Today as Im walking thru the USC health science campus I was offered a boxed food and soda, I politely said no thank you, they insisted and I agreed. I was walking to my car since I was going home. Im so glad I picked up a box. It looked like a fancy dessert box, when I opened my box...there was cheese and crackers, a small sandwich, lemon dessert and some other fancy appetizers...do delicious!!! And Fresh. We had the pleasure of working with Ara for our wedding reception at Heritage Park. The tasting was easy to coordinate and the team was helpful in making recommendations because of how often they worked with the venue. They provided us with a buffet dinner for 300 guests with China service. They brought plenty of staff to help ensure the dinner ran smoothly and timely. We found this catering business many years back. I can honestly say thanks to Bev Iwanabe, a former boss here at LACOE, this company has grown from our referrals and ultimately ended up being a commodity here, serving the best breakfasts and lunch and price is reasonable. Like I said I have worked with this catering business for over a decade and have always been satisfied with service, quality, variety and price, but it was not until they opened up a cafeteria service that they have become part of the LACOE family. Each morning you are greeted by the most efficient, professional, and friendly ladies as if you are walking into a family members kitchen as they are cooking up a storm. The two Maria's can whip up an omelette, pour your coffee ring you up in a jiffy but that is not what makes this cafeteria stellar...although those omelettes are to die for, no it's the personable and personal customer service that makes your morning brighter. I have done mystery shopping for decades even the Department of Agriculture rating stores when EBT cards were about to be passed out. SO nobody can critique the way I can. I am looking from top to bottom, freshness, cleanliness, environment and easily find excellent restaurants, but the frosting on the cake is how do the employees make you feel when you walk in the door. I may never use another caterer ever again! As an event planner, I have a number of caterers in my go-to arsenal. Herach & Ara are hands down the best I've ever worked with. Across the board everything was perfect! I've never been able to say that about anyone I've worked with in all the years I've been in my profession. *The food was fabulous! Everything was fresh, flavorful and perfectly prepared. *The staff was great. Very friendly, hard working and eager to please me and all my guests. *Very creative thinking when planning the event. Sometimes I need all the additional help I can get. Owner Ara is VERY detail oriented and came armed to our meeting full of great ideas that he executed perfectly. *Everything looked amazing! The fall color scheme with gorgeous flowers and decorations really made everything so beautiful. *They offer an excellent price point. Everything was more than fair and reasonable. *Both the set-up and break down was quick and efficient. The event I had was for over 350 people and even more showed up who failed to RSVP and yet, there was enough food thanks to their generous planning. My first time using Herach & Ara myself--but have heard many good things with them from colleagues. I will warn that they get VERY busy during the Holidays. But bear with them--it took a bit of nagging but Mari got all my details confirmed and quotes sent to me (2 weeks!). She is very nice and great to deal with, but there is a bit of lag time to get the paperwork (so book early!). Matilda and "little" Poncho were our servers for our holiday event.. they were so great I will be requesting them to be servers for our second holiday event next week. They came early to set up, and the food was kept piping hot. They even gave us decoration tips (we asked for it!). The spread was absolutely beautiful, they provided Christmas tree branches and pine cones to spruce up the serving table as well as a nutcracker! They even bothered fanning out napkins on the side of the food warmers for added decor. After the event they even helped clear finished plates off the tables and offered to help with anything, really. Absolutely LOVE these two! Everyone was happy with the food. I give props to the catering company in general--very few times have I seen food actually kept on warmers from pick up to delivery on site, and there was even warmers for the gravy. The ham was kept with ice packets during transport, and the salad dressings had ice in their tray to keep cool. There are very few places that take the extra step to actually take care of their food in transport to make sure people do not get sick. I am VERY impressed. Today I held my first New Teacher Induction Colloquium and had the luncheon provided by Herach & Ara. It was amazing! They had to drive quite a distance and were prompt and set up quickly, with no interruption to our event. The food was delicious and the servers were attentive, professional, and gracious. The teachers and mentors were very tickled that they were treated so well and felt very appreciated. I was very pleased with how they came in and were very aware of not bothering our event until it was time for lunch to be served, and the clean up and helpfulness with the extra food was also very swift and professional. When it comes to the main course, the prime rib or chicken with mushroom sauce just don't do it. I know they are catering for hundreds or even more but the concentration needs to come onto the main courses. They both were dry and lacked flavor. The baby potatoes and sides are decent. I used to order catering for small and large events when I worked in Commerce, CA and they were always so helpful. Fast Forward a few years and the gal on the phone would not accommodate an order of box lunches for my meeting of 10 in Santa Fe Springs, which they assured me was in their delivery radius. I went out of my way to google this Catering Company b/c I had forgotten the name of it but wanted to patron their business again b/c they had always delivered great food in a fast and friendly manner. Boy was I disappointed when the gal on the phone cut me off and said they only accept orders of 20 or more (I had previously ordered 10 lunches in the past) and made no effort at asking more questions to see if we could work something out. The economy must really be booming if they aren't interested in business anymore. I would have driven to pick up the order if that had been given to me as an option, but Marisa (Maribel maybe) had ZERO interest in servicing a former customer who always paid same day with a check or credit card. In summary, if you're a small business DO NOT EVEN BOTHER, b/c apparently Herach and Ara don't do small orders or small businesses. Shame. Shame. Shame. read more

Good fast service they grilled the steak and chicken on site and the smell was amazing!!! I had the steak and rice...the rice was dry and hard. But the steak was WOW... Alittle dry but packed full of flavor!!! The servers where super nice and didn't make a mess they also got everything set up very quickly. Our company always caters with Herach & Ara and we have yet to be disappointed. Working with Marie is great...she is professional and always confirms before the event and follows up after the event to make sure everything went as planned. Workers are always on time, preps in a timely manner, and presentation is always so perfect. We always get the pepper steak (so good!), mushroom chicken (guests always rave this entree), and cheesecake bites (to die for!). One time, we wanted an Asian theme lunch and Marie gave great choices and the beef teriyaki was absolutely delicious along with the other choices. I had a box lunch from this caterer today and it was awful. Literally the worst I've ever had. It was an Italian sandwich and the meats were rubbery and tasteless as was the pasta. I exchanged it for a tuna sandwich which was made with the cheapest dark tuna imaginable and dressed with watery mayonnaise...yuck. The only edible part of the lunch was the cookies. Great food and the event was handled very well. They had a large selection of menu choices. We wanted a "Thanksgiving style" menu and they had a great fit including some modifications. There was also good follow-up by Ara to make sure everything was just right. Ara also showed up to make sure it was set up right before heading off to another event. Finally, they handled the decorations and presentation well including the all the place settings and they boxed up the leftovers which we took to the local food kitchen. Ara Balayan is a prince among men. I volunteer each year at Christmas at the Halls, the holiday party for the kids living at Central Juvenile Hall. Ara provides excellent Mexican taco bars for over 1,000 people in at least 15 different buildings. It's a caterer's nightmare. Yet, the food is hot and delicious. The tortillas are exceptional and that can make such a difference. True soft taco aficionados know that the condiments are not complete without the radishes. The radishes are there! I highly recommend Ara and his team. (I also believe that Ara's company donates all that food and staff to the Christmas at the Halls event. That's some big donation. For that alone, I'd ask you to consider him for your next event.) read more

Dear Ara, Words cannot express the gratitude and appreciation I have to Catering by Herach and Ara for providing our meals and beverages for our 2011 USC Math Finance Conferences this week. Our attendees have raved about the catering "Wholesome", "Nutritious and Filling", "Not to spicy - just enough kick to satisfy my taste buds and stomach"....and the comments go on and on. More important than the food were your catering assistants/servers. Eddie - who greeted me each morning at 7:00 AM sharp with a smile- he worked efficiently and succinctly that nothing was left to be desired. Martine and Hargoe- preparing/setting up/serving/replenishing/breakdown, etc., etc., and with a sense of humor- I felt comfortable enough to go handle other tasks for our conferences because I knewthese men had EVERYTHING under control. I am beyond happy with the catering service I received from Catering by Herach & Ara! I organized a retirement party for a city employee at City Hall. Though the location was not easy to find (for anyone), this catering company showed up early and had everything set up before the event started! First of all, I heard about them through a coworker who just told me that their food was amazing. I contacted them and a few other vendors for an estimate. Not only did they have the most reasonable price for the food but at the tasting, I found out how delicious their food was! Their menu has such a large variety of foods that they even brought more food to the tasting in case I didn't like what I had ordered. Regardless, everything was delicious. Ara went above and beyond to ensure that we were ready the day of the event, which we were. I appreciate the fact that I did not have to worry about the food catering on the day of the event because they were just perfect. Absolutely loved the service! My husband and I got married in June and decided to go with their Mediterranean selection. Ara was so helpful and had was able to prepare a tasting for us. After we decided to go with his services, we bugged him so much but he always had a great attitude. He helped us with linens and servers. He even managed to convince our venue to grill on site. Now going forward with FOOD STANDARDS, this company has provided Food services for my company on many different occasions this year. Their most recent attempt at breakfast today was just very sad over all. Their lunch menu the day before was a joke all across the board. Their quality has dropped drastically and it is sad because many years ago it was not like this. So those who want MEXICAN FOOD please do not ask for it from this place because TACO BELL would be a better option. Their Chinese food Makes PANDA EXPRESS look like a five star restaurant in Beverly Hills. The final act was there PINK CHICKEN which they covered in butternut squash aka BABY FOOD! Ara s has catered our Gala event ( Cathedral Alumni Association) for the past 5 years or so for over 1000 people- with great success.This year though, was exceptional. The Medditerean Salad of Feta, Kalamatas and roma tomatoes was fresh The Rice pilaf the baby potatoes cooked with dill were cooked evenly had great flavor The chicken breasts with tomatoes and a light sauce were juicy flavorful The treat for me were the roasted tomatoes persian style the sqaush and green chilies That was a great taste n texture flavor explosion. I was amazed and delighted when the boxed lunch selection at a large function I attended today included a stack clearly marked, "Gluten-Free." (Vegan boxes were also available.) It is extremely rare for a person with Celiac disease such as myself, to be offered a complete and appealing meal that is verifiably safe. Usually I'm offered a only a vegetable salad (sans dressing) and/or fruit, and must supplement with my own protein, etc. to make it through the day. Thanks to Herach & Ara, I was able to enjoy a delicious chicken caesar salad and a gluten-free cookie! The salad was super fresh and tasty. The thick and creamy dressing was on the side, along with a little cup of roasted pumpkin seeds to add crunch. I was doubtful that the cookie could really be gluten-free, but the company was quickly able to confirm that they had purchased a special dough to ensure that it was. It too, was delicious! If and when I have a need for catering, you can bet I'll be calling this company. The woman on the phone assured me that they will service all areas, all cuisine desires, and all budgets.
