It's not ideal to have an emergency with an injured or sick pet, but it's so good to know they'll get good care here when they do. Smith has done work with me on a few occasions with injured pets. They accept Care Credit and even have something called Arthur's Fund if you need help. The staff and doctors are always really wonderful and caring here. You can tell they really care about the wellbeing of the animals. read more

It was probably a good thing that Smith's told us they were "too busy" to help our bleeding dog who had just smashed her paw through a glass window. After all, they killed our last dog who we brought in for an emergency by making her wait hours before giving her the emergency surgery she required. read more

Well this is not the vet I would ever choose to go to, but my parents used it for their dog so that's where I took her when I was in town and found her having issues. Not to bury the lead here, so the dog is doing fine. They correctly diagnosed the dogs UTI and suggested she may have some kidney disease but would have to be retested once the UTI was cleared up. I will give them points for accuracy and treatment. They don't do appointments though, rather just walk ins which is super weird for a regular vet. They also don't charge like a regular vet but more like an emergency vet, which they are not. I had the bloodwork rerun in Arizona once the UTI was cleared up. They were correct in that there was kidney damage which we are working on, so I'm glad they suggested the retest. Their charge for the bloodwork, approached $600. My AZ vets charge to rerun the exact same bloodwork, about $300. read more

My vet was out of town, but they are affiliated with Smiths. I drove 30 miles to Santa Fe for their walk in clinic. Everyone was friendly and helpful. After only a 5 min wait, they called us back. The vet and techs were able to address my dog's issues, provided treatment, gave me medications and even spare bandages to take home. The price was reasonable, and the staff again very professional and friendly as I left. I will go back to this vet. read more

This place seems very unorganized I'm having trouble finding a good vet hospital for my pup and I came across this place. This is my second time coming here and I understand it's a walk-in hospital but i was also asked if I can call before coming in as well??? So is it appointment based or not?? Not to mention you're going to be waiting around an hour or more for even a simple vaccination... I used to work at a animal hospital and when we had returning patients come in for vaccine updates or boosters, a tech would take them back and do the shot in like 5 minutes. I've been waiting for over an hour for only 1 vaccine booster. From one visit, I'd say this is the place I would take a pet you're concerned about in Santa Fe. After multiple visits to eldorado vet and Route 66 in ABQ, it continually felt like no one was even looking at the tests and images they took and charged me for. At the time of writing this, the best way to have a pet seen is to show up and be ready to be admitted at 7:30am. Due to their corporate ownership they are understaffed, like all of the vets in Santa Fe. Dr. Breer and the tech who's name I've really unfortunately forgotten were the first people out of 3 vets that showed care and concern for my puppy, and more so, also could tell I was pretty taxed myself and offered to let me step out and eat for the first time in the day and take a bit of a breather. We are on to a 4th vet for more tests, but under the circumstances, this was the first vet visit since my dog's illness that was caring and had a direction to pursue. Thank you. read more

My two mini-doxies have been going to Smiths for over 7 years. Last year I had their teeth clean and they needed extractions. The fee was $1200. This year I brought them for cleaning and extractions and the the fee was $3,800. I will acknowledge that more teeth were extracted, but a 300% increase in the cost is ridiculous. I also noted that the staff I've seen for years were no longer there. Since they have been subsumed by Thrive, their profit margin seems to have escalated. I will be changing vets. read more

We have always counted on Smith Vet for our dogs when we are in Santa Fe for the summers. They are "the Mayo Clinic" of Vet clinics in New Mexico. I highly recommend them. Our Briard got Foxtail in her paws and nose. I rushed her to the clinic and they got them out before surgery was needed. Our Miniature Dachshund eats things he shouldn't. My elderly dog came down with acute pancreatitis and my regular vet couldn't work him in. I called Smith's and they told me to bring him in asap. Everyone from the receptionists, vet techs and then the doctors were caring and worked quickly to diagnose him and start treatment. He was hospitalized for two days, and it was touch and go, but their treatment plan was ultimately successful and my boy is back home. I am incredibly grateful to the entire staff for all their hard work. read more

My dog Savannah wasn't seen. It isn't just a matter of her not getting medical attention. The woman working behind the counter - middle-aged, hispanic - was unconscionably rude. Here's what happened: I arrived in the parking lot and called your number as per your instructions online. No one answered. I called again with the same result. From what I read in your instructions, I was supposed to go into the lobby if nobody answered the phone. I tried but the door was locked. The woman aforementioned came to the door and told me the instructions were on door. I told her I read the instructions and nobody was answering the phone. She said call again and I'll answer. I called again several times and she didn't answer. I knocked on the glass in the sidelight and she came out. Here's the exchange that followed: Her: What do you want? We're only seeing sick dogs and emergencies. Me:My dog went to the dog park yesterday and damaged 2 of her paws, but... At that point she cut me off. What I was going to say before she rudely interrupted me is: but now it seems to be more than that. She's become so crippled, she can just barely walk and she's obviously in pain. Her: Come back tomorrow! (She yelled this twice!) If you don't consider my dog's problem serious enough to warrant attention today, that's bad enough, but there was no justification for being so offensive and uncivil. I agree with the person who said they hated to write this review. I have taken my dogs and cat to Smith for 20 years, the most trusted vet in town. They have seen me through thick and thin, and at times felt like family to me. I knew they had been purchased by a corporation a while back, but the staff was the same as was the quality of service. Now they are owned by a private equity firm! 2 weeks ago, I took my dog in to have a cut looked at and dermatitis treated.I arrived at 2:00 pm, just after their lunch hour. There were 8 people ahead of me in line, and only 3 receptionists instead of the usual 5 or 6, no one I recognized. I was told my dog couldn't possibly be seen that day because 7 vets had quit in the last 2 weeks and they only had 3 vets available that day. 2:00 was their cut-off time for patients to be seen that day! I was welcome to come back at 7:30 the next morning and try waiting. I'm used to waiting at Smith, but what would I be waiting for? Unknown vets? And for how long? I had taken time off work to take my dog in. I left, and I have to add that a vet did follow me out to the car to make sure my dog's cut was not dangerous, but my dog did not get care for that or his dermatitis, nor a wellness exam, and I left with no peace of mind and plenty of frustration. I feel very bad, not only for our pets, but also for all the wonderful people who are now out of a job due to Wall Street's greed. read more

I am leaving after over 40 years as a customer. Today I received a letter informing me that I had called an employee a low life. I did refer to a receptionist as a low level employee, trying to be clear that she was not responsible for the poor management and policy decisions. Over the last few years customer service has been declining and I often feel like I am being upsold and they are just trying to milk every dollar out of every transaction, corporate crap to be sure. The care has been OK, but I have had to follow up on every prescription to get them to give authorization to the pharmacy. During our stay in Santa Fe, our dog became very ill. Other clinics we called said they were 'not taking new patients', even when we made it clear that we weren't here to stay but just to get our dog well enough to get home. Smith said, come on in but we're first-come-first-served so you may have to wait. By the time we got there, our dog was in bad shape. The intake folks took one look and said, we'll bring him in on an emergency basis. Which they did, and they brought our sweet boy back from the brink and we were able to get him home. Everyone we worked with at Smith was polite and compassionate. We thought their charges were reasonable, especially given the quality of care. read more

During our trip to Santa Fe our pit bull (Mora) had broken her toe nail inside her paw. We called several clinics and were turned away due "not taking new clients". When we reached out to Smith Veterinary Hospital, they were able to take us in right away. Upon arriving and going through typical processing we met with the vet tech Abigail who was immediately able to build a rapport with Mora. Then Dr. Sanchez entered and did the exact same with her. He explained what she required and was able to get her into surgery (minor) and out the door in a short time. All I can say is "thank you" for taking such good care of our family and not gouging us non-locals. read more

They told us they were busy in the morning and suggested we could only come in after 1pm... what they failed to mention was after 1pm "emergency" fees applied. $155 extra after 1pm but they did not tell us that even when checking in but waited until we were checking out. I was just banned from Smith Veterinary- i went in to get some vaccinations for my dog and pick up some Science Diet food- there was none available on the shelf so asked the receptionist if there was any in the storeroom- she made no effort to look and says no- then I asked her for the next compatible Science Diet food and she says there is none which is untrue as other receptionists have suggested another compatible food- I take my dog in for vaccinations and ask the tech if she will see if there is any food in the storeroom and what do you know there it was! While I was waiting to check in a man in front of me was trying to get some information from his chart and the same receptionist told him it's not there without even attempting to look at his chart- the receptionist accused me of throwing my credit card at her which is a blatant lie-the vets there are very good but the management and receptionist side is horrible- it will take a while to find another vet service but it will hopefully be an improvement to this- read more

I have always been happy with the care of my animals at Smiths until lately. The prices have increased considerably. They used to allow you to drop off your animal in the morning for an extra ten dollars and pick your animal up by the end of the day. This allowed me to not miss any work. Now, if you bring your animal in and there are no appointments available, they charge you $150. plus the cost of the visit, meds, etc. Today I was not allowed to even go in and use the restroom, but told to drive down the road to find a place... ??? REALLY? I have spent thousands of dollars at this vets office. I have been vaccinated against Covid and wore a mask. They would still not allow me to come inside to just use the restroom..... even though a few months ago I was allowed to go into the lobby....To say I am upset is an understatement!!!! I have been bringing my 14 yo standard poodle to Smith since we moved to Santa Fe 5 years ago and have always been happy with their service. I recently took her for two of the many subcutaneous cysts that she develops which had become ulcerated and were causing her pain. I was worried because in the past I had been told that it was unlikely that they could be operated on because of her age. I took her just hoping that we could do something to make her more comfortable. Dr. Wendy Duran was wonderful. She was willing to give excision a try. Two weeks + later. Leela is a new dog!! She healed beautifully (after some iffy days post surgery) and making her comfortable with her pain meds rather than trying to prolong her life has given her a new lease on life. She is her old self. This review is about Dr. Chris Anderson's incompetence, poor people skills and abrasive attitude. First things first my kitten was presumably bitten by a black widow spider. I found the spider and I had a sickly kitten and put two and two together. Upon doing research I learned that these bites can be fatal in animals and require immediate vet care. The treatment is to give the animal antivenin (Latrodectus mactans) (Black Widow Spider Antivenin) and fluids. Dr. Anderson sees me and explains he knows nothing about treatment of spider bites and needs to look it up. I tell him what I know. He offers me bloodwork and X-rays. I start with blood work to keep my fees at a minimum. An hour later Dr. Anderson returns and tells me the blood and urine tests are normal. He doesn't think it's a bite and he's trying to find another cause. I ask about anitvenin and he says they don't have it at the cat hospital and probably nowhere else in town. He then tries to tell me that my 6-month-old kitten could be losing his eyesight and that's why he's acting weird. He has no basis for this possible diagnosis except the fact that kitty's eyes were dilated. Next, he asks me if I leave recreational drugs around? I'm pretty sure that would show up on the bleeping blood and urine tests he just administered and shared the results of. So... no doctor I didn't leave my meth out and no I don't do drugs. Next, he says "well there is a book I could look at but someone else was using so I didn't" ....... I just look at him and then he says "oh I'll go see if they are done and look it up." I can't even begin to explain how moronic this individual is coming across - just dumbfounded. When he returns he tries to talk me into an x-ray. I say no I'd rather take him home and monitor him. He gives my kitten an antibiotic, Benedryl and fluids in case there is something wrong with him despite normal tests. Fine, it can't hurt but I'm still banking on a spider bite. We are on our way. Check out is 3 hours after check-in. My total is $450 - $50 of that included a test that we never discussed. I asked the reception about it and the doctor came out 15 min later and proceeded to argue with me that I consented to everything. His tone and volume of speech were abrasive and his attitude condescending and rude. Needless to say, I left in tears. Being concerned for my kitten knowing he didn't get the antivenin and is seemingly still suffering, and being essentially bullied by this doctor who doesn't know anything was extremely distressing. I can't imagine that anyone would deem his behavior appropriate. read more

Have had a relationship with them for about 5 years and the CSRs or front desk people have been increasingly short, rude, impatient or kind of mean. Maybe they are overworked, but whatever it is it's started to feel bad going here since just before covid. I've had good experiences with the docs there, although typically it's a different doc every time and some listen better than other as expected. It's mostly just the office staff that seems to treat me with a lot of resentment when I try to get an appt or drop in. read more

They have very competent, nice doctors. However, they do not make appointments except for "wellness" exams and dentals. Even then you may experience long wait times as we have. You show up and take your chances. We've waited 20min; we've 2+hours. First come first serve. I've seen handwritten signs posted they are only checking in emergencies that day. They clearly lack admin capability to anticipate customer need based on past experience. Customer time is as important or more so than facility time. Are they being overwhelmed by demand? Perhaps. Then they need the admin chops to budget for this and go out to the market and hire add'l help - vets, vet techs, whatever they need to - and pay accordingly, charge the customers commensurately. Basic business. If they do not accommodate the growing community need other vets will benefit and Smith will lose lots of business. They are about to lose us. read more

My long time vet in Abq (who is absolutely amazing) recommended this place to me when I'm north and can't get to Abq. Several of the people she graduated with worked here and she said it hadn't been bought out by corporate so the prices should still be pretty reasonable. I figured I'd check the place out and took my dogs to get their nails clipped (because they're whiny little brats who won't let me do it without employing the equivalent of hog tying and wrestling)...needless to say, it's not worth me doing it myself. I loved that I didn't have to make an appointment and could just walk in (not to mention they have great hours during the week and on the weekends to make it super convenient). The facility was nice, the parking was good, and service was fast and friendly. There was one really unhappy customer (seemed like she had been waiting for a doctor forever when there was literally no one else in the waiting room). Two nail trims for my dogs was almost $50!!! WTF. Most places it's MAX $30. My last vet was $11 each. I should have checked the price but every place I've been has only charged $10-$15 per dog so I didn't even consider that I would feel completely ripped off. It's not like they polished their nails or did anything special either. Maybe a long paw massage that I didn't know about? The gross overcharging for something that a vet tech does did not make a good first impression. Although I trust my other vet's recommendation on the quality of care, I'm scared to go back for anything else since it may literally cost me a kidney or some other body part. Maybe both. From now on I'll just go to Petsmart where they do the same thing for the right price- it's not like it's rocket science, I just prefer my dogs don't hate me for the next few weeks. For the price Smith charged, PetsMart will brush their teeth, clean their ears, and do their nails. . I love our basset hound, but man, the guy is high maintenance. My fiance and I spent the first morning of our Santa Fe vacation taking Duke to the vet for a limp that he'd developed on the long drive from Los Angeles. I found Smith Veterinary Hospital through Yelp. I called in and made sure that walk-ins were welcome, and we drove over. The waiting room was sunny and welcoming, with plentiful seating and a prominent fish tank. We checked in without difficulty, and the wait was mercifully short. We were led into an exam room by a woman (a nurse? an assistant? I don't know vet hospital designations) who took down all our information and made a preliminary profile of our dog and his many medical problems. She was very warm and friendly, and when she was done, she asked us to wait for the vet. The vet didn't take long. After just a few minutes, Dr. Amy Land came in and introduced herself to the three of us. Duke took to her immediately and acquiesced to some petting and a brief examination of his ailing front leg. She found the part that was troubling him pretty fast, and took him away for a quick X-ray. When she came back, she let us know that it was pano (which is what we expected, as he'd had it before) and gave us a run-down of what that meant, both in medical and practical terms. She was friendly and cheerful all the while, and she made us all feel very comfortable. We paid for the exam, the X-ray, and a bottle of Rimadyl on our way out, and it cost $194. Our vet back home charges $200 for an X-ray, so we felt like we got off light. Overall it was as pleasant an experience as going to the vet on vacation on very short notice could possibly be. I'd recommend Smith Veterinary Hospital to anyone looking for a Santa Fe vet. The people were wonderful, and our dog got the care he needed to allow his servants to go on with their lives. read more
