I summer in Cataumet and have been coming to this market for years. I've always been pleased with the quality and prices. I had noticed that after it changed hands a couple years back, it hasn't quite been the same. I still shop here regularly and will continue to. However, I just tried the lobster roll for the first time and was absolutely shocked at how small it is for $32 dollars. Outrageous for a fish market. The $11.00 roll at "Jack in the bean stock" Falmouth is bigger and tastier, and they also grill the roll. Seafood Shanty on the canal, $30.00 and is amazing and so big you can barely finish it, it also comes with a pile of delicious fries. Very disappointing CM read more

Pat and his wife did a fabulous job transitioning to a new store format after taking over the business. The BEST lobster roll anywhere, and I mean anywhere. I have tried lobster rolls all over the East coast and never compared. Lots of claw meat, perfect mayo ratio and a hint of pepper make it top notch. Best lobster roll, guaranteed. This place sells fish to be cooked at home and their only already prepared dish is the lobster roll, and for $13/$14, it is AMAZING. A LOT of lobster, not as much mayonnaise as every other place. It is very fresh and you definitely get more than enough lobster for your money. Holy fresh-off-the-ship fish, Batman! This place is the real deal stocked full of the freshest fish I've seen in a long, long time. Good enough for sushi, I was told. Easily good enough for searing which is more than most people do anyways. This fish market earns my admiration for a serious dedication to the art of selling only the freshest and best to their customers. But the real treat here is the lobster roll, which ranks among the best I have ever tasted. A lobster roll shouldn't be a fancy affair, if it is ur doin it wrong. $13 earns you a small bag of Cape Code potato chips with a hot dog bun improbably stuffed with a half pound of lobster meat. This isn't some dressed up "lobster salad" nonsense to cover up old or frozen meat, this is the real deal with only the slightest hint of mayonnaise to go with the sweet taste of very fresh lobster. The lobster roll as it should be: fresh, simple, unassuming. It goes without saying, but I've seen too many people get fooled: You should make it a rule never to have a lobster roll at a place that doesn't have any live lobster on the premises (look for the tank). With the recent burning down of James Hook & Co, I wish I could find a tasty Lobster roll with this level of simple freshness in Boston. read more

On a soft chewy Portuguese hot dog bun that could only be improved if it was buttered & toasted. If you're just craving a quick & easy, small, affordable but daggone tasty lobster roll hit them up! Wow.....I have never seen a place consistently decline in quality as this place over the last 20 years. It just gets worse and worse year after year. The fish is so old and of poor quality, that it now resembles the horrid supermarket fish quality. Go to the Clam Man, or Falmouth Fish Market in Falmouth and see and taste what fresh fish is supposed to look and taste like. The few times a year that I have to go to Cataumet because I can't make it into town in time, I cringe at the old fish that he is selling. Then you put all that time into cooking a nice dish, and it still tastes horrible because the quality of the fish that you started with was so poor. Stay away!!! read more

I always get my seafood here and have never regretted it. 10 lbs. of little neck clams on the grill- check. Amazingly huge cuts of fresh swordfish- check. Tuna cut to order- check. They even have the spices to make an amazing lemon pepper swordfish right there. We just finished the bachelor party and got 2 lbs. of lobster meat... needless to say that was amazing and a big hit. I was disappointed when I pulled up and saw steps into this place - not wheelchair friendly. I wanted to pick our my own lobsters, so my friend pulled me up the steps. The place was empty (a Friday afternoon in February). We got our lobsters and some cooked shrimp and cocktail sauce. The lobsters we cooked that night, the shrimp we ate the next day, both were excellent. This place is not a bargain, but it does have highly quality seafood. The two young guys working said that it gets CRAZY in the summers, lines out the door, etc etc. I love the Cape off season. :) read more

I'm a local who has been buying my fish from Cataumet Fish for many years. We hosted a destination wedding last weekend. Peter Fisher was more than accommodating. He supplied 300 oysters on Thursday ad 60 cooked lobsters on Friday. Everything was superb. The oyster-shuckers were sure there were more than the 300 oysters requested. The large quantity of lobsters were cooked perfectly right down to the last one that was served because the the efficient way they packed them. I have been there several times. The selection of fresh fish locally caught is impressive. The problem comes with the handling of raw product. The service people "all the time" handle the raw product with there bare hands. The "germ theory" was pretty much a done deal just after the American Civil War". Owner or (last resort) town health inspectors should do there job read more
