Professor Devin was great and my first time I showed up for what I didn't realize was an intermediate/advanced class. Everyone in the class was great. I rolled with three different people, all of whom could have smashed me if they wanted to, but they worked with my lack of training. They didn't go "easy" on me but tempered their responses. STA has a fantastic kids program. I've watched the kids rolling before my class starts and they are enthusiastic and obviously having fun. I highly recommend STA.

To give you some perspective I was member for about 5 months and while not very flashy it does get the job done if you're looking for a no-frills sort of place to work out. I'd say the two most attractive aspects of it are the location (right in the heart of downtown and they have parking) and the price (very reasonable for month to month members). Both of these factored in heavily to me deciding to join. Once you're actually in the gym they'll pretty much have everything you're looking for plus a few bonuses. They have your standard assortment of free weights, machines and cardio. In addition, they have a basketball court, spinning room and pool. So it's not that they are lacking anything, it's more like things aren't as great as they seem at first. Once you start looking below the surface is when you start coming up with issues. I'll start with the basketball court/setup. The court and goals are fine. But there is legitimately only one decent basketball worth playing with. If someone has that then you're kind of out of luck and will have to grab some of the tatter crappy ones. The cardio room is loaded with machines but the electronics on so many of them are broken that it's pretty depressing. There are a few TVs but you have to get the employee to change the channel for you which a pain. They also don't let you keep the remote so there is no channel surfing. You better know what you want to watch. There also isn't any audio for the TVs. There are subtitles but if that isn't your thing then I'd suggest downloading the Tunity ap so you can stream the audio in. The bathroom and locker room just aren't 360's strong point. It's rather dated and people are constantly leaving stuff and not cleaning up after themselves. One of my biggest gripes was that, while part of the gym is open 24 hours a day, the other parts were consistently not open when they should have been. To elaborate, you always have access to the main floor weights and cardio. But the second floor and pool are locked and only open when there is an employee present. I seriously lost count of how many times these should have been open but no employee showed up. Again, pluses and minuses. And if was I was still in CDA I would probably still be a member so it gets 3 stars. You'll be able to get in a decent workout. Just know what you're getting into.

The dojo offers Aikido, a non-competitive, martial art which is easier for beginners and kids. No pressure to compete. They offer different level classes throughout the week, so it's easier to fit into schedules and opportunities to advance up in the program. They teach the techniques clearly and know how to work with children in a way that keeps them motivated and engaged. In addition to regular training, the gym often organizes special events like Parent Night Out, where kids can come, spend time together, and have a lot of fun. My children started jiu-jitsu with no prior experience at all, and now they have already earned their first stripes on their belts. It is clear to see the progress they have made thanks to the coaches' work. This creates a great sense of community and makes the experience even more special for families. I also attend the adult jiu-jitsu classes. The training sessions are intense and very productive. We spend a lot of time working on technique and practical application. After every class, I feel like I could wring out my shirt -- that's how hard we train! It's challenging, but in the best possible way. I am very grateful to Professor Sam for creating such an amazing place and for building a team of coaches who create a truly family-like atmosphere. I have been trying to get into yoga for years and have never found a space I enjoy. The Mat is the first studio where I want to go back. The floors are great for me because they are covered in a firm mat. This way the floors a firm enough to support you through poses, but give a little to help my knees and other sensitive areas like my tail bone. The studio has accessories like blocks and straps available so that you don't need to bring them. The cleaning solution smells wonderful, like eucalyptus, so the studio smells more like a spa and less like a gym. They have multiple classes including restorative, power, and intro to yoga. The studio offers "hot yoga", but not Bikhram hot. This is great because it keeps my muscles warm without making me sick with heat. It is a small studio, so the instructors are able to give each student personal attention. The instructors watch your form, and help motivate you to move on to the next level when you are ready. They also support beginners and those of us with strength or flexibility limitations with the modified poses and remind the class that yoga is a personal practice, not a competition. This studio is great for all levels, and the different classes allow you to relax or get a butt kicking workout. The students are all very friendly as well, and I don't not feel judged. It is a welcoming environment and I actually enjoy yoga finally.
