The guy who serviced my car should be fired. I came in with TPMS (tire pressure indicator light) on my dashboard. The guy said he will check it out, and 5 mins later said the pressure was low in all 4 wheels and he added air. I wish I got his name so I could file a formal complaint. As soon as I left, 2 miles out, the warning light came back on. I drove to the nearest Sunoco station, and the tire pressure reading was 51 psi in all 4 tires. Did the fool at Mobil station (Central garage) want to blow out all my tires? why go 7 PSI above the max pressure listed on the tire unless you want to inflict damage and possibly injury? Avoid this place for your own safety! read more

Our day trip to Lake Placid was nearly ruined when our tires picked up a few massive clumps of tar and asphalt while navigating through a road paving project in Saranac Lake. Driving faster than 30mph, and our return trip home would be impossible. The State Police recommended Central Garage, and we were rewarded with prompt, courteous repairs. On a family vacation in Lake Placid we recently had a "run in" with one of their new curbs during the curb construction project. We just bumped it and it left the tire holding air, but definitely chopped up and not suitable for a ride back downstate. We went to the Central Garage and spoke with Jay. He said he didn't have the tire in stock but to "Give him a little while." A few hours later he called and said he located a used tire that was the same make and model as the other three on the car. We dropped the car off around 6 PM and by 7:30 we were pulling away, ready for our trip home. Being that we were in a less populated area it's understandable that many places do not have a large backstock of car supplies, but the fact that Jay sought out and found a tire that could get us home safely was what really stood out. The extra effort and timeliness took a potential thorn in our vacation and turned it into a simple "bump in the road", pun intended. If you need service or a tire in the Lake Placid area I would strongly recommend going to Central Garage, as they seem to go the extra mile, and understand they are in a vacation town and want to make your experience pleasant. I would rate this place a zero out of 5 stars if possible. Jay, Jerry and the rest of the employees are crooks. Classic small town auto shop that manipulates uneducated customers, then charges them out the rear for unnecessary actions. Multiple horror stories from leaving a car with these guys and it coming back worse than original. These folks don't know the difference between a gas tank and a rear end. Not to mention the unsanitary "office", seems like you could catch Ebola hanging out in there too long. read more

We were visiting the Lake Placid region on our family vacation. We were at the first stop of a month long journey with our truck and travel trailer at campgrounds in the New England states. During our stay in Lake Placid, we ran into some major truck issues and I found Central Garage from a google search and SO glad I did!!! When I first called, it was a Sunday afternoon and knew that the Ford dealerships were closed, but saw Central Garage was open. At first call, they were very friendly and patient. Unfortunately, there was not a mechanic on duty on Sundays, but Jay (the owner) asked if we called back first thing Monday, they will get a tow out to us and try to help us get on the road as quickly as possible. (we knew that if we had to go to a dealership, they were booking over a week out!) I called back Monday and he got the tow out at the exact time he promised! (we were at a safe location with our truck at our camp, but we just could not drive the truck to him (11 miles away). By the end of the day, he had it diagnosed and the part ordered. He asked us to call back the next day to check on the progress and part. Unfortunately (at no fault to central garage) the part was not on the delivery truck by the end of the next business day, but it came first thing on Wednesday morning! They got the part installed quickly, test drove the truck and had us back on the road before lunch to our next camp!! We cannot thank Jay and the mechanics at Central Garage enough!! They literally saved our family vacation!!! read more

I had a relatively fast leak in my right front tire and drove into the Central Garage Parking lot at 4:55 PM on a Tuesday. They looked at it and confirmed I had cut my sidewall on a rock. Sidewall cuts aren't repairable. They put on a dummy tire so I could get to the mountain to ski in the morning and said come back after skiing and they would have a new tire to mount. I brought it to them at noon the next day and they had the new tire on by 1:30 PM, and the price was very reasonable. REALLY ACCOMMODATING SHOP!!!! THANKS FOR SAVING MY SKI DAY AT WHITEFACE!!!!!! After a very cold walk around Mirror Lake, I came back to my car and discovered the key fob was dead and I couldn't get into my locked car. Within 10 minutes of my call, two men from Central Garage met me at the car, and unlocked it. They replaced the battery in the key fob, and while I waited in the warm garage, they went back to pick up my car and drive it to meet me. Everyone was courteous and helpful. Thank you!! I cannot say enough good things about this garage, the owner and his employees. We were in Lake Placid on vacation when our car had an emergency repair that needed to be done before our five hour ride home with three small children! I frantically called the shop after many prior unsuccessful attempts for repair and Conlin* calmly told me to bring it there in the morning for a temporary fix and gave me the number for a shop (North Country Auto Glass- that's my next five star review!) that was able to get the job done by the last day of vacation. He even drove us to pick up the car when the work was completed! My family and I cannot thank you enough for being a wonderful person who went out of his way to help us not be stranded with no means of getting home! read more

Place is good if you want to wait 2-3 days to get your vehicle fixed. They tell you to call back at such and such time and when you call they have not even touched your vehicle. They want you to keep calling back just to hear them say they've pretty much done nothing to your vehicle but noticed all of these things that are wrong with it. They also are pretty rude over the phone when you call them asking how your vehicle is. So you're going to be mad at me because you have done nothing to my vehicle in two days and I'm the one trying to find ways to and from work in the meantime when it all could've been done in a day like you first initially told me?? I'm not going to go into detail, but... drove to Lake Placid for a conference, knowing my brakes were 'a little' bad. A drive through the Adirondacks told me they were very bad. Found Central Garage online and discovered they were open until 11:00 pm. Dropped off the car after the evening session at about 10:30 pm. Car was fixed the next day, and at $42 under the 'I'll be happy if it costs this much' price that I said to my wife. Honest, hard working, and open during hours that are almost unimaginable for a garage. If I lived anywhere close, I would become a regular customer! read more

My experience with Central Garage was a little different than the previous reviewer. I went up to Lake Placid for a trip in October and on the way down from Whiteface Mountain (after some sightseeing), I completely lost my breaks. Needless to say, it was a very scary ride down the mountain. Luckily, the car finally rolled to a stop (and no, I didn't have an e-break either but that's an even longer story). My dad who works on cars was 6 hours away with no way to get to me, but he diagnosed the problem and said it would be okay to drive it to a garage very slowly. I made it down the road about 30 minutes to Central Garage and it was very late at night so they told me to call in the morning. Luckily I was staying in a hotel close by so we limped the car over there. In the morning, I called and spoke with a women who said they wouldn't be able to fit me in until 4 days later; however, that was not an option for me because I was due back to work 2 days later and I live 6 hours away in New Jersey. I then spoke to Jay who tried to figure something out for me and said that I should call later in the day. As suggested, I called him and he told me to drop the car off. He fixed the car the day after I made that call and I picked it up later that night. Total time from break failing to them fixing it was 2 days but I am VERY happy they could squeeze me in. I could tell that Jay had a lot of work to do and was putting in extra hours to make sure everybody got their car as soon as possible really. Turns out, my roaders completely fell apart and he even showed me the pieces (he said it's something he's never even seen before and it was possibly a manufacturer defect). After discovering what was wrong, it probably wasn't a good idea to be driving the car at all, so I'm lucky I made it to the garage safe and sound. In any case, I could have been charged an arm and a leg because I was really in a bind and really had no other option, but he was very reasonable. While I was there waiting for my car, a number of people were coming in to pick u-drop off their car and they knew everybody by name and it was really that "small-town" feel. We realized the front tire on our 2001 Volvo was both flat and not repairable on a Saturday night in January in the Adirondacks. Jay, the owner of Central Garage in Lake Placid said he could find a matching tire, and he came through the next day. Jay has a lot of heart, and really cares about helping people. We had a MUCH different experience than Travis T did. On Friday evening our daughter, who is a college student and had driven to Lake Placid for a weekend of hiking, got a flat tire. She called AAA and they sent Jay from Central Garage to help her. Within a few minutes Jay arrived, put her spare on for her, and told her that if she could drop the tire off the next morning around 8:00 a.m., he would try to fix it or replace it. At the end of the day after her hike she went back to the garage and Jay told her he was unable to repair the tire (no surprise to us...she probably shouldn't have driven on that tire all the way to the mountains). HOWEVER, he did have a good used tire and he put that one on her car. The total bill was only $43!! We are very grateful to Jay and Central Garage for the excellent customer service, and for not taking advantage of a stranded college student by trying to sell her new tires or gouging her on the service. Central Garage is the second Miracle of Lake Placid. Breaking down 300 miles from home on a Saturday evening at 7:00 is usually a sure way to be away from home until at least Monday. Well, not if you're lucky enough to limp your beater into the Strack family's Central Garage. Not only did I find Jay still minding the shop at that hour on a Saturday but, amazingly, he said he could get it on the lift in the morning. SUNDAY MORNING! Are you kidding me? No day of rest for these guys. The mechanic working on the car (I wish I had gotten his name; a Strack brother I'm guessing) said he may be able to get my truck sound enough to get home. 2 hours later I returned to the garage. How did it turn out? I am writing this review sitting on my own front porch on that same amazing Sunday the Strack family took care of a stranger from Buffalo. How much did the Stracks charge you may ask? I can't tell you because you wouldn't believe me. But I was prepared to pay at least three times what I did and still would have thought it a bargain. Had a flat tire from a nail while driving up to hike. We dropped off the tire, the employees patched it up and I picked up the tire when we finished hiking. They put the original back on for free and even sprayed down the spare so I wouldn't have to put it away dirty. Great guys and we're open late when I was up there. read more

Some time has passed since my experience here, and as the saying goes, "Time heals all wounds." However, my ordeal here definitely left a scar, and I would go as far out of my way to not use this garage ever again. In late February, me and a friend had traveled 6 hours up to Lake Placid to go snowboarding. Unfortunately the morning we were going to head up my car failed to start, stranding us at the local Best Western. Luckily there is a free shuttle that runs from that we were able to take and get some good turns in. When the car had failed despite trying o jump the battery, I called AAA. They in turn were supposed to send someone over from Central with a tow truck to have the car looked at. About an hour later the driver showed up not in a tow truck, but a Chevy Astro. I told him that we actually needed a tow truck as it was not the battery. and he said he would return in about an hour with it to pick it up. I also told him we were there to go to Whiteface, and he said that if I left the keys in the car he would take care of it while we were at the mountain. With that in mind we gathered our boards and caught the shuttle. After about an hour or two of riding I called into their garage to check on the status of the car, but was told that the truck was still out. Another hour later I called, and was told they had picked up the car and it was sitting in the garage, but the mechanic was out for lunch. A few more calls were placed in afterwards where Central claimed they were starting to work on the car. This was good news as we had to drive back that night and we're hoping to leave before it got too late. Around 3 we decided to call it a day, and caught the shuttle back into town, deciding to stop back in at the hotel lobby to figure out to stow our snowboards away, and figure out how to get to where the car was. And that's when I saw the car was still sitting exactly where it had been when we left it, hadn't moved an inch. Furious, I called the shop and they said the tow truck would be over in half an hour. Nearly three hours later, and multiple calls to AAA where the driver from Central falsely claimed to have stopped into the hotel lobby where we had been sitting the whole time, that same Chevy Astro, this time with a second passenger, showed up instead of a tow truck. I went out to meet with the driver again, as I now had the keys again and was curious where the tow truck was. Instead of explaining he grabbed the keys, got into my car, popped it into neutral and rolled it down onto Main Street and down the street where it turns out there garage was. For the record we were not aware that they were quite literally down the block, or we probably could've managed to do the same thing ourselves. On top of this the passenger in the Astro got into the driver's seat of the truck and drove down there without offering a ride in single digit temperatures. It wasn't a long walk, but still... After walking down to the shop, they said they would get to it soon, so we went out for a bite to eat, and ended up back at the Best Western hotel lobby. After 3 hours with no call back, and another snowstorm brewing we were seriously having to consider staying another night in Placid, but decided to walk down to the shop to check in on the car again. Once we arrived I saw the car running, which was a bit of a relief, in the parking lot. I doubt they were in any rush to call back that the car was fixed, and it took another 20 minutes before we were able to settle the bill. The mechanic claimed that the car had needed spark plugs, and the new ones worked for a bit although it turned out the car needed a new fuel pump when I got back home and had it checked out with my regular mechanic. Overall, I came away from this highly disappointed that Central Garage is in any way affiliated with an organization as reputable as AAA. It could have been an isolated incident, but in my experience with them they were disrespectful, dishonest, and very uncommunicative. In the end they were our only option, as we had explored numerous other paths to getting the car fixed after the first of our problems, but they were also the worst option. If it can be avoided, don't trust your car to this poorly run establishment. read more
