This is an old time motor hotel (motel) located on the main drag, just up the hill from Shepler's Ferry. It transported me back to family vacations in the 1960s, before interstates and box hotels were pervasive. On first sight, one might understandably move on. Rust on the outside of the motel room doors might have suggested poor upkeep. But we already had reservations and the rust was a false flag. Check-in was quick. The owner called us as we approached the Mackinac bridge to confirm our arrival. As has been reported by others, staff was both friendly and helpful. We were offered discounted ferry tickets and an offer that we could leave our car at the hotel during our day visit to the island. This saved us parking fees. The Shepler's shuttle was called to collect us the next day and dropped us off when we returned. As many have written, this family operated motel is impeccably clean and well appointed inside. Internet was fast, heat in the evenings kept us comfortable. (Many hotels turn off heat until October). This motel has obviously gone through a recent renovation. Entering the room, the smell of freshly laid carpet was apparent. The two queen beds were comfortable and provided a good night sleep for our family of 3. Despite the location on a busy street, insulation and sound proofed windows muffled any noise from passing traffic. All important hot water had good pressure and volume in a very clean bathroom. (The only negative would be the towels which were rather thin). We normally stay in brand name box hotels when we are on the road because there is usually a free breakfast. Wayside offers coffee but no breakfast. But that was not a problem. A pancake house was a short walk down the street. All in all, we enjoyed our time at Wayside Motel. It was a good value. We will look to stay here again on our next visit to Mackinac Island.

The TV also the smallest literally in years of hotel stays... a Phillips 32 inch... AND... absolutely zero premium channels... you can't even order a movie!?!? Yes... Mackinac Island is a tourist destination with lots to do and see... but the nights after walking all day, biking 8.2 miles, you want to get back to a decent room and watch something without commercial pharmaceuticals ads every five minutes... I called the chamber of commerce specifically to check which hotels accept a well trained dog companion... was told... " oh we here at the chamber always recommend St Ignace to our own family members. So... this is the ONLY reason for the "1" rating.... It's the ONLY positive. I will NEVER come back. I will never recommend this run down, old, dated, categorically inadequate hotel... even the manager is clueless on how to run it, says he's new management... After a carriage tour of the island, we went here and explored on our own. If you are not staying here, you have to pay an entrance fee to be able to go in and explore. Its porch is the world's longest and offers a great view. Its interiors are intricate and very beautiful. One would see that the carpet, fixtures, and furniture are well taken care of. The vibrant colors, bold contrasts, and floral patterns are everywhere. They have different restaurants inside (Main Dining Room, Cupola Bar, Geranium Bar, The Jockey Club, etc) as well as an ice cream parlor (Sadie's). They also have some areas showcasing artwork/paintings as well as memorabilia from movies shot here: Somewhere in Time and This Time for Keeps. Do not forget to visit the Secret Garden. It's beautiful! The accommodation can be very pricey. Though we did not stay here, visiting (with the entrance fee) is definitely worth it.

Meaning we couldn't understand the waiters and such. A person gets tired of saying " I don't understand" to your server. The views are amazing, the ambiance is very special. The porch is magnificent. They have a "dress code" after 6:30 of elegance, black tie etc, that they don't enforce in the formal dining room. While my husband and I were appropriately dressed as it was our anniversary, the two tables right in front of us boasted a gang of 6 children and 4 parents, looked like they just came up from the beach. There are other resteraunts that would've suited this family, and they should have been directed there when they came to the dining room. So that was also a disappointment. Lost power for about an hour and a half, dining room has hours of operations, so I wasn't able to fix my hair before we went down. Exploring the island is fun, again couldn't understand the carriage drivers "tour". Supposed to be a hour and a half tour around the island- that wasn't true at all. 3 or 4 stops just sitting there for about 10 minutes to rest the horses - so no, we did not get to see the entire island as promised. Felt a bit ripped off by the $80 per person here. We won't be returning, ratio of Muslims (rude and pushy), Pakistani's and Indian people all pushy and looked entitled soured us walking around - like 10:1 ratio, if not more. I'm not racist, I am an observationist and this is what we witnessed. Not the Mackinac Island I remembered visiting so many times with my Grand Parents over the years - Get it together and return it to the Americans, like it should be.

I suspect the people that typically stay here don't have an issue with such things, but you could tell the items in the room were all a little bit long in the tooth. Check-in went more or less OK, although the staff seemed a bit bewildered and disorganized. It was cute when we were handed actual keys. Such a novelty to have actual keys instead of key cards in this day and age. We had to use their little dropbox to turn the keys in when we left early the following morning. This was fine of course but I would've appreciated being told about it in advance. On balance I don't think this would be my first choice for a stay again in the future.

Fortunately, I was able to retrieve it because we forgot to close the door all the way; there no one in the office until 9 am and calls to both numbers posted for help before then weren't answered. Overall a great experience at this hotel, great location on the main strip just steps away from the ferry dock. We like our rooms cold and the AC was pumping that we actually turned it down or off several times. We did use the pool once and it was also clean and well maintained.
