I've contacted this company three times this year, and each interaction with their front desk representative, Tawana, has been short and dismissive. I gave the benefit of the doubt the first two times - she may be a family hire. The third interaction made it impossible to continue working with them. On 5/13/26, a technician came to my home through my home warranty company and confirmed my HVAC unit was not functioning. He identified a refrigerant line that needed replacement and told me he would address it immediately. I followed up on 5/18/26 to confirm the status. Tawana - who I'm being generous by calling an administrator - told me she had spoken to the technician and that the unit was working fine, and suggested I call my home warranty company if I had concerns. I pushed back because that was completely not true. I think I would know if my AC unit is working on an 95 degree day. So I asked specifically whether she had spoken to the technician who visited my home. She confirmed she had. When I continued to question the accuracy of that, she responded with clear frustration and said, "Ma'am do you want us to come to your property or not?" At that point I responded with an expletive, because frankly she had earned it. She hung up. Next, I called the technician (Stacey) directly. He confirmed he had entered the wrong information into the work order and that he had not spoken to Tawana. She had relayed inaccurate information and handled my follow-up with hostility instead of accountability. Her low effort doesn't begin to cover it. After that, my home warranty company attempted to reach Ceceil & Sons twice. No one answered the first time. The second time, Tawana told them that Cecil & Sons would not be returning to my home. Shocker - petty & unprofessional. The technician himself was professional and honest. The problem is entirely with how this company handles customer communication when something goes wrong - and that starts and ends with their incompetent front desk. We had an extremely frustrating experience with our HVAC system until Cecil & Sons came to the rescue. Our air conditioning unit went out in April and was out of service for about a month. Initially, our home warranty company, American Home Shield, assigned the claim to Bennett Air. They came out, diagnosed the problem as a faulty reversing valve, and ordered the part. About a week later, they returned to replace it, but after working on our unit for nearly three hours, they told us the replacement part was defective and that they would need to order another one. Then, to our surprise, we received another invoice from Bennett Air stating that our system now required approximately $4,000 worth of additional work. What started as "we just need to reorder a part" suddenly turned into thousands of dollars in repairs. At that point, I no longer felt comfortable with them working on our system and requested a second opinion through our home warranty company, which was unfortunately a difficult process. Before that second opinion was scheduled, we paid out of pocket for an independent assessment from Booth Air HVAC. Their technician reviewed the work Bennett Air had performed and noted concerns, including wiring that appeared to have been disturbed and work that did not look properly completed. He also believed the issue was likely the compressor, not the reversing valve. Our home warranty company eventually assigned the second opinion to Cecil & Sons. I admit I was a little nervous after reading some online reviews, but I decided to give them a chance--and I'm so glad I did. Robert from Cecil & Sons came out promptly, performed a thorough assessment, and also believed the compressor was the problem. The necessary parts were ordered, and he returned to begin the repair. When the system still wasn't operating correctly, he didn't simply leave or guess at the problem. Instead, he remained committed to finding the root cause and even called in another technician, Stacy, to assist. Together, they identified the actual issue, ordered the correct part, and had it delivered quickly. When Stacy returned to complete the repair, our HVAC system was finally fixed. It's now been about a month, and our air conditioning has continued to work perfectly, blowing cold air without any issues. I have to give a huge shout-out to Cecil & Sons for their professionalism, persistence, and honesty. They took the time to diagnose the problem correctly instead of pushing thousands of dollars in questionable repairs. If we had continued with Bennett Air, I truly don't know how much money we would have spent or whether our system would even be working today. Very poor performance/service! The tech came out to address a leak. He stopped the leak, cranked up my thermostat to over 80 degrees and left. About 30mins later, my basement is filled with of fumes, the furnace is on BUT no heat is generated. I called the tech to tell him about the fumes and no heat. His response was to let the unit CONTINUE to run for another 2hrs and it should heat up. WHAT...I have a basement full of fumes and that's the guidance. He asked if the unit had been turned on prior to his visit and it had. It was working fine prior to the leak. For some reason, I would think the tech should have made sure the furnace was working properly, at the very minimum - before leaving. And to tell a customer to let it run for 2 hrs. I loved that I was dealing directly with the company that was going to actually do the work. The technician was invested in getting the work done properly and securing the proper parts. He spoke to me and explained in detail what needed to be done and what was actually wrong with my system. He made it understandable in layman terms. read more

I contacted Cecil & Sons Air Conditioning because my system stopped cooling. When the technician arrived, he didn't have his tools and asked to borrow mine. I allowed it, hoping he could fix the issue. During his inspection, he found a leak in the condenser coil and said a screw had punctured it. I agreed after seeing it myself. However, when I called my home warranty company, they said the claim was denied for "misuse." That made no sense since only licensed technicians -- including those from Cecil & Sons -- have ever worked on this unit. This isn't the first time this company has blamed me, the homeowner, instead of taking responsibility or communicating honestly with the warranty provider. It seems they'd rather label issues as "misuse" to get money directly from customers instead of working through the warranty process. If you ever have a home warranty company try to send Cecil & Sons to your property, refuse the service and request another contractor. Their lack of integrity, accountability, and professionalism is unacceptable. read more

If you're an AHS customer- you're better off finding your own contractor and paying out of pocket regardless of cost. If you're a regular customer- find literally anyone else to do your work. If you're here because you also ran into trouble with this company and AHS, I've filed complaints with the BBB, DISB and the DC attorney general against AHS as a result of the mess Cecil caused if you'd like to submit your complaints as well. On 2/3/26 my HVAC system stopped working, I submitted a request for service with AHS and on 2/4 got a technician named Jeff to come from Cecil and check it out. He said he couldn't run diagnostics due to ice and snow on the roof where my HVAC is located which was fair enough. He said company would follow up when the weather got better- they never did. I requested a follow up visit that occurred around 2/16 and a technician named Justin came and ran diagnostics and said this was a total replacement scenario. The replacement for my condenser unit and air handler got approved by AHS with an out of pocket cost to paid to Cecil of ~$3000 that I accepted. It took 7+ days of follow up calls to Cecil (always a rude and hard to reach admin woman named Tawana) to get an installation date scheduled, during which time I repeatedly mentioned the need for a crane and permitting and neighbors having difficulty with their installations due to street parking, trees and power lines on our street. All my concerns were waived off. I asked repeatedly to be sent an invoice for the cost of installation and never got sent anything. I only got sent a bill for which I paid a deposit of $1575 on 3/16 and 3/18 was the original installation date. The crane was scheduled from 6-9am and the technician (Jeff, again) came so late that he missed the crane window- something he admitted on the phone to my partner- and therefore the installation did not happen. He lied to me on the phone saying the actual reason installation couldn't occur was because of the trees and power lines (that I already informed them of) and that he had been on site since 7am trying to rectify this situation. I know this to be a lie because he also called my partner at 7:40am to say he was 45 min away and didn't call back again until past 9am. He then proceeded to tell me that since he didn't need to do my installation, he'd be enjoying a fishing day and he'd consider calling the company for a resolution after he finished. I believe he did actually get fired for this level of egregious unprofessionalism. I escalated the situation through Tawana to the company owner, Stacey. To his credit, Stacey called me later that day to say he would personally be taking care of my installation moving forward. However, he mentioned that the crane company, in their anger at Jeff for wasting their time, was insisting on a total street closure permit that would cost ME an additional $2,500 and take up to 3 weeks to obtain from the city. This was a cost he would not comp even though it was a direct result of his employee's failure. He said he'd try an alternative method that didn't involve the crane instead, though, and we scheduled a new installation date of 3/25. On 3/24 he texted me to say the installation could not happen because AHS had sent them the wrong equipment. This is equipment that had been in their warehouse for 2 weeks at this point and even got driven all the way to my property for the first failed installation attempt - and no one had even opened the box to check it. Had the first installation gone to plan, they would have literally installed the wrong equipment in my home. After that, Stacey came to actually see my property for the first time on 3/25 instead. He was the first person to turn on the auxiliary emergency heat for us. We had been without heat for close to 2 months at that point in the coldest DC winter in decades, two of his technicians had already been on the property and they either didn't know how or didn't care to turn on back up heating. Stacey said the only path forward was paying the additional 2.5k for street closure permitting and crane for installation. At that point, 3/30, I terminated my agreement with this company and proceeded with another (who literally took 5 business days between initial coming to give an estimate to installation- would've been less if not for weather). Stacey said his office would process a refund of my initial deposit on that date and I spent the next 2 weeks following up about the money. Tawana told me repeatedly that the refund had been processed but could not produce any proof of refund records for me to see despite asking multiple times. I ended up having to create a dispute with my credit card company instead to get my money back. In all, Cecil's complete lack of professionalism and standards of conduct cost me a full 2 months of headache and stress and I've genuinely never encountered a small business that displays this level of disorganization. Technician who came to my home today was supposed to be doing a leak sealant for my AC that has a leak , instead he said my freon is low, which is a lie cause about 2 weeks and half ago this company had someone else come out and He said I needed 9 pounds of Freon, which he did. I was told by the person who own/runs this company that I had to wait 14 days to be approve for some leak sealant , which did not happen, the technician they sent out today was so unprofessional , he had the nerve to say to me " do you guys put your own Freon into Ac unit , and he start talking about my AC unit is outdated I need new one, the issue have yet to fix but he making those unprofessional and with no work ethics in his system. I would strongly advise against recommending this company. Over the past seven months, they have made "multiple repairs" on my HVAC system, yet it remains non-functional. After their most recent repair, my unit overheated and caused a fire in my home. Both the fire and police reports confirmed that the HVAC unit was the source of the fire. Initially, the company offered to replace the heat pump for $1,420, but after I accepted the offer--documented through American Home Shield--they suddenly demanded $3,300 instead. Despite multiple attempts to resolve the issue and speak with the owner, I've been unsuccessful. As a result, I will pursue this matter through legal channels and will be reporting this to the DCRA and the Mayor's Office to prevent them from scamming other customers and causing the kind of suffering my grandmother has endured, with a non-functional HVAC unit since February. read more

The first contractor had been non-responsive and the job had been delayed for several months. Once Cecil and Sons became involved the job was completed in days. Stacy Holt (leading technician) was extremely professional and pleasant to work with. He responded to any questions and was available during the entire process. He provided updates and always followed up on any concerns. The technicians were pleasant, showed up on time, kept me informed of the progress and once the work was completed, they took the time to walk me through the new equipment. I didn't even get a chance to hire them, went through my home warranty company and was told I would be scheduled the day after because my heat went out, with my kids being in the home in the middle of winter! I would like to say the company is a good company, but I couldn't get passed the nasty, disrespectful customer service rep that answers the phone to schedule appts! Spoke with her the same day and she basically told me that's she's "sorry" to hear, but if I believed it was an emergency and wanted someone to come out on their day off, it would be $150/hr otherwise the appt would be Monday 1-5pm, ok fine! Monday comes along and she calls at 3pm saying " I would like to schedule someone to come out on Tuesday, the following day"! Lady are you crazy when I just told you my kids are freezing and this is an emergency! "Oh I'm sorry but you're not on the schedule so I don't know what to tell you"! Man people, especially our African American people unfortunately are so nasty, you try to support and you get this type of response, it sucks! But unfortunately as well, Cecil and Son because of your customer service rep, you won't get my business and if you don't work on changing that, I'm sure a lot of others will do the same! Update, after my wife went off on social media, she got in contact with Stacey, the owner and he went over and beyond with helping and assisting with the issue, sent Hugo out and he repaired my heat within literally 5 mins! The worst. They were contracted through my American Home Shield Home Warrantee. My HVAC unit was tripping the breaker intermittently. They couldn't give me an appointment for a couple days out, so I had reset the breaker to have cool air until then. Because it wasn't tripped and was running when the technician got there, he said he couldn't do anything and just left. Didn't touch it or do any diagnostics at all. So, when it happened again, I called them back and was told they couldn't schedule me for another 2 days. So, I was supposed to just sit in a hot house? No thanks. I called AHS and asked them give me a different contractor. Update to Cecil and Son comment. Another contractor came out, DID do a diagnostic and fixed the issue in about an hour. My second tech made things better. He recommended a furnace cleaning, which I promptly scheduled and he even went as far as cleaning a sensor to assist with my problem. Guess what- my heat has been working since and my furnace cleaning/duct appointment isn't for another few weeks. Going that extra mile the first time could've prevented my children having to experience living without heat for almost two plus weeks. I cant provide more than 3 stars because of my initial experience and encountering poor customer service more than once with the call centers. I wish I knew the second tech's name, but thank you. If I could give this company negative stars, I would. This is by far the worst company I had the displeasure of seeking services from due to my horrible home insurance warranty company (American Home Shields). They misdiagnosed my AC issues, forced freon on me, did not even let my warranty company (who hired them as vendors) know the diagnosis. They made me pay $600 and didn't even check to see if my unit was working. My tenants then told me it was not and they came back with another diagnosis. One of their technicians, who was honest and told me the real issue (a evap coil was broken), which often shows that the system is low on freon. He told me I should seek a refund. Cecil and Sons refused to give me a refund although acknowledging they didn't send in a diagnosis to my warranty company. This caused my tenants to wait one month without repairs. I am not having problems trying to get my warranty company to reimburse me. They are now spinning the issue to seem like I would have needed freon all along, so now my warranty company won't even reimburse me. I am going to have to replace the whole unit now. I WARN EVERYONE, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY FOR ANYTHING. Also, get out of American home shield warranty company contract if you have one!!! I will definitely be filing a complaint with the city and pursuing legal action against both unless the come up with a resolution. read more

My ac/furnace was not turning on. I thought it was my thermostat. I'm not an expert. I contacted my home warranty company, AHS. Many of us have love hate relationships with AHS. I have had excellent companies assigned to me and others that are simply dreadful like LIVEGREEN whom I have forbidden AHS to assign to any problems at my home ever again. Today was my first experience with Cecil and Sons Heating and Cooling. My appointment was for the afternoon (1-5). I got a call that they could come earlier if I liked and so they did. They arrived within 15 minutes of that call. They were warm and friendly and while we enjoyed a friendly first exchange, Justin (the lead technician) and his associate went right to work accessing my problem, which turned out not to be the thermostat. My house began to immediately cool down. Justin explained what my problem had been and what he had done in addition to sharing that Cecil and Sons is a family owned business. I had a wonderful experience. Made my day! I sat sipping my ice tea later in the day in my cool house trying to imagine what it's going to be like at the family gathering next week when all the family (from the 13 siblings of the line above Justin) gathers to celebrate complete with fireworks. Not often you get all of the best in one visit. Thank you Cecil and Sons and Robbie and Justin. I read the reviews and was very nervous before the Tech arrived. So, I tried to prepare myself for the worse. My expectations were pleasantly met with this service call. My tech, Casey called when he was on the way and arrived during the appointment window. I was impressed with the tech because he was so young and very knowledgeable about the issue with the a/c. If I could give this company 0 stars I would. AHS sent this company to repair my ac unit. My first inclination that this business was no good was when I received a call from Cecil & Sons to set up an appointment. The girl (who never provided her name) told me someone would be by between 1-5pm but never asked me what problem I was experiencing with my unit. How can someone come prepared to repair something without knowing what the problem is? The technician, Casey, arrived and said my problem was a bad capacitor. He replaced it and said it'll take a few hours for the house to cool down which is understandable. Later in the evening the temperature on my thermostat was still reading 80 degrees so I called AHS and they put in a recall ticket and suggested that I also call Cecil & Sons in the morning to ensure a same day appointment since it was late and they probably wouldn't see the ticket until later in the morning. The next morning I call Cecil & Sons. I speak to a woman named Tawanna and she says they can't get someone out until the next day. I explain to her that I need someone out today to fix a problem that should've been fixed yesterday and by the way it's 90+ degrees outside and I have a small child. She then says someone will be out between 1-5pm that day. Once again, I leave work early to be home when someone arrives to repair only this time no one ever showed up. I'm so livid that I don't even want to deal with them again so I call AHS and ask that they send someone else. The 2nd company ultimately fixed my problem. While the issue was the capacitor, Casey had wired it incorrectly which was why my house never cooled down. They also saw that I was low on refrigerant. Now my ac is functioning properly thanks to United Air Temp. Between the incompetence and the poor customer service, not to mention the other reviews here, it's a wonder Cecil & Sons is still in business. If your home warranty company tries to send this company to your house, do yourself a favor and request someone else. Dealing with them was a nightmare! read more

This was an American Home Shield (AHS) referral nightmare to find out the source of a pool of water in my basement. These guys were dispatched after the plumber they sent said the source of the leak was not the water heater but the AC Unit. In comes Cecil and Sons, well one of the sons, he does a 20 minute inspection of the unit, removes the covers checks the condensation lines, and inspects the area around the blower, and that part seems fine and dandy until he says "Its not the HVAC unit but and its the water heater." With rag in one hand he leans on the drainage valve with the other and before you can blink out goes the entire contents of the water heater onto the floor, into the HVAC and the drywall. "I've never had this happen to me before." Me neither. Then he gets on the phone with AHS gives them a run down of what happened and admits to breaking it then leaves saying a plumber will be out. Later that day, the plumber is there takes a 5 minute look at it then says they can't fix and calls AHS for additional guidance. NO CAN DO a replacement without approval even if our guys cause the problem. This back and forth of phone calls, tracking people, getting statements, and checking status goes on for 24 hours with ,get this, the punchline being [AHS] "We are not responsible because the tech wasn't authorized to touch the hot water heater. This is secondary damages and you have to go through their company to get money to take care of this." Who can remember going to store and seeing a sign that saying "You break, you buy!!"? The Cecil and sons, tech did take responsibility by starting the insurance claim but that really where that stopped. They offered to install a water heater but only after we would go in 1/2 of the cost. WHY would ANYONE do that?! By luck, we had a probable solution with a spare hotwater heater that needed research into conversion to natural gas. NO CAN DO until Monday. That would be 6 days without hotwater. Six days where the baby and teenager aren't able to be properly bathed. So to a big, "Methinks not" to you for have no empathy and no sense of professionalism to take full responsibility in a manner that is urgent especially when YOU were the cause. If you are a AHS victim, and these guys are dispached to you. Ask for another company. read more

THE WORST COMPANY EVER! My home warranty AHS contract this company out to fix my heat almost 2 weeks ago and after the initial diagnosis which was my gas valve needed to be replaced they have refused to answer emails or calls from me or AHS. However, AHS doesn't get a pass either because it seems that they have known this about this company for some time and they still have them as a contractor. I highly suggest that you ran not walk by Cecil and Sons and American Hone Shield. They two together is a piss poor combination. read more

Cecil and Sons and combination American Home Sheild are terrible. My family has been without heat for 3 weeks now. Cecil and sons prolonged process to condemn our furnace after coming out 11/14 Cecil himself told us to lie to AHS and state flames were coming g out of furnace i n order to get new furnaces e. NOW when furnace comes in they want money from AHS and additional $1100 from us. I don't even want to give them 1 star but in order to write reviews you have to...they are terrible take your business elsewhere. Please !!! read more

The second technician he sent was extremely professional and walked me through everything when he was finished.
