I need to rave on the service. I've been to Castle Hill during peak and off seasons, and I have no complaints. However, my review is stemming from the service Ingrid gave me. Ingrid was FANTASTIC. I have a shellfish allergy, and while Castle Hill, despite very obviously being known for their incredible marine menu, has always accommodated me, never in my life have I felt so well taken care of in terms of allergies. Ingrid asked questions, checked in on any shared dish, and was the right kind of attentive. Being in hospitality my whole life, this is the kind of work ethic and care you reward. Another name to mention is Carly. We came on her first day just this week and she was extremely attentive and eager. She was up for the challenge (serving my family, lol) and was incredible. Castle Hill is not only an institution, but a Mecca of great hospitality. So happy with the people here every time I come. read more

Went to the pop up event at the Bohlin. Was thrilled that Castle Hill carried on despite the tragedy of the fire. The Bohlin is an impressive location and I was glad to experience an event there. Was not at all impressed with the service, ever, especially for a special event venue catering largely to weddings where service is everything. To be clear, it was a brunch buffet, not a sit down meal. That said, it was Mother's Day. Tables were set beautifully. Server brought us water, nothing else. If we wanted a cocktail, we had to stand at the bar and get it ourselves. Coffee after lunch? Ditto. Brunches have multiple courses. We should have been given clean cutlery in exchange for the removal of a plate instead of being forced to lay dirty cutlery on a clean ivory tablecloth and then reuse them, again and again. That part was a total turnoff and not encouraging for anyone considering it as a future event venue. The food offering was varied and generally a success. The bacon was delicious and good quality. The frittata bites were a good and elegant option to the usual chafing dish full of scrambled eggs. Kudos to the chef for the beef sirloin although at $95 a head, one might have expected a carving station over sliced beef steaks piled into a chafing dish that just dried out the beef over time. The accompanying horseradish cream was quite good. Everyone seemed to really love the raw bar and raclette station. The desserts were well curated , not just slabs of sweets on the table. The pasta dishes? Meh. The cacio e pepe was nothing more than a runny version of the mac and cheese from the kids table with some pancetta or proscuitto specks in it. Fairly tasteless. Location was wonderful but at that likely price point for a private event, I thought the experience was mediocre. Looking forward to going back to Castle Hill instead. read more

This is a lovely place to celebrate and have a date night. We have only tried the "Lawn at Castle Hill" which is their outdoor patio. It's pricey- but quality food and service and an incredible view and ambiance. We enjoyed the acoustic singer for background music and thoroughly enjoyed a quintessential New England summer evening. I enjoyed the lobster roll and my husband loved his steak (and appreciated the care for his gluten allergy). Our only critique was the crudités and dip trio. The dips were lovely but veggies were disappointing and bottom of the box gluten free crackers (all cracked and even had the "do not eat" absorbing packet still in there). Recommend skipping that appetizer, but everything else was great. read more

Enjoyed a lovely evening at the Lawn Terrace at Castle Hill Inn. The view was spectacular and the food was great. You can't beat the ambiance at this place. It's 5 + star. Enjoyed the crab dip appetizer which was very good, though we were hoping for the special appetizer of Mexican corn dip and chips. Unfortunately the server said they were out of it. The chips that accompanied the crab dip are homemade & excellent. We were then surprised with the special appetizer of corn dip and tortilla chips which were excellent and also homemade. For the entree we all had the fish tacos which were excellent and was accompanied with grilled corn on the cob. Totally recommend if you enjoy fish. The dessert was a fruit cobbler and again spot on. Loved the homemade short biscuit . Our server was the best. Friendly and attentive. Everyone was great. Newport Restaurant Group definitely trains their staff well and all were friendly. Absolutely magical. I came here for a clam bake with my coworkers. This was truly a magical experience and the best meal I have ever had with my company. We rolled in via trolleys to be greeted with multiple drink options. I started off with the rose which because my drink of the night. There were strolling appetizers which included tuna tartare and lamb lollipops (my favorites)! After drinks, I strolled down to the water to watch the sailboats, enjoy the sunset, and learn about the clam bake process. After the food finished baking and the employees shared the history, our clams, lobsters, and more were taken to the dining area. The dining area was incredible. Opened air tent with views of the ocean. In addition to this incredible venue, we had live music too. Dinner was served buffet style with clams, lobsters, potatoes, clam fritters, chowder, Boston baked beans, and more. I can't believe everyone got a lobster!! They were pre-cut which made it so much easier. After dinner, there was a dessert bar with homemade apple pie. This venue was perfect. Great for a wedding, party, or work event. Castle Hill Inn is GORGEOUS! The hotel is also beautiful, and the help from the valet and the hotel staff was amazing. The restaurant itself was good, not great. I got the classic blueberry cocktail that I had been hearing about: it was refreshing but nothing special. We got a salad to split, which had some delicious marinated beets. The favorite part of the meal was actually the roasted corn. It had a little kick to it which was delicious. The fish tacos and burger were pretty good, nothing too special write home about. The service was great the entire time. However, there were DOZENS of bees. It was super difficult to enjoy lunch with them constantly swarming food and drink. Honestly, it kinda ruined the experience. I hope they find a way to control that. read more

For such a picturesque venue, we had higher expectations on quality control. The drinks tasted like watered-down juice, but that could be easily overlooked if not for the rude bartender. I ordered 2 drinks at the bar and before I could touch them, the garnish on one fell off. I politely asked for another garnish and the bartender proceeded to pick up the lemon that was on the table, and placed it into my drink. I asked for a new drink as that wasn't hygienic. He left me waiting while making other drinks then remade my drink hastily and without care and stated "no garnish". I politely said I'd like the garnish it's supposed to come with (need it for the pics!) and he gave me a wedge instead of a slice. Great view, poor food quality except for chowder. Don't get fries with the burger, tastes like cardboard, not fresh. Beer was $10. Ok, G&T $16, but burger with cardboard fries $30. Ouch. I told them no truffle sauce, cook did it anyway, told them no mustard, brought a mustard dip anyway. But worse is the noise at the bar with servers ( not bartenders) slinging plates and glasses and silverware as they cleaned places, huge noise, never taught to PLACE into containers. Our favorite place in Newport! We love coming here for lunch or sunset and dinner. This trip we stopped by for lunch and were seated in the front room on a beautiful day! It was restaurant week, but we chose the regular menu items today. Grilled cheese with butternut squash soup was good. We all prefer a sweeter profile for soup like apple/ginger/cardamom type flavors vs spicy with cumin... Chicken salad with fries was solid. My salad with lobster salad was absolutely delicious! Desserts were very good. Nice selection with different flavors. Service was very friendly, although a bit slow today! The actually hotel is very cool, historic and feels elegant. I did not have a reservation, but I was able to grab one of the last spots at the Terrace Bar. The bar is open air and an awesome place to grab food. My server got me a menu immediately and I ordered a glass of white wine and a lobster roll on gluten-free bread. My food came out quickly and it was good! You are definitely paying a premium for the views and I wouldn't say this place is exactly budget friendly. After lunch I ordered one more glass of wine and enjoyed it on "the lawn" which had tons of Adirondack chairs facing the ocean. This is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon! read more

Update: Although I haven't been able to dialog with Lou, I do appreciate the response. In fact, there is an issue with IT, wait staff training. I discovered that we were charged correctly for cost if drinks + 20% tip. The confusion came from the total about shown to us before we chose which tip amount we wanted to give. Our 3 drinks came to $60 but we were presented with a total of $72. Even though we thought that was steep, even for Castle Hill, we automatically chose 20% tip. Afterwards, we checked the price of our drinks. That's when we got annoyed. Naturally we assumed our 20% tip choice was on the total presented to us ($72). Confusing, unnecessary -yes, but happy to know it's a glitch in the system and not intentional. Either way it didn't stop us from having a delicious meal at the Mansion Bar afterwards. No issues with that bill so it must be a Lawn thing. *********** Let people know 20% tip is included! At the Lawn for afternoon drinks. Waitress checks us out with a handheld machine. It gives us the choice of 20%, 15% etc for tip. Of course we chose 20% but since we were not given the itemized bill, only the total amount, we had no way of knowing the tip was already included. If you want to feel special come to Castle Hill Inn. This is our 8th year coming to this gem and now it just feels like home when we step in... I might have protested a little bit after the price bump but I couldn't stay away for too long. Walking into the restaurant I felt so welcomed. Carl was our server tonight and he was on his A game as always. He really knows the menu inside and out. I'm pretty sure he practices on the delivery of the menu at home. He's a man that takes his job seriously. He has worked at Castle Hill Inn for 2 decades! If you get Carl consider yourself lucky. We ordered from the 6 course menu. It changes quite frequently but some of the perennial favorites are always there. The oysters are served three ways. My favorite was the one with the marmalade. The salty briny taste of the oysters paired really well with the sweet marmalade. Always excited to taste something new! The fois gras is super buttery. Admittedly I don't eat fois gras too often but it's really excellent. Monk fish was very fresh and the dwenjang sauce was surprisingly spicy. Admittedly my 4th course was a little bit of a disappointment. Carl described the Pennsylvania Hen dish so vividly I had to try it. Even though I'm really a strict beef guy. I have a rule about never ordering chicken or salmon at a restaurant unless it's fried chicken or raw salmon. It was definitely presented exotically but the flavors fell a little flat for me. Chicken people will love it. But those beef lovers out there stick with the beef. BTW my kid absolutely loved her beef dish. American Wagyu cooked perfectly medium rare. She savored every bite. My wife looked at her and told her to make sure she marries a rich guy to support her beef habit lol. For the 5th course I had the chocolate dish which was great. And to be honest I can't remember what I had for the 6th course. Food is always great here but for me the service is what makes everything stand out. Carl and Harrison, along with the rest of the wait staff made our night very special. The timing of the dishes were spot on and our glasses were never empty. This was a perfect stop for viewing the sunset and having a few cocktails, yes its expensive. But ii was worth the stop and views alone. There was a wedding the day we visited, so it was very busy. Parking was easy and free down the hill. This place is absolutely beautiful, from the outside and inside. I would def go back and visit on a less busy day. Dont forget to visit the lighthouse, the walk isnt far from the parking lot. Next time I will make reservations to stay and eat, I will most definitely come back and update my review. We went for the sunset. Could it get a chair. We were 6 people . 2 men 4 ladies . I saw three seats at the bar . Three of the four women sat, I spotted a free chair and moved it to the bar . The male bartender told me I can't add chairs to the bar . There was ample space for it so it made no sense . He was just being difficult for no reason. Asked why got no response . I could have fit two chairs there if another was free. The chair was for the 4 th lady in my party not for me. He was very rude and did not care that a lady was standing when there was space and chairs available! It took 15 min for the female bartender to greet us. She finally came over and ask us for IDs. We were well over 21 close to 50 so it was not necessary they were just being jerks. One person in the party Id was just expired but the she had other forms of ID . The young female bartender did not care and would not serve her a drink nor look at other forms of identification. They were just being rude to us. So our party of 6 up and left. They lost out on a nice tab and a good tip . They did not care . The male bartender left a full bar and came running out towards me I thought he was gonna attack me he then told the young lady to get up in a rude manor and aggressively grabbed the chair which I was going to move back and removed it and put it back from the place where I got it. service is horrible very rude staff. I paid 70 in Ubers to get there and back and did not even see the sunset. Horrible staff won't be back. The staff will ruin that place ! They made no sense as to why a chair can't be moved for a lady to sit and why they would not look at another form of Identification. Very immature. read more

Decided to stop for lunch after taking a wrong turn on our way for the ocean drive.One of the best on the spot decisions and a very happy coincidence because this restaurant was open and the valet said the lunch time it's not too strict on the dress code.We were able to get a beautiful table right by the window and enjoyed gorgeous views of the ocean on a sunny spring afternoon. Our waitress Julia was very warm and welcoming and as soon as we heard the special, we had to try it.My daughter and I had a big breakfast that day and decided to have something small for lunch.We had the pleasure of trying the clam chowder,hush puppies and a chocolate passion fruit torte!Everything was delicious!Cornbread's clam chowder was named in the memory of a member of the culinary team for 40 years in which his signature dish was the Inn's clam chowder.A must for sure and one of the best clam chowders I've ever had! The hush puppies special was an explosion of flavors!Fresh and warm ,they were resting on a bed of jalapeños & bacon aioli with frisée and purple pansies! We decided to leave room for dessert and have the chocolate passion fruit torte.Flourless chocolate cake layers with chocolate and passion fruit mousse in the middle, sitting like a pretty castle on top of this beautiful river of passion fruit syrup and garded by this perfect Kahlua Ice Cream!! I stayed at one of the cottages for a week last june - horrible terror experience i called for coffee in the morning and the staff rudely scolded me on how i only can get one coffee with each breakfast - i told the staff that i did not order breakfast yet - then she yelled at me as to why i did not tell her that first I then told her that she should never do this to any other guest there - she hanged up on me - later her male friend called me who was on staff and started a fight with me on the phone over this and told be i was rude and aggressive towards her I told him that i would complain to the manager about the whole thing the staff male came down to my cottage with my guest - boldly forced withself in my room and started to laugh at me because i was 65 years old and should not be complaining about anything I asked him to leave or i would call the police he left next day a manager of the hotel came down and asked me to leave for my own sake because its an employee owned company and now all the empoyees were mad at me and want me to leave - he did not even ask me what happened i told him the story and he told be he did not know who to believe and since its employee owned he thought it was in my best interest to leave given the fact that they had my 13000 room deposit - i told them i was staying and they should be professional and correct this situation the manager said he would credit back my card - at this point i did not believe him and stayed the remaining 4 days In those days different staff were coming down with our food orders and questioning me on who i was and why i was there. I told them nothing because it was not of their business. on the last day they called me and told me the credit card was declined and that I may to to jail because of it. I called the card company and i had enough credit - they did not even try to put the additional 6000 on the card I went to the main house and called my cerdit card company and put both parties in touch with each other - they said their maching was not working and now it was the hotel after lying about everything then told me it went through while the credit card company was on the phone me and my guest were terrorized because of some popular employee lying about a very small incident that she wanted to blow up due to her influence with the entire staff this hotel was subject to a lawsuit from me - i choose not too due to the cost of litigation and the time I still work full time and could not afford the time and effort - i was too busy making money and a living for my family i do not recommend anyone going to this employee owned hotel since the employees are the king and the guests are the poor serfs If this happens to anyother elderly person and you have the time - go to the police station and charge them with a hate crime against you. - its no cost and it works it make take 3 years to litigate so be prepared to spend alot of time and effort I hope this persuades all not to go to this Castle hill in RI read more

This place has gone downhill. Tonight the bar tender with all the nose piercings was very rude. She seemed to be in bad mood and was very unfriendly. The restrooms were not available inside for bar patrons. The outdoor facilities were disgusting. Very unfortunate. Won't be back anytime soon even though we hve been coming here for years read more

Lovely place. Second time staying here with a group. Had a lovely room in the main house. First morning breakfast was good. Had the lobster hash, which was excellent. The servers were busy and forgot to bring our side orders. No one checked up with us on how the food was until we were leaving and it was too late. That evening we had a private cocktail hour and then dinner. Appetizers were good (scallops much better than the somewhat greasy spring rolls). Cocktail service was good. I had the lamb chops for dinner and they were amazing! But I looked to my left and the lamb chops served to that guest did not look nearly as good. BF also had the chops and said his were just ok. So a bit uneven. Breakfast the next morning was somewhat slow, but the food was good. Turndown service in the room was a nice touch. read more

We've heard a lot about this place over the years and finally started to check it out. Post-pandemic, work has been crazy, so we find ourselves taking weekend getaways more than long vacations these days. This is seen as being one of, if not THE, top place to stay in Newport ... and we can kind of see why. Although a bit 'old fashioned' (in a dark wood and ancient windows kind of way) ... it does have that luxury New England resort vibe. I'd put it on par with The Chatham Bars Inn. The service is very, very unremarkable. I'd put it at the level of a Courtyard by Marriott or Holiday Inn Express hotel. Most folks, with the exception of CJ, the greeter and valet who was first class, were just going through the motion ... including the management. It was almost like they were forcing smiles in front of you but were certainly not doing anything customer service-wise to go outside of the standard duties. We stayed in a cabin on the beach and it was fantastic! The cabin was small! Inside everything had its place, stacked or tucked away neatly. However, once you bring in your luggage a couple suitcases make it feel like you are staying in a camping trailer. Not much walk around room ... and the bathroom is located close enough to the bed that you risk hearing sounds through the door. The star of the show is the picture window looking out onto the ocean. You can see the small waves break into the shore from the living room area and in the summer, with the windows open, you'll hear the waves as well. We had a tiny deck with a comically giant table. There was maybe 1 foot of clearance around the table ... not sure whom thought this was a good plan. Many of the decks were longer with direct ocean views and sun lounges. The cabins at the end of the strip have the tiny decks. The furnishings inside are cozy and classy. White painted slats adorn the ceiling and there is also a small kitchenette. If the weather is nice, you won't be inside too much but for a couple the space is tight, but fine. For a family with children, it will feel as crowded as staying in a storage shed. I'd say 250 - 270 sq. feet. I heard that st one time, snacks and water was provided free in each cabin but since covid, that is no longer the case. The bathroom was average. A step-in tub/shower combo, which at $500/night off-season in the winter is unfathomable. The tub was nice ... a bit on the short side but surrounded by marble. I was expecting a rain shower and a glass door vs. the showerhead on the wall with a shower curtain. The heated marble floor was the highlight of the bathroom and very nice in the winter. Bath sheets were fantastic ... bath products were nothing special ... robes and slippers were cheap. We would 100% stay here again, only if in a beach cabin/house just because the cabins are so cozy and unique. Being steps to the beach like that is super exclusive in New England where there are surprisingly few direct oceanfront properties. Don't expect 5-star service ... or accommodations. 275 sq feet for $500/night off season and $1,200 - $2,000 in season is not at all a fantastic value for what you get. However, there aren't too many places like it around. If this was $350/night, we'd be here every weekend. read more

This place was highly recommended and I don't know why UNLESS you are overtly OBSESSED with: amazing sunsets, romance, people watching, yachtie vibes, great food and reliable cocktails, AHHHHMAZING wait staff (I'm look at you Juliette and Avery.. hopefully I spelled your names correctly) oh and of course the casual multiple celeb sightings (took every ounce of our being to not fangirl especially when you're sitting right next to them.. but privacy and boundaries were respected) if those things matter to you add The Lawn to your bucket list. Unfortunately, we were having such a good time we didn't take any pics of the food but trust and believe we ate lots: watermelon salad, oysters, cornbread; followed by: lobstah roles, fried redfish and more.. everything was magnificent! The view was breathtaking. We were with friends we haven't seen in years and this establishment just made our night enjoying each other's company. Our waiTRESS and her colleague were so professional and probably the funniest wait staff we've ever had. It was like dinner and a two woman show! Take it on the road ladies! such. a gorgeous. place. the scenery is immaculate, especially if you're sitting right on the lawn. i had a table close to the edge of the lawn that was still in the dining area, and that was great as well. but i would definitely recommend grabbing some adirondack chairs on the lawn if they're free. the staff were all so pleasant, and very knowledgeable about everything on the menu, and the town as well. the drinks were spectacular, and so summery - perfect for sitting on the lawn. the drinks were also pretty strong too, which made the experience THAT much more enjoyable :) the lobster roll i got really hit the spot, and they gave you a generous amount of claw meat with it! the fries were surprisingly stellar. i have no idea what they were seasoned with besides salt and pepper, but they didnt even need ketchup or any dipping sauces. overall, would highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area. just make sure you're ready to break the bank a bit haha! read more

Bring your meat thermometer I'll explain why... The beautiful view,our kind server keep this in a three and not a 1 star. Julia was a server in a very nice person... Three out of four meals were good and we enjoyed them... that is 75% or a C... One burger was delivered almost raw. Our friend Julia was very nice and sent it back. Another 20 minutes later they bring out another burger and lo and behold it's not raw but it wasn't medium or even close. After the two strikes we asked to speak to the manager... here's where the day becomes unpleasant. One would think after the first burger comes out they would make sure the second burger was cooked properly and it wasn't... Our server was very nice and apologized. The manager was rude... his first comment was "well what's the temperature?" I normally don't travel with my food thermometer but maybe I should from now on. Honestly the guy was rude and a bit of a snob... I know it's a newport , I know it's a beautiful place but customers are customer and there's nothing more irritating than a snooty employee who could just have been contrite and it all would've been fine. We had our daughter's wedding here. The views were beautiful especially the sunset. The food was amazing. The service was incredible. Carl and Tom are outstanding at their jobs. They make u feel very welcome and special. I would recommend them for weddings, dinner, any time. read more

Really quite a beautiful location- and they charge up the kazoo for it. Especially on season. Housekeeping is excellent- and the staff is extremely friendly, if not over-friendly. They seem to be on automatic pilot. Exuberant but unsophisticated- for an upscale resort. The breakfasts, which are good, are supposed to be included in the price, but they ask for a tip. That's ok, but they ascribe a price of $40 to the breakfast, making the tip $8 ($16 per couple). A little tacky, I think. Their homemade baked goods are especially good. Both for breakfast and the afternoon tea. Another annoyance is that they absoultley prohibit late check outs. Not a good policy. (Although they do allow you to use the facility for a while after check out.) Main issue is value. It is not the Breakers in Palm Beach or a Four Seasons, but they charge like it is. Ok for the Vanderbilts and Berwinds, but not the Smiths and Jones. read more

It's a delightful little lighthouse tucked behind the woods with some magnificent views at sundown. We stumbled upon this little gem thanks to Yelp. This is not a public domain, but rather for patrons of the Inn. There is a trail that will lead you to the lighthouse. It isn't the easiest to find, but I would say that it's not that difficult either. According to visitrhodeisland.com, this was "built in 1898, and stands at the entrance to the East Passage of Narragansett Bay". My husband and I didn't stay long, as there was some pretty high winds when we stopped, and you can't go inside. But you can get some magnificent views and it's a quiet, serene place that I don't think would be too busy at any given time. When we arrived, there was only one other couple there who were making their way out. If you're into lighthouses, this is a must see. read more
