I told the assistant "I don't do well with needles" and "I don't do well with pain." Instead of listening or offering reasonable alternatives, I was dismissed. They said laughing gas "wasn't an option," and pushed ahead with the injection anyway -- despite visible signs of panic: shaking, nervousness, voice cracking, and tears being held back. The dentist applied numbing cream and tried to go in with the needle multiple times while I was clearly not okay. When I flinched or closed my mouth, they looked at each other like I was the problem. After several attempts, I muttered "this is so stupid" out of embarrassment, and they walked away -- only to return with a referral, where I was finally told "sedation is an option." Why wasn't that offered the first time I expressed concern? Comfort is not comfort when your anxiety is ignored. The doctor said, "I'm not making you do this if you don't want to," but at that point, the emotional damage was done.

Much of the hygienist staff remains the same, at least for now, so that was reassuring for me, since that's most of whom you interact with anyway. I did get to meet Dr. Emamian at the end of my cleaning. You can't tell a lot from that part of a consult, but she seemed very professional and caring. I was worried about starting with someone new after so long, but I think it will be just fine. I was glad I could still see Diane, my favorite hygienist, but it seems like some new features are being added, like online scheduling and the like. The only complaint I had was that it was absolutely freezing in there. I was so cold I was almost shivering. Offering a space heater or something would be nice. Shivering during a true dental procedure could be dangerous!

Usually I hate the X-rays because they're so rough and quick but she took her time and was very gentle. Dr Duffel was great! He was super friendly and easy to talk to. I normally have severe dental anxiety but this place eased my nerves so fast. I already scheduled my next appointment and am (for the first time) actually not dreading it!
