Extremely disappointing experience at Cellar Mixology Bar in downtown San Antonio. During my visit, someone grabbed my wrist and attempted to steal my Rolex while I was talking to my friend. What was even more upsetting was the response from security afterward. Instead of feeling helped or protected, I felt ignored and dismissed. The lack of urgency and concern from security was unacceptable. Guests should be able to feel safe when they go out, and I do not feel that my safety was taken seriously. I will be taking the appropriate steps to address this matter, including exploring legal action regarding security negligence!!!! read more

Make sure to get creative with the phone, before entering through the door to the cellar. The bar tenders provided exceptional service, walking us through our choices in the menu. An unexpected mystical experience offering spherical alcoholic concoctions (think of it as a jelly sphere that pops in your mouth releasing a mixed drink). The old fashioned is solid, too, with a branded ice cube and a display of flames to add some smokiness to it. I really hate to write bad reviews especially for locally owned businesses, but I recently had a horrible experience here & at their new bar next door, Stylus. We went Friday night to celebrate my birthday with a group of friends. Upon getting to the entrance of Cellar, the bouncer & security guard told my boyfriend he was not allowed to go in. We originally thought they were joking so we laughed it off, but turns out they were 100% serious. When we asked what the reasoning was, they falsely accused him of being someone else who had previously disrespected the owner. When we tried to explain that that was not him, they completely dismissed us and were adamant that it was and did not even try to help the situation by going to get proof. I was frustrated because I knew they were in the wrong but they kept treating us like we were dumb. Finally, one of the members of my group went inside to speak with the owner (same owner as Toro & Cuishe) and demanded for video or picture proof. While he was doing so, the security guard outside even had to audacity to come up to me and say "I am sorry to tell you this, but it was your boyfriend in the video." I asked him if he had seen the video and he said no, but that's just what he was told. So how could he even possibly know that?? No more than 5 minutes later, the owner comes out adamantly apologizing stating they were wrong and it was not my boyfriend in the video. Neither the bouncer nor the security guard apologized for their wrongdoings and honestly showed 0 remorse for treating us the way they did. Such an extremely frustrating situation that really makes it difficult for me to ever want to go back to these businesses again. It is really a shame because I have enjoyed dining at Toro and Cuishe, and have enjoyed taking friends from out of town to Cellar as well. Perhaps you should better vet these bouncers and security guards as they are the public's first impression when entering your establishments. read more

I first came to Cellar Mixology when I took and Airbnb experience cocktail class there last year and have been back several times. This historical speakeasy bar is hidden inside Toro restaurant. Nearby, there is $20 valet parking at Espee but much cheaper pay parking across Commerce on N Hoefgen Ave. The bartenders are friendly and trained in advanced molecular cocktail techniques such as using liquid nitrogen, smoke and spherification to make creative, high quality cocktails. I prefer a relaxed vibe so usually go between 5-7 pm because later at night it becomes more of a energetic night club. The music is like a club, maybe a tad too loud for me with a soeakead, but has the feeling of a lounge nonetheless. The bartenders are awesome, down to earth, and make great cocktails. I didn't know what to expect when I came here but it turned from awkward to fun. My partner and I were expecting this to be a lay low speakeasy but it's actually very club like considering the amount of people and the Dj on a Saturday night. It was PACKED. I'm glad to be vaccinated and we tried to keep our distance as best we could but you will bump shoulders in this place. The bartenders were all very skilled at making so many amazing cocktails and we were able to order in a timely manner considering it being a really busy night. Although we didn't get the speakeasy feel we definitely got to dance to some Latin music and take some photos by their cool neon signs. This place is 5 starts all the way! From the location, ambiance, drinks... everything is amazing! My husband and I are speakeasy fanatics, so when we heard Cellar opened in downtown, we knew we had to try it! I wouldn't consider Cellar a true speakeasy because of multiple factors (music, liquors being served, location, etc), but is still a pretty cool experience. To enter this place, you have to go through a "hidden" wall inside of Toro, and then walk down the stairs underneath the rose. When you walk in, you are immediately welcomed by their cool and definitely insta-worthy neon signs. The place is open with multiple tables which is great for big groups, and the music is cool but a little too loud for my taste. The true gem of this place is Bobby! He is the artists behind their cocktails, and I can assure you haven't had a cocktail this delicious in years! I order a Mezcal cocktail he recommended and it was perfection! The cocktail was definitely on the sweeter side, but it was strong enough that I could taste and feel the smokiness of the Mezcal. Finally got to check out this place on a hot Saturday night! Better than ever my friend invited us out to judge her new love interest. This bar is located below Toro. When you enter Toro, to the left is a white wall with a red phone. Press the wall to find a hidden staircase leading to the bar. Live music and a hip atmosphere is my first impression. Drinks are very "scientific". I had down the rabbit hole, where they come in separate glasses with the instructions "Pour me". When you pour into a glass of ice the drink turns from yellow to a purplish color. Strong drinks and cool to watch. We also ordered melon drops, that are just like the popping bobas with alcohol. It gets packed on Saturday nights so come a little early if you want to secure some seats. Cool place, pricey, but definitely worth the try! read more

This is my second visit and everything was great except there aren't too many options if you are on keto. Pretty much everything is loaded with sugar. Drinks have great presentation. But sometimes you just want something simple. I ended up going with the Spicy Cucumber spherifications and sadly wasn't too impressed. They probably would've been better if they had been cold. They ended up tasting soggy and almost like the texture of something from your nose. No bueno. I ended up going with a Down the Rabbithole, and this one was great as usual and comes in the cute Alice bottle with the "Pour me" sticker. The male bartendar was awesome. But the girl was hard to get the attention of and then would forget items we asked for, and it was super slow at this time. Still great atmosphere and concept with the hidden speak easy vibe. Came here for an event, and I LOVED it! The tone is set as soon as you walk in. There's a sign explaining the symbolism of the Rose, and then you walk down a staircase and it feels like everyone makes an entrance. It's relaxed and swanky there; with various seating arrangements. Couches for loungers, chairs for conversations, and bar stools all around for the crowd hoppers. The bar is beautiful and satisfyingly organized with all the bottles on display. They have a chalk board menu with some popular drink choices, but the bar tenders will make make you anything you ask for. It has a classy vibe, a place where you want to get a little dressed up and sip on a drink over an intimate conversation. Balls, balls, balls everywhere! Nitrogen balls, that is. So much fun! Love. Love. Love. Yes, most of the drinks are a complete novelty but the difference here is that the drinks taste exceptionally good as well. I wasn't expecting much just a bunch of "cool" looking drinks, I figured I'd come once for the experience and I'd probably never come back again. Nope, I was completely wrong. It's not an easy place to get to it's located next to Sunset Station, directly across the street from Alibi's it's within the Toro restaurant in the middle of the block off of commerce. Parking is slim to none around here so be prepared to uber from somewhere unless you are one of the lucky ones that finds parking available. Once you enter Toros you'll see a white brick wall on the left side with a red telephone, just push on the wall and voila the door opens to the "secret bar" downstairs in the basement. If you are a lameo you can always enter through the unmarked door next to the front entrance of Toro but don't be that guy - this is a secret bar go through the "secret " experience and have fun. Be careful walking down the stairs the pathway is dimly lit and you'll find a bunch of candles along the wall to guide your way. At the bottom of the stairs you'll arrive at the mecca - Cellar Mixology. Where is the menu, you ask? Don't look for any paper or physical menus here the offerings are located on the wall to the right of the bar. Some of the menu items are hidden behind the lighting fixtures at the bar so you may have get up close and personal with the wall and some of the patrons sitting at the bar near the wall. Don't worry no one will mind they will be too busy watching the magic of molecular mixology happening behind the bar. The space is dark and cave like which I absolutely love. The bartenders were fantabulous, they explained each of the different drinks and how they were made. Thank you, bartenders, for taking time out to share the beauty of the process and the ingredients involved. My boyfriend and I were on a mission to try as many drinks as we could - and we did! For a rundown of all the drinks we had please see below. But if you want to cut to the chase then I highly recommend you get a spherification drink (mojito) and Down the Rabbit Hole drink. Don't ask questions just do it. Trust me. I can say that I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun each drink's presentation was and the flavor profile that followed, some were simple and others complex with layers of textures and flavors. I'm not kidding when I say we tried half the menu and while it was pretty pricey it was well worth it. Drinks range around $12-13 each so budget accordingly. The patrons were friendly at the bar, the bartenders were attentive and talked us through the drinks, and the drinks were absolutely delicious. I honestly couldn't ask for more, well, maybe a happy hour? And maybe more whiskey options than just the "old fashioned"-esque drink. "Spherifications" Spheres of mojitos that burst with flavor on your tongue? Yes, please. These were so good we had another round of clear balls in the spicy cucumber flavor. They also have a watermelon flavor we didn't get to try. YOU MUST TRY THESE! Nitrogen Tasty drink that is somewhat frozen and includes a spoon to eat it. We had the Spicy Margarita (which thankfully wasn't too spicy) it was a delightful little drink with a vibrant flavor profile. They also have a white russian version that I'd like to try next time. Specials Ferrari - don't remember but this might be the fernet drink Rose Galaxy - Absolutely delicious, a watermelon (?) vodka based drink with other flavors that I can't quite figure out - maybe rose? - a delicious foam and salty nitrogen bits on top. Russian Bride - This was yummmmmmy. It tasted like a very strong frozen coffee drink topped with cream. Aphros Rum based drink with mango and vanilla foam - light and refreshing Abelongo Fresh muddled raspberries (puree?) are the star of this drink - I just remember that I loved it. Goes down easy. Henry's Old Fashioned A tried and true classic with a twist - they flame a piece of serrano ham to add a beautiful salty contrast to the drink. Down the Rabbit Hole Probably my favorite drink and this concoction is layered with crazy flavors and it freaking works. The kicker is that this is a gin based drink and I HATE GIN but in this drink you can barely taste the gin instead the other (complex) flavors come through - cocoa, hibiscus, and blood orange. Freaking delicious. After getting a spherification you need to get this drink. I still HATE GIN but love this drink. Yup, my feelings about Gin are as complicated as this drink is. Ugh, why do I love you so much Rabbit Hole? So confusing. Very apropos, this drink is a reference to Alice in Wonderland and the ingredients come in a lovely bottle that has a "Pour Me"sign on it. read more

We were all dressed nice to go out, I was in a nice dress with dressy sandals and we were told we couldn't enter because women are required to wear heels only.
