Fresh pastries, tons of freshly sliced meat, produce. A small restaurant in the back. The have beer too.

a close up of a tamales

Tamales here are terrible they are super dry and the meat is so hard and it just tastes horrible , almost as they've been sitting there for days . Los tamiles aquí saben horrible , están secos y duros y tienen sabor a quemado la carne está dura y la masa esta súper grasosa hasta parece que estuvieran ahí por días, y no se diga de la señora que te atiende , muy mal todo.

This place is known for their bakery, its located right next to what used to be Albertsons but now is like another version of a Saars. Anyway... This mexican tienda has all the main necessities you might need for cooking up a mexican dinner. Hojas de maiz, fresh veggies, juices, sodas, drink mixes, beans, fresh baked goods, fresh baked flan, canned goods, pinatas, a tiny little restaurant inside, all sorts of cuts of mexican meat. NOTE: I think the precut taco de Carne Asada meat here is cut better than Guadalupes which is down the street. Also their prices on meat are fairly reasonable too. I just bought shrimp with head on for $5.49 a lb and these were pretty good sized too! ons of calling cards along the wall, medicines, bathroom necessities, etc. I go here very often to get what my hubby needs for his mexican cravings. Staff is friendly and always nice. Pretty okay priced for the area too. But if you want some good flan come here and get some, its yummy fresh and good! They also just FINALLY added a auto sliding entrance, THANK GOD! so helpful especially when I bring my son with me!

Love the selection of dried peppers, and the classic Mexican pastries. Great little shop with friendly cashiers.

Expect the unexpected when you are here. Plastic tablecloth on rolls - yes! Tamale steaming pots that double as seafood steaming pot - yes! Clothing, costume jewelry - all yes! My elderly Filipino in-laws would have loved this crazy place. It's like a dirty Fred Meyer that is catered to SE Asians, Mexicans, and more. While I might not recommend this place to anyone, they have their charms to treasure hunt and prices tend to be low. If anything looks questionable, it is. I don't buy any of the seafood. The meat is a maybe if you live nearby. The produce is mixed, too. Gai-lan (Chinese broccoli) in a bag looked suspicious; they were. I still make mistakes with what I buy here. Meanwhile, a box of honey mangoes is better looking than any others I have seen - BIG and approaching ripeness. They were superb. The deep-fried SE Asian treat from a mold that looks like a lotus flower (called Khanom Dok Bua in Lao or Khanom Dok Jok in Thai) is a surprising winner. I didn't die. They were good. LOL. Look thoroughly before buying. They have their gems and plenty of don't-bother goods. Look for best-by dates. They are not on top of such details. The staff is friendly-ish, if they aren't pre-occupied with friends. Otherwise, you don't exist until you pay.

When we arrived, we were told by a kind and energetic female employee that they didn't do that and they only have prepared tamales. She did let us know that there is a Mexican restaurant on the other end that had rice and beans and we thanked her then left. The store itself was very clean and there was plenty of space to browse around but it is a bit cramped. The meats here looked very fresh and the prices were very fair too! I was thinking that we should probably get some snacks and decided to pick up tortilla chips, fresh made guac, and 1/2lb of chicharron which ended up being $20.20 and that seemed like such a great deal especially with how much chicharron we got and it was so delicious! My brother told me that chicharron is usually eaten with guac and their guac here was fantastic both with the chicharron, chips and on its own. My boyfriend wants to come back to get more options, he saw that they did a specific specialty for a good price and wants to try that out.

La Canasta is a great all around Mercado for every thing you need for home cooked tacos or burritos. They do not sell liquor, so for Mexican cervesa you'll have another stop. They also have an in-house restaurant with dine-in, take out, and delivery that is very good. The best thing that La Canasta does is their chorizo seco!! I have tried all of the local varieties from here to there, and La Canasta makes the best! I recommend grilling (be careful as it is oily and will flare up) and then crumbling on tacos, burritos, breakfast burritos, etc. I also will prepare a bunch in advance and freeze, so I can pull out for quick reheat. Overall, La Canasta is a delightful Mercado for authentic Mexican/Latin food!
