We have been wanting to take a trip to Cave Vineyard for a while! A bit over an hour drive from home, I'd have definitely been more upset at making this drive had we not stopped a couple other places in Ste Genevieve that offered redemption for the experience we had here. The one positive I can mention, is the people are all super nice. Sadly, everything else falls short. The wine is terrible. Not just terrible, but I think that there is something actually wrong with most of them as most are unpleasantly sour and taste of vinegar. I think they must know this too, as these wines are priced 1/2 off for a bottle on their menu. They'd do well just to cut their losses, and dump them. The Grotta Rosa, and the Cave rock were the only two wines that were palatable, and they were just okay. The oddest part of the whole experience of the Cave Vineyard, is in fact the cave. All wine is sampled, and purchased at their tasting room....which is not in the cave. The cave is simply a place that you can sit and drink, and you must either walk to it (which is only maybe a 5-7 minute walk) or they offer to take you there via golf cart. So, you must either purchase all your bottles up front to take with you, or make trips back and forth. You must also head back to the tasting room, to use the bathroom. Went with a friend on a rather rainy fall day, in the midst of COVID season, so probably I am being harsher than I usually would, but I was not blown away by this winery and what it had to offer. I'm sure the views outsider are nice, but we did our flights indoors, which was not that impressive. Flights were $10 (iirc) for a set menu of five (not very generous) pours, either sweet, semi-sweet, or dry. I tried the semi-sweet and my friend the sweet. I was not particularly inclined to buy a whole bottle of anything, which also the bottles seemed pricy for what the wine was, but in order to see the cave, a bottle purchase is required, so I believe my friend wound up with something. The cave, however, is awesome, and I'm sure on a nicer day when I would be inclined to linger, splitting a bottle down there would have been just the ticket. read more

Visited with a group of friends. The flight was fun to do and inexpensive. You can try 5 different wines. They do a spirits tasting as well. You HAVE to purchase a bottle in order to go into the cave. So we got a sweet wine and took it down. It was a decent wine. The cave was neat. I definitely would recommend bringing your own food to this place because food selections is limited, so deduct a star. they sell pizza which is $18 for a small pizza, I got the pepperoni pizza. Tables were not consistently cleaned As for the winery itself I was extremely disappointed. After reading reviews I had high hopes. Upon entry it was very chaotic and unorganized. We entered the first room observing sign on door of only 1 person from your party to enter...well apparently we are the only people to read that. It was extremely crowded and they had 4 staffers behind thee we counter yelling for next person. The " group" in front of me asked for Tasteing and it was yelled if you want a tasting to go into the back room to purchase it. Front is only for bottle purchases! I proceeded to the crowded back room where only 1 staff member was working will a man periodically came running in from the front yelling for something he needed. By the time I finally reached the counter to order I was told my tasting tray could not leave the back room...??? What happened to the only 1 from your party enter? Also in an extremely rude tone I was told you cannot select the wines you wish to taste. You can only choose fry flight, sweet or semi. The only reason I am giving 2 stars is the Biscotti were great! After our tasting we attempted to see the cave but were informed we could not unless we purchased a bottle of wine. So much for the other reviews that said you could. $21 admission to look at a cave...ridiculous!!! In these challenging times, small businesses are struggling POOR rude service cannot be acceptable. I was a bit disappointed in my visit. From the patio, there were amazing views. However, you can't sit on the patio to do a tasting so I missed out on these views. I was on a solo road trip and would have really enjoyed sitting on the patio for a bit while breaking up my drive. The gentleman working the counter when you walked in wasn't the friendliest. He was a bit brisk with the guests walking in. I was instructed to go to a back room to order my tasting. The wines were.....ok. The sweeter wines were decent but I was ok with not making a purchase. The cave is touted as a main attraction but you can only visit it if you purchase a bottle of wine. I must have missed that on the website while planning my trip. Had I read that you had to make a purchase, I would have skipped the winery and spent more time in town or at the other winery I visited. Overall, this was a disappointing stop. read more

There was no one to provide information about the flights of wine and instead a serve your self. Cave with a small stream stream running through or a pavilion overlooking a lake to enjoy the wine & cheese we just bought is a nice way to spend the afternoon with loved ones. (Guests are allowed to bring their own food, but not alcohol- they only sell wine, cheese and crackers) This visit was with my mom and aunt on a Friday afternoon. We did not make friends with the dogs so they did not follow us this time. The walk down to the cave is short (tram only runs Saturday and Sunday). The walk back up the hill can be harder, but there are benches to stop and sit. We were the only ones in the cave and had the babbling brook as background to our conversations. This is just a relaxing way to enjoy a day. I have only heard of the weekends with musicians so I can not comment on that. The friendly lady at the winery even remembered us from the last visit and about my nieces. She also remembered that my mom liked the wine Traminette. Bring your own pic-nik basket and wet ones because there is no restroom down at the cave. read more

Another must stop in SE Missouri. About 15 minutes off the highway through really cool scenery, the winery has $5 tastings as well as the ability to purchase bottles to go. The coolest part is being able to walk down into an actual cave and drink your wine there. There is no fee to go there. Even if you aren't drinking (like us, we were driving) it's worth the stop. WOW! Perfect winery for our afternoon trip as it was our wedding anniversary and just wanted a laid back relaxing time. We did take a round about way of getting to the winery and loved every moment of this adventure! The young lady was perfect as we enjoyed the wine tasting and chose a chilled bottle of wine to take with us for our walk to the cave. It was a hot and humid day yet once you get to the cave ~ PERFECT! Shaded deck and cool breeze in the cave. Made a detour stop here on the way to St. Louis coming from southern Illinois. It's in a lovely setting among the beautiful nature surrounding Ste. Gen County. Did a wine tasting, where they offer to try 5 of their wines. None were very impressive compared to the high quality appellations you can find elsewhere nearby in Southeast MO/Southern IL--the Chambourcin, Norton, and "Cave Rock Off Dry" all tasted flat. Dry Rose was okay but did come off semi-sweet to my taste. The Dry Chardonel was pretty good, lovely medium body and dry with characteristic pear & apple notes, and I asked for a glass--they only do bottles (or at least when I was there). I then asked about the cave--they make a concerned point to advertise their Saltpeter Cave, a short walk downhill from the tasting room. The owner informed me that one may not go down to the cave without a bottle purchase. After leaving, and merely going in the direction of the hill the cave was down to take but a PEEK, the owner physically storms out of the tasting room and yells a reminder that one must purchase a bottle to go to the cave (and apparently, even consider Looking at the cave). Never again, do not recommend. Stick with downtown Ste. Gen, Hermann, or Alto Pass, Cobden, and Makanda in Illinois. read more

My fiancé and I went here for the first time today and it was a great experience. The lady working in the main building was really personable and knowledgable about the area. We did a $5 wine tasting and then purchased a bottle of wine to enjoy do at the cave. You're allowed to purchase your wine and walk down to the cave where there's plenty of tables and chairs to enjoy hanging out. We stopped by here on our way out of town, but it looks like you could do a trolley to the local winery's. I would totally love to come back and experience a tour. read more

Our friends like sweet wines and we like dry wines and since you had to buy a bottle in order to go to the cave, we didn't see the cave. I'm going all out with 5 stars to the Cave Vineyards, this was my second stop on my wine tasting day, and it was my favorite. the main building really wasn't anything to write home about, and although the tasting was a nice experience, and the wine we chose and bought was delightful and full of flavor, the staff really wasn't anything too memorable and really didn't leave an impression. What was impressive about the vineyard was the actual cave on the property, you can enter the cave (with the purchase of a bottle of course) and enjoy a nice bottle of wine and a picnic lunch ( you can bring food with you) in a nice cool cave hidden in the woods. I will be returning to the cave for future visits and to get some more wine, and if your looking for a nice way to spend an afternoon, go to the Cave Vineyards and sit in the cave and you will find your answer... read more

Cave Vineyard was our first stop along the Route du Vin wine trail. We got there around 11 on a Thursday so I was a little surprised to actually see another group there. The vineyard is really nice and spaced out with a covered patio, the tasting room with a couple tables on the porch, and the cave. The tasting room is a little small compared to other wineries, but the bartender was nice and helpful. Oh, there's also a large room in the back with more tables and it overlooks the vats (probably not what they're actually called). The tasting was $5 for five wines plus the glass. I wasn't a huge fan of any of the wines I tried, but after visiting several more wineries I think this wasn't so much a problem with their wines as it is with all MO wines. I think you're welcome to bring your own food, but they also have snacks there (sausage, cheese, crackers, etc.), plus truffles that are sourced from one of the shops in town. The cave was extremely refreshing since it was super hot when I went, but the rule is that you have to buy a bottle of wine in order to go down to the cave. Not sure if they actually enforce that, but to me it was kind of a rip off because I really didn't want any of the wines, but I wanted to see the cave. There are more tables inside where you can relax. Be warned, the walk back up the hill is slightly brutal. read more

The only thing I didn't understand was why the small bakery in back had more room then the tasting/gift shop up front. It was kind of busy, yet there was absolutely nobody in the back space. I really liked the experience. I've never even left a bad review on yelp, but I'm just so disappointed. It's a cute place and it's fun to take your wine into the cave and hang out. The reason for 3 stars - We wanted to support a local biz so we bought a case of wine and a bunch of homemade biscotti. We spent a pretty penny after a mediocre (paid) tasting. Not a big deal since it's a cute place. Until we got the wine home. Turns out a few of our Norton bottles were bad and we thought... ok cool. It happens. Let's just tell them and I'm sure they will refund us. Instead they told us we it's our fault bc we left the wine in the car so it went bad in the heat. It was 60 degrees outside that day and he wine was in the car for an hour so that's just absurd to place blame on your customer. I know for a fact that's not true, because I actually brew my own wine and that's just not how it works. Super annoying. read more

We visited Cave Vineyard as a part of the Route du Vin wine tour this weekend. We go to this event every year which was called the Harvest Festival this year when in the past it was the Wine Diva Weekend. We always look forward to Cave due to their friendly staff, amazing location, and delicious biscotti! We tried a semi dry white paired with a delicious pumpkin cannoli and bought a few biscotti. We were disappointed that they only had a few varieties today but I'm sure it's due to their preparation for the event. I know they offer cave tours but we have never had the time to take one unfortunately. We can't wait to come back next year! read more

My husband, (adult) daughter, and I stopped at the Cave Vineyard after hiking at Hawn State Park on a Monday. Emily was behind the counter and really knew her stuff. She was friendly and helpful while offering both suggestions and a complimentary sample for each of us. Purchasing at least one bottle of wine per 5 people is required to sit in the cave. They do not sell by the glass. We chose two bottles of wine to take to the cave. Emily offered us a clean, wet towel with which to wipe off our table since it is a cave and caves drip. We brought our own charcuterie to enjoy with our wine. Once we descended the steepish paved trail to the cave we chose our table. There are tables further back in the cave all the way up to the wide opening where there is also a deck. We could feel the lower temperature as soon as we took a few steps into the opening. We thoroughly enjoyed our charcuterie and wine while sitting and looking out the cave opening at the beautiful green Missouri forest beyond. For those who are unable to traverse the path down to the cave there are plenty of tables and chairs available on both the porch and the covered pavilion. read more

When we arrived we were told they do not do sangria thru the week or Run the cart. 20+ per bottle and we had walk down to the cave and back up. About a month ago, there was an article in the Post about the Ste. Gen wineries growing up. Unfortunately, I was not aware that this article went out the Friday before my friends and I decided to take a drive down 55 and spend an afternoon at The Cave. Even with the rush and the tourists and the people that had no idea how to behave at a winery, this place was fantastic. The wine is good, not quite as good as some other wines I have had, but easily my favorite of the Ste. Gen wines. But lets be honest, you don't go The Cave for the wine. You go for the cave, duh. After you pick up your wine, take a walk outside, and wait for the golf cart. It will then drive you down a rather steep hill and drop you at the foot of a cave that is eternally cool but not cold. Light, relaxing music is played by bands or solo artists and there are plenty of tables to choose from. You just can't beat the ambiance. Bonus points for letting you bring your own food, unlike many of the wineries. This is a fantastic place for an afternoon with friends, rain or shine, you will enjoy your trip to The Cave. read more

Fairly disappointing experience - after driving to this winery, that touts it's unique location at a cave - only to learn you can only visit the cave with the purchase of a bottle of wine. Definitely, a great stop if you are down in St. Genevieve! I highly recommend this place - it was one of the highlights of my trip down here. The wine is delicious (although some bottles can be a little sweet), the staff is incredibly helpful, and the cave trek was probably the best part of this trip. A typical visit here would be coming up the winery, doing a tasting, buying a bottle, and then maybe hiking down to the cave. One thing that I did not like about this place is that they do charge $5 per tasting, which seemed a little unusual to me. However, their pours are extremely generous. I felt like you were getting a glass to a glass and a half of wine with the tasting. They have a list of ten wines you can choose from and you get to pick five to taste. The Norton and the Cave Rock Off Dry were definitely my two favorite wines. The Norton had a rich oaky flavor, but also a little fruity. The Cave Rock Off Dry was probably the best white wine I have ever had. I normally do not like whites at all, so it says a lot about a bottle considering I really really loved this one. The aroma was incredibly strong (in a good way), and I loved the notes of lychee and rose petal (they described it as orange petal, but idk why I really thought it was rose). This is definitely the perfect bottle for a summer's day. If you like really really really sweet wines, the Traminette had a similar taste, just with tons and tons more sugar. I personally preferred the Cave Rock Off Dry because it was not as overtly sweet. The Cave Rock Red was also popular with our group. I thought it was pretty good, but just not my favorite (again, please take my opinions with a grain of salt - I don't really like overly sweet wines.) Another part I really liked about this vineyard was that the production floor was open (sort of) to the public. They have this balcony like area where you can see the different barrels of wine being made. Susie, the person that was running the whole show the day we came by, did a great job answering all our questions, making recommendations based on our preferences, and explaining the entire process to us. She was extremely knowledgeable and super friendly!!!! A bottle of wine gets you admission into their cave (i.e. Five people can go in for the price of one bottle). This seemed reasonable to me because most of the bottles were around 15-20ish range. This was a perfect area for a lunchtime picnic. Food and non-alcoholic beverages are allowed down into the cave. So, definitely stop by here for lunch. We packed a few sandwiches, cheese, and crackers, and had a great time for lunch. Anyway, I feel like I have gushed and gushed about this place. I heard of the Cave Vineyard about a year ago and have been curious to see what it was all about. I found that out this last Saturday and I'm very glad that I did. We parked in the lot and made our way into he shop to do a little wine tasting. I was a bit shocked that they charged for the wine tasting, but int he grand scheme of things the $5 I gave them for 5 wines was not that expensive and it let me try some wines that I liked, and some that I didn't. The Chambourcin was both our favorites and we grabbed a bottle along with a loaf of bread and some garlic and herb spread and headed down to the cave. We got down to the cave and found the cave filled with people and music. We found a table and sat down and drank our wine while listening to the live music. The wine was good, the bread fresh and still warm and the garlic and herb spread was perfect. If you like people watching this is a great spot to do it. There were several people who had a bit too much wine and that always provides a great show to watch. I had the unforutnate luck of picking a seat that was under a drip of water every few minutes, but aside from that the cave was a perfect place to enjoy a bottle of wine and indulge in some good conversation. I think the cave would be the perfect place to find yourself on a hot summer day as the temperature inside was nice and cool, but not too cold. I would definitely go back for another bottle fo the Chambourcin and the the atmosphere of the cave. This place is worth a quick stop, or maybe a not-so-quick stop, off of the freeway. The beautiful location, cave on premise, knowledgeable staff, and well done wine make it well worth your effort to venture 10-15 minutes off of I-55 when ever you are traveling somewhere. They make about 10 wines, all using their own grapes for the most part (we were told in 2007 they did bring in some sangiovese grapes from CA as a frost killed 60% of their crops). They do dry to semi-sweet to sweet, and while that's quite a range, everything we tasted was really good. I do dry wines and my mom only likes sweet, so between my parents and myself we appreciated every wine they had, one way or the other. The employee pouring knew what each of us liked and didn't steer us wrong. There is a cave directly below the winery that you can visit; the short walk is pretty steep (but has benches along the way!), and on weekends they apparently have a shuttle service. We were told that in the summer there is live music in the cave, which I know is a great respite from southeast Missouri heat and humidity. You are welcome to bring in your own food and soft drinks, but they have cheese, crackers, and whatnots for sale as well. Not surprisingly, their wine is the only alcoholic beverage on site, but with the quality and variety of wines they offer it wouldn't be hard to find one. read more

My wife and I found Cave Winery searching online. The reviews were great and it seemed like a unique winery close to the St. Louis area. The drive is about an hour or hour and a half south of St. Louis, located in a quiet beautiful area of St. Genevieve, MO. Once we arrived, we walked into the main store and were greeted by a friendly worker at the wine bar. She inquired about the type of wines we like and directed us to the Cave Rock Red wine, which was a sweeter full bodied wine. We also were given a sample of the wine for no charge, to make sure we liked it. The wine was delicious and fruity, while reasonably priced at $15 a bottle. In addition, the wine is vinted, cellared, and bottled all on site at this family owned winery. We bought our wine and got a ride by a free shuttle down the 200ft long road to the cave entrance, where we found a table (of which there were plenty) towards the back of the cave. The cave was beautiful and chilly, but we didn't need the jackets we had brought. There was some water flowing from the back of the cave that gave the cave a nice background noise. You are also able to bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages, which we did. After enjoying our wine and food, we decided to walk back up to our car to head home. The walk back up wasn't too bad, but it is up a little bit of a steep hill on asphalt. I would recommend that anyone with health issues or diffulty walking take the shuttle service. All of the staff were very helpful and friendly during our visit. The winery was beautiful with some really great views. It wasn't crowded, even on a holiday weekend. My wife and I really enjoyed our visit and the delicious wine. We would definitely recommend if you're in the area or are looking for a unique winery. read more

I have preface all my MO wine reviews with my snobbery: I like Napa and Sonoma. If you've also been, forget all those experiences and do not attempt to compare and contrast any other wine country with that of Missouri. I'm not being negative, just stating that there is no comparison. It was a beautiful fall day and warmer than I expected so I knew it was going to be busy. The picnic area up by the tasting room was packed and loud with conversation, Bachelorettes, and live music. We ventured into the small tasting area and were greeted by one of the pourers and given a list of options and a briefing on how their tastings work. Pay $5 at the counter behind you, pick 5 and keep your glass. There were some I didn't like and The Chambourcin was a clear winner for me. We grabbed a basket, some amazing fresh baked bread (it was still warm!), some cheese spread and headed down the hill to don-don-don The Cave. It was nothing like I expected, not like I was expecting Batman's driveway or one of those creepy caves I used to spelunk in back in high school. It was open and more unexpectedly hopping. A group of soccer mom's were letting loose, a musician was strumming away on his guitar (complete with speakers and spotlight!). Needless to say the people watching was fantastic. We drank our wine, enjoyed the scenery and just took it all in. I would go back, probably not in the dead of winter when it's got to be freezing down there, but as Josh S pointed out, where else can you sit in a cave enjoying a nice bottle of wine and live music? read more

I received a rare Sunday off and decided to spend it in Ste. Genevieve along the wine trail. Cave Vinyard is very small but charming. With the October air, there was a fire pit built and burning, and pumpkins abound. The tasting is five dollars for five samples and a souvenir glass. I was pleased with the Norton and the Chambourcin. Missouri wines are pretty good, but many are overly sweet. Talk to the employees and they will steer you to what you want. The walk down to the cave is the best part of this winery, in my estimation. The cave is unspectacular, with some picnic tables set up at the mouth. The cave only goes around 100 yards in before it is blocked off with fencing. The best part is the woody surroundings along the path, especially in the autumn. I saw people having lunch down in the cave, but it's a little to dank and cold for me. In all, it's a nice stop along the Route du Vin. read more

SO UNIQUE! I really loved this winery! Things I liked: - The trip from STL to Ste. Gen went by so fast! (I think google maps says it takes 2 hours, it definitely didn't take us that long and felt quite short!) - With purchase of the wine tastings you get a wine glass and can sample up to 5 different wines. - You can bring your own picnic foods/supplies to the cave. You just need to get a bottle of wine for admission down into the cave. - I only tried all the sweet wines, and i think the cave rock red was my favorite. - YOU ARE LITERALLY DRINKING WINE IN A CAVE! HOW COOL! - The woman who drove us down to the cave was just so friendly! Things that I didn't like as much: - You have to pay for wine tastings. I haven't been to that many wineries, so I dont know if this is standard. Good selection of wines. Having wine in a real cave is pretty cool (go Missouri!). They were very accommodating of our large group and offered golf cart transport down the walkway to the cave for my friend on crutches and for the ladies with heels. read more
