I'm very surprised by the claims of rudeness here. My experience has been just the opposite. I've managed to sit down and engage Alan in long conversations about coin collecting, ethics, the process of setting up a business, and received some free excellent advice in case I'm ever interested in getting into the coin selling business (I'm a few towns away, so it wouldn't effect their sales). I've brought my son in here to buy some Whitman folders to start collecting pennies and nickels. I'm primarily interested in foreign coins, and this is one of the few places around which carries any. I was surprised by the other reviewers. I've been in this shop a few times, both to purchase and sell. The staff is very knowledgeable and if they don't know something's value, they research it to find out. I haven't dealt directly with the owner, although he's been there the times I have, just with other customers. But the staff was very friendly and the deals they offered were fair. Of course they are there to make money, it's a business. Unless you want to go into business for yourself, you have to consider that they are going to give you a fair price, but have to make money off the deal too. I have a very good fieind that was burned out of two properties in the Dixie Fire, he brought me some melted silver coins, as I'm a collector he thought I could get him a good deal. I brought the melted silver to CASTRO VALLEY COIN, weight was 3.2 pounds (on their scale). They paid out $400.00, some how the math doesn't seem quite right on this, and I dought I'll be returning to CASTRO VALLEY COIN. I came out of my way to sell gold here. I called ahead to let the person who answered the phone I'd be getting here maybe 5 minutes before they closed and the person I spoke with said that would be fine. I got here about 10 minutes before 6 and the store was already closed. I went out of my way to get here so I'm mad the person I spoke with wasn't up front about closing early. This was very unprofessional and wasted about a hour of my day. I don't care if this is the closest, most trustworthy business, I'm not ever doing business with them. Just left their Business today (11/26/2013) and all I can say is if you want to be "cheated", then this is the place for you. I had some Euro's that I wanted to exchange. The exchange rate for $10 Euro Dollars is $13.52 USD. They wanted to give me $4.00 and I said "Thank you, but no thanks". And this was after I had explained that my family has been ALL OVER THE WORLD and regularly brought back currency from other countries. This was a "test run" and they failed miserably ... in my opinion take your business someplace else. read more

I went to Castro Valley Coin for the first time about a month ago. My dad has been a coin dealer his entire life, as far as I can remember. He told me to always watch out when dealing with precious metals because the values go up and down every day. When I walked into this coin shop for the first time I automatically put my guard up. I had suspicions from the beginning because of what I have grown up with my entire life. Greg the manager at Castro Valley Coin introduced himself and his colleagues that were around him. I told him I had some valuables to show them and automatically Greg took Control and placed the people and/or himself at my service. He seemed very interested and intrigued on the items that I had brought him. I had some US coins and I had some foreign items as well. Greg by far was immediately comforting so that I could not only understand, but gained some confidence in his ability to relay me information about what I had brought in. Not only was I impressed with his knowledge of the coin industry, but if there was something that he was unsure of, he would venture out to seek a more proficient source to guide us on items that I brought him... I will come to Greg every single time I have something that is of precious metals, precious coins, or just precious to me in general. In my personal opinion I feel that Castro Valley coin really outdoes themselves in the aspect of service. We are in a pandemic and not everybody has time for everybody, But Greg and his team at Castro Valley Coin will make time for you. read more

My girl was putting on her bracelet she got for being a bridesmaid at her best friends wedding. It has sentimental value. The bracelet snapped. She started crying. I told her to go to work and it'll be fixed before she gets home. Called this place they said to head over. Got there and showed them the piece. They had it looking like new plus polished the diamonds for $20. I was only in there for 15 minutes. $20 is a completely reasonable price to put a smile back on my lady's face, trust me I've had to pay more. read more

At Castro Valley Coin they play the low-ball trick. The first guy gives you an offer that is around 40% of what others will iffer in the hopes you will take it. When you say NO, they send you to another guy who makes a better offer. They don't even come close to the melt value of the silver coins at current rate. It is obvious they are there to make money off of you. The prices they ask for similar coins is 200% ro 300% of what they offer. I wont ever go back there. Be warned. read more

Called a number of coin dealers for quotes on some bulk silver coins. CV Coin's prices were 10% to 20% higher than the other local dealers. I went in with those and some other estate valuables. Spent an hour+ with Alan going through the stuff. Yes, he can come of as abrupt at times. Get past it. His pricing was fair and he is very open about what he pays vs. what he can sell stuff for. I use to think this coin shop gave the highest prices on scrap metal but i was wrong.On top of that the person i talked to was rude & assumed i knew nothing about the market price of gold & silver.He acted like i was bothering him with a simple question of "What do you give per gram for 10K gold?"I won't get into it but we went round & round with him not answering my simple question but instead questioning me about if i even had 10K scrap gold.He finally told me $13.40 a gram & i called 3 other places after that & found a coin shop on Piedmont Ave. (Oakland Silver & Gold) who pays 20% below the going rate always.He gave me $18.50 a gram for 10K .Castro Valley Coin just lost several customers yesterday for being rude & ripping people off. read more

The new owners of this store are not as honest or knowledgeable about numismatics as Alan Kruzer the old owner, especially the taller skinnier one on the left. I would highly not recommend this store because they do not seem to have a clue what half of their own numismatic inventory is even worth which means when you sell your coins they can unfortunately be undervalued. For gold and silver bullion they seem to be okay though. For example: I walked into the store and agreed on a price for a rare item, but the owner changed his mind 10 minutes later after re-checking the book value with his friend over the phone even though he did so himself when pricing it originally. read more

I came here to give this shop a 1 star. Alan, who I guess doesn't work there anymore really tried to rip me off and it seems difficult to believe it was by mistake. Twice when I sold coins he wrote down by hand the amount he owed me for various coins. When he added them up, twice he made "math errors" that happened to be in his favor by hundreds of dollars. He claimed it was because he couldn't read his own handwriting. Once I totally forgive, twice is highly likely deliberate. I want to share my insight into this place, having made my first visit there last week and my second visit yesterday, and having spent an hour or more during each visit both quietly looking and listening, as well as engaging the proprietors in conversation when the opportunity arose. Firstly, the two guys there are incredibly knowledgeable about numismatics, and this knowledge derives from an innate passion for coins. Put another way, they know their stuff because they've spent years doing it, and they've spent years doing it because it's what they want to be doing. For that they have my admiration. The flip side of this coin (sorry, couldn't resist) is that they can afford to run the business however they want, including...eh, let's just say not being as patient with certain customers as they could be. For that they most definitely have my admiration! Secondly, they have both done quite well for themselves, which demonstrates foresight, savvy and business sense. In fact, I overheard both of them say at various points during each visit that most of their business is "wholesale" transactions, meaning large sales/purchases. This points to the storefront existing primarily to facilitate their purchase of people's unwanted coins, as well as a place to house their stock. In other words, they're not primarily interested in selling individual coins to random folk. However, that's more or less what I did, and my patience and politeness were rewarded with patient and polite assistance. Not only that, but each of them was willing to field my many questions, when they had the chance between helping their other customers (buyers, sellers, and an apparent multitude of longtime well-wishers). Thirdly, from my perspective, the prices they charge for the items they sell are quite fair. If there was a range of potential values for a given coin, they showed them to me and then offered me the lower price. This suggests that most of their money is indeed made from bulk transactions, and so they don't need to rely on salesmanship or trying to "nickle and dime" (pardon the expression) casual customers. Quite the contrary. They'll freely share their knowledge, wisdom and insight with any interested party rational enough to approach them in a calm, courteous and respectful manner. As a fellow shop owner who deals with the public day in and day out every day, I applaud them for offering their expertise under these restrictions, and by extension for enforcing standards of acceptable conduct. To the people who complain about their being "rude", I challenge you to take a good hard look in the mirror and see if perhaps some of the blame rests with you. I know if I was fortunate enough not to have to rely on the patronage of each and every person who comes into my store, I'd be much more liberal with voicing my protests when some dimwitted shithead goes off half-cocked, or tries to tell me my business, or demands this or that, etc. Since the gentlemen at Castro Valley Coin & Currency are that fortunate, it's more than reasonable to expect that any guff thrown their way within their own store be repaid in kind. Assuming that people's conduct towards others indicates how they themselves wish to be treated, hostile customers warrant a hostile response. As such, any comparable response to other people's poor conduct isn't rudeness: it's common sense! I digress. Lastly, they humored me in picking through their stock to find specific specimens that really "called" to me. They even tossed me free sleeves and plastic cases for the coins I purchased. Perhaps above all, the guidance and advice they offered (which ranged from tips on types of coins to avoid, to the hazards of untrained coin "restoration") was absolutely invaluable. At no point did they try to pitch me a product or steer me towards purchasing anything. They just seemed pleased that I was so interested in their trade. This clearly demonstrates to me that they're here because it's what they love to do, and furthermore that when approached correctly, they're happy to share that love. Who could ask for more than that? Well, I suppose I could ask for Yelp to leave my review posted, but expecting them to value integrity and virtue is obviously asking rather too much. Like asking a snake not to strike, or a politician not to lie. Yelp is biased, duplicitious and deceitful by design. I just had my second visit to this store and I have to tell you just how accommodating the owner was. When I arrived, much to my chagrin, I saw a sign in the window stating that the shop was closed on Monday. I was disappointed, but I figured that it was my fault for not checking the operation hours beforehand. As I was standing on the sidewalk digging in my purse for my car keys, the owner opened the shop door behind me and asked if he could help me. I entered the shop and told him that I wanted to buy some silver eagles. He stated that he was closed on Monday except by appointment only. I told him that I hadn't known that before driving to the shop from Livermore but that I understood. He then said he could go ahead and take care of me and asked me to have a seat. While sitting there as he went into the back to open his safe and retrieve the coins that I asked for, I noticed his lunch sitting on the desk. I felt doubly bad now. Not only had he opened his shop on his day off, I was also interrupting his lunch! Mr. Kreuzer even went so far as to go back to the safe to get me a specific year coin that I needed for a gift. After we completed our transaction, Mr. Kreuzer was even kind enough to sit and chat with me for a few minutes answering my questions about various silver and gold related topics. Well my first experience at this place and definitely my LAST. Went in today and waited well over 5mins to even be greeted with a hello. And there was 2 employees. Guess they never heard of Eye contact and greeting makes a customer feel appreciated or welcomed. Took in a lot of coins and I did get more than I thought but service was crap. The man was more concerned I was gonna interrupt his lunch hour. Which is crazy they open from 1030-5pm and go to lunch at 12hmmm. He sure did let me know I should have came at a different time. Sorry for the inconvience. But maybe taking an extra 15 mins out your time for a customer would help your business or better yet there's 2 employees have off set lunch hours. My daughter a teenager was confused on how someone runs a business by being rude about the type of product we brought in and how it seemed as though we weren't welcomed.
