I ordered the fish tacos and loved them. The rest of my group raved about their orders. There aren't many healthy choices on the menu, but everything seemed to be fresh. The menu is extensive and quite eclectic. Fountain drinks are included with the meal cost, which are unlimited refills. The place is comfortable and has a sense of "home." There are family photos and travel memorabilia throughout the restaurant. The staff were beyond friendly and very accommodating. Service was great. The service was OUTSTANDING! Everyone was so nice. The owners were there to greet me and ask how everything was. It was very caring, but not over-the-top or intrusive. The food was really good. I had the shrimp po-boy, and really liked it. The person I was with also had shrimp and loved it. The atmosphere was good--typical diner, but not greasy or gross like some diners can be. Excellent food, good environment, good for the neighborhood. We ordered the Shrimp Po Boy, Buffalo Chicken Salad, Bowl of Gumbo, Kids Burger/fries, and a side of fries. Note: We didn't realize the Po' Boy came with fries on it's own so don't feel you need to order a side. Everything was spectacular. Far better than I would expect from a diner style eating establishment. The service was good except I wish they would refill the drinks for you. They allow (force) you to fill your own drinks from a soda fountain. I didn't like this. Plus, with kids it made it more challenging to keep them from bothering other customers when trying to get more drinks. It is kid friendly. They had a high chair for my daughter. I was staying at Hilton garden at St. Louis airport and was looking for a restaurant nearby. I came across this restaurant on Yelp, which had good reviews. It's a family owned restaurant and has a homely feeling to it. We parked at the back of the restaurant. We went to this place twice and ordered shrimp artichoke crostini, blackened tilapia sandwich with fries, Memphis style gumbo and BBQ shrimp. There was a kid who was serving all the tables both days. He was quite exhausted with all the work but still did his best. Food took some time to come. They use frozen seafood but I can't complain as the prices were pretty reasonable. Shrimp artichoke crostini was yum. It was crunchy, buttery and flavorful. We ordered two plates of this dish. Tilapia sandwich was ok as frozen fish doesn't stay moist, so it was a bit dry but the flavor was good. Gumbo was yum but I just wished to be a little more spicy. BBQ shrimps were the best. I could eat them every other day. Dipping bread in the spicy butter was divine. Loved it so much. Overall, my husband and I loved the food. We will surely visit it again next time, when we are in St. Louis. read more

We've driven by so many times, so we decided to stop in, upon scanning the menu I noticed the fish tacos. My wife had a shrimp/fish dish (which she enjoyed)WE also got the PLAIN wings, and barbecue fries. Once we got home the food was devoured, and we were completely SATISFIED, so satisfied WE went back the very next day. The tacos were seasoned perfectly, with seasoned coleslaw atop of them, I compare them closely to the tacos at my favorite Mexican restaurant. The plain wings (breadless) were delicious and the sauteed Shrimp & Fish with "Cajun rice" was a particular delight to my wife. I heard great news Hong's about this restaurant so I was excited to try it. Our waitress was nice...it was her 1st day. I ordered shrimp and grits and my friend ordered the fried wings and fries. I really didn't care for the shrimp and grits and my friend said her wings could have cooked a tad bit longer. There appears to be a ventilation issue. When we left, we both smelled like old grease! When we arrived the restaurants decor and setup was very homely, and welcoming. It was a Thursday afternoon at 3pm when I arrived to meet my family. The reason we chose this restaurant is because we notice there were a plethora of dining options, even for vegans like myself. So when we ordered our meals, the wait time wasn't bad, when our food arrived it looked appetizing, I ordered the veggie jambalaya. My first initial bite was that the food was made to order, because it was smoking hot. My second bite was when I noticed my food didn't have flavor, it lacked seasoning, but was seemed like had been submerged in spices. My rice was watery as if it had not been drained, and the vegetables were tasteless. I ask my waitress, who by the way was very kind and patient, if I could order something else, she said I could, so I ordered the veggie tacos. These tacos were basically cole slaw and sautéed mushrooms onions, and tomatoes. It surprisingly had well seasoned, but it still lacked taste, it didn't taste like anything special. My uncle who I was dining with was upset they dolloped a scoop of cole slaw on his unseasoned fish sandwich. My sister also struggled with the grilled cheese for my nephew that was grilled way too hard, so hard the cheese was hard, it took them 20 mins to replace that. My family and I experience at this restaurant wasn't as exciting as we'd thought it would be due to the food, although the staff members were all very nice and welcoming, the food wasn't so tasty. We most likely visit again when the chefs decide to face their fears of seasoned homestyle food! read more

Cathy's Kitchen is just a fabulous addition to the neighborhood! We have really enjoyed being able to bring out of town guests over for great, yet reasonably priced food. I love the Tuscan Pasta, and my husband could live on their gumbo. There's a nice variety of sandwiches as well. They've remade the space here so nicely too. I am really disappointed at the reviews on here. I went to Cathy's Kitchen for breakfast. I was impressed at how clean the restaurant was. When I went in, everyone was smiling and the other patrons were really friendly. I ordered the breakfast entree called The Ken, which consisted of a huge waffle, two chicken wings, and a few eggs. Everything was piping hot and the service was good. I actually ended up meeting a really nice fellow and having a good conversation, as I was eating alone. I have a bone to pick with some of these reviews. There are plenty of restaurants with expansive menus. That is not a bad thing unless you are a simpleton and have never traveled. People expect black owned businesses to be flawless. While we should hold ourselves to a high standard, we should also uplift each other like every other community does except us in St. Louis. Cathy's Kitchen is a great little diner and I will return. The food is good if you like soul cooking and the atmosphere is positive. read more

Today was my first time eating at Cathy's Kitchen. I was not only delighted by the decor and welcoming atmosphere, but also by the care that is evidently put into each dish by the chef on duty. As I tried to decide what to order from their unique menu setup (the dishes are categorized by the state/region from which they come from - love this idea!), I found many different meals that I look forward to coming back to try. I did, however, choose to order and FELL IN LOVE with Cathy's Fish Tacos!! The tilapia was beautifully grilled and seasoned, the sauce and slaw were the perfect amount of heat/spice and brought the entire meal together within the soft flour tortilla. There was no need for additional ordering... It was melt in your mouth, keep you coming back for more, delicious! I was (am) also impressed that each employee in the restaurant greeted my party and myself, they were available if we were in need, and most gracious. Don't misunderstand - this is by no means a stiff, shoo you out the door type of eatery. When you walk in you feel enveloped, as if the booths/chairs and atmosphere as a whole are saying, "Come in, rest, socialize, laugh and enjoy!" We were also greeted by Ms. Cathy herself and I was able to gush directly to her about those fish tacos! But I have never seen any restaurant respond so well to criticism so that now the menu makes a lot of sense, with choices to suit everyone, and the food is very good.
