip was $50. But our server had issue with our Groupon voucher and lost what we gave her earlier. My son like the penne with rosa sauce though I thought it was a bit too al dente. We enjoyed the dessert more than appetizer and entrée. Over all disappointed so we won't give it another try. There was one fly bothering us too for such a fine dinning environment truly disappointing. BTW voucher cost us $39 which should cover one appetizer and two entrée and one dessert but when they were punching it in their system credit was $32/entree but the entrée we ordered was $22/dish so it cause a huge confusion. I just wanted to pay and leave as my kids were sleepy. Not very fun at all. read more
