I had invited at least 45 people to attend the funeral, and for a large portion of the service, it went smoothly and as intended. It was only until my ex wife arrived that everything started to go downhill. Being the petty ex-partner she was, she came with hellfire and brimstone following behind her. As soon as she arrived, she began throwing accusations at me and my guests that my son was not dead, and instead, was claiming that we were holding her husband hostage within the coffin in the middle of the room. We all collectively laughed at her, brushing off her incoherent screeching as nothing more than delusion. When she began using the cake knife as a weapon, and the punch bowl ladle as a makeshift blunt object, the staff promptly called in their bouncer "Jaquan" to deal with the situation. Police were immediately called, and dragged the demented woman away from the premise. We soon all raised a toast to my son as he was lowered into his grave, ignoring the desperate and aggressive pounding coming from inside the coffin. Overall, I was very pleased with my time here at Hughes Funeral Home and Crematory, and would recommend their wonderful services for any untimely passing of any friend or family member you may have.

I was not allowed to see him at all. Finally he was released to the funeral home. We were planning to have have him cremated per his wishes. The people at the funeral home gave us an "appointment" that we could see his body. When my daughter and granddaughter, and I arrived, I was desperate to see him. I was told no, we had time do the paperwork first. She meant pay. She seemed to be intentionally stalling and dragging out the paperwork. I got very upset because all I could think about was telling my beloved husband goodbye and that I loved him one last time. She walked out and told me that she couldn't deal with me. Well, I'm sorry but the hurt feelings could have been avoided if she had just let us see him FIRST. Then, when the paperwork was finally finished, she told us we had 10 minutes. I told her that the man told us over the phone 15 to 20 minutes. It was for "ID only". She pushed a paper across the table and told me to look right there as she pointed, this is the policy. I just burst into tears. She led us back to the room where he lay and let us in. We stayed with him for a while, said our goodbyes and then we left. Losing your mate if 36 years, unexpectedly, to a horrible accident, and having him taken away to the coroner is awful enough but to be treated like we were at this funeral home, no compassion at all for the newly widowed wife or family. I wish we had never even heard the name Hughes funeral home. I strongly recommend people, that you start planning now and avoid this funeral home. My husband and I were new to the area and had no idea. When you are in a business where people are devastated by the loss of a loved one, you dont add to the pain which these people did.

The first thing she asked was "did I buy it from them?". She wanted to make sure I knew that if I did not purchase from them they will not replace it. My baby's father is at the same plot. We bought 4 plots. He died in October. Nothing but a big square of dead grass. If you have a loved one, please find a better place for their burial. This is a big corporation that gouges it's customers as every turn and once that money is in hand, nobody cares.

Old historical cemetery & landmark that volunteer groups are helping to clean up. Cemetery dates…read moreback to the 1870's & has many prominent members of the African American Community buried here. Many veterans are buried here as well. This cemetery is a non perpetual care cemetery, & many of the families & ancestors care for their relatives plots & headstones. FYI this area is known as The Campground, & was used as a campsite for Confederate Soldiers during The (American) Civil War. Veterans from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, The Gulf War interred here as well as Buffalo Soldiers & Tuskegee Airmen. Various organizations are volunteering to clean up the cemetery and document veteran burials here.

Professionally the cemetery services were well done. Grave, setting the area up for the grave side…read moreservice, selection and arrangements of the marker etc. explaining the various details expenses etc. all very proper. The problem is the funeral home is a separate business from the cemetery so it is difficult to figure out the validity of charges. The total charges for my mom's funeral totaled over $17,000 well over the national average. But, since the cemetery is a not for profit I can only assume the funeral home charges of over $10,500 were excessive. My recommendation is get the general price list from different funeral homes prior to the individual's demise and make a selection. Getting a case of sticker shock while your grieving makes the process even more difficult than it should be. I do know funerary merchandise and services have a high profit margin that I can't find information on. Good luck with your funeral and understand that the funeral industry will charge what ever the market will bear and regulatory oversight is concerned with billing practices, transport, disposition and handling of the remains not with profit margins.
