The recommendations I were given in the menu were spot on and the amount of meat I ate put me in a meat comma for days. Having lived in urban areas and cities my whole life, I charmed by the rustic nature of the place and the sawdust on the floor. Without the sawdust, it would be quite slippery as I discovered when I almost became acquainted with this establishment horizontally. We arrived at 9:30pm and were impressed that they sat us and fed us when they closed at 10pm. The salad comes with romaine lettuce and whatever dressing, then you can top with carrots, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, and/or cabbage. They had a great selection of wine and beer and I decided to go with a Cabernet. Impressed by the 8oz sirloin for $12.99, I chose that topped with mushrooms with baked potato as my side (for $0.99). My husband ordered the 6oz double wrapped in bacon filet mignon. Our steaks came out excellent prepared, juicy and delicious. Lots of flavor and quality beef. Was definitely seasoned to perfection and not too salty, either. For the price we paid and the quality of the beef, I would definitely return. A place recommended by locals as a good spot. I got a recommendation for this place from a friendly South Dakota Highway Patrol State Trooper after he finished writing me a speeding ticket that I totally deserved. They were open late which fit my schedule. The service was outstanding and the mix of classic country music from my college years 1988-1993 brought back lots of memories. The people were as friendly as could be. The only downside was that my steak wasn't cooked as well as I would have liked it. They offered to cook it more but, I was tired and just wanted to finish my meal. If I ever make it back to Pierre, I'd definitely try them again. read more

This is a must stop when you are in Pierre. If you don't get there when they open though be prepared to wait a long time and by get there when it opens I mean 10 minutes early and stand in line at the door. It is all worth it from the sawdust on the floor to the wrap around bar. Have to admire a steak house that has deep fried steak as an appetizer. I was expecting more of a state fair fried Twinkies sort of thing, but instead just got the normal sirloin, cut into chunks, and deep fried in oil instead of broiled on a fire. Same seasonings, and I could not taste the difference between it and my entree. Steaks are excellent, cooked perfectly, and a good cut. The wait staff was moving constantly. The sheer number of customers, though, meant that on the Wednesday night we went a total of 2 hours was spent -- about a 45 minutes waiting to be seated, another half hour waiting between the salad and the main course. Worth the wait on our visit, but you do need to plan for sufficient time to enjoy the meal. The indoor waiting (or the bar waiting) to be seated would be fun all year. I don't know who would wait outside in the winter, but on this balmy summer evening the view of the (flooded) river was spectacular and keep us entertained for most of the wait. If I ever travel through that area again I'll go back. read more

We waited for an hour on a busy Friday night. The food was worth the wait and the bar helped to pass the time. All food we had was great. Every time I am in town with my family from Omaha, Ne we visit the Cattlemans. It's a family tradition, if anything. The nostalgia of the sawdust on the floor, the layout of the building, simplistic ambiance, and the good food all meld together in this place to form a wonderful country restaurant. The steak is really good, the staff is pretty good, and the beer is always cold. Downside is the sides are fairly mediocre such as the salads, mushrooms from a can, and the simple baked potato but that's how things are done in meat/potato country. The food did take quite a while to come out, but starting out with some deep fried green beans made the wait quite tolerable. And then there's the fact that once the food did come out, it was exceptional. My colleagues had the prime rib. I had a 16 ounce sirloin for $18. It came with soup or salad, my choice of potato and texas toast. Really a great deal. It can be pretty hard to hear in this place, but you won't care because you'll be too busy enjoying the incredible steak. The steak is just about as good as anything you'll ever eat. I recommend to get it with the sweet potato as well and slather some butter and brown sugar on it (you won't even want dessert it's so delicious). There is no host/ess to greet those who arrive and we had to stand in line with paying customers to get our name on the wait list. The server was friendly and took good care of us. I ordered the 12 oz Top Sirloin-medium, green beans and salad. The salad is a little iceberg lettuce and they bring a cradle with carrots, cheese, onions and cabbage. The steak arrived and was dry, way over-cooked and tough. The beans were very bland and had no seasoning at all., This was a big disappointment and really not worth the price paid. Located outside of town in Pierre, SD, The Cattleman's Club serves up great food in a fun atmosphere. The Club was packed when we arrived on a Thursday evening during pheasant season. There was a mix of ranchers and hunters, with a couple families thrown in. The last table in the house was open, and we were seated immediately and our server, despite the crowds was there to help us almost instantly. They have a full bar, and a number of mixed drinks are available, along with 4 or 5 beers on tap. Wine prices are reasonable by the glass and bottle, with bottles starting around $15. The menu is mostly steak, and they do it right. The seasoning on the meat was perfect, best out of the three steakhouses I've been to in and around Pierre. The prices are very reasonable on all of their steaks. They serve a dinner salad with a tray which has a tub of onions, green pepper, cheese, and carrots so you can have as much or as little of the condiments as you like. The meat was cooked exactly as ordered, and most of steaks come with your choice of potato and Texas Toast. Our glasses were never empty, and we were given just the right amount of attention. Our waitress was phenomenal in addition to being humorous and friendly (I wish I could remember her name). As for the atmosphere; it was friendly, sort of fast paced and welcoming. When I got my 10 oz prime rib, it was exactly to order and melted like warm butter when I sliced into it. Out of all of my favorite steakhouses and places I've eaten, this is the best prime rib I've ever had! Price wise, the Cattleman's is pretty reasonable and competitive for what you get. As far as cleanliness goes, the place was spotless. I was impressed with the topping tray the waitress brought for the salads. It had different things such as shredded carrots, onions mushrooms, and other stuff you could top your salad with. I will definitely be back and will highly recommend this place to friends that go up to Pierre to fish and hunt. read more

We had come to South Dakota expecting great steaks but always came out disappointed. Cattleman' club (which was recommended to us by a local) completely restored our faith in South Dakotan steak. We got the NY steak and burger with pepperjack cheese and both were exquisite. The steak was really thick and cooked well (to order) and the burger was juicy. The burger did not necessarily look tasty when it came, which was a bit deceiving at first, but it was the best burger I think I have ever had. On top of that, the restaurant is right across from the Missouri River, so you can eat with the beautiful view of rolling hills, as well as take beautiful pictures on the patio during the sunset. The ice cream sundae was a bit small, but after the main course, it didn't really matter. We are definitely going back before we head home; it's hands down our favorite place in South Dakota! read more

We got there at 5:30 and it was packed, that's when we knew we had chosen the right place to eat! The hostess was very friendly and the waitress was the same! The environment was really great to with lots of regulars. My fiancé and I ordered the prime rib and it was the best prime I have ever had. It was done to perfection for both of us, (even though he likes his medium well), but it was amazing and it was very timely as well! We had the sweet potato fries as one of our sides and they where really good too! I'm not sure if they are homemade but they sure taste like it! My fiancé also had the tortilla soup and he hasn't ever had it but he liked it, it was a bit Spicy but still very good! Bad bad bad bad decision. Should've known as soon as the food came out just barely above room temperature. This after about 15 minutes before we were even greeted. Anyways the steak was over seasoned and tough. The sautéed onions were way too soggy and bland. The fat on the prime rib was congealed and tasted like it came straight from the fridge. They checked in with us about 20-30 minutes into the wait to tell us that a five spot was challenging but they'd take care of us. We were seated by 15-20 minutes later. We ordered the porterhouse, prime rib, NY strip and a filet. My party was overjoyed. It lived up to its billing and no doubt helped my credibility! Loved the steaks. Nothing fancy. Cooked perfectly.
