I have used this company for several years. We burn about 1/2 cord a year. They deliver a full cord of Almond wood, and will dump it where you direct. In our case, 1/3 in one location, 2/3 in another. We did the stacking, so we did not have to hit the gym for a few days! The wood is dry and well seasoned. We have been ordering firewood from Castillo's Firewood for well over twenty years. We usually order three chords each year, at least for most years. For most recent years the quality of the firewood has been less than acceptable. Always, some pieces of wood have been just rotten wood not even worth burning. It is also true that many pieces of the wood is often dirty, but my main concern is the shortage in the chord size. This year was very bad. I have always stacked my own wood. One chord of wood should be 128 cubic feet. Three chords should be 384 cubic feet. After stacking the three chords this year I measured the stack and calculated only 276 cubic feet. 108 cubic feet less than it should be which is a 28 per cent shortage. That is even with giving the benefit of the doubt for all measurements. Often, and especially this year, the individual pieces of firewood are not even close to 16" long. Many are less than 12" long. When stacked, including the way Castillo stacks it in their trucks a 12" long or less piece takes up the same space as a 16" long piece. Many pieces are just big "junks" which take up space in a stack, more so than a "16" log". I noticed when delivered this year that the stacks did not even seem to reach the level of the top of the wire sides of the truck. After many years of ordering firewood I could easily see when it was dumped in my driveway that it was probably a short load and commented on it to the truck driver who of course assured me it was three chords. Whatever the reason, sloppy stacking, short cut wood, short stacks, etc. My measurements are easy to make and the load delivered is short 108 cubic feet. Their loads have always been short 15 % or so, but 28 % is ridiculous. It is not possible I stack wood 28 % better than they do. It seems to have to be deliberate. To always be short is deliberate. I originally started buying from Castillo because the price quoted was just less than other suppliers. In spite of the shortages and other flaws over the years I have not been checking prices. I will do so from now on and give consideration to the deterioration in quality of wood provided and most especially the size of the chord provided. Just can't trust people anymore for quality of service. Just can't get lazy and let poor service slide. Be wary of Castillo Firewood. I hope this helps others. I called Castillo about the shortage and of course the receptionist just said she would tell Mr. Castillo. I told them they could come measure the stack themselves. Easy to do! Absolutely no response to my complaint. Probably another big warning sign to consider when considering where to order your firewood. Probably a long time ex customer!!! read more

Ordering was easy. Wood was very dry. Price was excellent. It was $100 less for a cord of Almond wood than any other place that delivers in my area. Delivery was included in the price. If you want the wood stacked, the invoice states that you can pay the driver $50 (separately) and he'll do the dirty work for you. I sort of wish I had gone that route as it took me all day to stack the wood. :| If I had one complaint, it would be that the wood was a fairly dirty and sandy. I could see some people getting upset by this, but for me it wasn't really an issue. Just throwing it in the fireplace anyway. Will definitely being ordering again next year around June or July. We just got another cord. We've been getting excellent seasoned almond from them for 13 years now. Always a good price, on time delivery, and dropped right where I want it. I haven't had them stack yet, should have done it this time but I didn't think of it. I've seen comments about the wood being dirty. I've worked in almond orchards in the past; both knocking almonds, and cutting trees for firewood. They are extremely dirty trees, it is almost impossible to get even most of the dirt off of them - so the dirt goes into the fireplace with the wood. I have found almond to be the best burning of the 6 or 8 kinds of wood I've used. It works well as a large or small fire and produces less ash than most other woods. read more

Now that summer is winding down, you may be considering purchasing firewood for the winter. I must persuade you to NOT order from Castillo's. We used to order regularly from them. Then we realized that we were not getting a complete cord. After 3 such incomplete orders we called the Department of Weights and Measures. They came to our home and measured the wood we had received. They informed us that we were shorted 1/4 of a cord. I believe Castillo's was cited. We were told by Weights and Measures that they could not force Castillo's to make good on our shorted order- so they didn't! If you order from them, do so at your own risk and BE SURE YOU ARE AWARE OF THE MEASUREMENTS OF A CORD- The cord is a unit of measure of dry volume used to measure firewood and pulpwood in the ... feet (122 cm) high, 8 feet (244 cm) long, and 4 feet (122 cm) deep; or any other arrangement of linear measurements that yields the same volume. It would be worth it to pay them to stack the wood in cord fashion in order to be sure. However, they are unethical and do not return calls and there are plenty of places to get firewood from. WARNING WARNING PLEASE READ! I am on a crusade, I finally had enough money this year for firewood other than the grocery store. WARNING WARNING please don't buy from CASTILLOS!!!! I have tried several times to get this wood to burn in my fire place, my son even tried at his condo THE WOOD DOESNT BURN!!' I had to call 911 to get the wood out if my house because it was filled with smoke! I thought my house was going to burn down. Several phone calls to them about the wood. I was yelled at, told that I must not know how to lite a fire that I'm doing something wrong and hung up on! After the third attempt of scheduling an appointment them telling me that they would come out and try to start the wood and bring a check and take the wood back if it doesn't light, they never showed. I tried to speak to the owner about their treated wet wood and was always told they were out of town. I have no problem getting a nice roaring fire in less then 10 minutes with the wood from ace hardware but I can not get castillos wood to burn. It smoldered and fills my house with smoke. Fire starters don't even get this wood going. I was shamed disrespected and treated like dirt over and over by Carolina and the other office staff. I'm an honest Christian woman that just wanted them to stand by their product they sell and have an ounce of customer service. I will never ever buy wood from them what a disgrace of cliental and customer service. $190 dollars gone right at Christmas time too!
