There is a restaurant on property (Shaun is the chef) though we did not dine there for dinner. We stayed in the Canterbury Suite on the 2nd floor. It had a queen bed, fireplace and large soaker tub with double shower heads. The inn is only 10 minutes from Saugatuck and about 15 minutes to Holland. It is a quiet and quaint place to stay in a beautiful area of Michigan.

I got the faux gras for my first course (not a typo - faux as they use chicken livers) which had tremendous flavor. For dessert, we couldn't pick between the profiteroles and the warm tart tatin so we split them. Both were great but the tatin is an upside down French apple pie which was fantastic - served warm with vanilla gelato it was unexpectedly thin and crunchy with the crust. I can't recommend this meal highly enough. It would get six stars if possible.

We were slightly concerned when we decided to stay at the Valentine Lodge. We read several reviews…read morethat were not good at all. It's hard to say with anything regarding on-line reviews though because for every negative review you will undoubtedly find a couple positive reviews. After searching online for hotels and then B&Bs in the Saugatuck/Douglas area we were nearly scared off by the high costs of other chains and B&Bs. Then we found the Valentine Lodge. We almost couldn't believe the listed cost because of the comparables. We booked the room online and then called and spoke with the owner. From the start they were very nice people and assisted with our questions. If you are looking for the Ritz, Raddison or some other other high end chic hotel, this is not it! Go ahead stay at one of those and pay quadruple the cost for a room. If you are looking for a decent room, friendly staff and a place close to town this is a great bet for you. We arrived on a Friday afternoon to stay through Sunday and couldn't help be impressed by the size of the house. Think old world charm of a southern style mansion with a beautiful front porch on the first and second floor facing the street. The grounds were immense and well kept. We met the owner and she graciously explained their rooms, policies and assisted with the area. As we made our way up the grand staircase we were a bit awestruck buy the decor and size of the home. Yes there are a lot of paintings as she is an artist. I thought they were pretty and added to the charm of the place. We found our room on the third floor and got a bit settled in. My ONE complaint of the room was the hard bed. It didn't bother me a ton but my girlfriend wasn't thrilled. The bathroom was clean, the bedroom was clean and the decor was dated but fine. Again if you're going to pick a bed and breakfast apart for older decor you should probably be staying at a high end hotel. We enjoyed the free wifi and charm of the place. We were out late and had no problems getting in and heading to bed. The next morning we headed down for the breakfast. Everything was clean and well prepared. It looked like it may have been a family affair with everyone pitching in. The egg dish was not marked with it's ingredients, (as one reviewer lamented) I didn't care, it was delicious! There was fresh fruit, hash browns, an egg scramble, juice, water and appropriate condiments. They provide trays if you wish to eat outside on the front or back porch or even on the second floor enclosed porch. We opted for the second floor. Upon return to the kitchen area they were cleaning and making sure the guests were taken care of. From the moment we checked in until we left on Sunday the owner was friendly and helpful. It's obvious that her and some of her family live in the home because they are at your beck and call for all intensive purposes. We had a great experience at the Valentine Lodge bed and breakfast and would definitely suggest it to others. Again if B&B's aren't your thing and you expect high class amenities go to a high end place. We would definitely stay here again.

On walking up to the place, it looked very cozy, warm, and inviting. The couple who own the B&B are super nice, very helpful, and just adorable. We stayed in the Valentina Room, which is on the second floor, first door on the left. It was actually bigger than I expected and had a large king size bed. We were very comfortable there. The house itself is charming, and the walls are decorated with oil paintings done by one of the family members. There are two very large decks - one in front of the house on the ground floor and the other is a large screened in porch in the front of the house on the second floor. We used both during our stay using the main floor one to eat breakfast and the second floor one to relax, drink tea, and read books/magazines before bed. This B&B is located in Douglas, which is just a short five minute drive from downtown Saugatuck. I was glad to be a little out of town, as it was always peaceful and quiet at Valentine Lodge. There was free wi fi (we never used it), wine glasses, a corkscrew, a mini fridge, and a mini coffee pot in our room, on demand tea on the porch, and board games and books to use throughout the house. Oh, and the breakfasts were just delicious. On Sunday morning, there was toast, yogurt, three kinds of quiche, blueberry cake, fruit salad, and of course coffee and orange juice. On Monday morning, we were the only guests at the B&B and we were asked what time we wanted breakfast and were told she would make it for us whenever we wanted. That breakfast was lovely too and consisted of bagels, toast, scrambled eggs, fruit salad, yogurt, coffee, and orange juice. It was ready the moment we walked down the stairs. I highly recommend this wonderful B&B. It would be a shame to miss it.

Captain's Cottage is a quaint cottage located in the heart of downtown Grand Haven, and steps from…read morethe pier. The house is renovated, and can accommodate 4 guests in its Aftdeck suite. The house is divided into 3 different guest suites, but a large family could rent out the entire down stairs. There's also a driveway that has space for 3 cars (1 car per party). We had 2 cars, but had no problem finding parking across the street. We stayed in the Aftdeck suite, and it was spacious, and very clean. There was a king sized bed, and a pull out. There was enough room in the bedroom for an air mattress. The best part of this cottage is the proximity to the town. You are a short walk from everything. The Innkeeper was also very nice. My only complaints are there is no towel service, so you have to use the same towel all days you are there, or wash them yourself. And, it's an old house, so if your neighbors are loud, you can hear everything. This was only an issue the first night we were there. The next days the people next door were very pleasant, and abided by the "quiet time" rule that was in the handbook at the cottage. Quiet time is 11PM. Overall, I'd recommend this place to anyone! We will be going back next year!

It's nice having a small kitchen so you can cook a meal if you don't want to eat out all the time. Upon arrival there is a basket of snacks and the fridge is stocked with cold drinks. The Cottage is situated close enough so you can walk to the shops and restaurants or walk along the water. We chose to drive to the beach because of all the gear we had to bring. If you are looking for a nice quiet place to spend a few days I would definitely recommend this place.

We didn't hear them during the rest of our stay so no worries about late night cries etc. The house is beautiful and our room had a private bath with a huge jacuzzi tub. There was a window ac unit as well as a fan so we stayed comfy at night and even outside fireworks weren't too noticeable. We were a handy 10 minute walk to a multitude of restaurants and cute parks plus the river walk. There was also a parking spot at the house so we could leave the car and not worry as we walked in the city. The breakfast was especially tasty and Skylar made extra effort to accommodate our dietary needs by making something totally different for me (veggie hash with toast and yogurt all vegan). The fruit, juice and coffee for all were tastefully laid out and made for a refreshing breakfast experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and would stay here again!

Did I mention it is WALKING DISTANCE to the Van Andel??!! Note the walk back is gradually uphill. A couple that we spoke with during breakfast mentioned they also walked back. The husband said he has a bad knee and felt it a little bit on the return but would definitely do it again. Todd and Skyelar's home is beautiful and bright. We stayed in Room 2 which is also bright yet cozy at the same time. Our room had a Keurig coffee maker which was great! I will just have to remember to bring some tea with us next time as we love our tea. I didn't think to ask for any so I can't fault anyone but myself! The bath products are provided and smell amazing! I actually wrote the name of the brand down as I am going to order some for home. We really appreciated having an extra power strip in the room. The bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious with local products. Cinnamon raisin bread French toast, bacon that was perfectly prepared, fresh fruit, orange juice and hot coffee. The complimentary breakfast was so yummy and had so many healthy options. The beach was lovely, the bikes were so fun, and everyone kept a quiet atmosphere that was serene but not strict. It's the perfect location: walking distance to both downtown Saugatuck and Douglas, away from all the noise of traffic and tourists, right on Kalamazoo lake next to SS Keewatin, and a hop and skip to Oval Beach and Douglas Beach. Bonus points: best seat in the house for 4th of July fireworks. If you don't like walking, just call up the Interurban bus, which will pick you up and drop you off, wherever, whenever, for a dollar. Great food: Sally serves up great hot breakfasts. You have access to a fridge to store your own food and there's an ice machine and grill on the top deck. At the head of the parking lot, there's a little farm stand that has wonderful, well-priced, farm-fresh fruits, veggies, meats, sauces, and prepared foods. Douglas has great restaurants (Wild Dog and Everyday People) as does Saugatuck (Phil's, Hercules). Also try Crane's, just off of Blue Star Highway. Great amenities: Each room has a TV and private bathroom. The boat is air conditioned (or heated, depending on the season). Hot tub on the roof deck! And plenty of chairs to soak in the sun and view. Other notables: (could be a downside for you, but was an upside for me) probably not the greatest place for small children, given that it's on the water. And I don't think that additional, non-paying guests are allowed on (due to liability/insurance). This means peace and quiet for a good night's sleep!
