My Experience at Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic On October 26, 2023, I brought my beloved cat, Higgins, to Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic in Santa Fe for what was supposed to be a routine dental procedure under anesthesia. He was entrusted to the care of Dr. Jonathan Baldys. Later that afternoon, Higgins was released without a consultation from the veterinarian. He appeared to be drooling, which I was told was normal, but he soon began gagging and acting distressed. I also noticed a strange "crunchy" sensation in his back. When we followed up the next day, we were told that Higgins had not received subcutaneous fluids, contradicting what I had suspected. That same day, Higgins was examined again by Dr. Baldys, who diagnosed him with subcutaneous emphysema caused by a torn trachea, apparently due to intubation during the dental procedure. He attempted to relieve the trapped air under Higgins' skin and sent us home with medication. Despite my continued efforts to stabilize Higgins and multiple visits to RoadRunner Veterinary Clinic and Gruda Veterinary Hospital over the following week--including oxygen therapy and emergency interventions--Higgins' condition deteriorated. He died from cardiac arrest on November 5, 2023, just ten days after what should have been a routine dental cleaning. I filed a formal complaint with the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine, in which I alleged that Higgins' death was the result of negligence, incompetence, or malpractice. The Board ultimately dismissed the complaint. I respectfully disagreed with that outcome and remain deeply concerned about the standard of care my cat received. Higgins was a loving, trusting companion, and he suffered immensely in his final days. I remain heartbroken and haunted by the fact that his death may have been preventable. If you're considering Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic, I encourage you to ask detailed questions, seek second opinions, and make the decision that is best for your animal. I will never get Higgins back, but I hope that sharing my experience may spare someone else the pain we've experienced. read more

My rescue pitty tends to be very aggressive and is hard to bring in for office visits and the former veterinarian understood that and would refill his allergy medication which he desperately needs no problem but the current doctor refuses to fill it without seeing him. I've left several messages to see if we could do a Tele visit and they never called me back! read more

Can't say enough good things about Cedarwood Veterinary and Dr. Mark Terry. The staff were warm and welcoming from start to finish. Dr. Terry was kind, down to earth, and took ample time with us. He came into exam room and sat on the floor, which my dogs *loved*. He discussed options with us and talked about costs of different options. We landed on something very reasonable (start low $ and slow Rx and ramp up when and if necessary). It's been two days and my under-the-weather pup is peppy and energetic again. Final price for exams and rabies shots, and meds for one dog was very reasonable. Glad we found them and we will definitely keep taking our fur babies there. read more

I had an emergency with my dog and checked in with Cedarwood. I booked an appointment online, but they ended up being overbooked because of a computer error. They apologized profusely and allowed me to drop off my dog because of their error. The staff was supportive, funny, and attentive. By the end of the day I had a diagnosis, although the veterinary practice had been booked, solidly that day. While I understand that the practice might not always be able to do this, I am grateful for their attentiveness and professionalism. read more

All 3 of my cats go to Cedarwood & see Dr. Jon Baldy's, one of my cats had to get his teeth extracted, Dr. Baldy's was great! My cat was up and running + eating the next day after surgery. Like any other place you can tell that Cedarwood is understaffed but the staff has been great and welcoming every time! I took my dog into Cedarwood Vet Clinic yesterday morning for a regular check up and a urinary exam. When I picked him up five hours later (the time it took for them to complete the exam), the clinician who brought him out mentioned offhandedly that he had partially escaped his harness, but didn't mention any injuries or issues. Once we got home, I noticed he was licking his paw, and a quick check showed that the paw was bloody and raw (image attached). I called the next day to ask for more information. Rather than offering an apology, the doctor emphasized repeatedly that "he did it to himself" and claimed that while he was reactive when they tested his paw, she did not see any injuries when they checked. When I pressed for information about how he was kenneled (e.g., was he tied up?), and how thoroughly his paw was checked, I was met with extreme resistance and defensiveness. They never once apologized for the injuries my dog sustained while in their care, nor did they take any responsibility or show remorse that he was hurt. I really never write reviews, but I am genuinely dismayed by their lack of care & their complete lack of professionalism. I'll not be returning; I'd recommend anyone who cares for their pets to seek care elsewhere. read more

After being a client of Cedarwood Veterinary for over 22 years I was told today that my dog, who had a medical emergency, couldn't be seen until July 17th. I was also told the my vet that had been treating my dogs for all 22 years had retired. I was told to go to another vet or go to Albuquerque for treatment. There was no effort to help my situation by trying to squeeze me in for an appointment. I will not be going back again. If they can't figure out how to see my dog, they will NEVER see me again. read more

My dog had been sick for 2 days with diarrhea and vomiting and was becoming dehydrated and lethargic. I called Cedarwood on Sat because he had seen Dr Mark Terry there a few weeks ago for a well check so that when an emergency came up he would be seen. When I finally got through the tedious menu, I was told there were no vets there and only vet techs giving immunizations that Sat. Why bother being open without the vet ? There is no "arrangement" for any other vet to cover patients there OR at another facility. You do not want to be in this situation. read more

I took my four legged baby in for an exam and to get vaccinations. They were really friendly and quick to get me an appointment. Max was happy to be there, he wanted to meet everyone. The care was amazing and we didn't have to wait long to be seen. They answered every question I had. They didn't leave a huge dent in my wallet. I would refer them to anyone. read more

I can't say enough good things about this practice. I had a cat with a severe eye injury and an imminent international trip, so needless to say I was stressed. Dr. Grossman was incredibly wonderful. He squeezed me in for appointments when Mannis (my cat) looked worse, he made referrals, suggested I get a longer term vaccine (which was cheaper) and even didn't charge me for an eye stain in a follow up appointment. He did unofficial phone consultations! I found the flat vet fee very reasonable, and was always was greeted with friendly faces. When I waited in the car for one appointment (dogs in lobby were stressing the cat) they came out to get me in the car!! I can't tell you how reassuring it is to find a knowledgable, kind, honest, and above-and-beyond vet. And price-wise, a friend told me her vet's flat fee and it was triple Cedarwood's. I brought my sisters cat to Dr. Evan Grossman as this clinic came up under the search for feline vets in Santa Fe. I was very pleased with his caring attitude and his kindness to THE cat who is a spoiled Rag Doll. The staff was also very friendly and competent and we arrived at a diagnosis and treatment quickly. This is the second time we have been to this clinic with our puppy. We were called and notified our Bruce needed his rabies. When we arrived the receptionist was rude about the appointment letting us know he was 10 days too young but the vet may do it anyway she also wanted Bruce to have his puppy shot as she indicated they were behind. We bought his 2nd and 3rd puppy shots from the feed store and administered them ourselves, so he didn't need them done at the clinic. While explaining this to the receptionist she continued to be very rude. The tech was amazing and really enjoyed the time with her. The vet was also off his game when compared to the first visit with Bruce. He didn't really evaluate or check him out other than to determine if he can give the shot. They were very off point today but the tech was a joy! Will reconsider finding a new Vet. read more

This is the second review of the Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic in Santa Fe that I have written in the last seven days. Yelp chose not to post my first review. I had gone to Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic for a year and thought my two dogs were being well cared for. I was mistaken. Last week I wrote how a vet at Cedarwood Veterinary Clinic completely missed what was in front of their eyes while diagnosing my female dog. The day after I saw the vet at Cedarwood , I had to rush her to an emergency vet . My female dog is now doing much better from the excellent care she has received from the emergency vet. The same day the Cedarwood vet examined my female , they also gave my male dog his annual check up .The vet told me that I did not need to be concerned about my male dog' s heart disease that was known to the vet for the past year. The vet did not take any an X-rays or take any blood for tests . After seeing the new vet with my female dog, I decided I wanted a second opinion for my male dog . I was concerned that the Cedarwood vet may have missed something. I was correct. It turns out my male's heart disease is far more advanced than what the vet from Cedarwood told me. The new vet took blood work and did an X-ray on the dog's heart. The blood work also showed red flags that were not even related to the dog's heart.I looked at the x-ray and saw how enlarged my dog's heart is .There was also a lump that the Cedarwood vet totally missed . We recently moved here from out of state. My 11 year old German Shepherd gets a monthly injection of Adequan for his bad hip. Back home in California, I would bring him to our vet clinic anytime for his injection. He didn't need an appointment as a vet tech gave him the shot and it only takes about 2 minutes. There was no charge. I always supply the Adequan and syringe. I started taking him to Cedarwood for his injections. I had to make an appointment every month, and a vet - usually Dr. Mark Terry - gave him the shot. I wasn't charged. I didn't understand why an appointment with a vet was necessary. Giving injections is something any vet tech can do, but that was okay. It's their clinic, so they're entitled to do things however they chose. On about our 6-7th visit, we were put in an exam room and kept waiting a long time. Dr. Terry and the vet tech were standing right outside the door. Dr. Terry was just finding out he wasn't being paid for that 2 minutes of his extraordinarily valuable time to administer the injection and wasn't willing to see us. [Never mind that Dr. Terry had seen all 3 of my dogs just a month or so before, and the bill had been $440.00. His attitude, apparently, was: what have you done for me lately? Finally, the vet tech came in, gave my dog his shot and said that they weren't charging me this time, but they were going to discuss this matter with the business manager and there would probably be a "small charge" in the future. I had no idea why I had even been seeing a vet for such a simple and routine procedure in the first place, but this whole thing was so petty and so badly handled, it was a very negative experience. Then, about a month or two later, I was running low on Rimadyl for this same dog. I had a prescription for it from my vet in California and was waiting on delivery from 1-800-PetMeds, but I was afraid I would run out before it arrived. I called Cedarwood and asked if I could buy maybe 6 of them to see us through just until his Rimadyls arrived. After all, he was already a patient at Cedarwood and had been treated for the same condition for which he need the Rimadyl. The receptionist said she'd have to discuss it with Dr. Terry, and she'd call me back. I told her to ask Dr. Lauer, not Dr. Terry. We had seen Dr. Lauer once before, and of course, I had no intention of seeing Terry again. EVER!!! She called me back that afternoon and said that Dr. Lauer said I'd have to make an appointment to bring my dog in for blood work. An appointment: cha-ching goes the cash register. Blood work: cha-ching goes the cash register. And for 6 lousy Rimadyls that had already been prescribed by another vet for an old dog who they already knew had a bad hip? Seriously??? I saw their new vet, Marcus Martin one time as well. He was pushing blood work really hard when my dog has just started taking Rimadyl. I kept telling him he had just STARTED taking it, but he simply wasn't listening. I can only surmise that they do their blood work in house, so it's a big moneymaker for them, and that's why they're always pushing it so hard. I would not recommend this place to anyone. They are interested in your checkbook. The animal is optional. read more

I've been taking my cats and now my 13 year old dog to Cedarwood Vet for 16 years and have never been disappointed with the care and service provided. This week my dog was taken there while I was out of state and without even being able to speak with staff due to time differences and in-flight situation, I knew she would be in the best care. My greatest thanks to Dr. Lauer for knowing my old puppy and doing the best for her. She's still with me and looking healthier every day. read more

Small Clinic with personable front desk staff and highly competent veterinary clinicians who have been there for a long while. Everyone is caring and attentive. I've been taking my cats and dogs there for about 14 years and am confident they are getting the best of care. The docs have always recommended a vet specialist when needed. 0 stars.. Have been a patient here in the past. They took great care of my tiny dog last year so I thought Id try them again. I just needed 2 simple puppy shots. But OH NO! Dr. Terry wasn't having it. You absolutely have to pay for 2 exams and 2 shots. A shot at tractor supply store runs 9 dollars. Dr. Cash register wants 27 dollars per shot. Over my dead body. I asked can you guys give me a discount, after all I have spent alot of money here in the past. And NOPE. CAsh register dont like being asked for a discount. My cat got sick and I ended up coming in one day before the scheduled appointment. As far as I am concerned, the doctor gave my cat a second lease on life by implementing swift treatment. Within 48 hours my cat is on the mend. We still have to get to the underlying condition, but he is healthy and we have the time to get the prognosis and long term treatment sorted out. I discovered Cedarwood when I took my cat in for an initial first visit (free) after adopting him from the Humane Society. read more

Dr Martin and every staff member were empathic and caring in a very challenging situation.

Since this vet is closest to me I decided to give it a try. For my first experience I took my kitten who I knew was very ill and I didn't get any answers. The guy vet I dealt with was not proactive and didn't do anything that day so I took my kitten elsewhere and got answers immediately. I then went in another time to give them a second try for my older cat who cut his paw and was bleeding. I saw the same guy vet who again just talked and talked in circles and was again not proactive. I could've found more information if I did my own research. I took him to Cedarwood to see a VET who should be an expert on what to do. Again, I went back to my original vet and got immediate answers and proactive help. Not to mention, my sick little kitten that I had taken in previously to this vet got brought up (whom we had to put down) and the guy vet said to me "yeah I sensed that he had something like that" but yet did nothing about it. I will not give this vet a third try. A waste of time and money. read more

We had a great experience here with both Dr. Lauer and Dr. Grossman. We brought our small dog for a surgery for Cryptorchidism. They did a thorough exam and also found and gave treatment for an eye infection. They care and tenderness they gave to my nervous little dog was so sweet - I only wish my human doctors had such bedside manner. Because we were only in town for 2 weeks, they thoughtfully scheduled the surgery for the next day, and helped make follow-up appointments within our time frame. Everyone from the Vets, the vet techs, and the reception staff were friendly, organized, and thorough. I particularly appreciated the itemized review of the bill before any procedures were performed, so there were no surprises. I found this clinic by "crowd-sourcing" my friends in the area, and was not disappointed. I recommend to others. read more

This is the worst vet I've ever been too. I was disappointed because the reviews seemed good and when we arrived it looked like a down-to-earth clinic, but our experience was not good. Bottom line, I've never seen our cats so stressed out and on-edge as they were at this vet. The vibe is bad, the facility is dirty, the scheduling is sub-par, and the doctors are below average. We took our three kitties to Cedarwood from 2016-2017 for their usual check-ups, shots, etc. and we were underwhelmed with Dr. Jenn Lauer and Dr. Mark Terry. On our first visit, one of our cats gave Dr. Lauer a firm love nibble and she freaked out. She even put a warning sticker on our file to beware of our cat, which is ridiculous because he is the sweetest, most friendly, loverboy. He is playful and likes to chew, but by no means the dangerous cat she implied both by her reaction and adding that sticker to our file. Additionally, she seemed uneasy around our cats, not in command of her space, and there was no love there. To give you an idea of our old vet, she once prescribed "a million kisses" to this same cat because he is so sweet. This isn't just a personal dislike of how Dr. Lauer reacted to this one situation though, both her and Dr. Terry were not on top of their game and their scheduling team wasn't either. They both seemed frazzled and uneasy. We had multiple issues with scheduling and late appointments and their staff even tried to switch us from one doctor to another doctor last minute. We chose a specific doctor for a reason, and in hindsight this wouldn't have mattered at this vet anyway, but we didn't like the way they handled this. During routine check-ups, when both doctors should have been delegating help from their vet techs for their shots, I stepped in because they didn't seem to know how to properly hold the cat or to ask for the help from their team. The other vets we've been happy with have had their vet techs wrap the kitties in a blanket if necessary and take them in back for their shots. They couldn't even complete shots for 1-2 (I can't recall specifically now) of our cats, which was a first for us. Our old vet had us bring in all three kitties at the same time for efficiency and cost sake and we never had any issues with this. Though our kitties don't enjoy going to the vet, they are generally pretty mellow. That said, with all three kitties, Dr. Lauer seemed totally overwhelmed and Dr. Terry seemed frazzled (which could be a scheduling issue because he had been in surgery and hadn't eaten lunch, yet they scheduled us anyway) and both of them looked like they were just winging it. Why didn't the receptionist let us know that their doctors wouldn't be able to handle our kitties together before we brought them in? There is a lack of communication here. Also, I think part of why our kitties really didn't like this place is because the inside desperately needs renovating. It is old, dingy, and there are old pet smells everywhere, which I'm sure they picked-up on and it stressed them out even more. If our kitties make it clear they feel uncomfortable, we're underwhelmed, and the routine procedures aren't completed, that's more than enough reason to give a different vet a try. I can't imagine what their surgeries would be like. Don't go here. read more

As far as I'm concerned this is the best vet in town. My pets have had the best care available and I can't imagine going anywhere else. If I have a problem they always manage to find an appointment for me. Darrell is the backbone of the place and is the true miracle worker keeping every thing in order. Thanks Darrell! Made an appointment to have my pure breed poodle puppies tails docked and dew claws removed with Dr. Lauer. And when I got there, she looked for excuses not to dock the tails if they were not going to be show dogs, and wanted proof of the mother being AKC registered and asked where the father was. Dr. Lauer was very unprofessional and rude and was a huge waste of time because the puppies should have their tails docked within a four day period. We brought our dog in 1 day after arriving in Santa Fe with some stomach issues. It was a Monday and we were able to get in that morning. The staff & vet were great. Some issues arose post visit and we returned the next day but everything turned out to be okay and we were reassured of this after another exam. The vet prescribed an Rx and some probiotics and our little sweetie turned out just fine. Our dogs are our de facto kids. And we are always looking for the best care where ever we may be living. That said its a bit nerve racking when out of town and something arises. Cedarwood is a veterinary clinic I would recommend to residents and out of towners alike. We stayed at Las Paloma's where they asked for an update of our dog and for business cards if we were happy with the vet clinic. I grabbed a handful. On Friday December 5th my dog was attack. She was severely injured bleeding severely with her bone showing through the tear in her skin. I immediately phoned Cedarwood (my vet) told them it was an emergency, and asked if I could bring my dog in for treatment. The receptionist told me they were busy and didnt have the time to see my dog. Needless to say they will not be my vet any longer. read more

Cedarwood has a friendly and efficient front office staff and I found Dr. Lauer and the animal techs to be highly expert and compassionate in their treatment of our furry little four legged family member. I particularly appreciated Dr. Lauer's call to me immediately following a recent surgery to report on our pet's wellbeing and on what she found and had to do. Our little guy is back home healthy and happy. As a longtime owner of both cats and dogs who has lived in several cities in the US, I can say without reservation that Cedarwood is the best veterinary clinic with the highest quality care that we have ever experienced. read more

i've been taking my dog to cedarwood since we moved here. i will not return after today. the vet tech (though sweet) was extremely scattered and stressed. the vet was rushing though our appointment and when it was time to check out the front desk woman was extremely rude and "lost" my estimate and tried to charge me $280 when it was estimated to be $220. after arguing with her for 10 minutes we left feeling rushed, frustrated, and like they truly didn't give a shit. read more

I have visited many vet clinics in my life with having so many animals but mostly dogs and I enjoy the way I am treated as well as my animals..I also like that they will let me do some treatments at home so I do not constantly have to bring my dog in for every little thing.
