I've played Cave Creek quite a few times. It's kind of my home course, since it is the regulation (par 70 or higher) course that is the closest to where I live. That said, I probably wouldn't play here much if it wasn't so close. First of all, I love the layout of the course itself. There are a few unique holes. The par 4 8th has an approach shot over a huge ravine, while hole 11 is a tight dogleg left over the ravine with a water hazard on the opposite side of the fairway. The greens are some of the most challenging I've ever encountered, so count on a couple of three-putts while you are out here. It also has a great practice facility with three practice greens and a large driving range. However, I have to say that I probably would not ever come here if it wasn't so close to where I live. The layout of the amenities is awful. It's a long walk or ride from the clubhouse to the driving range, and it is a long walk or ride from either to the first hole. The course itself is very difficult to walk since there are huge elevation changes, but that doesn't affect my score. It is annoying to have to leave the driving range to go pick up a rider. Also, the pace of play here is horrendous. It is painfully slow especially during the winter months. Even on a slow day, I can typically play Encanto or Maryvale in 4.5 hours. I have had rounds at Cave Creek push six hours. It is not uncommon to run into 3-4 groups waiting to tee off on holes 3 and 7 (the par 3s on the front nine). I play at Cave Creek a lot because it is a short drive. I've had some great rounds at Cave Creek. Plus, since it seems that the municipal courses in Phoenix are becoming extinct, I try to support those municipal courses as much as possible. With that in mind, if I have a choice between Encanto, Maryvale, or Cave Creek, I will usually opt for either Encanto or Maryvale first. read more

My wife, her father and myself played here yesterday based on a great deal we found through ezlinks. I came into this hoping for the best but sadly, left feeling disappointed. This review is hard to write because the course defiantly had great potential. CONS: 1. No sign of staff anywhere upon arrival. I have played a lot of courses in the greater phoenix area and I can't remember the last time I was greeted by anyone. 2. No help getting from the parking lot to the cart area. This is not normally a big deal, but the parking lot sits about 100 yards from the clubhouse. Was kinda a drag hauling three sets of clubs up. 3. The condition of the cart paths and some of the landscaping on the course was appalling. It would go from bad to wholly crap I should have 4 wheel drive in some areas. In one area there had to be three different ways to go at this intersection with no signage or obvious direction. 4. Have to agree with the other commenter about the old guy. Kinda creepy and not friendly at all. 5. Slow play and no rangers. I know some things are a little nitpicky but this one is accurate and of real concern. The play was slow, I mean real slow especially considering it was a weekday. In addition we didn't come across a single ranger, nope not one. The only person that attempted to get things moving was the bar cart girl...Serious... PROs 1. The greens on this course are challenging and well maintained. 2. The bunkers are in great shape. Nice soft sand. 3. Given the time of year, late May, the course was not dried up or burnt in any noticeable way. I so wish this course could be upgraded. It has so much potential and as far as I can tell, the greens keeper is doing a great job. What this place needs is a good ranger crew, a good manager, a better pro-shop staff and a concrete paver to fix the cart paths. If they could get some money to them and modernize, it would be a home run. read more

This course is A-OK! Paid 20$ for cart with a 8am tee time in the summer! Twosome with no additions and no one behind us. Course could be maintained better but it is still quite fun! Great opportunity to use your driver! Lots of long holes! read more

Nice course, nice staff, good condition, but DO NOT play there if you don't like insanely sloping greens. Not sure why but when I played it every damn green has huge slopes, right up to the holes, many holes you have putts that absolutely cannot be slowed down. Ridiculous, because otherwise it would be great value. read more

The old reliable restaurant is not the same . The prices had gone up by couple of dollars. The eggs very oily . The hash browns were way overcooked. Only decent item was the bacon. Even the toast was overcooked. read more

The front nine is okay.. the back nine is a different story, it is a bit more challenging than the front. Even though it is an older course and somewhat on the shorter side we had a lot of fun at this course. One of the greatest assets of the course besides its convenient location, is the driving range. The driving range is rather large and easy to get onto. Its a fun course we'd play it again. read more

Grass was not well kept and course was tooo smiple. There are better ways to spend money for golfing, dont spend money here.

Not bad golf course...little ruff in spots, but the main problem is the coffee shop is closed. I'm not going to play this summer. next week will be 120 degrees. no thanks...pro shop says it might be open end of the year. read more

Pretty fun course. Very challenging because the hills and gullies. Lots of dirt patches and rocks. I guess that's what you get in the desert. I boogered up my 9-iron a little bit on a rocky patch. Good service. Bathrooms are gross. Had a great time though. read more

They get a 2 because the course was nice and rates are reasonable. The young man at the counter had the personality of a putter. This is were they get a zero. It's 109 degrees they have excessive heat warning on the carts and to stay hydrated. I ask the woman in the snack shop for a cooler of ice (which is available at every course I have ever played) and she says I have to purchase 6-8 beer's in order to get one. If I wanted to get wasted I would have went to the bar instead and spared myself the possibility of heat stroke. Absolutely the most foolish thing I've ever heard. This is great course for beginners and pros alike. It has some challenging holes and some really long ones. The only negative that I saw was that the bunkers were not sand, and didn't play like true bunkers. The greens were pretty fast as well, but certainly playable. I'd recommend this course as a good, inexpensive, place to build your game. Took about about 3 1/2 hours for all 18. read more
