Here are some good points: -Lots of working washing and drying machines -Simple, working change machines -Bright and airy - lots of natural light, but I was there during the day, not sure what's it like at night. -Didn't smell as bad as it looked... The not-so-great: -It looks like no one has tended to this place in years. This makes no sense in such a picturesque town. How much more would it cost the operater to hire someone to come in and tidy up for a couple of hours per day? -Extremely run down appeareance, dust everywhere, dryer sheets and trash on the floor, full trashcans, gunk in the sink, machines look haggard (but they work!) -The machines are so close together. You'll likely be head-to-butt with your neighbor as you try to wash while they dry. -EXPENSIVE machines. One load in the single oload dryer will cost you $3.00. Where they do that at? Oh, I forgot - Catalina! The sign posted when I was there (01/23/18) said the current hours were 7am - 10pm.

A Carnival Cruise Line was offshore and the sun sparkled off the azure Pacific waters like diamonds. Then I realized the small botique hotel I was staying at there used this laundry service. I had seen their pick-up van in front of the place when I left that morning. What I like about Catalina Laundry, beyond their great spot along the shoreline is that I believe they recycle their water that they use. There were big giant containers full of stored water with signs waning: DO NOT DRINK! Being that Catalina Island is also experiencing the same drought as the rest of California, this makes sense that they recycle precious H20. 4 YELP STARS for Catalina Laundry.

As a company, I hope you acknowledge, compensate generously, and appreciate the staff on your team for their hard work and dedication to the people who visit your camp and for giving us the experiences we have that make us want to send our kids the following years. It is them, and their talents, that turn a 2-star facility into a 5-star experience. I can not emphasize that last sentence enough, so a little louder for the people in the back: BRENNA AND SOFIE TURNED YOUR 2-STAR FACILITY INTO A 5-STAR EXPERIENCE. Our school signed up for intro to snorkeling, a night snorkel, a second day snorkel with play time (jumping off the floater), tide pooling, the large air swing, and kayaking. I read quite a few of the 1-3 star reviews from years past and could not disagree with them more. Could the facilities be upgraded? Yes. Should they be? Maybe. But this is camp. Have none of you gone camping before?? Camping is dirty. It is dusty. There are bugs. You're lucky when there are flushing toilets. This isn't a hotel with maids! And all of these kids- they could all use a lesson or two on cleaning up after themselves. You want the bathrooms to be clean? Teach your kids to not piss on the seat. You want camp floors clean? Teach your kids to shake off sand before coming in, and how to sweep the floors. It was embarrassing to see how many 13yo didn't know how to sweep the cafeteria of the food THEY DROPPED ONTO THE FLOOR 5 mins ago. I felt like all of these things, they were learning experiences for the kids and the ones that complained the most needed the lessons the most. The only time I had a real concern during the camp was during the night snorkeling; as the chaperone, I had a few minutes of panic when I felt claustrophobic as half of the kids (Sofie and I were watching 16 13yos) were climbing on top of me/the boogie board I was given, and the secondary chaperone, not a strong swimmer, also started to drag on me. During the night dives, I wonder if it would be possible to provide not just a buddy system, but have a handful of body boards provided to the kids? Some of these kids have 0 swim skills and not knowing if school-appointed chaperones are good swimmers, taking 16 kids into the ocean at night, hoping for the best... feels like there could be a couple extra measures in place. Food was sufficient- it was all "edible" and while I did see kids eating only cereal all three days, I also saw kids piling up their plates and eating it all. I did wish there was a way to keep the hundreds of small black fruit flies off of the salad greens and broccoli in the salad bar. Our rooms were inspected upon departure and another school did arrive by boat as we were departing. This means that the only cleaning done for bathrooms/cabins was by our departing kids, so my advice for future parents sending their kids- pack clorox wipes so your kid can wipe down the plastic mattress before setting up their bed and to wipe the toilet seat before their cheeks touch the pee-splattered seats. Pack crocs so they have shower slippers- shower floors were really gross. Know in advance that your kids will be wearing recently-pissed-in wetsuits, about 2 hours after another kid has worn them- but I'm going to guess this is true for every single rental gear dive spot at any vacation destination. And also know that they'll have a great time at camp.

My brother bought a sheet of stamps to commemorate the 250th birthday of the USMC, coming up this November. He told me that the counter postal employee was friendly and there wasn't much of a wait. In the building, there are a series of PO Boxes and passport services are provided here. This is the biggest post office on Catalina Island, starting as a Fourth Class office, being upgraded to a Second Class office in 1920, and then being moved to the Atwater Arcade in 1927. The arcade was renamed 'The Shops at Atwater' after a major renovation in 2019. The post office maintained its location even during the renovation. Side note: When the US Post Office was the main way to get correspondences and packages delivered across our country, each area needed physical post offices. These post offices were each led by a postmaster, and the amount of commission income each postmaster received from selling postage stamps. The vast majority of offices were in rural areas, designated as fourth class. If a particular area grew, the corresponding post office would rise in rank, ultimately to be a first class office, receiving the most revenue from the sale of stamps. Thus, the history of the Avalon post office moving from 4th class to rise to 2nd class, signifies the growth of Avalon and the island of Catalina itself.

She told me they were out of international stamps but 3 forever stamps equals 1 international stamp. She was very helpful. We were in Catalina for the Thanksgiving week. We had to check out of our vacation rental Friday at…read more10am. We headed down to the dock and put our luggage in the XL lockers because the Catalina Flyer wasn't boarding until 4pm to take us back to Newport Beach. One of the workers told us the prices as he walked by. He wasn't rude, but wasn't overly friendly either. Once we determined we only needed two XL lockers, I walked around the corner to pay the the two lockers. Handed them my card and was told cash only. I was also notified by the same gentleman the ATM machine on site wasn't working. Luckily my hubs tried it and it was. We paid the $25 x 2 locker fee plus a $10 key deposit. (should have been $20 per key, but he let us do just the $10 since I literally only had $60 cash in hand). Unfortunately, one of the lockers we put our stuff in, he told us was not going to be available that day. So we had to change the locker. Fine. Around 3pm we went back grabbed our stuff, and turned in our keys to reclaim our deposit. Honestly, for the most part it was easy peasy this way rather than lugging our stuff around all day all over the island. Was it costly? Yes unfortunately. Could I have asked CIVR to help? Yes. But having our stuff right at the dock was essential. While I think the cost is a bit high... I don't have any issue paying it. I was tho, highly disappointed in the attitudes of the employees. The woman didn't seem to care or offer assistance in anyway even as multiple people were confused. The man, he at least talked. He answered questions. He explained how it worked. Not overly friendly, but he seemed more approachable then she did. Is it worth the peace of mind? Yes! Is it the best choice? The cheapest choice? The stress-free choice? I have no idea. Lol. But if money isn't an issue and ease of accessing or getting your luggage is of importance to you, don't hesitate and just do it.
