Came to grab a taco salad for lunch. It was pretty good, big portion, and just $6.99 on Thursday. The shell itself was not my favorite. It wasn't super crunchy and was kind of airy. There are a ton of options for the toppings. 3 types of beans, 3 types of protein, lettuce, red or green salsas, pico, guacamole, sour cream, cilantro, cheese, jalapeños, olives, and I might be missing some other options. I would say my taco salad tasted slightly bland but I would prefer that to overly salted as I can add my own salt. The service was great. Quick but friendly. I love how they wrap up the taco salad in a box to keep it all together and to prevent breaking and leaking. I'm curious to come back to try their other daily deals. read more

Dropped in to see if they had fancy butters. They do not. But they did have cool things like smoked metas that they smoke in the back, plenty of La Fermière yogurt in the red valentine day clay pots (which aren't easy to find) and cool things in the deli case like samosas and plenty of types of sandwiches. Had to run in to grab some energy drinks before am event down the street. Parking there is challenging. Some of the patrons were a bit interesting as well. This place is a great place to visit and to me it is not just some upscaled supermarket. However, yes it may appear that on the outside. Think again. I would suggest thinking a bit more out of the box. To me it has many things to offer. It is very tourist friendly and to those who live here locally it has much to offer. I have benefited it very well from this Thrift way. They offer fresh coffee, tea and different specialty drinks at the entrance way. That is a good impression to me. The coffee is ok to give a good "pick me up" feeling . As you come in you see beautiful flowers which I love because here in the Pacific Northwest we definitely need a lot of brightening up on those gray days and endless rainy days. I have personally bought a few Gerbera daisies and my husband has bought me some other flowers there. I do warn you some are pretty expensive but that is okay if you need them to say you are sorry or just to cheer yourself up or brighten the room for your guest. Next, this place offers different types of souvenirs for tourists or great gifts for different occasions. This place specializes in supporting locals with different products. It is a small building but it is big in what they offer. Their breakfast sandwiches are great! They have Cuban sandwiches! They offer offer ready to eat meals. They have very good Bbq ribs and smoked chicken/turkey. They offer so many desserts to put you on the naughty list with your doctor. Those who are into wines. I do not drink but I have friends who love their wines or beer. I love them dearly and will not judge them. They have a wide selection at Thrift-way. There is an aisle specifically for those items And they have unique chocolates and candy too. And they offer soaps and cosmetics that are local. I would recommend this place to those who are visiting Tacoma. It is awesome to me and not all visits are the same mundane visit in a typical store. It is great to get out the house and visit them. Steaks are quality and pricey but you will get your money's worth. I advise all people to come with a cute bag because it is hard to visit here and leave empty handed. Staff here are doing their job. If you come regularly, you will get to know them and know who is friendly and will guide you on your shopping experience. I have a few favorites people in there and they make me smile. I had a sweet person in there once assist me in finding some Moon pies(Banana to be exact). These snacks are quite retro and my whole family were well taking my secret stash. So one day there was a huge display of these retro treats and they were gone. But this nice employee went out of his way and found some and I bought a dozen so I can share some and hide some. I came here because again I needed groceries. And it was the second closest to hotel and work. I worked at thriftway a decade or so ago and I remember it being comparable to safeway if not a little more expensive. Well idk what happened to thriftway. Because this isn't one. It was more of an upscale Whole Foods. It was very clean and modern looking. Artisanal everything. Everything is doubled in price compared to any other grocery store. The ready to eat sammies in the deli section weee $12. For $12 at safeway you can get a whole sandwich made out of a loaf of French bread. They don't carry a large selection of cheap lunch meat. Just high end fancy shit and what is pre packed the deli. The pre made salads that are normally $3-4 were $6 But you need expensive craft beer or fancy raw meat or seafood. They got you covered too. I appreciate a good IPA selection. The staff seemed friendly and were helpful. But damn. I spent $80 here. On what normally would've have been $50 in this already inflated economy. read more

Bf went in around 9:30pm and told staff he was in a hurry and wondering where the foil was. Big mistake!!! The employee made a huge scene, calling over Dan saying Dan this guy is looking for the foil. Making fun of him as if they were accusing him of needing foil for something other than a lid to our crock pot for a pot roast. Rather than just saying foil is on isle whatever, they had to make him feel bad for asking for foil because they thought he was a druggie. This is unfortunately the closest store to our house. The staff are pretentious. They need a lesson on minding their own business and doing their very simple job without the theatrics. My bf has worked very hard on his recovery and doesn't deserve to be profiled as a druggie for asking respectfully for a simple household item. I have never had a negative experience at Thriftway as I have been there many times, today I visited on two different occasions with my father and the first visit we were being followed around by the workers in each aisle we went in which I have never experienced at this location which was an uncomfortable situation. The second visit we came around the evening as we were buying drinks and some snacks for the night and we were able to go to self checkout, we scanned our items as necessary then proceeded to pay. One of the workers whom I have never spoken with came up to us and accused us of stealing by saying "Did you guys scan your deli food?" . I replied, "yes we did" and he proceeded to reply saying "Well I don't see it in my system? Scan it again." And I showed him by scrolling on the screen to prove we in fact scanned our deli food. He walked away and as we were leaving he apologized with just a "sorry", very unprofessional. I don't always make it down to Tacoma these days, but when I do I like to stop in Thriftway. They have a respectable produce section with usually great quality. I really like that they have a sizable selection of plant-based proteins and it's one of the attractions for me...but watch those prices!!! There are somethings that are literally double what you'd pay in a "normal" grocery store or even at a Whole Foods. Who's the "whole paycheck" now?? They have my favourite cashew spread that I have a very hard time finding anywhere else (and wow, do I $$$$ pay for it!), and it's nice to be able to find treats like that and get them on occasion. I've also been able to find new products that I haven't seen anywhere else, so I always like to take my time and go through nearly all the aisles. While the store itself is quite small, they have a very nice selection of products and have utilized their space nicely. Really great selection of premade lunch-type items. This is a hidden gem in Stadium District. It is a great area to show people who have never seen Tacoma. You can stop in to grab a few ingredients to cook something. I recommend their steaks ! We had someone visit us and we had them. Wow, when that steak was done, I hit a high note I did not know that I can hit! We will definitely be buying more steaks again! They offer food cooked in a small area and desserts. And they have Cuban sandwiches sometimes. This place also has flowers, candy, wine for date nights. There is an area that sells coffee on the way in but I am quite certain it is better to shop first and enjoy your hot joe better. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I LOVE it here. The staff are so friendly! I feel like they're just my friendly neighbors cause we catch up whenever i come in. The produce is beautiful and fresh, they have a huge deli section where they have food to order (AMAZING fried chicken, soups, sandwiches etc), and a specialized cheese counter with someone there to help always. They have so many fresh predone food choices (salads, sandwiches, sushi, breakfast burritos) and they have a bakery. The desserts are amazing and they make minis for you. There is all the main brand stuff of a big chain, but also the cool specialized local stuff of a cute boutique style grocery store. Prices are a tad higher than the chain stores but I don't care I love supporting local. They also have a little coffee shop attached and their drinks are great. I love this place. This place is a hidden gem. The name does not give it credit. But today I had one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. Pastrami and Swiss sandwich. Not only was the sandwich great. The service was AWESOME. The ladies who were closing this evening (12/22/20) with Crystal and team were friendly, great spirits (even at 9pm at night) after a long day. Don't go here if you happen to be queer. Have lived a block away from this store for about Five years now and I was so excited when I first moved in to have a grocery store so close. Unfortunately even from the first time I went here I was getting side eye and abruptness and just a really bad vibe from a lot of the people that work there. Not surprisingly, since then I have not had a time that I've went in there where I've gotten a friendly polite interaction. I have had people going in front of me who did not present as queer who would have pleasant conversation with the person, started by the clerk, but the second that I or anybody I was with would come up to the counter they would shut down and look around and start conversations with coworkers and things like that. I have avoided this store because it's so unpleasant to go there, and because the prices are pretty stupid high. I thought might be better since they got a self check out but I still get grumpy looks from workers when they pass me in the isle or such. And, to be clear, this place has had the same people working there since I moved here. Its a low turnover kinda store so is the same employees I'm referring to. (I'm not a bad customer either. The jacksons just down the way has great people who I chat with and know by name and say hi when I come in.) So not very friendly and seems like they want to stay that way read more

I have bought pre-made sandwiches, but decided I had the time today and wanted to try one made fresh. I went with the vegan chicken salad. The girl was super nice and let me try it first. Really good!! Not soupy and not dry. Perfecto! I had marble rye, vegan chicken salad, lettuce, and swiss cheese (not vegan, I know. I'm a veg). Anyhow, this sandwich is $6.99 and is awesome! I don't even think it needs cheese on it. I have always loved Stadium Thriftway, their employees have been there forever, they have good food, and they're just good people. I love this little store. I call it little endearingly and not to diminish it in the least. What I love about this store are the people who work there and the fact that the store is thoughtful in stocking for the wealthy and the not so well off---howso? Among what you might expect for a smaller (not a supercenter) grocery store are higher prices. However, they often stock similar items costing less, example; toilet paper can run as high as 10 bucks in this store, but they also stock 4 rolls of cheap but usable toilet paper for $1.50. This happens for many items I buy in this little gem of a store. The produce is beautiful and displayed so well that I spend far more time in the fresh produce section than I plan! Smart retailing..very smart this builds customer loyalty. P.S. the fresh coffee bar at the front door is a great idea as well! read more

Total rockstar neighborhood grocery store. Every neighborhood should be so lucky! We are staying nearby at a bed and breakfast, realized at 8:00 pm that we had forgotten a bunch of stuff, like toothbrushes & allergy medication, so we stopped in and left with way more. They have everything you could possibly need, plus posh extras like hand-poured soy wax candles, fresh flowers, lots of wine, and fancy desserts. It was one of the few shops open late. I don't make it to Stadium Thriftway too terribly often. I'm not usually in the this part of the Stadium Neighborhood much but the few times that I have been here I have always been impressed with the variety of items, the freshness of the produce and items from the deli. It is true that the prices here are a bit steeper than some other grocery stores in town but in many instances it's because the quality is increased. Of course some of these prices have to do with the location in which this is more of an upper crust neighborhood in town too. Parking isn't too bad but it really does depend what day AND what time of day you go. Stadium Thriftway does have a parking lot but it can get filled up quickly and if that's the case then you will need to use street parking. Stadium Thfirtway is a nice grocery store. It's clean and the presentation of the products is easy to interpret. If I lived in the neighborhood I would probably shop here quite a bit more. read more

Yes, you are going to pay a premium for shopping here, but in terms of variety - taste - quality and service, you won't be disappointed. We lived across the street for 8 months and Stadium became our defacto place to eat and shop. Definitely not the place to stock up on basics - but when you are in the mood for something hot and tasty from the deli, or the beer and wine selection, this is the place to go. Staff is super friendly and the butcher section is varied and fresh. Produce selection is varied, but trends to the higher side of price, especially the organic selection. This grocery store is the best and only one in the neighborhood. I like the various hot and cold foods. I always buy the veggie samosas and the sandwiches here because it's surprisingly bomb. It's super clean and organized inside. The price of goods might be a little more compared to a Safeway but you pay for good quality.
