I have got to start scheduling my reviews. Okay, I've been coming here since it opened a few years ago. So I am a bit of a OG. I have two favorite bagel spots in Brooklyn-- Bergen Bagels and this lovely place here. We all know Brooklyn is the bagel borough and Catskill holds its own. Bagels are made on site and if you come in the morning just as they come out you will cry from joy. I've had the breakfast meals-- bacon, egg, home fries, the works. But my heart rests with the bagels. I have had pumpernickel, plain, poppy, salted, rainbow, whole wheat but my recent favorite and official Saturday morning staple is the everything. In the mornings, I want a little salt to kick off my day. That bagels hits home every time. And I always make sure to come in right as the batch comes out, and if it's not out yet--I WAIT. It is that serious. I'm a simple girl-- plain cream cheese is my go to, though I've had the vegetable one too. They have Harney and Sons tea, Celestial Seasonings too I believe. They have great option and also serve an array of deli sandwiches, which makes this place a great stop for breakfast or lunch. read more

Convenient. Quick. Consistent. Catskill Bagels keeps it simple and I can appreciate that. You won't find any of those gourmet, Instagram famous flavors here (rainbow bagel, anyone?) but that's what makes it homey. Flashback to this morning: after a quick run I stopped by to snag some breakfast to go. Ended up ordering a BEC with avocado (an extra $1.50) and was in and out within 5 minutes. The bagel was soft with just the right amount of bite and the egg was cooked omelette style. My only qualm was with the bacon: a little too fatty for my taste, but hey, not a deal breaker. Their pricing is more reasonable than some of the other spots on Cortelyou which is always welcome in my book. As long as I'm living in the neighborhood I'll probably continue to keep Catskill in my rotation of breakfast spots. read more

The reviews pretty much echo my experiences here. My boyfriend and I (both black) have been looked over or skipped for the white folks behind us. Happened twice, of course we spoke up for ourselves, but it still left a bad taste. I have been here about 3x because I do like the bagels, but we get charged a completely different price every time for the same thing. There are no prices posted. Also one time I ordered a small juice and my boyfriend ordered a large and they were somehow the same price. When I asked for the large instead because it's the same price, I was met with attitude and confusion and suddenly she lowered the price for the small. Weird. The bagels are good and never had an issue with their food or service, but if you want to sit and have a relaxing bagel and coffee on a weekend morning go somewhere else. For some ungodly reason, the music in blaring and because they use some sort of service like Pandora with ads, the ads are twice as loud as the music. Loud enough that you can't hear the person sitting across from you talking. Seriously, I don't know who actually enjoys hearing Ja Rule blasting at 9 AM on a Sunday. I love this place - it is my go to spot for breakfast in the neighborhood. It isn't gourmet, but I don't really want that when I'm a little hung over. I always get an everything Bagel with cream cheese, lox, lettuce, tomato, and capers with large coffee. It never fails to make my tummy and spirit happy. The staff if nice and gets the job done - this is a neighborhood bagel spot, not a yuppy frou frou establishment - so if you are doing an anthropological study of the Brooklyn natives as you get your PhD in your own mustache, they probably won't be that nice to you. I like this place and am surprised by the bad reviews! Pros: Great bagels, lots of toppings, someplace nice to sit. Iced tea is pretty good too...enjoyed the rainbow cookie! They deliver (though you'll have to wait awhile on a Sunday). Cons: took off a star bc staff tend to be rude. Also, what's with the $10 minimum on cards at a bagel shop? I appreciate the impact of the pandemic on hours and service, but I don't understand how that translates to making really bad bagels. You're a bagel shop. I have been coming here for a while and have been pretty tolerant in dealing with this place but I cannot stay silent anymore. This place could be great if it weren't for the owner. She is terrible and needs to hire an actual GM because, in addition to scaring her staff, she scares the customers too. The staff is borderline rude and the morale of the place is terrible. I can see why because when the shrewd owner lady walks in it's like Leo DeCaprio walking into the plantation in Django. They're afraid of her and it is easy to see how: She snaps at the staff, talks down to staff and customers alike. My wife and I were having bagels there last week, peacefully, but when the owner walked in she started clearing tables by throwing the plates around and slamming them on tables. It was quite startling. It was clear she wasn't happy with the staff's performance but rather than give constructive criticism or even positive reinforcement, it seems she uses the staff's fear of reprisal to squash any hope of doing a better job. Also, the $6 debit card minimum is a lie. It is one thing for you to have a minimum fee on a CREDIT card but having been a retail merchant myself, I know that there is no need for one on debit transactions. And if so, just charge the tax on items! This past week I bought a bagel with eggs, turkey and cheese that came to $5 and the cashier told me that I would have to buy something else. False. That is predatory retailing and not necessary in a place with items as cheap as theirs. Bottom line: The owner needs to go. We won't go back until she is gone. read more

I ordered an apple bran muffin. They gave me a muffin. I bite into it and I see cream and carrots. I go back to the counter to explain she game me the wrong one. They were incredibly rude, claiming that is how they do apple bran muffins. It's not, because I go in and order one every weekend. They made a mistake and didn't own up to it. I tried to find a way to contact them directly but couldn't find an email address or the like. My partner and I ordered breakfast today before 10am and when our order arrive it was incorrect. My Scrambled Morning has cheese and came without the turkey bacon on the side that we ordered. My partner's Catskill Mountain Omlete came without the cheese he asked for (yes it was in my omlete). We waited 15 minutes for the side of turkey bacon to finally come out after my partner had to ask another employee because the cashier was completely unhelpful. When It finally came out I went to get it and told both of them that our food was now cold because we were waiting on just a side of turkey bacon for 15 mins which we ordered with the rest of our meal. We finally got to start eating our cold meal at 10:20am. The more helpful person replied "Okay." Looked at the cashier and walked away. No apology. Nothing. When the breakfast rush calmed down around 10:40am I went back to the counter and asked to speak to them about what happened. The cashier didn't acknowledge me at all and the same person I spoke with earlier told me that it was because the kitchen was backed up. Then I made a point to explain that I would rather speak with them now rather than write a review online she said "Okay. Sorry." and again just walked away from me. Bagels are pretty solid and maybe they got new staff because I did not have a problem. When I walked in there was a huge line but the staff was pretty efficient and I did not have to wait long for my bagel with cream cheese and breakfast sandwich. The iced coffee is bad...It's in a fountain machine that should be kept cold but it's probably not plugged in. As I was eating, I noticed that there was an older white lady (probably the owner) suddenly arrived to the counter to help out. She was so utterly rude. She kept shouting out orders that we ready to be picked up and scolded a customer for not picking it up right away AND she threw a dollar bill at one of her staff that was at the register. Ok, I will finally take the time to get some things off my chest about Catskill, as I feel I have given them some time, and it is not in the heat of a post-bagel debacle. So, how long has it been now, and the menus still do not reflect what gets wrung up at the register? They have had the same menus since they opened and there is just too much inconsistency for a good customer experience. I am convinced that the people here giving more than one star have just completely resigned to having standards for where they spend their money! The owner is awful! Anytime there is a discrepancy with what something costs, or should cost, she rudely never takes the high road, and has a take it or leave it attitude. There is just no room for that in a neighborhood that is all about word of mouth - she doesn't get it. One day while sitting next to the window eating a bagel(that the week prior was $3.50, and this week and different waitress is $4.00) she walks outside and right in front of the window spits a loogie on the sidewalk. This is one classy lady, let me tell you. Take a page from Sal and the guys at San Remo - get new menus printed - costs maybe $30 - and if the customer asks for substitutions, it will be clear what it will cost because it is all spelled out on the menu. Not hard. I have sworn them off for months, and tell everyone I can that it is awful. Its just lazy business ownership, simple stuff being ignored. I really don't understand these bad reviews. I'm in here at least twice a week, order a fresh, delicious bagel with cream cheese and I'm on my way without any problems. Great shop to have in the neighborhood. Reading over the reviews, though, I see that a lot of the one-stars are for delivery. First of all, who orders breakfast food for delivery? If your eggs arrive cold, maybe you should make eggs yourself or walk a few blocks and eat them in the restaurant? Second, people are giving one star reviews for smoothies?! I haven't checked in here much but I've here many times. The employees are friendly enough but I have witnessed the manager or owner be flat out rude to customers and last week when I was walking by she was outside yelling at a mother and her crying children. The pastries are from BJ's. I actually saw them bringing them in - which is cool but they are charging way too much for grocery store baked goods. I really wanted to like this place, based on how nice it looks from the outside. But looks can be deceiving. The first problem at Catskill Bagels Co. is the stupid system they have set up for ordering. You order in one place, and then you have to repeat your order to the woman at the cash register. Not a big deal if you ordered one bagel, but if you had a lot of stuff it can be a serious pain to remember it all. Here's a novel idea: have the people taking orders write it down and then hand that off to the cashier. Or have the person who took the order ring you up. It would certainly cut down on the amount of chaos when things get busy. I ordered two bagels and asked that they both be toasted. Neither of them were. If they can't get the simple order of toasting a bagel, I wonder how well they'd do if I were to order something complicated. And the biggest reason I won't be returning to Catskill Bagel Co. is the cashier, who also must be the boss of the place. I think her name is Angela. I don't know if she's just hell-bent on getting customers through as quickly as possible, but if so it comes off as rude. After I relayed my order, she said, "11.50" As I opened my wallet and looked for the right bills, it apparently wasn't fast enough for her because she curtly repeated, "ELEVEN FIFTY," to which I said, "Yeah I know, I'm working on it." This place would seriously benefit by putting this woman in a back room where she would not interact with their customers. The only reason I might come back to Catskill is for a dessert or muffin - something they can just hand me and not screw up the order. Once upon a time there existed a bagel shop. Wait no, maybe it was a cafe. Or perhaps it was a deli. With tables. I don't think anyone was really clear on exactly what this little store was. It had seating, like a cafe would, but it definitely was not a cafe, more corner deli with tables. That little store sold bagels. Their bagels were mediocre at best, not quite chewy enough to be a true bagel, not bad enough to be a bad bagel, and although any bagel not classified as good can be bad, I'll call it a mediocre bagel. Except that one time I found a hair baked into my bagel. That was a bad bagel. That was a very, very bad bagel indeed. That store had a very large menu, with all the things you find at a diner, like pancakes, waffles or chicken wings. Also all the things you find at a pub like mac and cheese, or chicken wings. They had paninis of all sorts - very good paninis I might add. There was a woman, perhaps about 40 years old who worked the counter, and probably owned the bagel/cafe/deli place. Now she must have always been having a bad day every day, and should've hired friendly staff. They had a $10 minimum for credit cards, which is a very bad idea for a bagel shop, where many people wanted a bagel and coffee and nothing more. Overall, that coffee/bagel/deli spot stayed open and sold more bagels, some good, some bad, some with hair in it. And life moved on, some people were smart and went to Johns Bakery instead. read more

I ate at Catskill Bagels three times. Once when they first opened, once on a Sunday with my girlfriend and another time when I was in the neighborhood before gong to work. All three times the bagels themselves were excellent. The first time I went was shortly after they opened and the help seemed a little disorganized when the owners were not standing over them. The second time, they overcooked my girlfriend's bagel...end of my Sunday morning trips there :-) And the third time I picked up an excellent bagel to go for the train ride into Manhattan.
