The worst new station that I used to live. I'm constantly catching them in lies and they biased, in which shows how they report a segment. CBS News used to be my number one go to station for information. Not only do I not trust, but in general a report or anchor needs to be biased when reporting the news. Kcal news in the evening/night is ok. It's the morning anchors that really laugh and play way too much. When people wake up in the morning for Los Angeles news, we want to hear the news. Well I do realize that you are VERY busy. But in the NOT so olden days your transparency with the public was important to you. Now there's NOT even a phone number where you could speak live with a person for a HOT STORY. Now ONLY a message, and NO BODY ever gets back with you ???? Very very STRANGE. I called when your story on Elon Musk and his famous Chainsaw on stage story, but NO ONE ever noticed or mentioned "the web address" that was cleverly engraved or laser cut on the chain guide. I love watching KCAL news at 5pm. But the person at assignment desk is painful to watch. Between his dress code and speeding through the news and tripping all over his words, it's so difficult to understand him. His name starts with "M" and I will leave it there. He thinks he's a know it all about crime and fire updates. He's not a likable person. Ugh! He thinks he knows everything. Please can we change the format or do some additional training. It's truly painful to watch that assignment desk update. My friends and I joke that he must be related to someone high up and that's how he got the job because other than that, my question is WHY!? Whoever came up with it should be demoted, I don't turn into the news to listen to someone taking away from the real reporters with their opinion and overview. I used to watch Jeff and Suzy every night, now they have this clown from the assignment desk Mike something with breaking news, GET RID OF THIS GUY, what the heck KCAL, Jeff and Suzy is all you need they have awesome chemistry together they make us laugh and make the news bearable when times of so much negativity in the world. My husband and I watch the 8pm broadcast and have been complaining for a while about its format. Having been in television for 20 years and a former college instructor of Multi-camera Studio Operations /Directing classes, I cringe at the opening with this "walk about" all the talent do with the camera following. It is really unnecessary and degrades serious news formats. Then the anchors seem to need "help" by tossing a story to the desk several times during the broadcast. The weather doesn't need as much teasing as it gets and what happened to mentioning sports? I think if you're going to compete for viewership, you need to be mindful of time. Too much teasing, splitting up stories between anchors and desk and ET style production isn't going to retain viewers. read more

This channel is one sided ( Liberal) and they don't give you the facts, actually they change the narrative to make the outcome of the story how THEY want you to think. If you have ever seen the way CNN or MSNBC do this well this is what KCAL does also. Good God!! Who decided to put that guy, Mike Rogers, in front of the camera? Nice guy, but he has poor presentation. I'm sorry, but Mike Rodgers has got to go! He is completely unprofessional and dresses far too casually for his role. Someone else called him a slop and I have to agree! Is he even qualified? How did he get this job? It screams nepo-baby or someone doing a favor for a friend's son or something like that. One wonders if he's eating burgers and fries in between segments... So gross! Plus, he is WAY too prominent! wtf? If you are going to make such a shocking change to a beloved newscast, begin to socialize it slowly. He was just suddenly thrown on here with the new set and let loose! He comes across as almost feral. He is cavalier and nonchalant and is singlehandedly devaluing the Kcal9 news brand. The broadcast is almost unwatchable now. The cheesy "breaking news" music trivializes the newscast and gives off a tacky, tabloid feel. Someone else said the broadcast is just like TMZ and that's exactly what I said to my husband last night! I think SNL has done skits like this with almost the same music. I can't imagine that the news anchors enjoy these changes. In fact, it looks like there is absolutely no chemistry between them and Mike Rodgers. It is truly cringeworthy to watch. Please, please, please dump this dude. I feel so strongly about this that I scrounged around for where to comment. The new KCAL NEWS changes are completely horrible. That "News Desk" is just unbearable and a disaster to watch. I tried and tried but just couldn't. If this assignment desk was their so called "Differentiator" among news outlets, it did the total opposite for me. I always watch KCAL 9 news. When KCAL 9 became KCAL News, have you noticed that they talk so fast when giving report! You added more sections in your reporting including THE Desk. The male reporter (editor?) talked so fast and it's difficult to follow. Why the rush in giving the report? Your old set up is better than what you have now. You can change your set up but the reporting should be of the same speed. Every reporter talks very fast and like shouting already. It sounds so noisy! Why the rush in reporting? A lot of people have noticed this change. Please talk normally when giving report on TV. Even Martina the weather girl who talked slow now talks so fast and loud! Jeff Vaughn's tone is still the same which I like but the rest, too loud! The audience wants to relax and listen to the news not to watch a horse race. Pls consider all the reviews! read more

Somewhat unwatchable morning show. Jamie Yuccas is an accomplished CBS Network reporter/anchor. She is very good and can be fun. However this is not a fun feel good morning show. Everyone with the exception of Kalyna Astrinos and Chris Holmstrom look uncomfortable on the set. The segment where they all get together in director chairs to chat is cringeworthy. There is no connection between the anchors. Watching the 4 anchors chat reminds me of the view Chick fest on ABC. They need to lighten up the newscast. Use Chris Holmstrom and Kalyna Astrinos in the later hours more. I know male viewership is low in the mornings but throw us Chris more often. I have moved back to fox 11 where they give you a happy newscast without forced chat. read more

The worst morning news eve! I would just change the channel but this is the only morning news station I get at the moment. Most of the time they are not even looking forward at the cameras but one another instead - I feel like I'm sitting listening to their personal conversations there is Way too much talking, the people at the desk continue to talk over another, random laughing and personal commentary that interferes with wha t is being said... I like catching local news updates but don't like The Desk format with a closeup of an unprofessionally dressed assignment editor, especially one who comes across as a know-it-all, talking over the anchors & even helicopter personnel during pursuits. As I saw many similar reviews the better part of a year ago, instead of posting on Yelp at the time, I emailed KCal9 to ensure management was aware of the poor ratings & that the new The Desk format was not well received. However, I see nothing has changed. But to end on a positive note, I believe Chauncey Glover is an outstanding addition, very professional & impeccably dressed! read more

so angry with Breaking News interrupting regular programming. While I am happy they caught the criminals responsible for the shooting spree, it should have been part of the evening news. Then every police official involved had to blah, blah, blah and verbally pat each other in the back. No other channel ( 2, 4,5,7,11) carried this. My regular program was already moved from 2 to 9 to make way for coverage of European sports. Loyal viewers are not respected. read more

What is with this mike Rodgers reports format? For 1 he's too close to the camera at points i can see lint or frayed threads on his wardrobe. Which is already not up to par for news people on air. Also he might be better on radio. He says nothing informative and usually just repeats obvious facts that the clip showed . Im switching to ch 5 if that segment continues. please review using Mike Rogers. the consultants don't know everything. While I often have no issue with WHAT he relates, he speaks SO FAST! like he's only got seconds to say what he wants. SLOW DOWN!!! and back off from the camera. Waaay too close. And I'm sure the consultants say to wear casual clothes. I watched Kcal news for years now. It was my favorite local news. Then a few months ago they came up with a new format, which basically consists of a new "theme song" and something that goes across the screen with "Breaking News" on it. Nothing else really different, EXCEPT for the fact that someone decided that they would interrupt the news every 10 minutes or so and go to "Mike Rogers", an unkept looking guy who looks like he should be sitting home drinking a few beers and eating popcorn while watching the Sunday football games. He often wears a yellowed from age T-shirt under his overly causal outer attire. What were they thinking. They go out of their way to have all of their on the air staff wearing nice clothes and nicely groomed, as do most news shows. Then the show keeps interrupting to put this slob center stage. It's as if they take a few lines of the report of the anchor or on-scene reporter, and give those lines for Rogers to say. I know my review is just about appearances but appearances seem to be important to news shows, based on the attire of the male and female anchors, and weather people. We are used to that, so why shock us every 10 minutes with this guy who looks completely out of place and serves no purpose. I think they have really ruined this newscast making it unpleasant to watch. I still watch. from time to time because they are the only game in town at 8pm. But tiring of it very fast. Somebody really needs to sit down and decide if this guy really adds any value to the program. If so, then at least get him some clean t-shirts. read more

I do not like the change. The new KCAL without the 9. I also don't like the new anchors. In the morning,I actually miss Chris holmstrom sitting at the desk and the other ladies along with him. These two new ladies that are taking the spotlight in the morning, specially the one with the short blonde "Karen" hair is not cutting it for me. Kcal 9 now lost its feel. Now it feels like an East or Southern coast news station instead of a Southern California station. Definitely has an East coast feel. I do not agree with the change nor the new KCAL name. One last thing, the segment with Mark Lui, well things are hardly breaking news. A tree falling isn't breaking news. A tree falling on an important figure's car and or vicinity IS breaking news. My husband & I are so frustrated with the new format and the new Mike at the desk guy! The people are standing up (weird) and so now we have to see their full weird outfits and see how uncomfortable they look. There are strange dots and circles going in the background while the reporters are trying to talk. It is impossible to pay attention with these constant distractions going on. First, I watch KCAL everyday and really do like and enjoy the news anchors, field reporters and many behind the scenes. Second, I realize change does need to be made because this news market is highly competitive. The NEW early morning news team is good and informatIve. Third, one area which is confusing is during the nightly news which of course has anchors but then cuts away repeatedly to a " Mike Rogers " who is an Assignment Editor. If there is breaking news then why can't the anchors report it( like they always have) instead of going to a " very close up view" of his face and reporting on something the anchors can easily do. I hate to say it but his shirts don't look appropriate if reporting in front of the camera. Fourth, I am sure his job is important but why not just keep him behind the scene , instead of putting him in front of the camera attempting to in some regards anchor the news. Thx! read more
