Sliders
David J.

We chose Cellar on Penn as a new place for an informal Sunday dinner. We had reservations, but they weren't necessary since the place was totally empty when we arrived. We were seated immediately and ordered the first round of drinks quickly. Due to the empty dining room we were cautious in ordering, avoiding seafood and anything that would be complicated to prepare. We both got the sliders with fries, which were very good. Since it's a wine cellar we tried a few of the many offerings. I've invested lots of money in tuition, learning about wines of the world. We tried two reds and one white, all of which were pretty decent, and the prices were very reasonable. The wines were not great, but they weren't expected to be. Service was fine, but the place was empty, so there was no challenge. We'll probably return to try it on a busy night. See

Fried ravioli is delicious
Tabitha S.

It was a wonderful experience. The fried ravioli were delicious, the service was excellent, and it was a wonderfully intimate setting. My husband, his friend, and I enjoyed the time we were there (even though we had to leave because of the air quality). We will definitely be going back sometime and enjoy our time a bit longer.

Steak Frites

We understand that we were a big group but that is outside of that this review. We sat down and were immediately told they were out of very basic things, bread, olive oil, prosciutto, slider buns, brie MID MEAL, and I can only assume pasta half way through the meal give half of us got the same dish and it was all different pasta shapes. They said it was because they had three big parties... the restaurant was empty even with the big tables. It took far too long for us to even get seen let alone get our food. I am all for small family businesses and most of the group currently works in Food and Bev and understand it can be tricky but this is not an excuse. We had to ask several times if the stuff we ordered would be coming and every time we asked we felt we were an inconvenience just for asking for the bare minimum. As a customer service worker i know even when customers are yelling at me I cannot roll my eyes but this doesn't seem to be standard here. We lost our waitress half way through and had to ask several others who seemed to not fully understand what was being asked and didn't seem to have the same things written down in our order. Overall the staff and experience was not good and I would not recommend anyone close to me come here. Now for the food. I am not even sure where to start here. I was excited when looking at the menu...I love italian and everything online looked good but then we actually got there and tasted it. I am not sure if a something labeled "Brie Wheel" should be a wheel but it was only a quarter of a wheel. Our "Large" cheese plate was so small I can't imagine what the small is. We got this cheese plate because they ran out of brie and it took them 30 minutes just to let us know. We all ordered pasta and half of it came out 10 minutes before the rest of the food. What came out first was cold and almost inedible due to the temp. They placed meals without crab at the wrong seat and if someone ate it they could've gotten very sick. We asked for the cold temp to be fixed but it seemed the solution was just microwaving it. What came second was the same pasta dish "Capellini" as the first "round" but came in several different pasta shapes. The french onion soup tasted like the Atlantic and the whole table tasted it and coughed due to the taste. The char salad seemed as though it was set on fire and not in a cute way. It was also supposed to have chicken and there was not a piece in site. The steak which was supposed to be a nice 8oz sirloin steak cooked medium came out looking like a salisbury steak from a microwaved meal that was cooked WELLLLL done. Fries were okay. Management gave us a free dessert but sadly this could not make up for what happened. Overall we went in with excitement. It was our friend birthday and we were so excited to celebrate her but it became a bad night when it took us 2 hours to "enjoy" a bad meal. Due to what else I see on this yelp page I think management really needs to sit down with their staff and reconsider how their restaurant is being run. I could see this place doing great things but not at this rate I can't see it staying open for much longer due to how embarrassing it was. The solution to these problems should not be comped meals. It should be done the right the first time. Side note: wine was good. Go only for the wine.

When bike PGH had their open streets event R winery was handing out free sangria slushies so I stopped to try one. They are really good. I also enjoy their dessert wine the ambrosia. The staff is nice. Chef Rachel is a pretty good cook, she made my salmon and my pasta and both were delicious. The restaurant is so cute as well, perfect for a date.

Wine tasting samples of red wines

The cutest place nestled in the heart of the strip district on the vintner of Penn ave, very unassuming. Walking in you walk down the stairs and it is a rustic cellar set up with cute decor. I sat at the bar and decided to do wine tasting and discovered their wines are made locally. The church wine is my all time favorite!!! The charcuterie was delightful, the staff was friendly!!! Night or day this is a great place to visit for amazing food and great wine and the most amazing music ever playing the greats like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, etc....

Steak

Walking around the Strip district of Pittsburgh, we encountered this nice place located in the basement. We were a bit suspicious of the emptiness of the restraunt, but decided to dine there. We ordered the steak and capellini. The steak was tender and flavorful, while the meat was definitely quality. The capellini was a pasta dish made with their wine and was delicious. Don't be fooled by the small dinner menu since they focus on quality. The food came out a bit slow, but expected to create a quality dish.

It sells a variety of dry and sweet wines (e.g., red, white, rose, sparkling, and cider), cocktails, mocktails, and beers. Some vineyards are on the grounds as are many barrels and bottles of wines. The restaurant has both indoor seating and seasonal outdoor seating in lakeside cabanas and winter igloos. It is open for brunch/lunch and dinner. It is a nice setting for daily dining as well as special events such as weddings, bridal and baby showers, and private parties. Furthermore, the website lists activities such as bingo, painting and candle-making classes, live music with dancing, and more. For my husband and me, I made a reservation for lunch in an igloo. Our igloo was large enough to fit eight people and cost $50 plus foods and drinks. A larger "party dome" fits up to 14 people and has a fee of $75. The temperatures outside were very cold, but our igloo was kept warm by an electric fireplace and a zippered door. Throughout our meal, our waitress provided timely and friendly service. The Bistro menu listed shareables (e.g., pretzel sticks and charcuterie board), several smash burgers, several flatbreads, mains (e.g., fish and chips, cajun chicken pasta, and quinoa bowl), several salads, several handhelds (e.g., turkey melt, veggie wrap, and Italian panini), many sides, and a couple of desserts. Prices were moderate. (The menus for Sunday Brunch and a group Gathering differ.) The waitress first brought our Sweet Wine-Cookie Flight (4.5 stars), which consisted of the following pairs: Diamond Reo with Brown Sugar Pop Tart, Sweet Finley with Chocolate Salted Caramel, Riesling with Cookies and Cream, and Rose Cider with Strawberry Crunch. The wine glasses came in a wooden box, which was slightly too small, so I needed several minutes of time to carefully pull each wine glass out of the box. I, however, did enjoy the sweet flavors of the wines and cookies. Next our waitress brought out our shareable and two mains. The Hummus Plate (4.5 stars) consisted of fresh and tasty hummus, feta, olives, top seedz crackers, tomatoes, cucumbers, green and red peppers, carrots, celery, and tzatziki. My main course was Crab Cakes (4 stars) with a substituted side of salad. Two crab cakes were a decent size of 4 ounces each, but I would have preferred more crab meat. I liked the garlic aioli. My husband's main course was the Cali Burger (4 stars) with a side of fries. In a brioche bun, a beef patty was topped with fontina cheese, applewood-smoked bacon (which he would prefer be crispier), avocado, avocado ranch, lettuce, and pickles (which he commented were nicely crunchy and sweet-sour) (no tomato at his request). The total price for the flight, shareable, two mains, and a soda was $98 plus sales tax and tip (plus the earlier $50 fee for the igloo).

My husband and I ate one lunch here. An employee very promptly and courteously served us. Here are my ratings for what we ate: Charcuterie Nordic Board - 5 stars - We got the "Serf's Meal" for 1-2 people, but much larger boards are available. It consisted of cured meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables with dip, dried fruits, crackers, breads, and nuts. It was our favorite food here, and I highly recommend ordering it. Gatherer Flatbread - 4.5 stars - This thin-crust pizza was topped with sauce, mozzarella, tomato, mushroom, spinach, roasted red pepper, and red onion. It was the perfect size for me to eat. Eat it promptly before it gets slightly soggy. Coastal Warmth Lobster Roll - 4.5 stars - This Connecticut lobster roll was served warm with butter. My husband liked the amount of meat and its flavor. Eat it promptly before the lobster meat gets rubbery. Drink Flight - 5 stars - A flight consists of four 3.5-ounce pours. You get to choose from dozens of dry, semi-sweet, and sweet meads, wines, and hard ciders as well as beers. One of the flavors that I wanted was out of stock, but I greatly enjoyed the sweet Banana Berry hard cider, Late Harvest hard cider, Flagship Niagara white wine, and Pink Lemonade mead. Considered the oldest of all alcohols, the Vikings used mead in religious rituals, weddings, funerals, and other ceremonies. KingView sources its honey from local beekeepers and donates a percentage of all sales to fight the declining bee population. When we entered the winery, we were greeted by Michael Kavic (owner). He asked if this was our first visit, and when we told him it was, we were invited to sit down for a wine tasting. The wine tasting was amazing! He first gave us a flight of white wine (6) and told us about each one. In addition to the wine, he provided us with cheese and crackers. The whites were tastefully crafted and absolutely devine. After we finished with the whites, he brought us the red flight. We were able to try 4 of the 6 red varieties because they were out of the other 2. Michael Stephen was so friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. After trying the wines, his wife gave us forms in case we wanted to order anything. We ordered a bottle of white and a bottle of blush wine to take home with us.
