It was pretty gross how there was the rest of someone's food on a table and was there from when we entered until when we left (about 30 mins). The cashier was SO nice and the place is a vibe. The food was DELICIOUS. I got orange chicken and they definitely made it from scratch (there were orange peels in it). It was so good. Was it worth it? This food is delicious and affordable. I ordered the Thai Sweet and Sour without spice and with tofu. It was amazing and filling - I am exciting to eat my abundant leftovers later! BBQ ribs, greasy. I ordered once but not again. Cashew chicken is okay, again, lacks any real flavor. Moo Shu beef w okay but the miso sauce had a strange after taste and they charge an extra $2 for the pancakes. Shouldn't charge for this. Kung Pao chicken is okay, vegetables need cut smaller though. After they messed up the order I called in and was told by the owner, that I'm a liar and didn't order from that restaurant as I was looking at my receipt for $40. I LOVE casual Chinese! I have been here at least three times in the past few months, and each time everything has been great. Everything on the menu is extremely affordable. I can usually get 2 sides and an entree for less than $15. The portion sizes are large enough to share. The usually add on a wonton soup which is only $1.75 with a lunch order (they rub these 7 days a week). In addition to the fantastic food, their service at the front is very friendly. Very disappointed in the food here. Egg roll had nothing in it but cabbage. Fried rice was bland and didn't contain anything but rice; no onions, peas, carrots or even fried egg! So I thought the customer service in the place was pretty amazing. I had lots of questions seeing as how I didn't expect such great offerings for a fast food menu. With that being said, I thought it was a little pricey for a fast food joint. We tried several items one being the egg foo yung. This recipe was a little less eggy than I like and closer to a Korean omelette (which I believe adds a little flour), the gravy was also much thinner than I'm used to but it was good. I also tried the kung pao beef which I thought was good. I would definitely go back and ask more questions and try more items. read more

Small hole in the wall type place that has really good Chinese food and has been around for decades. Portions are generous for the cost and I can usually find something on the lunch specials rotation that I enjoy and comes with their wontons. Usually get the Chicken General which I believe is their version of General Tso's Chicken but perhaps a bit more spicy. The pad Thai was so bland the only thing the taste was some hot powder they put on it. It had no other flavor at all. The noodles were pasty and way overcooked. More like mush than noodles. I started out going to Casual Chinese for lunch when I worked at the downtown Staples just across the river some 10 years ago. And I just started going back there because I'm tired of crappy Chinese food from the joint in my neighborhood. And the same lovely people who used to take my order are still there! They even remembered me even after all this time. Tonight I got my favorite, Chinese chicken curry with fried rice, wonton soup, and an egg roll. And I have to say I nearly blissed out on the egg roll alone. They have the best egg rolls in town. Crisp veggies, perfectly fried wrapper, and just enough seasoning. Their wonton soup hasn't changed a bit in a decade. The wontons are a mouthful, the pork filling is very meaty and seasoned well. And the broth is worth having by itself. The chicken curry I get as hot as their cooks are willing to make it. And yet despite nearly blistering your tongue, it doesn't spoil the flavor of the chicken. The veggies are crisp and crunchy, and the chicken is cooked thoroughly, and without the baking soda wash most Chinese restaurants commonly use. And I've never had a meal that disappointed when I've gone to Casual Chinese. Unfortunately you sometimes see detractors such as Dan M. who throw out unfounded claims based on stereotypes. Having been a customer for years, I can attest to Casual Chinese getting their foodstuffs from reputable and reliable sources. Just last week I saw one of the owners dropping off a load of fresh produce from a well-known local produce wholesaler. Everything was name-brand grade A produce as good as you'd find going into the kitchens of a Perkins on up to The Golden Lamb. So you won't find any food of questionable origin here unless you bring it in yourself. Its no wonder they've won awards for having the best Chinese takeout in town. read more

I was looking for some, well, casual Chinese food for lunch one day. I wanted something easy in and out, not buffet, and with all the usual choices. My other requirements were that the establishment have ample parking, offer egg drop soup, and be within quick driving distance of the Lytle Park area of downtown. This place fit the bill. I ordered Egg drop soup, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and fried rice. It was all very good. I also ended up with a bonus order of crab rangoon, which was a pleasant surprise. I just hope someone else didn't end up without their order. No complaints about any of the food or service. This is the kind of place that you will miss if you aren't looking for it. It's near Hot Head Burritos and Jersey Mikes. Clearly other people knew about it, because at least 5 other people came in and picked up orders while I was waiting for my food, and many others were eating in the small dining room. One small negative, the soda in the machine has a sign on it that says there is a charge for refills, so know that going in. I personally only drink water with Chinese, because I go heavy on the soy sauce, but didn't want you to be surprised if you went up for a refill. read more

I've lost my appreciate for Chinese food, but if sick wife wants sick wife gets. For her Chinese is the surest way to bust a cold. So I took down what the family wanted and headed over there with a book to get a little reading down while I waiting. This is your typical strip mall fronted take out. No one usually sits. It's probably 90% take out. The chairs and tables are bolted to the floor in two parallel rows. Every place has these. It was late on a Sunday. What took me back was how clean the place was. The only thing I could find on the floor was an ice cube that had just recently fallen. It wasn't just swept but scrubbed. Kitchen looked the same way. Clean, Clean, Clean. This hasn't always been the case with Chinese places I've experienced before. Especially if run by the Chinese owner like this place seemed to be. Their standards are not our standards. I'll leave it at that. But this place was great. The order taker was quick. The food serviceable. read more

I love Casual Chinese--found it by accident about 8 years ago when I started venturing out of Covington during lunch. As other posters have mentioned, there is an extensive daily lunch menu, where they offer 5-6 choices per day, all at $4.50 base price (otherwise it is visibly listed) and then just this endless list of "OTHER" lunch specials priced at a base price of $4.60 (and otherwise referenced if more). There is not a day I don't come in that there wouldn't be something I'd want from the menu. Yes, they are clean--very, very clean. And the nicest folks at the counter--they have many regulars--a lady today showed one of the clerk's that she'd gotten her nails 'finally done" and then she asked if the clerk was feeling any better. A very friendly place. They had some difficulty running my debit card (the magnetic stripe works about 90% of the time) and I asked them to simply "key it in" but was told they weren't supposed to anymore because customers then call their banks and say they never authorized the sale! Are you KIDDING me? I can't imagine doing that to these nice folks, but nothing surprises me anymore. The food is fresh, it's fast, it's tasty. Since the only "service" is that they bring you your food, they refuse tipping. I hate that you can't tip them because it's one of the few Chinese restaurants around that I love to go to and actually feel they deserve a little extra than what I'm paying because the prices are VERY reasonable! read more
