That phone number I gave to all of my friends and family turned out to be one number short making the phone unusable. Despite their claim of "checking their records" Their employee Jason confirmed that the paperwork sent was incorrect. I wish this service would work since it would be a great product but the execution and follow through is terrible. Stay away. The device that arrived didn't power on. When I tried to contact the company by phone, email, and chat, I could only reach chat. The folks on chat said they can't help and I need to call. But they don't answer the phone. I gave up and requested a refund since the cost was $297. I returned the non-functioning device but they never refunded me so I disputed the charge with my bank. At this point the chat person agreed to accept the dispute since they had received the device back from me, but then they challenged the dispute and are fighting me months later. I literally have their acknowledgement of the error on their side in writing and am now going back to my bank to resolve this. When I asked chat to help again, they said they can only talk to the accountant who only works on Fridays. read more

i odered a mifi LTE device to boost coverage in Italy . The device was not configured for that use. When I tried to connect I got messages that the connection was not secure and my phone wouldn't work at all. I never used the device and tech support suggested I install the SIM card into my phone. I did not want to put an unsecured device in my phone. I returned the device when I returned to US. I have been waiting for a refund since September 20th. Very poor customer service and a useless device. I hope this will be resolved soon and a full refund will be made. read more

I ordered a modem to be used for 3 weeks in Argentina, and after two days there (Buenos Aires) the mobil wifi connections were awful, I called their office and the sales "customer" rep, Michael, told me that it is due to the Argentinian INFRASTRUCTURE. I replied if thats the case why would you sell me knowing I would run into these difficulties with no answer. After my return to the US, I called them and said please adjust my charge, and even though I paid for 30 days, and it basically didnt work at all as per advertised, I agreed to pay for 7 days, but wanted a refund. I reached out to them several times with NO answer. So I kept the modem, waiting for this company to satisfy my request. I kept the modem waiting and waiting, until I saw an AMEX charge of $299 for a replacement. I called, said I would send the modem back, and the CUSTOMER REP, replied "Too late, we bought a replacement" I disputed the charge with AMEX, and after a month Amex came back and said I didnt follow the "contract" with Cellular Abroad. While in the Dordogne region of France, Cellular Abroad's SIM card did not allow me to: *make calls to any France phone number *use a GPS function while driving. They knew what kind of phone I had (Samsung). I was able to use What's App and Talkatone when connected to Wifi, but this was only part of what they promised. read more

Cellular Abroad gets 3 stars because they really do fulfill an important function, but they were slow to address their mistakes while I was abroad. First things first, Cellular Abroad really does provide functioning SIM cards and service abroad. That's a good service and worth paying for if you don't want to navigate a new carrier every time you travel internationally. I ordered 2 SIM cards and 2 plans, one for each SIM card. Cellular Abroad mistakenly applied both plans to the same SIM card. That's not why I give 3 stars; mistakes happen. The important thing is how quickly they are addressed. Cellular Abroad didn't get back to me for a full 60 hours, during which time I needed cell service. As a result, I purchased cell coverage myself with my own funds. I rented a flip phone for a trip to Cuba (January 2020), and was largely unable to make phone calls. I'm not sure if the problem was with Cuba or Cellular Abroad, but only one call out of 7 attempts actually worked. (and only one text out of 15). I tried to check the phone out before i left, but it didn't work in the US (and i couldn't call customer service, because they are only open during business hours). After it didn't work the first day in Cuba, I was able to use someone else's phone to email customer service, and they said they reset the account. It only worked once, then stopped working. I gave up (i'm on vacation:)). Honestly, the people in my group who just used their iPhones and US service (Verizon) probably saved money (at $3/minute) and frustration (since they only made a few calls). I would not recommend a flip phone from Cellular Abroad for trips to Cuba. read more

I'm in Germany for 10 days of travel. I have an iPhone 7. Major communication problems over the weekend. Why aren't they open 24/7??? They did reply to email inquires and I was still unable to access the cellular data, it was very frustrating because, (1) the rep that replied to my emai gave me the wrong info to put in my Network selections setting under settings on my phone, I'm an IT professional, how hard can it be??, this was Saturday. I then waiting til Monday after 11am Germany time to do chat, this time the rep gave me the correct info to add to the APN (globaldata) instead of (mobiledata), problem #1 solved. (2). I've had the SIM card for over a year and the U.S. number was not working, chatted again with the rep, he informed me to dial *160# and send to check to see what my U.S. number actually was, totally different than what was on the envelope shipped with the SIM card. All is working find now. Just FYI - sim/data cards for China do not come with voicemail capability, in case that is an important feature for you. I spent some time with the China phone company (with help from a Chinese friend), and they told us that the number on the sim from CellularAbroad does not allow for voicemail. The response from CellularAbroad customer service was neither helpful nor apologetic - more of a "too bad you're on your own" reply. Also, I haven't been able to receive calls on the US number paired to this CellularAbroad sim card yet, another key reason why I purchased this sim. Probably better renting a phone to use, although I'm not certain whether or not that would come with functional voicemail or not. read more

There is literally nothing redeeming about this company and their services. Their products do not work. Their customer service does not respond. Their refund policy is impossible to uphold (duh, that's by design to keep your payment in full). Do not use this company for any service, for any reason. The men who are failing miserably at running this business are rude, aggressive, and dishonest. Jonathan, their customer service rep, very literally called me a liar and hung up on me when I called to say their routers did not work in Italy as promised. I'm gonna write that again in caps in case you missed it: WHEN CALLING TO REPORT THEIR ROUTER DID NOT WORK CORRECTLY ON MY TRIP, THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE REP CALLED ME A LIAR AND HUNG UP ON ME. I've never worked as a rep, but I'm fairly sure that's the opposite of customer service. The owner, Scott, did not respond to any of my emails or calls regarding my experience with their products AND my experience with their customer service until I complained to the Better Business Bureau. Even then, he wrote combative responses riddled with lies. I eventually had to dispute their charge with my Credit Card company because they refused to apologize or refund any portion of my cost - I ultimately won that dispute because, very simply, their routers DO NOT WORK and they do not make any efforts to remedy that fact. This company is run by money-hungry jerks who figured out that they can ask for payment in full up front and then uphold no commitment to their customers if something goes wrong. Asking for full payment upfront and having no storefront should have been my first clue. Doing dishonest business this way probably works short term if you have no moral compass and shady business ethics (see above, Scott and Jonathan), but I trust that bad behavior always catches up to people - I look forward to that karma kicking in down the road for these guys. read more

The experience, from our initial contact with their Customer Service to the completion of our trip was amazing. We were extremely pleased with Cellular Abroad. We ordered the Phone 1 week prior to our trip and received it activated and ready to go on the day before our departure. June 2023. Impressed by detailed questions and clear answers I asked Sebastian before renting. The iPhone 6s worked perfectly in France for 2 wks, no probs. Really surprised, however, by the confusing and conflicting instructions for returning the phone with my accounts, apps, photos, and passwords cleared. (A $500 charge would be made if phone was returned with accounts, pswds, etc. still on the phone.) I tried the clearing instructions provided with the phone. Didn't clear anything and kept sending me in endless loops trying to log into my iCloud account. Called Sebastian, he sent a link to an Apple help page and said to call Apple Tech Support or visit an Apple store, since they knew more about the phones than Cellular Abroad did. REEEELY? I should spend time with Apple trying to clear Cellular Abroad's product? Apple asked me exactly what I wanted to clear from the phone, since there are several areas of the phone to clear - photos, accounts, pswds, and others. I was afraid we might accidently clear out the France telephone service originally installed by Cellular Abroad, which I thought might trigger the $500 fine. I called Sebastian to clarify what constituted, in their terms, being "cleared". No return call, just 2 snotty-toned emails, which said he did not know why I was having this problem; and that almost every iPhone user knows how to clear a phone. In otherwords, I'm stupid. I finally figured out how to clear the phone , but it took a 3rd set of instructions he sent, all different from one another, to finally get the phone in what appeared to be the same state as when I rec'd it. The thing that Sebastian's instructions never stated anywhere was in order to do this, the phone had to be at least 50% charged. Well stupid me until I finally dug this up on some help website. SO if you're really a phone techie and can handle "small" issues like this as well as other big issues, such as what other reviewers have had with C.A. phones, and you love really unhelpful customer service, go ahead and rent from them. I purchased two SIM cards from Cellular Abroad for 3 weeks of travel in Italy. They worked perfectly, just as advertised: upon landing, the cell phone service was available, and nowhere did I have any trouble with signal. As someone who travels to Italy every year (and is of Italian descent, and can speak the language as it was my first), I can tell you that buying a SIM card in Italy is not so easy (it used to be, but not any more)! The plans are complicated, they are constantly changing with various promotions, and being able to maneuver when you enter a shop and they start trying to convince you to get this or that service (often things you don't want) is difficult, even for a native speaker. Furthermore, once you buy the SIM card, some time generally has to go by before it activates, and by that time you've left the shop. If it doesn't work, you'll need to go back to that shop (and hope to find the same salesperson) as others may or may not help you as you might expect. Finally, if you're in a big city, the shops will typically be busy, and after waiting 20-30 minutes to get to the front of the line (and having lots of others now behind you), you will feel some pressure to make quick decisions and you won't have the luxury of having the salesperson take their time in explaining everything to you. I know all this from painful experience! Enter Cellular Abroad. The service is simple: you buy a SIM card before you leave the US, and you get a certain budget of minutes for calls within Italy, for calls to the USA, and for data. The budget is quite generous (even for the basic "Tourist Plan", which is what I got); for most people, you will not come close to running out; but if you do, you can always add minutes. The cost is very reasonable; getting a SIM card with a similar budget in Italy may be cheaper, but not significantly so (and the benefits, especially just the ease and simplicity of Cellular Abroad's service, clearly outweigh the extra cost, in my opinion). You'll have a known phone number before leaving the US (which you won't if you buy the SIM card in Italy), and it will work as soon as you land - at least it did for me, flawlessly. Before leaving for my trip, I had a number of questions for the Cellular Abroad staff, and they spent quite a bit of time with me explaining the various services, options, and how things worked - very patient and very nice people! Not only will I use their service in the future, but I will recommend them to others without any hesitation. I used this company for a family trip to Italy in 2011 and the phone worked great... but I should have looked at the latest reviews here before using them again because the company apparently has gone very much downhill. I got a phone from them this summer for a 25th anniversary trip to Bora Bora (French Polynesia) with my wife. It worked fine for the first few days, then completely locked up, mid text, and wouldn't function at all. Now I understand problems happen sometimes, but here's the big issue: customer service was TERRIBLE. It took close to 48 hours and emails, Facebook messages, and phone calls from me for them to actually talk to me. When they did the customer service rep was terrible, never apologized, and kicked the problem down the line by saying he had a call in to tech services. Guess what? Another day went by without an answer. Then another. Thank goodness I brought my Sprint phone with me on a whim, the one Sprint said wouldn't work- and it worked (with crazy rates of course!). But if not for that, my 25th wedding anniversary would have been ruined because my wife and I had no other way to stay in constant touch with our kids back in the states, and my wife would have been panicked. This slow response time to emergencies is ridiculous and unacceptable. I never got the phone to work again. They did end up giving me a refund, and the person I talked to when I got back from my trip was pleasant (and was the first person to offer an apology!), but I can not recommend this company. Oh- and I should also mention that I booked the phone well before our trip. Thanks goodness I doublechecked a few weeks before, because they had no record of it. Thankfully I always save any travel receipt, so I emailed them back their own confirmation. They said the system was having problems during that time, and created a new order. So yeah, hopefully you get the phone to begin with, so you can at least get the chance to have it not work for you... read more

Cellular abroad ought to give us a refund for having given us outdated and incomplete information. We bought a SIM card for France and got instructions which were obtuse, misleading, and partially incorrect. Upon calling CA's customer service they said they would call us back but did not. After repeated calls, they finally admitted that their French connection had changed their local contact number. In order to be able to use the 1 GB data, we were without service for half of our vacation. Aside from that, CA sold us a kit for converting SIM cards which we didn't need and a tool for opening the SIM card tray which was too large for our hole! All we got was an apology and the excuse that they weren't having good rapport with Lebara, which sub-contracts with one of France's major carriers. read more

I used Cellular Abroad and purchased a sim card with data/talk/text for use in France, Belgium and The Netherlands. I found the price quite reasonable. When it was working, it was magic. I relied on the gps daily. I had two times when it didn't work and that was very disappointing. Once, when I got to France, I had the wrong APN. A quick call to customer service and my phone was working. Then, when I got to Amsterdam, I was lost and my gps wasn't working. I couldn't call customer service because of the time difference. Very disappointing. When I called customer service, though my issue was fixed within minutes and I had no further issues. I just wish Cellular Abroad could modify their documentation. I wish they would clarify instructions on setting up the APN. I assumed the numbers given for talk time, etc... were for texting. You actually have to dial the short string and you receive a text back. I just wish the instructions had been a bit clearer. Now that I've used Cellular Abroad and I know the process, I would use them again. Good job! read more

Wow, I should've checked these reviews before I rented a CA iPhone for nearly 2 weeks in the Netherlands. I tried to use the phone as soon as we touched down, but was unable to do so. When I tried to reach customer service, I discovered it runs on West Coast hours--fairly useless for a service that is for people who are abroad! After 6 pm I was finally able to reach Tech Support. After him thinking about/working on the problem for an hour or so, we determined that turning the phone on and off allowed it to access the wireless network. I had to do this several times throughout the rest of the trip, too. Later that week I ran out of data. I attempted to use the code they gave me to buy more, but it did not work. Again, I was dead in the water until 6 pm, local time, when their tech support came to work. I was careful to only use the phone for navigation as needed and to turn apps off if I wasn't using them. Nonetheless, I ended up paying ($60) for, supposedly, nearly 18 Gb of data over a 12-day trip. I will be looking for a different option next time I travel abroad. read more

They had neglected to activate it and it took over 24 hours to get hold of them via email. Was in Australia for 3 1/2 weeks - drove from Brisbane to Cairns and back. I travel often for work and when I do I try to get a local SIM card. In this case, I purchased a SIM card for the United States to put in my phone, mostly for GPS. The service, on the US carrier AT&T, was very fast and the coverage was good. The customer service for Cellular Abroad was courteous and knowledgeable. I recommend this company. read more

I would give Cellular Abroad 0 stars as a review if I could! They deleted or hid my last review on Facebook. I used their service in Nov of 2017 and we lost service in a remote area in Italy on a 2.5 week trip halfway in. They have terrible and inaccurate advertising, stating it's "unlimited" service but it's only 9GB. The customer service rep, who I later found out is the CEO, is rude, nasty and unhelpful. He actually hung up on me during a call and refused to refund me my money when we ran out of service! I would never recommend them to anyone!!! Do not use them!!! read more

Received and email back telling me to text a code to a set address upon arrival. Did as instructed and received a message cannot complete not enough in account. I purchased the Cellular Abroad SIM card because It will stay active as long as I use once per year, and it is easy to add time via their web site. My previous SIM card (EE in the United Kingdom) had to be used at least once every couple of months and was not easy to add time. The UK number has been very helpful and economical when we travel to Europe. However, the US number on the SIM card does not work. It will not receive text messages, and if someone calls the number, they get a message 'invalid extension'. I have tried a couple of times to e-mail customer service, but they do not respond. I rented a Deluxe phone for a trip to Italy at the end of May. According to their website, the phone should have shipped a few days before my trip - fully charged and ready to go. Instead 2 days after I rented the phone (the 3rd of March), I get an email from them saying my phone has shipped already. I get on their Instant Chat and ask what was going on. "Johnathan" tells me that was an email glitch, and the phone isn't actually shipping. Twice he told me to disregard the email. Of course the phone arrives a day later. And it was not the phone I paid for. Basically they shipped me someone else's phone at the wrong time. I told him I had NO faith that his company would be able to get me the correct phone at the correct time. He told me they would cancel the contract, but no refunds would be issued until I sent them their phone back. They already have my credit card - so they have a way to make sure they get payment if I didn't return this little phone. I told them I thought that was a shoddy way to do business. I am out $158 because of THEIR MISTAKE, and they will not refund it until they receive their phone back. If you like throwing away your money, this is the company for you. Terrible service. My wife got a SIM card from them for a trip to Cuba last March. We were in Cuba for a week and had to call them repeatedly because the sim did not work. I incurred over $100 in long distance bills on my cell. We returned the sim a week after returning from Cuba in March and they have refused to refund any portion of our money, much less all of it. Unfortunately, giving a 0 star rating is no an option. If you would like a cell phone that allows you to make phone calls from international destinations and would like reliable/available customer service should something go wrong with your phone, I would not recommend Cellular Abroad (CA). I rented a phone from CA back in December for use in Thailand. When I arrived in Thailand, I found the phone was unable to connect to a network, no matter my location, and this is going to be a real shocker- I couldn't use the phone to call them to tell them there was a problem, and the 800 number doesn't work from Thailand, so I couldn't use the hotel phone either. So, I e-mailed them from my tablet using wifi at the hotel. Each time I e-mailed, I would get an automated message back, with no actual answer for sometimes 2 days or more. None of the suggestions in the e-mails they did send solved the problem. Finally, on January 2, after multiple delayed e-mails and one attempt at solving it via Skype with my mother talking to them on the phone for me in the U.S., I gave up and requested a refund. I have never had such horrible customer service in my life. $140 for a phone and calling card, away from my child in a foreign country, and only able to be contacted when at the hotel. Don't use this company if you wish to be contacted in an emergency while out of the country. Completely unreliable. I'm sending this to National Geographic as well as they should know that they are affiliated with a crap provider. Heck, maybe they own Cellular Abroad. And, if anyone from Cellular Abroad should like to dispute anything I have said here, as they have done on other reviews, I will be happy to provide the dates/times/details of all contact attempts. read more

Worked fine for me. The sales and ordering process was smooth and we got the phone quickly. Not the fanciest piece of hardware on the market, but phone and SIM were about $100 and I just use for travel so no biggie. Had one issue with changing networks when we got to second country and Cellular Abroad customer service walked me through it. It's true that using a local SIM takes a little more effort than roaming but for us was well worth it. read more

We rented two SIM Cards for Italy. Arrived in Rome on Saturday, cards went out on Sunday. Sent an E mail to Cellular One but no one in the office on Sunday. Since the tour began on Monday had to spend Sunday finding an open TIM store , which we finally did, at Termini Station. Cost us E40 to get new plans on our phones. SIM cards worked fine. Received an apology E Mail Monday saying the Cellular One system was out during the weekend but now everything should be working fine. Too late. When we got back I sent an E Mail in response the apology E mail. No one responded. We thought the price of the rentals $80 apiece was a little high but figured National Geographic couldn't be wrong. Disappointed that Cellular One ignored our E mail. Service should be 7 days, not off weekends. I imagine it's not that way when National Geographic has a weekend problem. Next time in Italy just going to a TIM store and buy or rent a SIM card. read more

I apologize in advance for my lengthy anecdote / review. Normally I would never bother writing a review for a company, but the service I received from Cellular Abroad was so stellar that I feel compelled to tell others. If you want to skip my review, the short version is that Cellular Abroad ROCKS! Here is the deal. I was in Germany this past November. I found a great deal on a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and my son has been begging for Santa Clause to bring him this phone. I decided to purchase the phone and give it to my son for Christmas. What I did not know at the time of purchase, nor was I told by the seller, is that the phone has Samsung's new "region lock" on it. What this region lock means is that if my son were to use his U.S. based cell carrier SIM in the phone, the phone would immediately lock and become unusable without obtaining an unlock code. To further complicate things, the unlock code has to come from a Samsung customer service department within the area the phone was intended to be used. So, simply calling Samsung in the U.S., or my local cell carrier in the U.S. would not help. What I really needed to do was turn on my phone for the first time with an active SIM from the region where I bought my phone (Europe). What I did not need was a monthly account, so I wanted a Pay As You Go SIM that I could put a few Euro on, and then toss in the garbage when I was finished with it. Unfortunately, my searches on Amazon and eBay proved to be fruitless, as everything was either overly complicated, or required that I have a European mailing address. During my search, I posed a question on Amazon to one of the sellers of a European SIM. I got a response from someone who was very helpful, and gave me the phone number for Cellular Abroad. I later learned that the person who answered my question actually works for Cellular Abroad. I was waiting for the sales pitch and a hefty price to follow. Instead, when I told my story to Cellular Abroad, they were stunningly sympathetic with my problem, and wanted to help my son with being able to use his phone when he unwrapped it on Christmas morning. The guys a Cellular Abroad sent me a Pay As You Go SIM from an Italian cell phone company. They did not charge for the shipping, and didn't even ask me to pay for the credit that was on the SIM. I received the SIM, and when my son opened his phone on Christmas morning, we popped in the Italian SIM, made a phone call, the phone unlocked, and my son was absolutely thrilled. I didn't want to take advantage of Cellular Abroad's goodwill, so when I sent them the SIM back, I put some "Christmas cheer" inside of the envelope to cover everything. Cellular Abroad went out of their way to help me, a perfect stranger, without requesting so much as a penny. I can only imagine that their "business as usual" policy is nothing short of exemplary. read more

The phone didn't work as well as I wanted. So why am I writing a great review? Because as soon as I contacted them, they immediately did everything they could to make things right. I've had them since 2014 and I've never had an issue traveling abroad. The only issue I've ever had was the volume on the phone that is too low. That problem was solved as I took their sim card and placed it in my phone. read more

I bought a sim card two years ago for a trip to Japan and the Philippines. the Sim worked for just one short call from Norita airport to NY after that it found 'no service' and I had to rely on a Free WIFI SMS app ("Viber") to communicate with my then 18 year old daughter alone at home for 10 days for the first time..it was a nightmare for me! Do not use Cellular Abroad or you will regret it. I used it for a trip to panama and it did not work. I was without any communications throughout the trip and it turned into a nightmare. There is no excuse for this. I would not recommend Cellular Abroad to my worst enemy!! read more

Not worth the money. I was excited to locate a service that could help provide me telecom/text continuity while on travel to China (Shanghai, ChangZhou), Philippines (Manila), Indoesia (Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan) and Singapore. I was grossly disappointed by their service, connectivity and follow up. The phone only worked in the locations above for texts between my cell and a colleague who was traveling with me. I could not get any outboud texts to the US; none from the US (except for the last three days in Indonesia) and in general cellular connectivity anywhere until the last three days in Indonesia just didn't work. Honestly, you are better off (in my opinion) buying a SIM card at the airport for your GSM phone than relying on this service. read more

I rented a phone from Cellular Abroad for a trip to Italy and was very disappointed. I won't make that mistake again.
