Me in front of the winery

This was our first visit to the winery. We seen it had popped up recently. Then it popped up on the Laurel Highlands Pour Tour. I said we have to go. We love wineries in barns. It's 54 minutes from the south hills of Pittsburgh but worth the drive. When you arrive they have spacious parking. Lots of red small barns in the back of the property. In addition to a stage that they are building. Appears that this was once a theater. When you enter the building it's the the left of the building on the side. They have igloos that you can rent to sit in. I assume when the weather warms up more availability outside will provide more seating. Inside it's a decent size for seats. It's warm and cozy inside the red barn. Long bar area. You take a seat and they will come out and help you. They have wine flights, moonshine flights from our local winery Giant Oaks. In addition to local beer from Noble Stein in Indiana, Sobels from Jeanette, Hazy from Helltown and a couple other random beers but from PA. The flights are by dry, red, white and it's 4 nice size pours. I did the red butt asked if I can alter out the two sweet for two sets. My wife did the same on the whites. I tried the Cab, Malbec, Chambourcin Reserve and Petit Syrah. I liked them all. The Malbec had a nice aroma coming from the wine, it was a bold flavor, tasted smooth. The Cab smell was smooth and tasted very smooth ( my fav), Petit had a dry but flavorful taste but the Chambourcin was dry and a little tart. My wife's wines were good. The Seyval smelled unique and had a good taste. The Pinot Grigio didn't throw off many aromas but was very good. Overall great experience with the wines. I noticed the stainless steel tanks in the back room when you walk to the restroom. They also offer a small section of food from artichoke dip, flatbread, stuffed peppers to a cheese tray. All good options. We had the flatbread and it tasted good. Helped with the wine sampling. This place just opened and they are still building out. Such as the wine sign that I pose in front of us coming soon. Which means we need to return. Overall great experience and we will be back more often.

Went on a brewery tour tonight and stopped at Red Barn mostly for my wife. (She's not a beer drinker.) Holy cow...loved this place! I think the person who met us at the bar for wine tasting was the owner. He was really good...took his time with us to let us try pretty much every wine they made. And if you're not into wine that's OK...they had a really good selection of local craft beers to hold your attention. And while we didn't order any food they had a nice diverse menu of appetizers to keep your belly happy. Made me sad that I ate dinner before going out. Lastly the venue itself is literally an old barn that was converted into a theater and converted again into the winery. They have a nice outdoor area that I can't wait to check out when it warms up. And tonight they had live music that was excellent...not so loud that you couldn't carry on a conversation, but loud enough to notice that they were good. We'll go back for sure and it's worth just making an entire evening out of visiting Red Barn.

We rented an igloo with the kids for Valentine's Day and it was really spacious inside.

Bella Terra Vineyards is a winery, restaurant, and event venue in the small town of Hunker in…read moreWestmoreland County. It sells a variety of dry and sweet wines (e.g., red, white, rose, sparkling, and cider), cocktails, mocktails, and beers. Some vineyards are on the grounds as are many barrels and bottles of wines. The restaurant has both indoor seating and seasonal outdoor seating in lakeside cabanas and winter igloos. It is open for brunch/lunch and dinner. It is a nice setting for daily dining as well as special events such as weddings, bridal and baby showers, and private parties. Furthermore, the website lists activities such as bingo, painting and candle-making classes, live music with dancing, and more. For my husband and me, I made a reservation for lunch in an igloo. Our igloo was large enough to fit eight people and cost $50 plus foods and drinks. A larger "party dome" fits up to 14 people and has a fee of $75. The temperatures outside were very cold, but our igloo was kept warm by an electric fireplace and a zippered door. Throughout our meal, our waitress provided timely and friendly service. The Bistro menu listed shareables (e.g., pretzel sticks and charcuterie board), several smash burgers, several flatbreads, mains (e.g., fish and chips, cajun chicken pasta, and quinoa bowl), several salads, several handhelds (e.g., turkey melt, veggie wrap, and Italian panini), many sides, and a couple of desserts. Prices were moderate. (The menus for Sunday Brunch and a group Gathering differ.) The waitress first brought our Sweet Wine-Cookie Flight (4.5 stars), which consisted of the following pairs: Diamond Reo with Brown Sugar Pop Tart, Sweet Finley with Chocolate Salted Caramel, Riesling with Cookies and Cream, and Rose Cider with Strawberry Crunch. The wine glasses came in a wooden box, which was slightly too small, so I needed several minutes of time to carefully pull each wine glass out of the box. I, however, did enjoy the sweet flavors of the wines and cookies. Next our waitress brought out our shareable and two mains. The Hummus Plate (4.5 stars) consisted of fresh and tasty hummus, feta, olives, top seedz crackers, tomatoes, cucumbers, green and red peppers, carrots, celery, and tzatziki. My main course was Crab Cakes (4 stars) with a substituted side of salad. Two crab cakes were a decent size of 4 ounces each, but I would have preferred more crab meat. I liked the garlic aioli. My husband's main course was the Cali Burger (4 stars) with a side of fries. In a brioche bun, a beef patty was topped with fontina cheese, applewood-smoked bacon (which he would prefer be crispier), avocado, avocado ranch, lettuce, and pickles (which he commented were nicely crunchy and sweet-sour) (no tomato at his request). The total price for the flight, shareable, two mains, and a soda was $98 plus sales tax and tip (plus the earlier $50 fee for the igloo).

I had no real idea what to expect in terms of the building, but I was familiar with their wines. There is a sign for the winery at the end of the road and you enter up a long driveway (with several signs warning about not bringing in outside food and drink). I had no idea that their grounds were as massive as they were! There was even a sign for a walking trail. I visited on a Monday in the winter, so I wasn't able to take advantage of their beautiful grounds, but after a great visit, I definitely want to come back in warmer weather and come for one of their events (or even just to enjoy some wine outdoors). They have a nice variety of wines. Many sweet, dry and fruit wines. They also have cocktails and other drinks. I like that more of the specialty establishments are starting to have extended offerings because it makes visiting more accessible to people who might not like wine or beer but still want to enjoy the company of someone who does or a specific event. I went in set on getting a wine slushie (they rotate their flavors, but every one I've tried has been delicious). They allow you to sample basically anything from their menu and you can order wine by the glass, bottle or as tasting flights. When I was there, they were still offering their Valentine's pairing which included four generous pours of red wines each paired with a gourmet chocolate. I really enjoyed the experience and everything was tasty. The service was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I asked questions about the wines, where the grapes are grown, how they come up with new blends and about events and they answered all of them. Overall, an amazing experience and a place I'll definitely be back to.
