I wanted a nice warm cinnamon raisin bagel with something fulfilling inside. The Great Gatsby caught my eyes. It just seems good when you read all the ingredients. My husband and I popped in here after completing a 5K race at Prospect Park - this place was on his list of "great bagel places to try in NYC". I was planning to be basic and order what I always order: an everything bagel with egg and cheese. However, I noticed a bagel that I couldn't resist: a PRETZEL bagel. I'm a huge pretzel lover, so I knew that I had to give this bagel a try and I'm pleased to say that it did not disappoint!! It was soft, salty and very flavorful - combined with my favorite (egg and cheese), it was a delightful combination that was oh so satisfying after running 3 miles. We will DEFINITELY be back for this special bagel after our next race in Prospect Park! Heads up: this place is a bit pricey compared to other bagel places, but a "pretzel bagel" is unique (haven't seen it before) and totally worth it, in my opinion. read more

The service is very friendly and the bagels are fine, but the flavored cream cheeses are the worst I've ever had from a legit bagel spot. My bodega's scallion cream cheese had more scallions in it than Shelskys! I'm attaching a photo of the lox spread because there was so little lox in it I thought they'd gotten my order wrong. For $9 I should be offended by the small size of their bagels, but with the way prices are now that doesn't shock me. Nothing wow'd me, but yet nothing really disappointed me about the bagels here, except that there is absolutely no indoor dining here. This is exclusively a takeout joint, unless you count two benches outside. To get a better feel for the bagels, I ordered two types, one toasted one not toasted. The one I ordered toasted was a plain bagel with bacon, egg, and cheese, your BEC for you New Yorkers. The one not toasted was an everything bagel with cream cheese and lox. I also ordered two pastries but they will not affect the rating here as this is a bagel joint and not a bakery. If they taste great, great. If not, no loss. Now before I start this, I will preface by stating I have eaten their bagels before at their appetizer location in Cobble Hill, and commented on it. That will not influence this, this will not influence that. As it was cold outside, I tried the BEC first. The bagel is small in appearance, but it is covered in a nice amount of cheese and bacon. The egg is perfectly cooked, and the plain bagel has just enough sweetness from the kettle water to balance out the saltiness of the cheese and bacon. My only complaint is that the bagel felt more like a hard roll and less like a bagel. It is basically the opposite of a Happy Gilmore putt, nice and easy. The everything bagel with cream cheese and lox followed. Again, the bagel is small in appearance. However, because it was not toasted, it tasted as hard as a rock. The bagel, like the plain one I just tried, is also more like a hard roll. It also was lacking in flavor and was pretty dry. The lox and cream cheese were fresh and plentiful, but the hardness of the bagel precluded me from really wanting to enjoy this. Overall the bagels are decent but not worth running out of your way for. It might be something I will stop in and try if I am in the area and wanting a bagel, but in no way, shape, or form am I getting up early for these, even if they are underneath the 4th Ave-9th St stations on the F/G/R lines. With that run-on sentence, this bagel report is finished. read more

i've been here a few times and it's...fine. the past couple of times i've come in have been close to 2pm (when they close) and the bagels i've gotten have been borderline stale. if you come in late in the day and you don't get it toasted, that's the risk you run, blah blah blah, i get it, i can't dock them too hard for that. that said, an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese was like $8.50 with tax and (reasonable) tip. that is insane. the bagels might be a lot better if you get them right out of the oven, but there's no world in which they're worth it at that price. read more

Since it was my first time I was unsure what to order, but thanks to the amazing recommendations and even suggesting something I would definitely love just by telling the cashier what I like or generally order in my local bagel store, she recommended a sandwich I never thought of ordering. It's like a Clementine, instead of Gravlox it was substituted with Nova lox and instead of butter I decided to go with jalapeño garlic cream cheese. Definitely loved the sandwich and will definitely make the 25 minute drive just for this sandwich Amazing customer service ! i have eaten bialys my adult life and have found the filling to be the most enjoyable part of the eating experience. i now live in portland,kor and had a yearning for some pastrami and a few bialys so i ordered 6 garlic and 6 onion bialys.....when they arrived i was extremely disappointed. there was literally no filling to speak of ... i wrote to shelsky's and the repied that was normal and that they match any other bialy in nyc....ha ha.... this was from peter shelsky himself.....i would share the email if you are interested. it's a shanda to be cheated out of something you love! read more

I grew up in NY my entire life and now I've been living in FL for the past 13 years. Every time I come back to NY I "need to get my bagel" and usually an extra dozen or two which I bring back to FL to share with friends and colleagues (since New York USUALLY has the best bagels). That was proven wrong this weekend when I went to Shelsky's... what a disappointment The bagel was literally like a half dollar pancake. It wasn't anything great - (to the point where I think I've had better in Florida) which is absurd. The cream cheese was all basically plain, since they apparently forgot how to add the ingredients into the flavored cream cheese. Now for the kicker... overpriced would be an understatement. I have never paid so much for a crap bagel in my life. Not only was the bagel small, not flavored, and a waste of money - the cashier was so rude and unfriendly. Thankfully I no longer live in NY and will NEVER see this place again.. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CRIME SCENE!! read more

Stop by this place when I took the train to acupuncture the other day and was pleasantly surprised. Inside was very clean, and had friendly employees. The menu had quite the assortment for every taste. But when I saw they had a pretzel bagel, I had to try it. Being simple, I went for this unique variety, scooped with cream cheese. I thought about it and canceled the toasting, as the bagel was already soft (according to the guys) so I got a little bonus gift of another bagel for later in my bag, so nice! The taste was wonderful, the signature Brooklyn bagel flavor and texture. I'll check them out again on my next appointment. Thank you guys, it was great. Each time I've gone, my experience was beyond pleasant. I understand that they may be a bit pricey, but I've never had an issue with it, because they've always provided me great product. Fresh, fluffy, filling, carb-y bagels. I mean, always good! I was so happy my first time going. I saw that they had scrapple on their menu, which I hadn't eaten, or even seen of, since childhood! I don't think anyone was as excited as I was to eat pig scraps on a bagel! If you taste it, you'd understand my excitement. And Shelsky's adds maple syrup to theirs! Thee best! Scrapple, with maple syrup, cheddar, a sunny side up egg, on a fresh bagel?! Girl, that's all you need! Trust! And after you try it, send me a "thank you" basket :-). I was also introduced to the Jersey pork roll at Shelsky's. More excitement over pork, I know. Don't judge. Jersey pork roll is processed pork, and when added to their bagels, with egg and cheese, you gon' be ready to tackle ya whole day! It really is delicious! Shelsky's is a fine little take-away spot for your morning breakfast bagel--with an incredible assortment of cream cheese options (horseradish! Sichuan!)--or for an early lunch sandwich. They excel at your traditional New York Jewish deli staples--they feature an excellent pastrami sandwich for one--including an option to get one served on a fried knish with sauerkraut (Lewis's Knish Bomb), which is as decadent and tasty as you could imagine. So, yes... not exactly a health food establishment. And I do wish they had later hours given the number of interesting lunch options on the menu--they were open until 3pm during normal times, and only until 2pm during the pandemic... that's still a little early for a meal like a Knish Bomb for me. But it's a nice place to stop in for a treat, or for a bagel on the way to the train on your morning commute. You know... when we actually have a morning commute again. read more

I'm an avid fan of Shelsky's, and frequent their Court St location pretty frequently. However, my biggest complaint is that only their hot sandwiches are available at the 4th Av location, which is much larger but does not offer indoor seating either. As always, I recommend the Sichuan peppercorn bagel with their Lao Gan Ma flavored schmear (and some sliced avocado!), a combination you will not find elsewhere. I recently tried their version of a Taylor ham+egg+cheese on a roll ($7.49) and it was a little disappointing-- a LOT of bread and very little in between. read more

Quality: The bagels were not that bad, but something has to be said about the value. These are tiny bagels, and they are charging the same price as if it was standard. Value: $5 for a Bagel With Plain Cream Cheese. $14 for a Member Of The Tribe Sandwich. Ambiance: Shelsky's Brooklyn Bagels is located in Park Slope. The small deli and bagel shop has little too it. When you enter you head right to the counter. A few screens show the options, but it may be easier to view the bagels and toppings on display. No seating inside, just a small space for guests to stand and wait. Crowd: Not too bad early on Sunday morning, but imagine it picks up steam on weekends. I love bagels. So much, when I am having a bad day, the first thing I want is a bagel. After extensive train delays, I had to walk to the next train stop and on my way to the F&G train, I saw this bagel shop. My heart soared and I greedily made my way into the store. There was a longish queue where the line while long was moving quickly. While waiting, the person before me was ordering his bagel and he asked the guy to give him and everything bagel that was well covered because his last bagel had nothing on it. That should have been the first clue that I was in for a disappointment. However, I plowed ahead and ordered an everything whole wheat bagel with plain cream cheese and gave my name. I arrived at the cashier and paid. I thought my eyes must have been deceiving me as I paid $4.90 for a single bagel. Nope, ladies and gentlemen, this joint is charging airport bagel prices. Hungrily, I waited for what I assumed the world's best bagel. I retrieved my goodie bag and made my way to work. I ran to my desk with my morning glass of water to devour my bagel. I opened the paper bag and unwrap the waxed paper wrap to...well...disappointment. The bagel was tiny. Even a crappy Dunkin Donut bagel was bigger in size. The bagel barely had any seasoning which made me a bit sad and regrets not mentioning to the order taker like the guy before me. However, the worst part of this bagel was that it was not toasted per my order and there was barely any cream cheese. And the meager amount they did put was super uneven. I saw them scraping the cream cheese metal tin but, I thought they were doing that to add it to the next container and not to be stingy with my bagel. The flavor profile of the bagel was also very lacking, it didn't really taste very fresh either. If you are going to charge almost $5 for a plain bagel, the product should be on point. First time here and we picked up some bagel sandwiches to bring home. I feel obligated to write this review because it was absolutely one of the best bagel-cream cheese-lox sandwiched I have EVER had. This place is not cheap but apparently the food deserves the pricing. It is a small (really small) store designed for order and take out. It was also really busy... I mean there are plenty of bagel stores in Park Slope and this one was packed. Even through it was busy they seemed to move very efficiently and we were in and out quickly The bagel was good (not the best ever, but good) and had the most delicious cream cheese and probably the best lox I have had in a VERY LONG time put together perfectly. They have plenty to choose from and are apparently known for these big delicious tasty over-the-top sandwiches. I must go back and go back soon so this will definitely be the place to stop off and pick up some goodies for the day. I am sure there will be more review to come and I look forward to sharing my new experience here. read more

They should call their toasted bagels warm dough. I asked for a well toasted bagel with butter and received what looked like a bagel with an oily tasteless substance on it and slightly scattered brown edges. I have had bagels from many places but this is bad! Ever the optimist this is the second time since they opened that I try their bagels. It will be the last. One star due to no choice. Oh!
