Soul food restaurants are often a WIN in St. Louis. This one has so many options. They aren't always the same from week to week but the staples will be available. The food is very uninviting. I had the Chicken Dumplings no taste, dressing was spoiled (had a twang taste) and the greens taste like they were cooked in dish water. I ordered through Doordash and it was a total shitshow at pickup. I get a call that the sides I wanted were not available (black eyed peas and mash potatoes). How are you out at 2pm? Substituted sides for the worst spaghetti and barely passable mac-and-cheese. It was a blessing that the order of oxtails were small since they were dry, fatty, and barely separated from the bone. 10/10 customer service. The gentleman who helped me was extremely polite and friendly and made an overall great impression. The staff provides a warm atmosphere. Friendlier than Jadens or sweetie pies. As with most, taste and customer service go a long way with me. 10/10 cleanliness. 8.9/10 taste. I think with soul food most people have a preference or a particular way they like things to taste. Mama's does a great job of producing aesthetically pleasing food that tastes great. And this was because there was 1 slow person serving sides and a very slow person serving meats off and on. I get it. Business is doing well but you beed to adjust. For instance, hire 2-4 people to help serve. At least 10 people saw the line and returned to their cars. Now regarding the food. The meats were good but the sides were bland. They rib tips are good .The biggest problem is they never have the food that they have listed. They don't give you enough meat and depending on the day or the cook the food do not be seasoned. Food was cold and meat was dry. 2nd experience was the one of the worse customer service I've seen. Cursing behind the steam table, unorganized service and waiting in line for more than 45min for a meal that was very unsatisfactory. Greens where very gritty and beans taste like canned dirt. Mom's Souls Food always has decent food and the prices are very affordable. The service really leaves a lot to be desired though. You would expect that a business that's been open for years would appreciate the customers and know how to talk to the people. But, some of the staff (especially the servers) seem to always be angry and short-tempered. When you come to do business with a place and they don't even want you asking questions, you know that you need to find another place to take your business. After today, that is exactly what I will do. I usually try to support African-American businesses, but when I see the disdain that this place shows to its customers, I know it's time to take my business elsewhere. As usual, after placing my order (chicken and dumplings, porkchops and BBQ ribs) they called back (2X) and said what food they did not have available that day. To Mom's Kitchen (if you are reading this) it would be really helpful if you would put what food you have available each day, including desserts. I would choose this place over sweetie pies any day. I honestly would of gave it 5 stars if it just wasn't so hot inside. For me it was to hot to sit and eat. It is a buffet style type restaurant, so don't expect to sit and be waited on. You can expect once you do sit down someone will come, and ask if you are happy with your food.
