I will simply describe the facts because I cannot prove that it was the crew who drugged me and robbed me. But I beg you--the reader--to not go on one of their tours, especially if you are a solo traveler. I was a solo traveler on the daytime snorkel tour with Catamaya Tours. Because I am a trusting person, and inexperienced at traveling alone, I foolishly, openly told the crew (and some passengers) during casual chit chat that I was solo and that I had taken the public shuttles to get to Puerto Aventuras. Most of the time the crew was OK and appropriate except for when one crew member said, "are you here for a massage?" when I had come out of the water. That was rather a sketchy comment, but I laughed it off.
During the approximately 4.5 hour trip, I sipped on 4 margaritas, I talked with several people, and I swam (they said we could not snorkel because the water was too rough). I remember every detail of my conversations with people, my thoughts and observations, what I ate, etc. At some point soon after the crew member handed me my last drink (toward the end of the trip), I have only hazy memories, and very soon after that, I have complete, 100% amnesia.
Let me interrupt by saying that I am not a novice to alcohol. Though I rarely have more than 2 drinks in a day, if I am out for a fun event with friends and food, I certainly have had 4 over the course of less than 5 hours many times in my 50 years of life! I always retain a very clear memory of everything that occurs when I am drinking that amount.
Back to the worst experience of my life: The next thing I knew, I was sitting on a bench at a bus stop, uncertain how to get back to my apartment. I didn't realize at first that any time had passed. But suddenly the Mexican Police grabbed me and handcuffed me and took me to jail! I could go on and on about that. But the important part is that I started having diaphoresis (when a person sweats profoundly), which I later learned is a side effect of one of "roofies" commonly used by people who drug others' drinks. Then when I talked with my realtor, he told me that I had called and texted him during my amnesia--I have no recollection of this at all. He said I made no sense.
And by the way, when I finally became clear-headed, I discovered that all the cash from my backpack and several other items were missing, along with the earrings right out of my ears.
Eventually, about 9 hours later, my realtor finally helped me get home. I was violently vomiting. However, the next day, when I woke up, I had no "hangover" whatsoever. I felt weak and exhausted and really disgusted that someone did this to me, but no headache or other hangover symptoms. This also is evidence that alcohol was not the culprit in causing me to lose my memory!
I held back at first on notifying Catamaya because the experience was emotionally traumatic for me. I was having trouble bringing myself to contact them at first. Furthermore, I had a feeling that they would not accept responsibility and would most likely "victim blame," which would be easy for them to do since my evidence was subjective. I knew they would almost certainly say I drank too much--it is so easy to just accuse a person like that.
So, I would like to share with you the exact words that I got as a reply by Catamaya. I will cut and paste their exact words. It's shocking to me how poor their response was.
Keep in mind that if any passenger were as drunk as they describe, it would be horrible to leave that person unattended and alone in a foreign country. Here was Catamaya's exact response to me:
"Just a quick update: as you left my enployees car you forget first your last drink which you asked for as you left the boat, he handed it to you. Then you tried to take the colectivo taxi in the wrong directon to Playa del Carmen. Some other people then shower you the way across the highway to your busstation where you slept on the bench.
You were already drunk on the boat, thats why the captain ordered to help you to the front gate and you still insisted for a drink to go!!
All this has absolutely nothing to do with a ' nockout' pill or a drunk as you claim!!!!! You wouldn't have been able to walk All the way to the busstation!
Let's face it, that were way more drinks as you admit, you got drunk and the rest you know now. I suggest you should leave it that way and waiting untrue stories on TripAdvisor about my company and staff is just really unfair and not cool at all, you harmed that way more then you can imagine. We tried to help you in your Situation...... ."
I put a lot of thought into whether or not to write anything online, but I feel that this company is unsafe. I feel that it is my responsibility to the public to report what I experienced. read more
