If I could give the zero stars I would. I unexpectedly lost my beloved husband July 23. He died…read moreof a head injury from a fall at home. He was sent to the coroner for autopsy. I was not allowed to see him at all. Finally he was released to the funeral home. We were planning to have have him cremated per his wishes. The people at the funeral home gave us an "appointment" that we could see his body. When my daughter and granddaughter, and I arrived, I was desperate to see him. I was told no, we had time do the paperwork first. She meant pay. She seemed to be intentionally stalling and dragging out the paperwork. I got very upset because all I could think about was telling my beloved husband goodbye and that I loved him one last time. She walked out and told me that she couldn't deal with me. Well, I'm sorry but the hurt feelings could have been avoided if she had just let us see him FIRST. Then, when the paperwork was finally finished, she told us we had 10 minutes. I told her that the man told us over the phone 15 to 20 minutes. It was for "ID only". She pushed a paper across the table and told me to look right there as she pointed, this is the policy. I just burst into tears. She led us back to the room where he lay and let us in. We stayed with him for a while, said our goodbyes and then we left. Losing your mate if 36 years, unexpectedly, to a horrible accident, and having him taken away to the coroner is awful enough but to be treated like we were at this funeral home, no compassion at all for the newly widowed wife or family. I wish we had never even heard the name Hughes funeral home. I strongly recommend people, that you start planning now and avoid this funeral home. My husband and I were new to the area and had no idea. When you are in a business where people are devastated by the loss of a loved one, you dont add to the pain which these people did.

While she was grieving her husband they gave her this letter at the church and then because didn't sign it, they took upon themselves to follow her to her home, without her knowledge, to try to pruseude her to sign it. Professionally the cemetery services were well done. Grave, setting the area up for the grave side…read moreservice, selection and arrangements of the marker etc. explaining the various details expenses etc. all very proper. The problem is the funeral home is a separate business from the cemetery so it is difficult to figure out the validity of charges. The total charges for my mom's funeral totaled over $17,000 well over the national average. But, since the cemetery is a not for profit I can only assume the funeral home charges of over $10,500 were excessive. My recommendation is get the general price list from different funeral homes prior to the individual's demise and make a selection. Getting a case of sticker shock while your grieving makes the process even more difficult than it should be. I do know funerary merchandise and services have a high profit margin that I can't find information on. Good luck with your funeral and understand that the funeral industry will charge what ever the market will bear and regulatory oversight is concerned with billing practices, transport, disposition and handling of the remains not with profit margins.

This tree is part of a very interesting piece of folklore and putative Mobile History. In essence,…read morein 1835, a man (Charles Boyington) was charged, convicted and hanged for the murder of his best friend. On the gallows before the hanging, he proclaimed that an oak tree would grow from this heart as evidence of his innocence. A few years later, someone else confessed to the crime and surprising to most, a tree had already started growing. This is said tree...approximately 190 years old. BTW, Live Oak trees can live up to 500 years. I certainly hope it will.

The legend of this tree is definitely cool. Back in 1835, Charles Boyington was convicted of the…read moremurder of his friend, Nathaniel Frost. Throughout the trial and after his conviction and he sentence to be hanged, Boyington proclaimed his innocence. Just prior to his death, Boyington stated that his innocence would be proven when an oak tree would grow out of his heart and from his grave. Later, two people would confess to the crime, but unfortunately, it was too late for Boyington. An oak tree did indeed grow from the location of where he was buried and still stands today. There are claims that people hear crying and whispering near the tree and attribute it to the ghost of Charles Boyington seeking his vindication. I love these cool discoveries and ghost stories. If you are in Mobile, Alabama, I recommend seeking this tree out.
