We went with a beer flight to sample a variety of beers and two free wine pours (peach apricot Chardonnay and pomegranate). All the beers and wines were great. Our favorites in the beer flight were the peanut butter porter and Apple Mine Drainage. I ended up buying some bottles of wine to take home. As I purchased these, the staff went above and beyond offering to carry the box to the car for us, even though that wasn't necessary. I look forward to returning the next time I'm in the area to try some of their other seasonal beers. They also have a nice porch and patio outdoor seating area for the spring and summer months. My mom wants to check out the greenhouse too. My only complaint (and it's a small one) was that I was unable to purchase a bottle of the pomegranate wine. It was awesome, and I was hoping to buy a bottle of it as a gift for a friend.

Figured, "what the heck, I like wine!" What I found was a totally unexpected and wonderful experience. Most smaller mom 'n pop wineries are just not that good. Especially those outside the normally expected areas like Napa, Russian River Valley, etc. The ambiance is both country and modern at the same time. Meaning clean lol. The decor and welcoming smile scream "welcome home" and at the same time subtly describe a very modern wine experience. Apparently they get their grapes from California then make wine here. And it shows. This is the first Pinot Noir I've had outside Oregon that was actually good! The Montepulciano was very good too! I will admit I only tried one sampling of each of the reds and over half were great. Which is saying something. Also nice was the simple yet tasty charcuterie service. The presentation was simple yet appropriate. Sitting outside, enjoying the Sun and countryside just made the experience a visit to remember. If you ever want to try a local winery, sit at a relaxed venue, be served with a smile, and leave with a coups of fantastic bottles of wine, definitely make your way here. A Memorable Return to Black Sheep Vineyard - 7 Years Later…read more It's been about seven years since our last visit to Black Sheep Vineyard, and I've had the itch to return ever since. I'm so glad we made the trip back--it was even better than I remembered. Right from the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a welcoming and light-hearted atmosphere. The gentleman running the tasting room--who I believe is the owner--has a friendly, witty sense of humor that made the experience that much more enjoyable. At one point, someone told him, "We Googled wineries near me and this one popped up, so we drove over from Flushing." His deadpan response? "Sorry to hear that." We all had a good laugh. We were able to taste whatever we wanted, and I dove right in. I started with the Leighton, a dry white made from Seyval Blanc grapes--crisp, smooth, not overly tart, and just delicious. I ended up taking a bottle home. Fun fact: in 2018, this wine was $12.95, and now it's $15.95--only a $3 increase over seven years. Not bad at all for a wine of that quality. Next up was the Traminette, a semi-dry white with lovely spicy notes and a touch of citrus. Then the Riesling--aromatic, semi-sweet, and incredibly refreshing. I shifted gears to reds with the Vivian, a dry red made from Frontenac grapes, named after the owner's wife's parents. It's aged first in stainless steel and then for 60 days in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels. It has a smooth, unique finish with a slight tartness that really worked well--I even grabbed a glass of it to enjoy after my tasting. From there, I tried the Cabernet Franc, a lighter-bodied dry red aged in American oak barrels. It had a beautiful spice and peppery aroma--complex, yet very drinkable. Then came the Dark Continent, a bold and smoky dry red made from Marechal Foch grapes. Earthy and robust, this one's a must-try if you like darker, deeper reds. Finally, I had a sample of Hair of the Dog, a semi-sweet red blend made from Frontenac and other French hybrid grapes, also aged in American oak. It had a nice smoky backbone with a pop of berry sweetness at the finish--a really fun and flavorful wine. I learned that some of their grapes are sourced from Erie, PA, and I'm not quite sure what varietals they grow on-site, but it's clear they take pride in crafting each wine with care. Black Sheep Vineyard is definitely worth the visit--whether you're stopping by for a tasting or simply want to share a glass with a friend. The wines are solid across the board, the staff is warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere is relaxed and filled with personality. Can't wait to come back again--just hopefully not in another seven years!

Visited here for the first time over the Thanksgiving holiday…read more Vineyards is a bit off the beaten path, about 15 miles south of Youngstown. The Tasting Restaurant can be found down a long drive through the vineyards, passed a round-a-about and perching above the Pine Lake. It definitely has a country club vibe to it. It's a little bit of a hike from the lot to the door, so you may find it necessary to drop off your party at the door. Our party was seated on the patio. It was heated, but there are many windows that give you a great view of the lake. It was a pretty chilly spot in late November, so bring a cardigan. Service was efficient and present, but not too bothersome. A couple in our party ordered flights so that we could try a nice selection of their wines. We enjoyed the Gold Medal and Fruit Lovers flights on this occasion. I have found that at many Ohio wineries you are best off trying sweeter wines, as getting those bold, dry grapes is harder than in other parts of the country. Though I enjoyed the Berry Patch and Midnight Vines, the Pinot Noir was also impressive. Additionally, I tried the Honey Mango Jalapeno Ale. It was too many things for my palette - not my jam. For dinner I found the special stuffed pepper soup to be a hit, while the French Onion was a miss. The broth was a bit too watery and could have benefitted from a beefier au jus. The Mushroom Ravioli was a fantastic choice, particularly if you are vegetarian. While the Figgy Flatbread was good, it was a bit one note. The bread was a little thicker than I would have expected and ultimately the dish fell a little flat. I would definitely try again, but it is a bit of an adventure to get that far out of town.

It sells a variety of dry and sweet wines (e.g., red, white, rose, sparkling, and cider), cocktails, mocktails, and beers. Some vineyards are on the grounds as are many barrels and bottles of wines. The restaurant has both indoor seating and seasonal outdoor seating in lakeside cabanas and winter igloos. It is open for brunch/lunch and dinner. It is a nice setting for daily dining as well as special events such as weddings, bridal and baby showers, and private parties. Furthermore, the website lists activities such as bingo, painting and candle-making classes, live music with dancing, and more. For my husband and me, I made a reservation for lunch in an igloo. Our igloo was large enough to fit eight people and cost $50 plus foods and drinks. A larger "party dome" fits up to 14 people and has a fee of $75. The temperatures outside were very cold, but our igloo was kept warm by an electric fireplace and a zippered door. Throughout our meal, our waitress provided timely and friendly service. The Bistro menu listed shareables (e.g., pretzel sticks and charcuterie board), several smash burgers, several flatbreads, mains (e.g., fish and chips, cajun chicken pasta, and quinoa bowl), several salads, several handhelds (e.g., turkey melt, veggie wrap, and Italian panini), many sides, and a couple of desserts. Prices were moderate. (The menus for Sunday Brunch and a group Gathering differ.) The waitress first brought our Sweet Wine-Cookie Flight (4.5 stars), which consisted of the following pairs: Diamond Reo with Brown Sugar Pop Tart, Sweet Finley with Chocolate Salted Caramel, Riesling with Cookies and Cream, and Rose Cider with Strawberry Crunch. The wine glasses came in a wooden box, which was slightly too small, so I needed several minutes of time to carefully pull each wine glass out of the box. I, however, did enjoy the sweet flavors of the wines and cookies. Next our waitress brought out our shareable and two mains. The Hummus Plate (4.5 stars) consisted of fresh and tasty hummus, feta, olives, top seedz crackers, tomatoes, cucumbers, green and red peppers, carrots, celery, and tzatziki. My main course was Crab Cakes (4 stars) with a substituted side of salad. Two crab cakes were a decent size of 4 ounces each, but I would have preferred more crab meat. I liked the garlic aioli. My husband's main course was the Cali Burger (4 stars) with a side of fries. In a brioche bun, a beef patty was topped with fontina cheese, applewood-smoked bacon (which he would prefer be crispier), avocado, avocado ranch, lettuce, and pickles (which he commented were nicely crunchy and sweet-sour) (no tomato at his request). The total price for the flight, shareable, two mains, and a soda was $98 plus sales tax and tip (plus the earlier $50 fee for the igloo).
